Thanks for this explaination. My daughter always asks me, if rakshasas were bad, then how come Vibishan, mandodari and Kumbhakaran were good? I remember reading that Kumbhakaran also advised Ravan that he was wrong in taking away someone else's wife. This is what I always told her, being a rakshas does not mean you have to be bad. Good and bad is in everyone, be it manav, dev or rakshas. It's up to us in what qualities we decide to nurture and that decides what we eventually become, no matter what race we are born in.
