PART NINETEEN - DECAF
She began to walk away and a wave of guilt washed through my body immediately.
"Sanyu, wait!" I exclaimed without a second thought. She turned around rapidly, a questioning look on her face yet a shade of relief. "I mean... Ms. Agarwal," I coughed and quickly corrected myself. "I'm sorry for that outburst. I shouldn't have been that rude."
A hint of smile dared to escape her face, and I further clarified myself, "That doesn't mean I'm free right now though. You can set up an appointment with Avantika if you want to discuss something," I spoke nonchalantly. But who knew better than her how much of a facade that really was.
"I'll do just that then. And no need to apologize Randhir...," my eyes snapped to hers in a flash; but she cleverly added a "Sir" before I had the chance to say anything. She smiled at me and walked away, surprisingly leaving a smile on my face too.
I picked up my phone and shot Parth a text. Up for drinks tonight?

I picked up his phone to give to him, accidentally reading the message in the process. I internally groaned; "I swear to God I shouldn't have patched you two love-birds up..."
He smiled at me as he took his phone and sent a quick and affirmative reply.
"Two dates in one day Kashyap? What a player!" I smirked, voicing out the thoughts many had back in our college days as well.
"I don't know about that, but one thing is for sure..." he said putting his phone down on the counter as he walked towards me. I took a few steps back in response, raising my eyebrows as I waited for him to finish his sentence.
"I'm definitely not going to do this with him," he winked before pulling me close.
I have never been one to blush, but might I say Mr. Kashyap was blissfully talented at that as well. Letting him take the lead, I responded passionately. "I love you," we both whispered at the same time. I smiled against his lips and kept my lips there, not wanting to back out. But he did...
"Okay, one more surprise Vidu!"
"Parth, it's not even my birthday! What's going on?" I genuinely asked him. And to add the Vidushi-sass I'm known for, I added, "You're only raising my expectations from you when it really is my birthday you know," I shrugged my shoulder deliberately.
He smiled once again, which I might add always melted my heart, before replying, "Don't underestimate my abilities!" I joined his laughter as I seriously asked him what the next surprise was.
"It's not exactly a conventional surprise. I guess it's just a surprise request... I want you to meet someone..." he trailed off. "Who?" confusion evident in my voice. "It's too early if you are talking about meeting your parents Parth," I added hesitantly. "I mean I do love you and all, but it's only been a couple of months!" But he was quick to interrupt.
"No no, nothing like that!" he paused before adding, "Do you remember how you wanted me to meet your best friend that I was in a fight with?"
Realization struck; "Ohhh... her..."

I was smiling to myself as I walked towards Mr. Solanki's office. To be honest, I didn't know what I was expecting from that conversation. But that, that was certainly and completely unexpected. His smile made my heartbeat skip and flutter, something no other man has ever been able to. But more than that, his apology also made me feel even more guilty (which I didn't know was possible at this point) as I realized just how forgiving he had always been and still is.
Waiting patiently for Mr. Solanki to arrive, I took a glance at the certificates that were framed alongside the hallway walls. Vardhaan Sir must be very proud of Randhir.
I didn't have further time to look around as Mr. Solanki came in a rush and invited me in. "So Ms. Agarwal, I realize it is only your first day, but you haven't been selected out of thousands for nothing. We expect only the best out of you! So Randhir and I have decided to let you take on the task of doing background checks on the two major corporations who have expressed an interest in merging with our firm. Not only do we need typical stats of their profits and losses, but we also need a keen eye on their contribution to the engineering market in the past 10 years. So current trends, past trends, and anticipated trends; we need them all. You have one week to accomplish this, any problems?"
It took a while for me to take it all in, but I was prepared. I was determined. "No Sir!" I responded with confidence.
"Very well then, you may get started. You will need to report the completion status to me daily before 9am with hopefully a follow-up before the workday ends, and you will also give a rough oral presentation of your findings mid-week along with a final presentation to Randhir and I on Monday morning 8am sharp! Our merger conference is next week Friday, so we need to have ample time to make an informed decision."
I nodded as I jotted down the key deadlines. He handed me two files labelled Background Information. "These are all the details we have on file from previous relations with the corporations. They should help you start up!"
Picking them up and flipping through them, I anticipated how the coming week was going to go... Riaan isn't going to be happy, but I knew I had to do this. "I won't disappoint Sir!"
"Good, you may get to work then. If you need any assistance, you can ask any of the Senior Executives, including myself. So don't hesitate! And good luck!" he wished me with a smile.
Walking out, I looked forward to this challenge. And although I was pressed for time, I knew I could make it happen. Heading to my cubicle, I began reading through the files, highlighting any bits of information that I could potentially use.

"Avantika, did Vishal drop the memo for tonight yet?" I asked her; the meeting was about to start in a while and I still didn't have the agenda.
"No he didn't."
"Okay thanks," I replied, deciding to drop by Vishal's cabin. It was on my way there that I saw her, ruffling through stacks of paper with a highlighter in her hand and a pen lodged in the other hand.
--
"Farzi can you just relax? We'll finish in time!"
She glared at me; "I don't understand why you always do things last minute. Let's just get this done with and then we can waste time or whatever you want to do!"
"Okay fine, but can we at least grab lunch before starting? I'm starving!"
"You go ahead, I don't feel like it."
"Why are you so stubborn?" to which she grinned without even sparing me a glance. I sighed before I gave in and began working on the assignment.
--
She was about to turn around and so I quickly hid behind the wall. Careful Shekhawat. Don't let her see you.
I saw Vishal coming out of his cabin heading my way, and so I joined him from there, not wanting to really talk to her right now or make any contact at all.

--
"Have you been seeing her after she got back?" Vidushi questioned me.
"I guess I just couldn't resist seeing my best friend again," I admitted to Vidushi. I was angry at how she had left without any explanation, but how could I still be angry after I found out what she went through?
"Vidushi, could you please just talk to her once? I want to invite her over for dinner and I would really like it if you could give her a chance."
"Why is it so important for me to give her a chance though? You know I don't like her for what she put Randhir through!"
"I know!! I know that, but Vidushi have you realized how unhappy Randhir still is? And believe me, I've seen Sanyukta. She didn't have it any easier either!"
"Well then why couldn't she clarify it herself back then before leaving everyone just like that?"
I went quiet for a moment. I wanted to tell her the truth, but controlling myself, I added, "That's not my story to share Vidu. But trust me, once you know the truth, your anger will vanish. Not to mention maybe you'll think the same thing I'm thinking," the last bit I whispered softly. I just want to see them happy Vidu...
I looked at her patiently, and she finally gave in. "Fine!" she exhaled deeply. "Tomorrow? You have Saturday nights off anyway!"
"Yea sure," she reluctantly agreed.
Now it's only after a matter of time that Vidushi will understand, and hopefully feel the same about, just why I'm doing all this...
