Om Shanti Om & Saawariya promise a 'spark'ling Diwali |

Televisionpoint.com Correspondent | Mumbai Switch on the television, pick up a newspaper, tune in to a radio station, and voila you are greeted by the promos, interviews and the songs of Om Shanti Om (OSO) and Saawariya, the two movies which seems to have the potential to make this Diwali a 'spark'ling one. The promos of the two movies have started a 'fashionable' debate of sorts. A debate which have sent the young and the trendy girls of GenY in a tizzy. Should they sport the Deepika Padukone look — that 70s look or should they go for the Sonam Kapoor look — which is classic and opulent. The men, of course, are already vying for that much-talked-about six-pack abs and no, they too, wouldn't mind sporting the retro look as popularised by SRK. The printed shirts with large collars and cuffs, the bell-bottom trousers, the safari suits, the long side burns, the past life venture of SRK and Deepika clearly promises to be a lesson in retro fashion. Ranbir Kapoor, too, is not far behind. From whatever, you can make out from the promos, you can bet that hats, bowler and others, the simple black suit and tie with a crisp white shirt, might just become the 'in' thing. Who knows you might just spot men who prefer to pull up the sleeves of their jackets on one arm to show off their shirt sleeve. Of course, that's just the tip of the iceberg. Truly, movies are not just about watching a story come alive, it's also about setting a trend. Earlier, people lacked disposable incomes to go for a wardrobe makeover, nor did they have retail chains who would bank on the emerging trends and have a line dedicated to the movies. But times have changed and today's youngsters have understood the importance of being earnestly fashionable. And as the verdict goes, they and their wardrobes are eagerly awaiting for the release both Saawariya and OSO. "I would love to emulate Sonam's look in Saawariya. The straight pants with a long flair kurta, the long sleeves with zardozi work, such an outfit would make for an ideal wedding wear during the winter months," informs Ruhi Dutta, a BBA student. "I would love to sport those white-rimmed glasses that Deepika is wearing in OSO and not to forget that ethnic blue salwar with matching blue earrings. The best thing about these clothes is that they are old-fashioned, yet they are in-fashion. As far as Saawariya goes, there's a classic feel to the whole thing. The cuts and the fabrics are wonderful," adds model Jessica Gomes. OSO and Saawariya have surely generated plenty of interest amongst the men too. "The bell-bottom pants were back in circulation a while ago and I am sure that with SRK sporting them in OSO, they will make a comeback. Of course, I would personally love to sport those wide-collared shirts. They have an old-world charm to them," adds model Anando Ghosh. The fashion faternity, too, feels that these movies are armed with fashionable ammunition to create ripples. "I will not be surprised if the OSO and Saawariya look becomes a rage this winter. While Saawariya has a vintage feel about it, OSO, of course, is recreating the fashion of the 1960s and 1970s. The tight churidar and short kurtas have a period feel yet they can be adapted so very easily. Since curves are in, one can flaunt the same in these outfits, really well," adds fashion designer Agnimitra Paul. Designer Shantanu Goenka feels that the fashion conscious people are going to relate more to Saawariya than OSO. "The salwar-kurtas and jackets in Saawariya are classic yet so chic and you can wear them for any occasion." Clearly, 'sparks' and fashionable ones at that are going to fly next Friday and while the young ones can't wait to emulate the clothes, fashion designer Kiran Uttam Ghosh advices the wait and watch policy. "See, there is always the danger of going over-the-top. One cannot really make out everything from the promos, one has to watch the movie in its totality to see if things are falling into place. It's true that both the films have generated plenty of interest." Well, whatever the verdict be, there's no denying the fact that both OSO and Saawariya have given the term 'have designs on you', a whole new meaning. Meanwhile, the advance bookings for the film are open only at Inox multiplexes across the country from November 4, 2007. This will give cine buffs the opportunity to book their OSO tickets only at INOX multiplexes, much before the rest of the country does. "Queries for bookings have already started pouring in, and there is a lot of curiosity and excitement for the movie. Om Shanti Om is one of the biggest releases this year and we are expecting some fireworks to fly at the box-office this Diwali", said Saurabh Verma, Vice-president, programming and distribution, Inox. |
