Born to popular screenwriter Salim Khan, actor Salman, 50, didn't have to struggle hard or had to bear the burden of making it in Bollywood on his own. Taking his lineage forward, he forayed into the showbiz world with 1988 film 'Biwi Ho To Aisi' as a supporting actor. But it was the smashing debut in 1989 film 'Maine Pyar Kiya' of the lean and completely raw Salman that helped him earn huge popularity. Ever since he played Prem, he managed to flatter many and continued to set the cash registers ringing with multiple Bollywood blockbusters in his close to three-decade-long career.
However, his legal run-ins made him get known for his notoriety quotient. But the understanding of Salman by his fans has undergone a huge change in the last many years.
From being referred to as the bad boy of Bollywood, Salman has now become an actor who is liked and followed by many. So despite his arguments with photo journalists and several other spats, the selfless Salman has been successful at impressing everyone with humanitarian work. Here's a look at the instances that prove Salman's charitable genius...
Salman's Veer initiative was meant particularly for the differently-abled children. With The American India Foundation, the actor worked on building avenues where the kids could be made part of the mainstream with the special focus on their abilities. The initiative had reportedly also been training more than 1000 people to ensure they get right employment.
In January 2012, Salman's Being Human foundation decided to pay more than Rs 40 lakh and free more than 400 inmates who were languishing in UP prisons even after completing their terms.
In July 2013, the actor launched Little Hearts Program by Fortis Memorial Research Institute in Gurgaon. The programme was a collaboration by Khan's NGO Being Human and Fortis Foundation. Salman also met the 19-month old girl Roona Begum from Agartala. The girl was suffering from hydrocephalus - a medical condition that led to a swollen head due to accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in her brain cavities.
While shooting for Bajrangi Bhaijaan' in Pahalgam, Salman met 75-year-old lady, Zaina Begum, who approached him with an 'application' seeking his help. The old lady with her 40 year old widow daughter had been facing troubles in raising and supporting her four grandchildren. After approaching Salman, the actor told Zaina's eldest grandson that he be with his team till he finished shooting his upcoming film Bajrangi Bhaijaan.
It was solely because of his unconditional love for children that made Salman be closely associated with Maaya Foundation with the only aim to offer free treatment to children facing facial deformities, known as Craniofacial Deformities.
