While Bollywood awaits Sanjay Dutt's return...

Renuka Vyavahare & Sonil Dedhia | TNN | Feb 25, 2016, 12.00 AM ISTSanjay DuttSanjay DuttSanjay Dutt's friends and well-wishers from Bollywood are waiting for Baba to come back to what he loves doing the most - facing the camera. His last big hit was Rajkumar Hirani's PK, which released when he was in prison. Even while behind bars, Dutt kept in touch with his friends by writing letters. One such note was penned to Ajay Devgn to wish him during the release of Singham Returns (August 2014), where he mentioned that he had lost 11 kilos with his strict exercise regimen.

Apparently, while in jail, Dutt would make daily radio announcements and play songs requested by his inmates. On his last day, he played songs from his parents' (Nargis and Sunil Dutt) movies. He also thanked the jail staff and broke down while telling them that he wouldn't have survived this term without their support. The actor, who has raked in big moolah at the box-office over the years, earned '38,000 making paper bags, over a five-year prison term. Apparently, the one thing he did in jail every day was read The Times of India, probably longing for the day he would read news of his freedom in the headlines. Dutt's friends from the industry react to his release from jail, for one last time.

Suniel Shetty: Nargisji and DuttSaab will be at peace

This is the best phase of Sanju's life. He is a free man. If there is anybody after Amitji (Amitabh Bachchan) with an aura of a star around him, it's Baba (Sanjay Dutt). There is only one Munnabhai. After all that his family " Anju (Namrata), Priya, Maanayata and the kids " has been through, today is their Diwali, Eid, Christmas everything. Nargisji and Duttsaab will be at peace now. You'll see a calm and composed Sanju. He will be a changed man. If it wasn't for his family and his sisters in particular, I doubt if he would have been able to endure this tough time. They have stood by him and battled for him right through these 23 years. Only your family can help you come out of a phase like this. The best return gift that anyone can give Sanju would be a good movie. Ranbir Kapoor playing him in his biopic is ideal because Ranbir does look like Baba from his Rocky days.

Sanjay Dutt to walk out of prison with Rs 450 as salary

Jackie Shroff:He is a fighter

He is my bhidu and I am elated that he is going to be free from all the worries. We've known each other even before we entered Bollywood. He has gone through a lot of pain in his personal life. He is a fighter and he will come out stronger. I'm happy for his kids. I am looking forward to meeting him and sharing a few laughs, just like our good old times.

Bunty Walia:His passion is movies and I am sure he will be back to work within weeks

Sanju is like my elder brother and I am really happy that he is a free man now. After more than two decades of ordeal, he is going to be out of jail without any sword hanging over his head. Movies are his passion and I am sure he will be back to work within weeks. I also have a story in my mind that I will discuss with him once hesettles down.

Mahesh Bhatt:The man has risen from the ashes like a phoenix

Every time people have written Sanjay Dutt's obituary, the man has risen from the ashes like a phoenix. This time too, he will come out stronger without any baggage. I wish him and his family all the best. I am sure all the time he has spent in jail has made him wiser and I can assure you that this is going to be the best phase of his life. I know him for more than 30 years and his fighting spirit comes from his parents, Sunil Duttji and Nargisji. There will only be one Sanjay Dutt.

Sanjay Dutt Walks Out Of Pune's Yerwada Jail With A Salute

Pune: Actor Sanjay Dutt, imprisoned in an arms case related to the 1993 Mumbai blasts, was released from Pune's Yerwada Jail this morning. He kissed the ground, saluted the prison and then hefted a large bag on his shoulder to walk away to freedom.
Here are the latest developments:
  1. "There is no easy walk to freedom, my friends," the 56-year-old actor, accompanied by wife Maanayata Dutt, said as he tried to make his way through hordes of media personnel at the Pune airport.
  2. The actor, dressed in a dark blue shirt and jeans, walked out of the jail premises around 8:45 am amid tight security and was driven away in a white SUV to the airport.
  3. After reaching Mumbai, Mr Dutt headed straight to the famous Siddhivinayak temple to offer prayers. He then went to his mother Nargis Dutt's grave in Marine Lines.
  4. Posters welcoming him have been put up outside the Pali Home home of the actor, the star of films like Khalnayak and the blockbuster Munnabhai series.
  5. Sanjay Dutt, who spent 42 months in Yerawada jail, was released a little over three months ahead of time - the reprieve was granted on grounds of good behaviour.
  6. On Monday, the Bombay High Court will hear a petition challenging Mr Dutt's early release. It also alleges that the actor got preferential treatment while he was in jail.
  7. The actor's frequent breaks from jail had earlier been criticised as evidence of VIP treatment. Between May 2013 and 2014, Mr Dutt spent over 118 days out of prison.
  8. In 2007, Sanjay Dutt was found guilty of illegal possession of an AK-56 rifle and a pistol acquired from those involved in the 1993 serial blasts in Mumbai that killed 257 people and injured hundreds. The actor served 18 months but then was out on bail, fighting the conviction until a court in March 2013 ordered him back to jail in Pune.
  9. Mr Dutt, who was cleared of conspiracy charges in connection with the blasts, had claimed that he had acquired the weapons to protect himself and his family during the riots that erupted after the blasts.
  10. Last year, a petition for his pardon, filed by former Supreme Court judge Markandey Katju, was turned down. Sources said Maharashtra Governor C Vidyasagar Rao had rejected it on the recommendation of the state home department, which said it would set a bad precedent as the actor's conviction was confirmed by the Supreme Court.

How Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt spent his time in jail

By Puja Changoiwala Mumbai

When actor Sanjay Dutt left a prison in the western Indian city of Pune on Thursday, he walked away with some experience of making paper bags and being a radio disc jockey.

Dutt was sentenced for firearms offences linked to the 1993 Mumbai blasts which killed 257 people and injured 713.

He was convicted of buying firearms from the bombers but said the weapons were necessary in order to defend his family during the Hindu-Muslim rioting of 1993.

The actor was moved to the Yerwada jail in May 2013 to finish his five-year jail term.

But owing to his good behaviour and positive activities like running a radio programme, he was recently granted a remission of 144 days.

Intense interest

His early release, however, has sparked outrage with critics saying that Dutt had already been granted an unreasonable number of parole and furlough leaves owing to his celebrity status.

Meanwhile, there is intense interest in the media about his life inside the jail.

Dutt lived in a 8x10ft (2.4m x 3m) cell and wore the white uniform of prisoners. He had a 100 sq ft garden in front of his cell, where he was allowed to stroll under the watchful eyes of four guards.

According to a former fellow inmate, the actor had been resigned to his fate of the unavoidable jail time, but knew he could be released early if he behaved well.

Image copyright AFP Image caption The actor's wife Manyata and his children eagerly awaited his release Image copyright AFP Image caption Sanjay Dutt campaigned for the Samajwadi party in the 2009 general elections

He was lodged in a high-security cell next to the "faansi" ward, which houses prisoners on death row, and was generally not allowed to interact with other prisoners owing to security concerns.

If he walked to the common area, he would be accompanied by four policemen. If he interacted with other prisoners, the conversations would be listened into.

"I would speak to him often as I was working as the librarian at the prison," said the former inmate.

"Baba, as he is affectionately known, would borrow at least two books every week. He used to read extensively, mainly Hindi literature from Munshi Premchand."

Spiritual reading

The former inmate added that the actor would "remain immersed in newspapers".

"He had little else to do. In the common area, we had one TV set for every 150 prisoners. But since Baba's cell was a high-security one, he did not have that luxury," he added.

Hitesh Jain, Dutt's lawyer, said that the actor also developed a "spiritual inclination" during his time in the prison.

"He was doing a lot of spiritual reading. These are the things which keep a person encouraged, and provide strength to pass the whole term," said Jain.

Speaking about his daily schedule, officers at the Yerwada prison said that Dutt would wake up at six in the morning. He would take a shower after which he would be served tea and breakfast.

The jail staff would then bring him material to make bags from newspapers. He would spend most of his mornings working, earning 45 rupees (47p; 66 cents) for 100 bags. A little before noon, he would be taken to the radio studio where he would present a programme on 'Radio YCP' (Yerwada Central Prison), the jail's internal radio station.

Soon after, policemen would escort him to the common area where he was allowed to interact with other prisoners and exercise with them.

He would then return to his cell at around 14:00, have lunch and remain there for an hour before again hosting his programme on the radio station.

Dinner would be served by 17:30 and the actor would stay locked in his cell from 18:00 until the next morning.

'One of us'

His radio programme was popular among the inmates.

"He would write his own scripts, and would usually speak about reforms during his radio sessions," a jail officer said.

"He would speak about prison life, how the prisoners could survive it, and how their rehabilitative processes should be once they leave prison."

The officer added that the actor would often repeat his dialogues from popular Munnabhai films and play songs to entertain his listeners.

The actor definitely made some fans with his radio skills.

"Baba might be a big deal outside those prison walls, but inside, he was one of us. He even met my wife and mother during one of their prison visits," the former fellow inmate said.

"My family was elated on meeting him, but to me, and to all of us prisoners, he was ordinary. Prison does that to you. The barracks snatch your worth and render you ordinary, irritatingly ordinary, even if you are a superstar."

Sanjay Dutt Will Focus on His Career After Release, Says Subhash Ghai

Press Trust of India | February 25, 2016 13:20 IST (Mumbai)
inShare
Sanjay Dutt

Sanjay Dutt photographed in Mumbai on February 25.

"He wants to focus on his career as an actor, nothing else. That's what he told me two months back. He will come out this time with much more maturity and sense of responsibility as a human being and also as a bigger star onscreen than ever," said Subhash Ghai

As actor Sanjay Dutt was released from Pune's Yerawada prison on February 25, where he served his sentence for 42 months in connection to the 1993 serial bomb blasts case, his co-stars and friends from Bollywood have wished him a peaceful life and a great career ahead. Filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt said the 56-year-old actor would emerge stronger. "People have always written his obituary but he has bounced back. He has dazzled everyone with his work. This time too I am hopeful he will come out as a more stronger man," Mr Bhatt told PTI.

"I think now on, this will be the best years of his life with new beginnings," he said. Mr Bhatt recalled how he and Dutt began their respective careers together and delivered several hits. The duo worked together on films like Naam, Gumrah, Sadak and others.

"I don't look at him as an actor and even he doesn't look at me as a director. While making Naam, we came close emotionally," he added.

The Saaransh director wished Mr Dutt and his family all the best.

"His wife Manyata wanted me to be at his home today. I think this is a personal moment for him and I don't want to invade on this time. I would surely meet him soon," he said.

Bollywood's Munnabhai has given memorable performances in many of Subhash Ghai's films, the most memorable being Khalnayak.

"If I know Sanjay Dutt since Vidhata and Khalnayak, he will come out this time with much more maturity and sense of responsibility as a human being and also as a bigger star onscreen than ever," Mr Ghai said.

"He wants to focus on his career as an actor, nothing else. That's what he told me two months back," he added.

Before going to prison in 2013 to serve the remainder of his five-year term, Mr Dutt was working on director Rensil D'Silva's Ungli.

"(Now) He needs rest; he needs to relax first, spend time with his family and near and dear ones. He is a great friend. I am happy he is back. And I wish him a peaceful life," Rensil said.

"He was going through a lot emotionally while we worked on the film but still he completed the project," Rensil added.

Actress Gracy Singh, who shared screen space with Mr Dutt in Rajkumar Hirani's Munnabhai MBBS, is elated for the actor.

"I am happy for him. I wish him immense happiness and success," she said.

Both Rensil and Gracy would love to team with up with the Khalnayak star again.

"I would love to work with him again. But as of now there is no such story idea or script that I have for him," Rensil said.

Gracy said, "I am an admirer of his work. I would love to work with him again. It would be great working with him in the third part of Munnabhai if I am offered (the project)."

Actress Juhi Chawla welcomed her Son of Sardaar co-star on Twitter:

Mr Dutt was arrested on April 19, 1993 and subsequently convicted for possessing a prohibited weapon AK-56 rifle under the Arms Act, in the Mumbai serial bomb blasts case. (Also Read: Sanjay Dutt Leaves Jail, Rishi Kapoor Welcomes Him Back in Tweet)

Originally sentenced to six years rigorous imprisonment (RI) by TADA court, Mr Dutt got some relief from the Supreme Court which while upholding the TADA conviction that reduced his sentence to five years in February 2013.

The actor was released on Thursday after undergoing remaining 42 months of his sentence as he had already served 18 months in prison as an under trial at Mumbai's Arthur road jail.

Meanwhile, the entrance of Mr Dutt's house in suburban Bandra was decorated with garlands to welcome him back.

Also, a photo of his late actor-politician father Sunil Dutt was put up at the gate of his building Imperial Heights along with a message that read: "Dutt Sahab Amar Rahe".

Fans too were seen eagerly awaiting for Mr Dutt's return.

Hoardings like "Welcome Back Sanju Baba", "Bandraites Welcome Back Bandra Boy Sanjay Dutt" with a picture of young Dutt with his mother were put up in the area.

Many such hoardings are put up in Munnabhai's lane.

The actor has reached Mumbai and was welcomed by his wife Maanyata.

Mr Dutt also paid a visit to the Siddhivinayak Temple at Prabhadevi in South Mumbai to offer prayers and then is expected to head his mother's (Nargis) grave at Marine Lines to pay respects before proceeding home in Bandra, where he is scheduled to hold a press conference later in the day.(See Pics: Sanjay Dutt Prays at Siddhivinayak Temple)

he is not going into politic, he is not made for it. he will focus on his career and that's what he should do.

he is a great actor but he has done a lot of shitty films which destroyed his credibility.

I'd like him to do small budget content driven films so the films are hit and also good.
