Part 5
Dadi, Ragini, and Menka were distressed over the party incident and the shock Yuvraj had received. They had been horrified enough the earlier time when Suhani had screamed at him to shut up, and this was even worse. Wives shouldn't speak that way to their husbands! This was terrible. They discussed Suhani's attitude towards him and, knowing how much self-respect their Yuvraj had, wondered what he would do next.
"I suspected that she doesn't much like him," Ragini commented. "Why did she marry him, then?"
"She's less distant now, but her upbringing has been such that she feels we are not quite as good as her," Menka remarked thoughtfully.
"My poor Yuvraj, my poor baccha," groaned dadi. "How will he bear this?"
"Should we talk to her?" Ragini asked hesitatingly. She wasn't very keen on this, as Suhani gave off 'don't mess with me' vibes, but maybe they could make her understand what her words yesterday would have done to Yuvraj and discuss how she could heal the chasm. But before anyone could reply, Pratima spoke--she was standing in the doorway and had heard them.
"No one will say anything to Suhani. She's still here, isn't she? They can sort it out themselves. Stay out of it!" Pratima ordered, before marching off. She was irritated at Yuvraj for messing things up like this. Stupid boy, why did he have to ask Suhani anything!
Dadi, Ragini, and Menka looked nervously at each other. Pratima's word was law. "Saurabh was so upset," Ragini whispered, looking towards the door to make sure sasu maa had gone. "He said she should just go home to her parents if this how she behaves."
"But Ragini jiji, I don't think she wanted to hurt him. I was near them, I heard him asking her over and over, and she finally blurted that out."
"But Sharad! His best friend, his cousin! Why say that?" They finally decided to wait and see.
Meanwhile Suhani was feeling worse and worse about having brought up Sharad. Why hadn't she just shut up? She didn't know what to say to him now. What should she do? When Yuvraj got home, very late, he was surprised to see her still up. She put aside her mobile, on which she'd been playing games to pass the time, and opened her mouth to try and break the ice, but he spoke first. "Suhani, I'm very sorry you were forced into this marriage," he said, very formal and distant. "You're free from my side. We can break this off and you can find someone who's more your style. Like Sharad," he added, with an undercurrent of bitterness.
"I told you that was nothing! Do you want me to go?" she asked in a small voice, coming up to him and touching his arm. He flinched so obviously that she removed her hand.
"I think it's best," he said. "Why a meaningless marriage only in name? I'll drop you off tomorrow."
"Not tomorrow. I've promised to attend that charity function with you tomorrow, and there's dad's company offsite 2 days later where both of us have to go. I'll tell my parents then and leave after that. What difference will a few days make?"

Sandi, how on earth did you let me get away with such short chapters?
Part 6
They attended the charity do together, hardly talking to each other. Suhani was feeling a strange reluctance to do what she'd wanted to since they got married--leave and return home. She told herself that it was only because he was a nice guy and she hadn't wanted to hurt him or leave on a sour note. Yuvraj, meanwhile, was struggling with the disclosure that had crashed his flight of dreams of a happy married life with the girl he loved, and he felt sick at heart. He had actually cried over it in the bathroom.
The company offsite was a weekend at the Riverside Resort Maduka, and they were to reach there on Friday evening, returning on Sunday. When they got there, it was already dark, and they were the first arrivals, apart from her parents, sister and brother-in-law. Most people would only come the next day. Yuvraj and Suhani settled into their room; she wondered how he was going to persist in sleeping separately here--as if it made any difference! They were exceedingly polite with each other since her revelation, almost formal. It felt so strange.
He took in the fact that he would have to share the bed with her unless he slept on the floor, which seemed a little extreme. When they met up with her family for dinner, she thought it was about time she broke the news about her impending return to her father's house. Her dad was shocked and angry, but her mother was delighted, try as she did not to show it. Bhavna was upset, but didn't say much beyond expressing regret. Suhani felt irritated at her for so obviously feeling sorry for Yuvraj. What about her, she was her sister! It wasn't that easy for her either, but SHE wasn't getting any sympathy.
Yuvraj participated in a friendly cricket match with the company employees the following afternoon, but spent the rest of the time in the room. His father-in-law coaxed him out in the evening to mingle with the others, and he was too well mannered to refuse. He knew many of the Srivastav company employees from the matches he played for the company, and talked with whoever came up to him. Preoccupied as he was, he ate too many pretzels and then needed some water to slake his thirst, but settled for a drink a passing waiter offered him. It tasted funny, but he quickly swallowed it and took another. Suhani was drinking cocktails a little more quickly than she should--she usually stuck to one, because she didn't much like drinking and got high real quick. But what the hell, she thought. She was celebrating the end of her marriage. Hic. She was leaving her nerdy -sweet- geeky - cute- fool- quite attractive husband and going back. She felt dizzy. She should go lie down for a while, she thought.
Yuvraj's head was spinning. Oh God was that ALCOHOL in those drinks? Ram Ram! He better slip away and sleep it off. He tottered to his--their--room and fell on the bed. He closed his eyes for a moment, and when he opened them, Suhani was passing by in wet hair and just a towel. He was dreaming again. But he sat up anyway and caught her hand and pulled her onto him.
