Seventy British Bangladeshi students gathered at Kensington Town Hall, London, UK, on Saturday 13 January to receive awards for their outstanding achievements in the 2006 UK GCSE and A Level examinations.
The award ceremony was hosted by His Excellency Sabihuddin Ahmed, High Commissioner for Bangladesh in the UK. Mr Ahmed said: "Bangladesh and Britain are bound together by centuries-old bonds of friendship, cooperation and commonly held values, and in this relationship the British- Bangladeshi community constitutes the most integral part."
The ceremony was attended by a host of UK Members of Parliament, including the Right Honourable Alan Johnson MP, Secretary of State for Education and Skills. Presenting the awards to the students, the Right Honourable Alan Johnson said: "I want to pay tribute to those identified as the highest performers from the Bangladeshi community. I am confident that they will go on to play a key role in wider society, contributing to Britain's economic and social future."
Tom Austin, Director, University of Cambridge International Examinations, also attended the ceremony. He said: "I was delighted to be present to help celebrate the students' wonderful successes."
University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) has a long and proud relationship with schools and students in Bangladesh. CIE provides Cambridge International O and Cambridge International A Level syllabuses to many schools in Bangladesh.
