Yeah, I'm starting another thread about lyrics. Well, that's the part of a song that interests me most, so I hope you guys will bear with me. 😳

Have you noticed a lyricist repeat the same words and patterns over and over again? Well, two lyricists who I've noticed doing this are Javed Akhtar (although he makes sure most of the song is original) and Sameer.

One example for Javed Sahib is using practically the exact same line in the two songs "Sitara Aankhen" from Aur Pyar Ho Gaya and "Salaam" from Umrao Jaan. In "Sitara Aankhen" it goes "Salaam Karni Ki Aarzoo Hai, Idhar Jo Dekhen Salaam Karloon" whereas in "Salaam, it's goes like this "Salaam Karne Ki Aarzoo Hai, Idhar Jo Dekho Salaam Karlen." In addition, he tends to use the words "halke, chake, dhake, kal ke" a whole lot! I'll post examples of this later.

As for Sameer, here's a post that I wrote for another forum a few months ago. I think you'll see what I mean.

You guys wont believe this...I noticed that Sameer's lyrics are very repetetive and found some similarities in different songs. Then I did a search of some of those words and found even more songs with the same words and rhyming patterns. Take a look at this:

Aapke Pyaar Mein (Raaz)
* "Aapke Pyaar Mein Hum Savarne Lage"
* "Jism Se Rooh Mein Hum Utarne Lage"
* "Hum Sanam Had Se Aage Guzarne Lage"
* "Toot Ke Baazuon Mein Bikharne Lage"

Subah Hogi (Waqt)
* "Dilbar Ki Baahon Mein Dilkash Panaahon Mein Hum Savarte Jaayenge"
* "Saanson Ke Aangan Mein Tan Mann Se Dhadkan Mein Hum Utarte Jaayenge"

Dil Dhak Dhak Karne Laga (Jaane Hoga Kya)
* "Main To Teri Nazron Se Teri Jaan Mein Utarne Laga"
* "Bhar Ke Mujhe Baahon Mein Tu Had Se Guzarne Laga"

Kitna Pyaara Pyaara Hai Samaan (Footpath)
* "Toot Ke Bikhar Jaane De Saanson Mein Utar Jaane De
...Rok Na Mujhe Pyaar Mein Had Se Guzar Jaane De"

Tum Bin Na Hum Jee Sakenge (Mere Jeevan Saathi)
* "Yeh Lamha Yahin Pe Theher Jaane Do, Humen Toot Ke Bhikhar Jaane Do
...Jawaan Dhadkanon Mein Utar Jaane Do, Hadon Se Bhi Aage Guzar Jaane Do

Yoon Hi Hum Tumse Pyaar (Khakee)
* "Jism Se Rooh Mein Hum Utarte Rahe"
* "Aake Aaghosh Mein Hum Savarte Rahe"
* "Khushbu Ki Tarah Hum Bikharte Rahe"

Churaao Na Dil (Deewane)
* "Baahon Mein Mujhko Bikhar Jaane De
...Had Se Bhi Aage Guzar Jaane De"

Not only are the words the same, but they're also used in a similar manner...Like, whenever he uses "Guzar", it is always in the context of "had se guzarna"...and for "Utar, its "rooh/saanson/dhadkan/jaan mein utarna." I didn't even know Sameer was THIS unoriginal!

Anyway, please post any example of repetitive lyrics if you have any. Thanks!

Javed Akhtar's "halke, chhalke" stuff:

1) Ek Shararat – Duplicate

aankhon mein halke halke, sapne hain jhalke kal ke

2) Halke Halke – Honeymoon Travels

halke halke, rang chalke

3) Yeh Samaan – Yeh Kya Ho Raha Hai

dil pe jo bojh the woh saare halke huwe

zindagi mein naye rang hai chhalke huwe

4) Ooh Yeah – Yeh Kya Ho Raha Hai

rang hai dhalke dhalke, jaam hain chhalke chhalke

5) Kuch Na Kaho – 1942 A Love Story

kitne gehre halke, shaam ke rang hai chhalke

parbat se yoon utre baadal jaise aanchal dhalke

6) Yeh Fizayen – Main Hoon Na

ab halke halke se, rang hain chalke se

aanchal hai dhalke se, haan

7) Kitni Baatein – Lakshya

yaad aaye lamhe kal ke, yeh aansoo kyoon hai chhalke

Suhana, you should have been in the intelligence wing of a country's defence system.šŸ˜†šŸ˜†šŸ˜†. You have very good keen observation, analytical & a dedicated researcher's trait which would be an asset to any spy network šŸ˜‰

Keep coming with the absolutely interesting topics and will try to contribute in whatever means possible.šŸ‘šŸ¼

Regarding Sameer, i think he was responsible was the excessive use of the word "Janam" in Hindi songs of the early 90s after the success of Ashiqui.

first of all, great topic,suhana....i must say ur topics interest me tremendously, irrespective of whether we agree with each other/not on our viewpoints šŸ˜‰ , i agree that sameer gets very repititive(never liked his poetry much..sorry sameer fans)
there was one thing of gulzar that I noticed.I don't think this will qualify as repetitive lyrics.....i'm posting it coz i don't know the meaning of this word šŸ˜† .... just wondering if u cld help

chappa chappa charkha chale

auni bauni aariyan teri
bauni bauni beriyon tale

(wht the hell does that auni bauni mean..plz help)

ticket to hollywood
auna bauna hi sahi dil ka kona hi sahi

I know this doesn't qualify as repetitive lyrics...it just caught my attention coz i've never heard this word 'auna bauna' before from any other lyricist and this guy goes and uses the same weird word twice!!

Another help from u,while i am at it, i might as wel ask šŸ˜†

I cldn't fathom the meaning of the first two lines of the song 'ticket to hollywood'.For all gulzar's deep meaning poetry( šŸ˜‰ ),he got me this time.I thought this was a fun song and he uses words and phrases never used before. 😊 ......The man is the right combination of a genius(i know u disgaree) and nutcase(maybe u agree?? šŸ˜† )

anyway the lyrics...if u cld help me out are

os mein kholi mint ki goli meri khushboo biba
ganni se kaate maanjhe ki dori kaategi tu biba
auna puana hi sahi dil ka kona hi sahi

what i understood is that os is dew and kholi(house??),
ganni/kanni...no idea,some sharp instrument i presume,manjha...after browsing the net for 1/2 an hr,i found,was a type of kite festival/kite(???)....ok he really lost me here.plz help if u can 😊

Kumar Ji, thank you very much. I'm glad you find my topics interesting. Just to let you know, I am actually a dedicated reseracher, but it's not in any intelligence wing. I'm working on fighting cancer. 😃

I agree that Sameer used Jaanam a lot. I'm remember a few songs, but I'll try to think of more and make a list.

hey, I don't think our opinions are all that different. I'm clearly not a fan of Sameer either. Anyway, I respect Gulzar...but his style in just not my favorite.

About auna bauna and auni bauni, I have absolutely no clue what they mean. However since they were in "Chappa Chappa" I'm thinking they must be Punjabi, so hopefully someone who speaks Punjabi will be able to clarify it for you.

The other lines that you posted from "Ticket To Hollywood" seems to just be senseless rambling, but I haven't heard that part of the song so I can't say for sure. I'm currently in a bus heading to work, but later today, I'll try to figure it out for you. Most likely by then we'll have some other opinions too.

Thanks for contributing to my topics!

šŸ‘ wow, what a topic.

actually I was thinking abt posting a thread about bollywood lyrics for a long time. this wd have been an ideal time to do so. But I am going to visit india in 20 days and have lots of paperworks to catch up. I will however difinitely post it whenever I come up with a little time. I am marking you Suhana and also N. Sinha-ji, because I will need a lot of help in that.

Coming back to the topic, I don't know if you reckon Nachiketa Chakrabarti [except bengali people of course]. That guy sang a few hindi song [in Omkara also] but he is a big name in contemporary bengali music. He once described these lyrics as
"Tumi ami, ami tumi, permutation ar combination"
[I think it does not need a translation, Tumi=you, ami=I]

It best describes 90% bollywood songs we listen till today.
