The OSO director reveals what she loves and hates about SRK; and the one habit she never wants him to change

I don't know where to begin… it's been 15 years and all these years you have been a wonderful friend…
I remember my first meeting with you when you were shooting for Kundan Shah's Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa in Goa. I had read your interviews and found them to be shockingly arrogant. I assumed you were going to be as arrogant as your interviews but I was pleasantly surprised. You were practising playing a trumpet and it took us three minutes to become friends. We cracked a joke and it was as if we were childhood friends.
You had just got married to Gauri and she was present too. Deepak Tijori, Aditya Lakhia, Gauri, you and me would all go out and party at night in a gang. I always found you to be very down-to-earth, hard working and friendly — not arrogant at all.
Learning class
I remember for the Goa shoot of KHKN. There was no money for assistants or dancers, we had to hire local Goans and I would find it tiring to make them rehearse. You became my assistant and would teach them by making them stand in a line and rehearse or even pinch their bottoms to make them get up on cue from the ground.
There are so many special memories I have of you as a friend but one lingers in my memory the most… it was in 1996. I was going through a personal crisis. I called you and started crying. You were shooting but one hour later, the doorbell on my Juhu flat rang and there you were! For three hours, you sat in my kitchen talking to me and calming me down… whenever you speak to me, it calms me down.
Anybody who has worked with you once wouldn't want to work with anyone else. You give your 200 per cent for every film, never say no to retakes, give invaluable inputs, never go home till the shooting is over and always come prepared on the sets. Most important, Shah Rukh is your willingness to do anything.
Super deeds
In OSO, I have made you play a superhero too — Mohabbatman — The King Of Romance! You have worn a latex outfit and red underwear with 500 visitors on the sets and looked at ease. Inside I am sure you were dying of embarrassment but not once did you complain. There was another scene where I made you shoot with a stuffed tiger. We are both mad so we both improvise a lot together. You asked me while fighting the stuffed tiger if you could say 'naughty pussy!' and I burst out laughing. It's there in the film.
Yes, but there's a habit of yours I want to change. Please pick up my phone when I call you. I always feel you are giving everyone else more attention than me but yes there's one habit of yours I NEVER want to change. You have this habit of constantly calling me Suhana and Suhana Farah. Please don't stop doing that ever.
You encouraged me to become a director from a choreographer. Main Hoon Naa took time to start but when it did, you gave it your all. You have this horrible habit of wearing a deadpan expression whenever you are hearing a script narration. I never know if you love or hate the script. For OSO, I knew you were hooked.
I was touched when you sent me such a beautiful message after watching OSO. It's personal so I won't say what it is but I cried that day… I have saved so many messages of yours.
Big hearts
The most precious gift you have given me is your presence. I know you will always be there for me. We are both Khans and somewhere we both come from similar backgrounds — liberal Muslims, very generous and large-hearted fathers who became almost bankrupt so we have always learnt to give to people. You are the most generous person I have known.
You have been with me through my most trying times. You have seen me depressed on the sets of OSO every time I would go to Jaslok Hospital for my pregnancy tests and come away with negative results. When I got to hear the good news finally, I went to tell you at your home. You had just come back from London. You took one look at me and before I could utter a word, you said 'You are pregnant, no?' and thus spoilt the surprise! You you give me two baby names every day which I find so sweet.
I don't know what gift to give you today but I would like you to give me your love and friendship for life. I hope to give you the first copy of OSO as your birthday gift.
