Chapter 58
Three weeks later
Swara flounced on to the terrace in a huff. A minute later Sanskaar came out as well in great strides.
"That is not fair, Swara!" he said, holding her arm, "You have to pay up!"
"Not fair?!" she demanded, "You are the cheater!"
"What rubbish!" he said. "We agreed on five and you're welshing on the agreement!"
"No! Because you just go on and on - you take something like six or seven and call it one!" she turned her back on him with a pout.
"How sweet!" said a voice behind them.
Swara and Sanskaar turned, startled. They hadn't even checked to see if there was anyone else here.
"Dekho, Ragini, it's Shona and Shona! Squabbling over some little love game... how adorable!" drawled Lakshya.
Swara and Sanskaar both blushed - they had indeed been quarreling over the terms of a bet Swara had lost. But their embarassment only lasted till they noticed exactly how Lakshya and Ragini were positioned. Ragini was sitting on the swinging three-seater, and Lakshya was lying across it, his head resting in his wife's lap and his feet dangling over the sides of the arm-rest.
Sanskaar and Swara shared a half-grin.
"Ow, why're you prodding me, Ragini?" complained Lakshya.
"Uthiye, Laksh!" she said, poking him again. She was pink-faced herself, shy at being found canoodling on the terrace.
"Nahin!" he said, obstinately."We were here first and if it's only these two, they don't count as 'Public' under the Public Display of Affection Act."
"Uff!" she said, despairing and throwing a glance at the other two, pleading for understanding.
"Rehne do, Ragini," said Sanskaar, sitting down on one of the other chairs, "Yeh toh paidaishi besharam hai."
Laughing, Swara plonked down in another deep cushioned cane chair.
"Alright, alright, fine!" Lakshya hauled himself upright. "So what's up, Shona?"
"Agar toone abhi Swara ko Shona kaha hai, toh tera muh tod doonga!" said Sanskaar menacingly, "Aur agar mujhe Shona kaha hai toh muh, haath, pair sab tod doonga!"
Both sisters burst into giggles at that.
"Oooh!" said Lakshya, going slightly effeminate for dramatic effect, "these brutish caveman tactics are so hot... Shona!"
The girls laughed harder still and Sanskaar couldn't hold back a grin either.
"Waise achcha hua tum donon mil gaye," Sanskaar said. "Swara aur mai tum donon se kuch poochna chah rahe the."
"Kya?" asked Ragini.
"We've had this travel plan for a long time... we wanted to take a trip along the Ganga. Start at Gangotri or even Gaumukh... and then follow the river back to Kolkata... you know... touching Rishikesh, Hardwar, Prayag, Banaras... a nice journey that's cultural, spiritual, scenic, adventurous... Now seems like a good time to go..."
"Okay..." said Ragini intrigued.
Lakshya remembered that he'd secretly overheard them once, discussing this trip...
"Aap donon hamare saath chalenge?" Sanskaar asked.
Ragini and Lakshya looked at each other. Then, Ragini turned to look at Swara, who was waiting serenely.
Ragini was incredibly moved at the invitation. "Are you sure, Swara?" she asked.
"Yes," said Swara simply and emphatically.
Ragini turned to Lakshya again. The silent communication channels thrummed between them. Then Lakshya looked over at the other two and said with a little formal nod of the head, "Thank you, we'd love to go with you!"
