Chapter 21
"Are you trying to make me apologise for kissing you?" he said, with a glimmer of a smile.
"Yes!" she stormed back.
He shook his head emphatically. "No way."
"Kameena!" she scolded.
He grinned back.
Swara let out a huff and dropped her hands in a despairing gesture. "Sanskaar, you told me that you would not assert your rights as a husband, that you would never pressure me, didn't you?"
He became serious at once. "It's not that I'm reneging on that, Swara! I made that statement in all sincerity - and the reason I did it was to help and support you. You needed my help, you married me so that you could bring Ragini's truth out in the open. I didn't want to do anything that would make your situation more difficult. My only intention was to smooth your way!"
He looked at her earnestly. "But now we have moved past that, Swara, the situation is very different. We are married to each other by all proper rites, you are in this house as a Maheshwari bahu, and everyone believes that we are giving this marriage a serious chance. And more than anything else, I love you and you... like me... can't we make this a real marriage?"
"But... Sanskaar - I don't know..." she looked very perturbed. "After I managed to tell everyone about Ragini, I came here again because my mother urged me to stay here for a few months. But the way we got married, the way we were forced to come together... I used you! My plan was to go back to my life... get out of your life and let you go on with yours!"
There was distress in her voice. "I know I'm being unfair to you by staying here... and if I continue with this marriage... will I be even more unfair to you? You are Sanskaar Maheshwari - any of the big families in our community would be happy to have you as their son in law... and I'm... I'm illegitimate... you know that! Your mother, your family would have never agreed to this marriage in the normal way. I'm confused, Sanskaar...!" she pleaded.
He shook his head. "My parents are not an issue, Swara. We are married, and they've come to terms with that. Your being illegitimate - that's just bullshit. As for me... you know I love you! What I want is simple: you."
He looked at her with a look that was almost like a plea. "I know you're not in love with me, but that doesn't matter... but I do want you to choose me, Swara, not... drift along... but I'd like it if you chose me, chose to be with me!"
Tears rolled down her cheeks.
He looked away, a tightness about the mouth. He swallowed and turned to her again. He leaned forward, wiped away the tears and took her hands in his. "Mat ro, Swara! it's ok. I'm sorry - not for kissing you but for taking you unawares... Don't be angry, upset or worried, please! Nothing will happen between us unless you want it. I promise!"
