There have been many debates over the issue of 'the younger the better'. Gone are the 'Bobby' days when filmmakers cast actresses only because they are young and look nave! An actress in her 30's may score over the actress in her early 20's when it comes to looking hot too! After all isn't Mallika Sherawat (who happens to be in her mid 30's) far sexier than 20 somethings like Nisha Kothari or even Hansika Motwani? Mallika made a passive entry in Bollywood by playing a very thanda role in Jeena Sirf Mere Liye , where she went completely unnoticed, all thanks to Kareena playing the lead and hogging all the limelight. Mallika was in her early 30s then. But the woman didn't accept defeat easily and took Bollywood by storm with her 17 kisses in Khwahish . Soon Mallika Sherawat turned into this 'sex icon' overnight and to add to her image came Murder . The film went on to become a commercial hit and Mallika Sherawat soon became a brand, who was the most sought after bombshell for even filmmakers like Mani Ratnam who realized her mass appeal (rather sex appeal) and the difference her presence made to their films. Probably one of the very few actresses who started off her career in her 30s, Mallika Sherawat who was also apparently married once, has shown that age has nothing to do with getting noticed.
Another lady to have followed suit is the gorgeous Vidya Balan. After a brief career in TV (Vidya was seen in Hum Paanch ), she began her career in films with Pradeep Sarkar's Parineeta . Vidya was in her late 20s, the time when most of the actresses start doing 'selected' roles and films, Vidya began her film career! But the actor proved that it is 'acting' and only acting that can take you places... her gorgeous face had the charm that reminded us of our yesteryear actresses and in no time Vidya became a welcome change in an industry which had truckloads of skimpily clad actresses who knew nothing about acting... Vidya's Lage Raho Munnabhai, Guru, Eklavya fared well and she proved that 'careful selection of roles' is all you need to do if you enter the industry at an age where you can no longer play 'college going' kids who run around trees!
It's not just the actresses who have created their foothold in the industry in spite of making a late entry. What could be a better example than singer-music director-actor Himesh Reshammiya who entered films in his mid 30s! The singer with his infamous nasal twang debuted in Aap Kaa Surroor , a film released in 2007 with an actress who was half his age! Himesh (in his mid 30s) even debuted opposite the 16 year old Hansika Motwani! No, we wouldn't say that Himesh did a great job but we'd definitely say that Himesh got himself noticed... all thanks to a massive promotion strategy, tremendous mass appeal and hit music... If rumours are to be believed, Himesh even has a balding patch on his head which he tries to cover by wearing his trademark caps! But who cares, Himesh is popular and his fans are even eagerly waiting for his Aap Kaa Surroor sequel to be announced!
