Hi all,

Started a new series about battle of Haldighati.
It will be detailed in the same manner as the Battle of Chittor series, made earlier.

Posted part-1 of that series today. This article is by Radhika.

The Battle of Haldighati is perhaps the most famous battle that Maharana Pratap fought against the Mughal forces led by Raja Man Singh.

The outcome of the battle of Haldighati was indecisive. Both parties claimed victory in their accounts but none had the strength to pursue and vanquish the other immediately after the fierce assault, as we will see in the succeeding articles on the Haldighati battle.

This article marks the beginning of the series of articles, which will talk about the Battle of Haldighati, just like a detailed series was posted regarding the Battle of Chittor.

2 other articles, related to Haldighati, have been previously posted on this blog. Their links are :

1. Rare Stone Inscription about the Battle of Haldighati Discovered near Udaipur this year
2. Chetak and Maharana Pratap | Eternal Legend ~ An Unforgettable Tale | With Pictures from Haldighati Museum

What is relatively little known is that prior to the Haldighati battle, Akbar tried to win over Maharana Pratap by sending proposals for treaties 4 times through his closest confidantes! Whether he was really trying for peace, was trying to subjugate Mewar easily, or was trying to prove that Pratap was an obstinate man not in favour of peace, is a matter of debate - as will be seen by the conditions he kept for the treaty.

This article presents an overview of all the 4 attempts made by Akbar to reach an agreement with Maharana Pratap, after the latter ascended the throne of Mewar (1572) and before the battle of Haldighati (1576) was fought. History shows that all these embassies of Akbar were received with due regard by the Maharana but none could bring the desired result of a long-lasting truce between the two rivals.

Akbar sent proposals throughJalal Khan Qurchi (1572), Raja Man Singh of Amer (1573), Raja Bhagwan Das of Amer (1573), Raja Todar Mal (1573).

The article also talks about possible reasons behind Akbar's attempts at truce with Mewar & possible reasons for Maharana Pratap's reluctance to submit to the Mughals.

Thanks for posting Rati!

They skipped many things about Maharana's life despite a show based on him. We never saw his administration etc. His steps to reform the shattered economy of Mewar. I feel they will show Haldighati war in details, but here also i do not want un necessary fiction.

The show is going to end ? Is it sure ?
There would be no effect of protest. I have forgotten the name of person who was the developer of this story line. Tried to contact him, but i was unable.

But one thing which this show led us to do was read about the history of Maharana, which we all would not have done otherwise. :)

Thanks for liking the post. :)

There are both positive and negative aspects to the show. It showcased MP and his struggle against Akbar. Normally many people in India, outside north India, have very little knowledge about him. Like Abhay said, the show has got us interested in his story and made us read about him.

Secondly, MP has thankfully not been reduced to a caricature like some other shows do to their heroes. This is a HUGE relief.:)

I agree we could have been shown more but i have understood TV shows cannot be expected to show history as it happened. Their shows are more like fiction based loosely on a real-life historical character.

@Abhay: TFS the link :)

It is indeed sad that they skipped these things. The show was Maharana Pratap but they made it Maharana Pratap "and Akbar" .

Instead of showing the nuances of Rajput culture and the cultural - architectural - religious development in Maharana's life, they decided to show lot of fictional things. Hope they show things better after Haldighati because the real struggle will start now.
