So last night I was telling Shiva bhagvans story to my daughter. She is 13. I said Shiva is a unasakt yogi. So my daughter asked "wait doesn't that means one who is unattached to the material world ? And if that's the case how can Shiva be unattached when he was married?" I said well unattached means he understand that everything is temperory and so he doesn't drown himself in anything material, meaning if he ever loose everything he won't drown in sorrow. He will be unfazed by change. So she said, but that means he doesn't really love anyone. Then how can you say his love for his wife was real? If he is unattached? And how can you say he loves us truly?
By this I got confused. I had no idea how to answer her without further confusing her or myself.
So my dear friends, I ask you all to please help me. Can you explain how God wether is Shrkrishna or Shiva, remain unattached while they still love their creation? I don't doubt their love, but I need to explain my kid the actual meaning of unattached or nirmohi or unasakt.

Thanks

There is a difference between Moh and Prem. Moh is supposed to be a bandhan while love is supposed to librate you. If you truly love someone that love is supposed to liberate you, love is eternal so the physical presence of beloved doesn't really matter. Plus it is believed you love the soul of the person not the body and soul never dies. God knew this, the soul of their beloved still exists even if their body doesn't. So they never really got attached to the body in which their beloved reside.
Body is temporary soul is not.

It is normal human nature to try to hold on to things which we know will eventully not last but the moment we are assured that something dear to us is permanent we will stop trying to fight to keep it. God knows the souls of his beloved are permanent, it may change form but it will be always there. Moh usske prati jayada hota hai jiske saidav rehne per prashana chinn ho. Since for us human beings nothing is permanent we are bound to be in trap of attachments.

Lord Shiva is Maha yogi. Being detached also means seeing everything in a Sakshi bhav (being a witness).
Param Shiva is Param Brhman.
Even a Human can experience the state of Aham Brhmasmi. When a self realised soul experiences this state, all the actions, performed by that body doesnt yield any Karma. Such person can live a sansarik life, fulfill all his/ her responsibalities, without creating any bondage of Moha. Maya.
If a Yogi can lead such a life then the Maha Yogi like Lord Shiva, Krishna's being Anasakta is well understood. They perform all their duties & yet remain detached.
They perform their part in the Creation by remaining in the higher plane or higher state of mind. This can be called a Nirmohi or Anasakta stage.

In simple words, unattachment , it's called detachment in Vedanta means not expecting anything in return for loving others, not demanding anything, not expecting anything from others. It's full of higher level of love. It's so difficult for us, which we all should aim for that path at least.
When we expect from spouse/kids it becomes attachment or bondage.

Being detached but loving others and doing your duty selflessly is all about karma yoga given in Geetha chapter 3.

My two cents on this.

For humans what we know as love is nothing but affection.

God 'is' love. Just like the sun. It does not do anything to give light. Similarly God himself is love which takes the entire universe in its embrace.
