Why should we worry about Oscars, asks Sanjay Leela Bhansali

IANS | Jan 3, 2016, 05.50 PM ISTSanjay Leela BhansaliSanjay Leela Bhansali
Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, whose film 'Devdas' was India's entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars in 2003, believes that the Indian film industry shouldn't worry too much about the coveted US award.

"Why should we be so worried about the Oscars and why do we want an acknowledgment from foreign (film industry)? Why is that? Do they ever say that they need a National Award," Bhansali asked.

Bhansali, who is enjoying the success of his latest film 'Bajirao Mastani', said he has "no idea" about his next project.
"I have no idea and that's the fun of it. I want to go into the New Year discovering new ideas. At the moment I am enjoying the success of 'Bajirao Mastani'," the celebrated filmmaker-director said.

We should
Oscars are highest rated award for film fraternity right now
If you make it up to oscar , it proves that you can compete with world best and get your film to watch by a larger number of cinephiles
Otherwise for bollywood be known as dancing and singing stereotype

An Academy Award is definitely going to be a feather in the cap of any filmmaker, but shouldn't really be considered as a benchmark of success, IMHO. Over the years, we've seen many great films, some of which haven't even been recognized by the Academy in the form of the 'coveted' nomination. That doesn't make watching the film a less engaging experience, does it?

Anyway, the Academy seems to have some of it's credibility in the past few years. As a case in point, have a look at Leonardo DiCaprio. The man's been practically ignored for ages, yet is touted as one of the best actors.

While i do get why so much importance is attached to the Oscars and i admit its a huge feather in anyone's cap, not having one doesn't take anything away from anyone's talent..I remember reading this article where the author mentioned that he hopes Leo never gets an Oscar cos in his quest to win one, he has made some of the most remarkable movies in the past decade so he is scared Leo will stop trying if and when he gets an Oscar 😆 And ARR won two Oscars for Slumdog when in reality the soundtrack of that film is not half as good as some of the stuff ARR has composed in the 90s and early 2000s..

Oscars aren't like the fairest or something. They end up awarding the undeserving ones so many times. Oscar winners is more about campaigning and very less about actual content today. It is not reliable anymore.

I do agree with him somewhere. All these pseudo-critics of social media start whining when an Indian film doesn't make it to the top 5, I ask why do you need their approval? Slumdog was so not the best film made about India, there are 100s of better films.

But wo competiton aur campaigning pe depand karta hai
Also oscar is fair or not that's not point
But oscar have prestige , if you win oscar all your future films would be promoted using the tag by 'academy award winner'😆
