Dilwale' box office collections vs Bajirao Mastani': As the big Bollywood clash between Dilwale', which stars Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol and Bajirao Mastani', which hasDeepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh in starring roles, released today at theatres across the country occupancy rate trends indicate that SRK's movie has grabbed an early lead at the B.O. With 70% while Deepika's Bajirao' managed 30% - the movie is being screened amid protests by right-wing outfits.

"Dilwale' has opened to an occupancy of 70% while Bajirao Mastani' opened at 30%. The opening day Dilwale' collection will be somewhere around Rs 21-22 crore. Bajirao' might settle for a Rs 10-12 crore opening day figure," Girish Wankhede, of production-distribution company Entity One, said.

Directed by Rohit Shetty, Dilwale' reunites the iconic pair of Shah Rukh Khan-Kajol after five years and is a commercial potboiler with a dose of romance, comedy and action. Bajirao Mastani', starring Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra, on the other hand is a historical romance saga directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh said the opening of "Dilwale", which also stars Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon, will be within the range of "very good to excellent."

"Dilwale' has opened better. It is too early to give a number now but it is in the range of very good to excellent. Bajirao Mastani' is slightly slow and is within the range of ordinary to good."

"Bajirao Mastani" narrates the love story of the Maratha warrior Peshwa Bajirao I and his second wife Mastani. While Ranveer and Deepika play the eponymous roles, Priyanka is seen playing Bajirao's first wife Kashibai.

Adarsh, however, feels word of mouth for the Ranveer-Deepika starrer is very positive which might help the film.

"The word of mouth for Bajirao Mastani' is very strong, it will gain momentum by the evening shows, but the masses are loving Dilwale'. Both the films will continue to do well as we have Christmas weekend followed by New Year. It is an open ground."

Manoj Desai, exhibitor and owner of G7 Cinemas here, said both the films are doing well in his properties despite their different genres.

"Both Dilwale' and Bajirao Mastani' opened to 100 per cent occupancy here. The shows are full and the audience response looks very promising as of now."

Adarsh feels the clash has hampered the screen count of both the movies, apart from dividing the audience.

"Not only the audience gets divided because of the clash but also the screen and show timings. Having said that, two good films can co-exist as has happened in the past too."

Dilwale To Beat PRDP Holiday Opening In Some Circuits

Dilwale will beat the holiday opening day figures of Prem Ratan Dhan Payo in some circuits, it is mainly small circuits where it is a 100% certainty to beat Prem Ratan Dhan Payo but sill considering less screens, competition from another film and no holiday it was not expected to beat anywhere.

The figures of Dilwale as compared to Prem Ratan Dhan Payo will be better in Assam and Tamil Nadu / Kerala. These are small circuits but bigger circuits like Bihar, West Bengal and Mysore also have a chance. West Bengal and Mysore are evening circuits and could reach the numbers of Prem Ratan Dhan Payo despite the opening being less.

The real big circuits like Mumbai, Delhi/UP and East Punjab are well short but that is on the expected lines due to the circumstances.

The fate of Bajirao Mastani hangs on the business of Delhi / Punjab and Gujarat. Mumbai city and Pune are doing pretty well especially the latter but needs support of either (preferably both) North or Gujarat to go anywhere.

The film is very poor in single screens outside Maharashtra so that big chunk of multiplex business in Delhi and Punjab becomes most important.The collections remained low in both North and Gujarat even in afternoon shows and it will be about the post 6pm audience.

It's very hard to describe Rohit Shetty's Dilwale as anything other than a mixed cuisine buffet, given that it tries to offer a little bit of everything to please just about everyone. You want comedy? Come on over, we've got Johnny Lever, Sanjay Mishra, Boman Irani, and Varun Sharma. You want action? We've got fists flying, guns blazing, cars flipping. Romance, did you say? Step right in; we've got Bollywood's favorite 90s pair thawing the bergs in Iceland with their combustible chemistry. And if you like your stars younger, we'll throw in two up-and-coming heartthrobs to make your day. For what it's worth, the film even has that most elusive, rarest-of-rare secret weapons - it's got a story, I kid you not.

With so much going for it, it would take a special kind of talent to still come up short. But Dilwale, with all its bells and whistles, is far from a sure thing.

Veer (Varun Dhawan) meets Ishita (Kriti Sanon); the two quickly fall in love and become desperate to get married. But there's a hitch. Veer's elder brother Raj (Shah Rukh Khan) is hiding a dark secret. He was once a gangster in Bulgaria who went by the name Kaali. Turns out he has a history with Ishita's sister Meera (Kajol), and let's just say it isn't pretty.

Buried somewhere beneath those juvenile comic tracks - involving Johnny Lever as a petty thief, Sanjay Mishra as a stolen car-parts salesman, and Boman Irani as a local don searching his missing drugs - there's at least one good twist, and a few charming moments between Shah Rukh and Kajol who still manage to light up the screen. Varun Dhawan flexes every facial muscle to embrace the film's hammy humor, but redeems himself in a nice emotional exchange with Shah Rukh in the film's last act.

The real problem with Dilwale is the sheer artificiality of the enterprise. From the rainbow-hued sets and the touched-up landscapes in the Gerua song, to many moments of comedic and emotional payoff, so much of it just feels fake.

Doesn't help either that the film clocks in at a butt-numbing 155 minutes. I got up to leave at three different points that I imagined were the climax, only to discover that there was still more to come. Never a good sign when you're looking at your watch instead of the screen.

I'm going with two out of five for Dilwale.
