Inspired By Neerja, This Dehradun Girl Saved The Lives Of 4 People

When an ordinary person does something extraordinary, it is truly exemplary. Bravery is an attribute that lies within each one of us but it takes determination to stand and fight when needed.

Mitali Shah, a girl from Dehradun, Uttrakhand, and an employee of UCO bank, is an example of courage. Her courage not only saved the lives of her co-workers but also stopped the bank from getting robbed.

The incident took place on 20th Feb, Saturday. Since it was a weekend, there were very few people in the bank and only three female employees, Mitali being one of them.

The robber entered the bank in a helmet and investigated first. On realising that there were only three girls he took out his revolver and pointed it at Mitali's forehead. She was handling the cash counter. He then warned the other two girls to not play smart. Everyone was in shock including the two employees and two other customers.

"I was shocked as he pointed the gun and asked me to put the cash in the bag. I started collecting the cash and told him to put the gun down" says Mitali.

Mitali was a bit afraid at first, which anybody at gunpoint would be. But when the attacker shouted again, she summoned up all her courage and told him, "I won't give the cash, shoot if you can".

When Mitali said this to the attacker, the other two girls also gained courage and one of them, named Majulika, pressed the siren. As soon the siren rang, the robber ran in panic, and police and bank officials were informed.

The police are still investigating the issue. The courage of all the 3 girls helped the bank and it was appreciated by the management.

Mitali along with the two other employees will be awarded the Tilu Rauteli Award by the State Government. Tilu Rauteli was one of the heroic women of Uttarakhand.

Mitali says, "I don't know from where the courage came but there was only one thing in my mind - either I would lose my life or everybody will be saved".

On being asked what inspired her, she replied "Neerja".
