Hi guys! Hope alls well. even if swarya are dead and laksh is being butchered and we've mostly left the forum, I hope you will still enjoy this fic. I really loved lucky a lot and for me his story ends with Ragini's truth. I am pretty sure the cvs will take this story the old fashioned way for the old fashioned mummy aunty audience and thats why i have decided to give laksh my own story. So enjoy! I posted the Prelogue and chapter 1 before but doing it again for those who maybe haven't read it.

PS: if you think anyone else would be interested in reading please let me know and i will pm them as well! 😊

I actually had an epiphany and decided to write this story. Its about Laksh's life post Swaragini. I realized that in all this drama, the person who everyone cares about the least is Lakshya. His brother pretends to care for him but is more engrossed in unburdening his own guilty conscience, Swara doesn't give a shit and Ragini doesn't care about anyone but Ragini. Thus, I decided to give Lakshya someone who does give a shit about him and I want to see Ragini handed her share of misery and I don't think Swara is the person to do it. So I'm introducing a new character. Read and find out.

So Ragini's truth is out and Swara is still pretending to be Sanskar's wife to do damage control for Ragini. She may or may not be in love with Sanskar, but that'll hardly factor into my story, but Laksh does love her and she definitely hasn't totally forgotten about her feelings for him, just busy being typical serial heroine that's all.

WARNING: Laksh's heroine is a total bitch. Only a bitch can handle a bitch. Thus, this character, played by: Shruti Kanwar cos I like her talli acting and she can play a straight forward in your face bitch and play sweet but sexy...but mostly cos I like her talli acting.

PRELOGUE- TO BE CINDERELLA

YEAR 2021

He wished he had shoes. The cold sand beneath his toes felt uncomfortable, like prickly little icicles. But SHE'D insisted that they come here atleast once every year. He could never understand her fascination with the cold English beach side, in all seasons. And her insistence on walking barefoot on the beach; for someone who loved shoes as much as she did, she really loved walking barefoot. But she loved shoes. A lot. Owned over two hundred pairs of them. Strangely enough it was her love for shoes that made me realize how much I cared...(FLASHBACK TO 2015)

A SEMI-COLD EVENING IN THE HEIGHT OF FALL ON AN ENGLISH BEACHSIDE, THERES A BONFIRE BLAZING AND GROUP OF YOUNG FRIENDS PARTYING: LAKSH FIGURED THAT IT WOULD BE A WELCOME DISTRACTION FROM THE STORM OF SADNESS THAT PERVADED HIS LIFE. IF NOT HE COULD DRINK HIMSELF NUMB.

EVERYONE WAS DANCING, AND HAVING A GOOD TIME, LAKSH WAS SITTING AT A DISTANCE ALONE, WHEN SHONA CAME AND SAT DOWN BESIDE HIM.

S: Lucky tum kab tak aise depressed baethe rahoge?

L: Main depressed nahi hoon Shona. Just bored. Pee k aise nach ne se koi interesting nahi ho jata.

S: Ya right! Tu sachayi maan le Lucky. You are boring.

L: Its not my fault that you cant entertain me.

S: Main entertain nahi kar sakhti?!? Aisa koi kaam hi nahi hain iss duniya mein jo Shona nahi kar sakhti samjhe?

L: Accha? Toh mujhe entertain kar.

S: Thik hain bol tujhe Cinderella ki story maloom hain?

L: Kya?!? Tune mujhe ek choti si ladki samjha hain kya?

S: Offo Lucky just say yes or no?

L: Not really

S: Accha, toh sun. Ek ladki thi, Cinderella, bohut khubsoorat aur sabse pyaar karnewali. Sabse sweet. Par jab woh bohut choti thi uski mummy use chor k chali gayi thi. Uski daddy usse bohut pyaar karti thi par ek din daddy bhi chod ke chale gaye. Ladki bilkul akeli ho gayi. Sab ne usse naukrani banadia. Yaha tak uske saare shoes bhi usse chin liye. Par ek din ek Prince Charming aya aur usse sabse beautiful, perfectly balanced, (her eyes started glittering as she spoke about it) Swarovski encrusted, perfect size ki- jaise uske liye hi bani- six inch Laboutins deke uss ladki ko apna bana liya, usse princess banaliya. Main bhi bilkul Cinderella ki tarah hoon...

L: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Shona tujhe daru kuch zyada hi char gayi hain. Tu aur Cinderella? Ya right! Tu sweet aur polite? Tu naukrani? Please! Jiske aas paas paach paach videsi maids ghumte hain, woh tu- Cinderella jaisa?!? HAHAHAHAHAHA! Tu waise bhi bohut zyada peeti hain, kuch kam karde daru, tujhe delusions hone lagi hain. Aur woh kya tha? THE PERFECT SHOE?!? Kya bakwas retelling tha? Fairy aur magic kaha gayi? Aur stepmother?

S: Real life mein kisi bhi gham ki koyi magic solution nahi hoti Lucky. Koi fairy godmother nahi hoti. Kahani mein jo hota hain who real life mein nahi hota hain Lucky. Par shoes hote hain, aur woh mujhe bohut khush karte hain. Aur meri story chahe zitni hi bakwas ho, tujhe toh hasa diya na?

Laksh stops laughing immediately and looks at Shona and finds her staring at him. He helplessly stares back. Something about her gaze holds his in place and something about that stirs his heart. They don't move for what feels like ages. Finally Shona decides to get up and Laksh looks away awkwardly. She extends her hands and Laksh looks up questioningly.

S: Chal uth Maheshwari! Tujhe hasaa diya na? Toh ek dance toh banta hain na?

Laksh looks at her with a smile on his face, nods and gets up to dance.

L: Chal dekhte hain what you've got Bengalan.

S: Be careful mujhe zyada challenge maath kar. Pachtayega. Main trained dancer hoon.

They start dancing, both rhythm to rhythm completely in sync. Soon they got lost in their chemistry and Laksh grabbed her hand and noticed a tattoo on her wrist. He pulled her back against himself and whispered in her ears, the husk in his voice surprising himself.

L: Nice tat. Yahi hain yah aur kahin bhi?

Shona's reaction to him surprised him even more. She took his hand and placed it right below breasts and moved her lips on his neck and whispered.

S: Yaha bhi hain...aur...

She moved his hands down to her jutting pelvic handles. Both of them were now grinding to the rhythm, not even space for air left between them, Laksh's face cuddled into the crook of Shona's neck. He turned her around to see her beautiful face. She put her arms around his neck and he pulled her flush against his body. He was about to kiss her when suddenly Shona's feet landed on a particularly sharp barnacle. It hurt and she was sure it was bleeding. But she also knew Laksh was about to step on it as well. She immediately let go and crouched down and placed her hand on the barnacle before Laksh's feet fell on it.

S: AHH!

Her hands began to bleed. Laksh immediately got down on her level.

L: Shona yeh kya kar dia tumne? Oh my god! Tumhare toh haath mein bohut chot aiye hain. Aisa kyun kiya?

Shona looked up from her bleeding hands confused as to what had just happened. Why she did what she did.

S: Woh tumhe chot...tumhe chot lag jati. Isi liye...maine...

That brought back Laksh into reality. She did this for him...she put herself at risk for his sake...he knew that emotion, cos he'd do the same, for Swara. That means...she...then he saw more blood flowing out of her feet and he broke off his train of thoughts.

L: Shona tumhari paero se bhi khoon nikal raha hain! Shit! Tujhe toh first aid ki zaroorat hain!

S: Lucky! Relax! Kuch nahi hain Maheshwari. (She takes off her shirt and sits in her bikini. Laksh cant help but stare at her tattoos on her side and on her pelvic bones), yeh le, aab ghurna baandh kar aur yeh shirt katke mere haath paer bandh de, par usse pehle ek peg whisky mere ghao ke liye, aur phir ek aur...dard ke liye.

L: Bewdi kahiki. (Laksh laughs softly)

As he is tying her bandage, he watches her down her drink looking dazed and confused, not really sure of her own actions.

L: Shona tune aisa kyun kiya?

S: Kya kiya? Arre Maheshwari its not a big deal.

L: Shona your bleeding. Mere liye yeh sab kyun kiya?

S: I don't know. Par tum jabhi bhi dukhi hote ho na Lucky, toh mujhe bohut dukh hota hain...paata nahi kyun...main...

Laksh pulls her into his embrace and before he knows it they're kissing each other senseless. And then magic happens.

CHAPTER 1 TO LOVE THE LOVABLE, TO GRIEVE THE LAMENTABLE

LAKSHYA (OUR LUCKY SAHIB)

SHONA MALHOTRA

MEET SID MUKHERJEE (PS: I LOVE HIM)

MEET SHUCHITRA DEV THAKUR (SHUCHI/ DIDI/ DIDA 2 PS I LOVE HER TOO)

Laksh is totally at a loss, Sanskaar tries to talk to him but he shuts him off, Ragini apologizes and begs him not to throw her out of his life and accept her as his wife, AP tries to talk to him and apologizes for not standing by his love earlier. He listens to everyone without any reaction. Finally, Swara intervenes but tries to make a case for Ragini, hearing her talk about the merits of her crazy sister and how he should accept his marriage with a murderer breaks him, tears stream down his face but he apologizes to Swara for his behavior with a simple- I am very sorry for everything' and leaves without listening to her further Ragini jaap. The next morning, he leaves to London without informing anyone for a business deal. He reaches London by evening and heads for his business associate, London based billionaire Mr Malhotra's house to talk business before getting pissed drunk beyond his limits. Upon reaching there, he realizes theres a Durga pooja going on there with many Bengali women putting sindoor on each other. The butler tells him that Mr. Malhotra will reach in an hour or two and has asked that he join the festivities in the mean time. The butler introduced him to an elderly woman- Shuchitra didi, who was Mr Malhotra's mother-in-law. She was a sight to behold, soft spoken yet confident and assertive, warm yet calculative, her intelligence and ripened wisdom reflecting in her eyes, her fashion forward Bengali saree made her look too young to be a grandmother to a teenager, it is only when she'd finally gaged him enough for her smile to reach her eyes that Laksh felt finally at ease- like he was with Dida.

Sh: Urri baba! E ki? My damad had said his business associate was a bald old Marwari, par tumi toh bilkul handsome young man hain!

L: Namaste Shuchitra maam. Na woh mere papa hain, main Laksh who. DPM ka beta. Unki jagai main humare deal ko handle karunga.

Sh: Pehle toh call me didi, accha hain ke tum young man aagaye, varna Ranveer ke toh saare associates buddhe hotein hain. Can I offer you a drink?

L: Nahi woh...

Sh: Kyun drink nahi karte hon? Karte ho na? Laksh nods. Toh kya? Shambhu! Saab k liye ek whiskey lao! Toh mera dusri baat, she looks at him sternly- young ho par meri natin se thoda door rehna (Laksh spits out his drink in shock).

L: Kya?!? Nahi main toh sh...main aisa kuch...apko fikar karne ki zaroorat nahi hain.

Sh: Kyun? Gay ho? (Laksh shakes his head violently) Dekho beta tum soch rahe hoge k abhi toh main iss ghar mein aaya aur yeh pagal buriya kya keh rahi hain? par main saaf saaf keh deta hoon. mera bari mein jo bhi young ladka aata jaata hain woh mere natin se pyaar karne lagta hain, woh thodi pagal hain aur khubsoorat bhi bohut hain, mujhpe jo gayi hai. Par bohut mushkil se mera honewala grandson-in-law ne use finally pataliya shaadi karne ko. Mujhe iss mein koi koi garbad nahi chahiye, thik ache?

Laksh bursts out laughing at her comical expression.

L: Thik ache didi. He laughs and says, aap jaise beautiful woman k rehte hue main bhala aapki natin ko kyun dekhunga?

Shuchitra laughs.

SM (Shidhanto Mukherjee played by Sidharth Malhotra just cos he's foxy): Shuchi! Shuchi!

The good looking young man, about the same age as Laksh rushes towards them.

SM: Shuchi tomar natin phir se pagal ho gayi hain.

Sh: Kya? Accha inse milon. Yeh Laksh Maheshwari Kolkata se tumhare khadoos shoshur ka associate. Laksh yeh mera most handsome aur favorite to be grandson-in-law Shidhanto.

SM: Hi dude. Nice to meet you, Im Sid. They shake hands. Shuchi Im your only to be grandson-in-law, aab please amar shathe aao, aapki natin pagal ho gayi hain.

Sh: Toh kya hua? Aab toh tumko de diya. Aab tum shamlao uss musibat ko.

SM: Arre Shuchi! As if tumhara natin mera sunti hain. Aao mere saath.

Laksh amusedly watches their exchange. Suddenly, he remembers dida, his lovely lovable dida, who'd told him the truth. Whom he'd disbelieved. He feels a pang in his heart for his lost relationships, for his lost love and their lost family. He sees Sid whispering something in didi's ears and sees her look a bit drained. He's about to ask her if everything is ok but before he can ask, she cuts him off.

Sh: Laksh beta tumi samne jao, aashirwad lo, ya phir bar mein jao ek aur drink lo. Humare yaha gaana bas shuru honewala hain, main abhi aayi.

Laksh nods and proceeds towards the crowd but half way in he changes his mind and heads towards the bar. F**k protocols, if they don't care why should he? Might as well drink his misery away. As he sits down at the bar, he hears music start to play in the background and a beautiful voice singing- Nagada Sang Dhol. It transports Laksh to one of the happiest time of his life, a time when he fell in love with his best friend, he remembered how captivated he was watching her dance, her spirit, her light, it was the most beautiful thing in the world. In the background he heard the sounds of dancing footsteps and as he downed his drink, still lost in his memories. He heard people gasping and noises of metal clanking when suddenly he heard a familiar voice calling out from the background.

SM: SHONA!!!

He immediately turned around to see Sid running to the stage calling for Shona, he turned towards the stage and without a second consideration, he ran towards the stage where the girl in her Bengali saree was twirling around with a thal full of sindoor, spreading the red color on everyone, as if in a trance. She was about to fall and Laksh ran to save her. Both Sid and Laksh were running towards the girl. Laksh got there first and she fell right into his arms after dropping the thali of sindoor, the last of it falling on her and Laksh. Laksh's mind was too clouded to process anything. All he could think about was that his Shona was hurt and he needed to fix her. He carefully put her down on the stage and held her hand all the while panicking and calling out for help.

L: Shona! Shona! Please utho Shona. Im sorry. Im SO sorry! Please mujhe maaf kardo. Please get up. Koi pani lao! Please!

Sid gets there and takes the girl's head into his lap.

SM: Shambhu kaka pani aur nimboo lao! Shona? Babe are you ok? Please say something.

The desperation in his voice brings Laksh back to reality. This isn't his Shona. She is another's. Guessing from Sid's reaction, his Shona, Mr Malhotra's daughter.

SM: Laksh thank you yaar. Tumne ise girne se bachaliya.

Laksh nods. L: Par isse huwa kya hain?

Sid smiles a sad smile.

SM: Wahi jo har roz hota hain. Aaj bhi thoda zyada ho gaya.

Shambhu kaka brings the lemon and water. Sid squeezes the lemon into the girl's mouth and pours water on her face and down her mouth to wash it down. The girl coughs and wakes up.

S (Shona Malhotra): AYI KE?!? UFFO! Oh Siddy!!! Tum...yaha...(hichki)...tuuummm kya...kiii kar rahe ho...hiccup?

Sid laughs at her slurring.

SM: Arre piyakkar tu phir se pk tun hogayi thi aur durga pooja mein tamasha kar rahi thi...kar rahi hain.

S: Aur humesha...wait mein uthti hoon first thik ache? She tries to stand up but she stumbles, Sid and Laksh both reach out to stabilize her.

S: Oh! Haan toh maaaiin kaahan thi? Oh yes. Siddy like always you've come to my rescue na? Par yeh janaab kaun hain? (she asks pointing at Laksh). Arre handsome tumi ke?

SM: Actually aaj Shona inho ne tumhe bachaya hain.

S: Accha? Well THANK YOU HANDSOME STRANGER!

Laksh suddenly feels annoyed at having compared his Shona to this bewda spoilt girl. He rudely hmphs and nods slightly. A gesture of anger that Shona remains oblivious to but Sid notices.

S: Waise Sid yeh kaafi hot hain nahi? Main chali jau iske saath? Laksh jerks her off immediately and awkwardly looks at Sid.

SM: Hahahaha. Ja iske saath agar yeh lena chahe, par mujhe nahi lagta k mere alava koi aur tujhe jhel payega Shona. (he looks at Laksh) Sorry dude. Yeh aisi hi hain. Pagal. Iske baaton ka bura maath manna. Nashe mein bas ainvayi bak deti hain.

S: Arre! Yeh mind kyun karega? E hero! Ami toh bas tumhe handsome bola. Agar mera jaisa hot ladki tumhe handsome bolega isse tumhe problem hain?

Sh: Shona! Eshob ki hocche? Kya karta hain tum ye saab?

Shona looks at Sid and sticks her tongue out realizing that a major tongue lashing is about to come her way.

S: Dida! You're here! Kitna deri laga diya aapne! Dekho main toh sari pehen ke Siddy ke saath niche bhi agayi. Koi garbar nahi ki.

Shuchitra looks at her incredulously.

Sh: Accha! Ulta chor kotwal ko daten? Zyada hoshiyari nahi! Sid ne mujhe sab bata diya. Tum itne der tak ghar nahi kisi bar mein tha, sharab ki boo yaha tak arahi hain. Hum dono tum ko khujte khujte pagol ho gaya, aur tu yaha pe tamasha karta hain?

SM: Shuchi jaane bhi do, dekho aab Shona aagayi na? Dekho khadi bhi hain. Aab bas party, I mean pooja enjoy karo ok?

Sh: Thik hain thik hain. Par tum isko sar pe math charhao.

SM: Thik hain Shuchi. Ab se no more sar pe charhana. Suna tune Shona?

Shona giggles and hiccups, puts her hand over her mouth when her dida glares at her. Sid picks her up bridal style and takes her away to her room to get her into bed.

Sid returns having put Shona to bed and goes to the bar in need of a stiff drink himself, and sits next to Laksh who by then was pretty drunk himself.

SM: Take it easy dude. Dekh bhai, aaj kisi aur ko godh mein uthakar le jane ki takat nahin hain mujhme.

Laksh looks at Sid and laughs at the light mannered guy. They both laugh.

L: Don't worry dude. Isse bohut zyada pk bhi godh mein nahi uthna para tha. Waise woh tumhara fiance thi na?

Sid nods

SM: Mmmhmm. Shona Malhotra, Mr Ranveer Malhotra and Late Mrs Shreya Malhotra ki ek lauti beti and unfortunately my best friend.

L: Woh thik toh hain?

SM: Oh ya! Yeh toh humara roz ka hain. Aaj toh hum lucky hain, woh khud ghar aagayi, khud saree bhi pehen liya, varna jab sharab ke saath drugs leti hain tab toh dhundte dhundte hi kahin ghante nikal jata hain. But its become a part and parcel of her charm.

Laksh looks at him shocked at his nonchalant behavior. Sid laughs.

SM: Arre chowko math. Bachpan se hum aisehi hain. Usse jitna roko woh cheez woh utna hi zyada karegi. Meri strategy simple hain boss, bas usse jo karna hain usse karne do, phir bad mein take care of her. Do teen din baad khud guilty feel karke sab rokh deti hain. Baccho ki tarah ziddi hain, bigdi huyi muhphat badtameez hain, par uska maan bacho ki tarah saaf bhi hain. Woh kabhi jhooth nahi bolti, fiercely pyaar karti hain, aur shiddat se dosti nibhati hain. Isiliye, despite the drama, drinking, drugs and boyfriends main usse nahi chod paya. Those were her addiction, she is mine.

Laksh still looks at him confused.

L: Waise its none of my business par iski problem kya hain? Itni tamashe kyun karti hain?

SM: Dost tum kyun itna pee rahe ho? Main kyun pee raha hoon? Dost tumhe bhi gham hain, aur mujhe bhi, waise hi usse bhi gham hain. Mera gham yeh hain ki main jis ladki se pyaar karta hoon, woh mujhse pyaar nahi karti hain. Mujhse shaadi ke liye han toh keh diya par iss commitment k daar se roz peeti hain par kamse kam drugs chuth gaye.

L (drunkenly says): Bhai tumhara gham toh samaj mein aata hain. Par iss ladki ka gham kuch samaj mein nahi aaya. Aisa lagta hain k woh sirf attention chahti hain, aur kuch nahi. Aur ek advice doon? Agar woh abhi shaadi nahi karna chahti hain toh mat karo. Trust me, puri zindagi kharab kar degi. Agar mandap se bhag gayi toh? Khamakha apna aur apne pure parivar k izzat k saath khilwar, aur tumhara toh koi psychopathic back up bhi nahi hain.

SM: Hahahaha. Kya story hain boss. Shona ka gham yeh hain ki usse khud pata nahi usse zindagi mein chahiye kya. Par mujhe yakeen hain k woh main hi hoon. Main janta hoon uske dil mein mere liye aaj pyaar nahi hain. Par yeh bhi janta hoon k ek din zaroor hoga. Aur yeh zaroori nahi k woh din shaadi se pehle hon. Tab tak ke liye mera pyaar kafi hain. Humari sagai ko teen mahine hogaye, agle mahine shaadi hain. Kareeb chey mahine pehle maine usse propose kiya tha. Pyaar toh main bachpan se karta hoon. Par usne haskar na keh diya. Toh maine chup chap uske faisle ko maana aur usse dur rehne laga. I started dating. I want to get married. Umar hogayi hain. Par madame ko yeh bhi bardasht nahi hua. Seedhe pohach gayi mere date par aur ladki ko bura bhala keh kar usse bhaga diya, (he laughs fondly at the memory) mujhse toh baat tak nahi ki. Agle din pohuch gayi ma baba k paas, dida aur Ranveer uncle ke saath apna rishta leke. Ma baba bohut hasse aur rishta pakka kar diya. Par usse baad mein realize hua ke woh shaadi karna hi nahi chahti. Toh phir se apni utpatang harkatein karne lagi. Woh kya hain (he whispers) she only wanted the fringe benefits. (he smiles deviously, amused at Laksh's aghast expressions).

L: Ummm...ummm...par woh toh shaadi k bina bhi...I mean...

SM: hahahahaha! Sorry yaar main bas tumhari taang khich rahi thi! Tum toh bohut easily scandalized ho jaate ho. Waise, tumhari mandap story kaafi crazy tha haan. Aur really? Who marries someone else to save their family's respect and all that? Agar dulhan bhag jaati hain toh izzat ka jo kabada hona tha woh toh ho hi gaya. Kisi aur se shaadi karke woh izzat thodi hi na wapas aanewali hain?

Laksh was stunned at the logical truth and the sheer stupidity of his decisions. He'd lost the love of his life, his bestfriend and married a psychopathic nutcase over spilt milk izzat that didn't return, on that mandap he was still left alone, he may have gone home with a bride, but still he was all alone, a loneliness that was his to bare forever now watching his love be his brother's wife.

SM: Arre bhai Laksh, kahan kho gaye dost?

L: Kuch nahi. Tum batao.

SM: Main keh raha tha k mujhe koi farq nahi padhta agar woh bhag gayi. Shona ka toh kam hain bhagna. Har roz bhagti hain. Mera kam hain usse dhundkar apne paas wapas lana. Aur main wahi karunga. Jab tak woh mere saath aana chahegi tab tak.

L: Aur agar nahi aayi toh?

Sid's smile dropped. He seemed to be thinking something before he smiled again.

SM: Shona mere saath sirf ekhi situation mein nahi aayegi, agar woh kisi aur se pyaar karti hain toh. In that case, I will bring them both back and get them married. Maine pyaar kiya hain Shona se- woh jaisi bhi hain, her good and bad mujhe sab manzoor hain, maine koi sharth nahi lagayi k she has to love me and cannot love anyone else. Main Shona ki khushi aur dosti k saath toh jee lunga par uske dard ke saath jee nahi paunga dost.

Laksh immediately thought about his socalled wife, all his guilt at being the reason behind Ragini's crazy as Swara had pointed out vanished instantly. How easily Sid said it, how lucky Shona was to have him in her life, how unlucky he was to have been loved by Ragini. No he was just unlucky. Swara never loved him enough to fight for him and Ragini only loved herself, never him.

L: Your right. Shona is lucky to be loved by you. Tumse baath karke bohut accha laga Sid.

SM: Tumse bhi Laksh. Bohut kuch keh bhi diya maine. Hope I didn't bore you with my prem kahani.

L: Haha nahi yaar, aisa kuch nahi. Waise tumhara sasur Ranveer sir kab aanewale hain?

SM: Arre! Main toh bhul hi gaya. Uncle ne kaha tha k tum iss mahiney ke liye yahi rukh rahe ho. Woh tumhe hotel mein rehne nahi denge. Waise bhi humari shaadi hain agle mahine, dost kaha hain toh dosti toh nibhani hogi, Uncle na sunne walo mein se nahi hain. Woh actually London se bahar thode kam main phas gaye hain, kal subha tak laut ayenge. And aaj toh tum definitely hotel janeki halath mein nahi ho.

Laksh nods in defeat.

L: Thik hain par yaar mujhe thoda freshen up karna tha. It was a long flight.

SM: Oh ya sure. Shambhu already saman tumhare kamre tak pohacha chuke hain. Main tumhe kamra dikhata hoon. Your on the same floor as me and Shona. So agar kuch chahiye- workwise toh mujhse aur partywise to Shona se bejhijak keh dena.

L: Wait tum bhi yahi rehte hon?

SM: Oh ya! Ma and Baba pehle London mein hi rehte the. Retirement ke baad woh dono London ke bahar ek vineyard estate mein shift ho gaye, aur mere liye business ki saari zimedari aur London mein ek akela flat chodkar gaye. Kehte hain ke shaadi k baad Shona ke saath ek naya zindagi hoga aur woh interfere nahi karna chahte. Shuchi ko paata chala toh ma baba ko sunakar mujhe ghar le aaye. Tabse main ghar jamai hoon. Bas ekhi sharth hain, hum jo bhi kare, I cant spend the night in Shona's room. Convenience ke liye ekhi floor de diya. Hahahaha.

L: Wow. Meri family bohut hi traditional hain yaar. Agar shaadi se pehle ladki ke saath mil bhi liya toh bhi problem hoti hain inhe.

SM: Hahahaha. Well hum London mein brought up hain, humare parents bhi. We're third generation English Indian. Toh humara culture bhi kuch East West hogaye hain. Upar se Bengali, we're the Indian freethinking rebels. So freedom ki koi kami nahi thi par misuse karne par daant wohi milti hain jo ki Im sure tumhe milti hogi. Shona ka case thoda alag hain. Uski ma bohut pehle hi mar gayi, aur Shuchi was too old to really discipline her especially because uncle humesha usse bacha lete hain. Aunty ke jaane k baad, Shona became his drive and his reason to live. Woh kuch bhi kare, uncle usse kuch kehne nahi dete. Par woh jitna khud ko rebellious samajhti hain, utni woh hain nahi. Anyways, you'll be here for a month so you'll figure it out yourself...or you'll be just as confused as everyone else by the mystery that is Shona. Hahahaha. Come on main tumhe kamre tak chod deta hoon.

Laksh smiled and nodded. There was no way that some spoilt brat with mummy issues was gonna intrigue him. He has been that and was in love with someone with daddy issues and married a crazy person with mummy issues. Been there done that. Now it was only him and his bottle of prime Scottish. That would be peace enough.

CHAPTER 2 BEING LUCKY

The thing about peace is that it wasn't like happiness- which couldn't be achieved through the absence of sadness, it was by definition simpler, just the lack of conflict and turmoil was peace. But achieving peace was much easier said than done. Because whilst happiness could be achieved by external stimulus, the lack of turmoil was a completely internal state of mind. You need to actually not have internal conflict to be at peace, and since peace was directly proportional to sleep, Laksh realized that sleep had evaded him for a good few months now, since the night of his sangeet ceremony with Swara. Add some jet lag and a good bottle and half of liquor and Laksh had one of the worst headaches in the history of mankind. He tried taking all sorts of pills to cure his sleeplessness, when all failed, he decided to take a stroll through the corridor. As he got out he smelt a burn smell and thick smoke coming out of the room adjacent to his. But the smell, there was something funky about it. He had smelt it before but he couldn't pinpoint it. But immediately his concern took over and he took hold of the nearest extinguisher and rushed into the room breaking the door down and covered the whole place in a thick blanket of the extinguisher carbondioxide. Through the thick pan of smoke and carbon-dioxide, Laksh couldn't see much but he could hear a loud screech.

S: WHAT THE HELL?!? WHO THE HELL ARE YOU? MERE GHAR MEIN KYA KAR RAHE HO? AUR MERE KAMRE TAK KAISE POHUCHE? SECURITY! SECURITY! SSIIIDDD!

Laksh couldn't see anything properly so he followed the sound. He needed to shut her up before the whole house woke up. He grabbed what seemed like a soft mound of..SOMETHING.

S: WHAT THE F**K?!? HOW DARE YOU GRAB MY b**t?!? WHO THE HELL ARE YOU?!?

Laksh was impossibly embarrassed and immediately moved his hands but slipped on something liquid and fell right on top of the bed with Shona underneath him. The smoke starts to clear up a bit. For the first time Laksh sees at Shona, really sees at her, she was in a white silk camisole and matching silk boxers that were meant to be sexy but somehow just looked cherubic on her, her smooth milky skin, pink full lips, long lashes covering hazel brown eyes and a thick mop of dark black curls. She reminded him of snow white. Laksh didn't know about how someone can love a brat like her but she was definitely a vision to look at. There was something very untouchably innocent about her beauty, not Swara's dewy beauty neither ragini's sharp obvious beauty. Something much more subtle. Her eyes were fire and sparkle, like they're hiding something you would love to uncover, yet it was as if she knew nothing about anything. Somewhere between a doe and a tigress, her eyes rested.

S: GET OFF ME!! DIDI! SID!

L: ARRE! SHUT UP! JUST SHUT UP! EK TOH JAAN BACHAO UPAR SE ANGREZI MADAME KE GALIYAN BHI KHAO! MAINE TUMHE JAAN BUJHKAR PAKDA NAHI THA. YAHA KUCH DIKH NAHI RAHA HAIN.

S: Meri jaan bachana...HUH? WHAT? Mere kamre ka darwaza todh ke meri jaan bachane aye the...right. CHOR! THIEF! THIEF!

L: JUST SHUT UP! MAINE DHUA DEKHA ISI LIYE AYI!

Sid runs into Shona's room upon hearing all the hustle bustle.

SM: Shona! Kya hua? Cough* cough* Kaun ghus aaya hain?

Laksh suddenly realizes the position they were in and sprung off Shona.

S: Siddy dekho yeh aadmi mere room ka darwaza todh ke ghus aaya aur upar se kehta hain ke mujhe bachane aaya hain. Aye Mr tumi kaun hain?

L: Ajeeb badtameez ladki hain! Inke room se dhua nikal raha tha! Isiliye maine darwaza toda!

SM: OK! YOU TWO SHUT UP!

They both shut up.

SM: Good. Shona meet Laksh, tumhare papa k business associate jo humare saath 1 mahine k liye rehnewale hain. He saved you from drunkenly falling on your face from the stage today. Laksh meet Shona, Mr Malhotra ki beti and my MisFortune, haha, get it Misfortune? Pun? No? Anyways, Shona Laksh tere kamre mein chori karne nahi aaya. Yeh tere ghar mein mehman hain. Aur Laksh, yaha koi aag nahi lagi thi, kamini yaha apne kamre mein bina kisi ventilation ke peechle teen ghanto se lagadar cigarette pee rahi thi.

Laksh felt really really disgusted. He knew his deep disdain for Shona's bad habits were irrational. It didn't define her as a person (although he still thought her a brat nonetheless) but he couldn't explain why, its not like he didn't have any other female friends who didn't smoke. Heck! He'd dated a girl for a month or two was a smoker, but it just...associating the name Shona with this girl, that's what bothered him. She had Swara's name, but she was nothing like his Shona.

Shona on the other hand softened immediately upon knowing he'd helped her at the pooja. She's not one to let a favor go unacknowledged.

S: I didn't know, didn't remember...she looked semi guiltily at Sid- flashes of the night coming back to her; Sid just rolled his eyes and shook his head with a reassuring smile on his face...Mr Laksh thank you so much, for saving me from a concussion...and from greater embarassment.

With her thick dark lashes fanning her downcast eyes, looking up at him once every now and then- damn! What was is it about these Bengali girls? It was the eyes; large brown eyes under a thick fan of black silky lashes. They were so expressive and true. How could he have not seen the truth in them before? If he could see the truth reflected in Shona's eyes, why couldn't he see it in his Shona's eyes? Ughh! Maybe he could bum a cigarette from this little one in exchange for forgiveness. But as soon as he looked up to accept her apology, the realization that she wasn't Swara, wasn't anything like Swara, hit him hard. He gave the coldest look he could muster and watched Shona's beautiful eyes get marred with fear and anger and sadness, Sid seemed apprehensive, confused and curious. He strode off towards the balcony. He needed air.

Shona turned to Sid,

S: iski problem kya hain? Itna gussa kis baath ki hain ise? Maine kya kiya? I swear agar usne mujhe party mein girne se nahi bachaya hota toh goli mar deti isse.

Sid turns Shona towards him.

SM: Jaan, dekh tu ainvayi gussa math kar. Laksh is a good guy. Bas teri jaisi jhalli badtameez pagal to hiss duniya mein ek hi piece hain na, isi liye shayad usse samajh mein nahi araha hoga k tere saath react kaise kare. Waise ladki toh tu bilkul palangtor hot dikhti hain, par harkate toh bilkul besharam aadmiyon wala karti hain na?

S: Haan woh toh...accha? Wah beta kya izzat hain apni honewali dharam patni ki teri nazron mein. Goli toh moody Marwari koh nahi tujhe marni chahiye. Ek kaam karti hoon Anhony ko bulakar dono ki hi murder yahi karke, body dafna deti hoon.

SM: Ai hai, par mujhe mar dene se joh tu bin sindoor k suhagan se bina sindoor k bidhwa ban jayegi, uska kya? Tab kya hoga teri rangeen wardrobe ki? Tere favourite red colour ki? Tere 200 pair jooto ki? Mushkil hain boss! Nahi kar payegi tu.

S (makes a face at Sid): Arre haath! Main nahi manti yeh sindoor vindoor, waise bhi shaadi mere liye sirf ek formality hain joh main teri khushi ke liye, teri pavitrata bhang na ho iss liye kar rahi hoon. Besides, white is a good colour on me.

She hmphs and turns around and starts walking to the balcony.

Sid rushes after her and grabs her hand and turns her around.

SM: Aab thukh bhi do gussa, mana k isi gusse pe hum marte hain, par yeh bhi jaante hain, aap humari jaan se pyaar karte hain. Kahin yeh gussa ek din jaan na lejaye humari. Wah Sid tu toh kavi ban gaya yaar! HAHAHAHA.

Shona rolls her eyes at his filminess. Sid stops laughing only to find Shona glaring at him.

S: Hogaya tera?

SM: Accha thik hain. Im serious now. Main jaake baath karta hoon usse. He's my guest for the wedding, main nahi chahta k mere dost aur mere bride mein koi takrar rahe. Par sun, zara guns aur shoot karne ki baatein zara kam kiya kar. RM papa ki Kolkata business partner hain Maheshwaris, so please Shona, thoda apne mooh aur mijaz par kaboo rakh. OK?

S: Hmmm...par meri ek sharth hain. Usse baath main karungi...ok?

SM: Thik hain, par main waha rehne wala hoon. Ok?

S: Deal.

Shona and Sid shake on it and go to approach Laksh.

IN THE BALCONY

Damn it! Why did this girl have such an impact on him? Oh god he really could use a-

S: Cigarette?

He looked to his right and saw Shona standing there next to him. He looked away immediately.

S: Nahi chahiye? Thik hain. (she lights one up and continues to smoke) Dekho Mr Laksh, main aapko nahi janti aur aap mujhe nahi jaante. Par main yeh janti hoon k aap Sid aur mere daddy ki guest hain and I don't want any problems between us.

L: Exactly, aur isi liye (he turns towards Sid) I think its better that I stay...

S: Ek minute! Meri baath abhi tak khatam nahi huyi hain Maheshwari. Dekho, tumhare paas koi karan nahi hain mujhe dislike karne ka other than two- one ki main bohut sexy hoon, aur mujhe dekhke tumhe woh wali feelings hoti hain, isi liye tum uncomfortable ho jate ho aur mujhe cold shoulder deke chale jaate ho. Agar yeh baat hain, toh bata do. Waise kaafi handsome ho toh ek chance toh banta hain. (She winks and Laksh is totally gobsmacked and stares at her with his mouth wide open whilst Sid laughs in the background) Aab muh bandh karo aur suno, option number two, tumne mujhe talli cigarette peete huye dekhkar apne dimag mein meri ek image bana li hain aur usse tumhe problem hain. Aab dekho, tumne jo bhi image banaya hain na, its probably 100% correct. Main ek brattish badtameez nautankibaz jhalli chote kapde pehenne wali piyakkar hoon, aur ami toh aisa hi hain. Agar tumhe koi problem hain, toh uss problem ko apne jeb main dalo aur uss shirt ko utaro, phir jala do. Tum Sid ka dost ho and your gonna be at my wedding, so learn to live with it, thik ache?

Laksh stares shocked at the girl's honest confession. He doesn't want to, but it really is impossible to not admire her courageous honesty. He slowly shakes his head in seeming disapproval and walks away.

Shona deflates a bit but then rolls her eyes and Sid simply looks confused.

Halfway out of the balcony, Laksh stops, sighs and looks to his back.

L: Woh cigarette...offer abhi bhi stand karta hain ya...

Sid smiles and Shona gives him the most dazzling and genuine smile he's seen in a long time. The kind his Shona used to give him. And for a moment he stops breathing and just lives in Shona's smile. But then he remembers...and he composes himself again.

S: Ofcourse milega! Aur agar tujhe koi aur cheez bhi chahiye hoga na, toh woh bhi maang sakhti ho, aisa koi cheez nahi, jo lana Shona k bas mein nahi. Thik hain Lucky?

L: Lucky? Tumhe...

S: Dekho Marwari main tumhe Lakshya nahi bulane wali. Tumhari umr kya hain 22 ya 122?!? Tum aaj se Lucky ok?

SM: Arre wah! Minute mein mere dost ko hijack kar liya aur usse nick name bhi de diya? Well Laksh don't mind, yeh iski aadat hain- Sid bhi isika dia hain. Aab toh college mein bhi kisiko yaad nahi k mera naam kya hain.

Laksh smiled, his first genuine smile in ages. Its been ages since anyones called him that, even longer since he's felt that name. But he wanted to, he wanted to be Lucky again. The sudden London rain pours down on them and it breaks his train of thoughts. Sid and Laksh run under cover to protect their cigarettes from fizzling out.

SM: Oi Shona! Pagal hain kya? Thand lag jayegi! Yaha aaja!

S: No ways Siddy! Summer rain is the best! Woo!!

L: Shona cigarette bujh jayegi!

S: Arre! Lagi 100 pound ki sharth? Nahi bujhegi!

L: What?!? Impossible!

S: Nothing is impossible!

SM: Chal lag gayi jhalli!

Laksh just watches her beauty, totally mesmerized by her. She was a petite bag of bones, but there was a glow about her milky skin, an aura that he couldn't really pinpoint.

L: She really is insane, isn't she.

SM: Absolutely man. Par kasam se yaar, ive never seen anything more perfect.

Both men stand side by side, one in open and the other in reluctant, admiration of this one little woman.

Hi Guys! Im back with part 3 of my Lucky-Shona/ Laksh FF! Till now you've met Dida and Sid. Now meet her dadi and big bad daddy malhotra! this will be it for Shona's family! please do gimme feedback everyone!

CHAPTER 3

SID AND SHONA'S MEHENDI!

MEET SHONA'S PUNJABI DADI! MRS SHALINI RAJSINGH MALHOTRA

MEET SHONA'S DEAREST DADDY MR RANVEER RAJSINGH MALHOTRA

SHONA'S PARENTS BEFORE THE PASSING OF MUMMY- MRS SHREYA MALHOTRA

During the week he'd been with the Malhotras, he'd learnt some very important things about them and about life. Firstly, nobody in the house ever failed to take Shuchitra dida's opinion on everything that happened, starting from Ranveer Sir to the servants of the house, not a leaf in this household moved against her will...accept Shona, and she hated it the most, but she oved Shona the most. And she was indeed a woman of extraordinary intelligence, poise and presence. She and Shona fought just as fiercely and they loved each other. She wanted rules and discipline in work AND play. Nothing in excess. Shona wanted freedom in everything, even freedom to choose when she obeyed rules and when she didn't. But dida never gace up but she always gave in, Shona was her heart. That was what made her love Sid so fiercely, he was the control factor of Shona's id. As long as he was there, she wouldn't ever fall into disgrace.

Second, Sid...another surprise, under the genuine smile and ease, Sid was one of the most cutthroat and shrewd businessmen he'd ever met. As much as his friends and family loved him- his employees, associates and competitors alike, feared and respected him. He was open yet elusive in a way that made Laksh salute in respect and admiration but quiver at the same time. He'd learnt that Sid not only handled his own family's business, but Ranveer sir's as well. He was the one negotiating their investment deal with Laksh and the Maheshwaris; it was the longest and the most exciting negotiation he'd ever experienced, even Sanskaar bhai on Skype, looked thoroughly exhausted. Afterwards they'd both gotten plastered in what mustve been a world drinking championship, with ofcourse Shona leading, at a party thrown Shona's friend at one of her central London penthouses. After the party ended and before the cleaning crew came, him and Sid sat around the now dirty floors of the empty penthouse drinking the counter hang over dose of liquor and listening to Shona sing melodious versions of classical Bengali songs on the piano.

Shona...last but not the least, his crazy new friend. The thread that bound them all; the center of everyones world. She really was an enigma, perfectly stupid and insanely intelligent. The girl who couldn't take a tube around east London properly, graduated top of her class from Cambridge with a degree in Mathematics and was a trained singer and concert pianist, an ability inherited from her mother and grandmother. All of Laksh's pre-conceived notions about her were true but there were SO many other layers to her, that it boggled his mind. It was her idea to convert the penthouses around central London to soundproof empty spaces, where her wealthy friends could throw soires and parties. It had three advantages- she made money and did most of her partying for absolutely free and secondly, all the upper class socializing she was required to do, came to her, she rarely had to leave her home, and last but not the least, she could be the drunkest (or highest depending on her mood) at the party cos she never had to leave to go home. The girl was a genius in her field of expertise, which were parties (and creating havoc, she lived for that). She was the most frank person he'd met, a rebel, a fair person- she held everyone, be it her own or outsiders to the same moral standard, she wouldn't hesitate to do to a friend or to family what she'd do to a foe if they cross her code- probably because she was a refreshingly unopinionated person. Yet she was terrified of being bound, she didn't love Sid but she was possessive of him, she couldn't bare her being replaced in Sid's life. She was warm to those she loved and an ice wall to the rest. She always had a comeback for everything. A war of words with her was impossible to win. All in all, she was perfectly beautiful especially the unbareable chaos of being that marred her young features. It worried Laksh, because she looked, smelt and sounded like power; everything about her promised to corrupt.

All in all, this family was as different from Laksh's as could be, given they're both Indian households. Nobody does pooja here early mornings; instead they wake up to dida playing the piano in her yoga attire. They all dress in high fashion western clothing, rather than Indian, which are saved for special occasions. They all don't sit around the breakfast table and eat, that's a weekend ritual- usually at restaurants; during the week breakfast is to go. But they all do exercise together early morning. Whilst in his home, the women take care of the household chores; the women in this house consider doing household chores when you can afford servants a sign of stupidity and an incredibly indulgent waste of time, cooking on weekends is sufficient to show your family that you care. In his house, drinking is no less than a crime, the Malhotras all drink wine with dinner or whiskey at the end of the night whilst discussing the day. In his family, his father being the eldest man takes the decisions, here, everyone consults Shuchi but have the right to take their own. But Laksh has never felt more comfortable in his own skin, than in this completely new environment. The only unfamiliar piece of the puzzle was Mr Ranveer Raj Malhotra. This was his last business deal before retirement and had taken longer than anticipated, but with only 3 weeks left to the wedding, he would be returning for his daughter's mehendi in a day.

MEHENDI DAY

Growing up in one of the most affluent families in Kolkata, Laksh was not unfamiliar to extravagance, but here in the Shonar Mahal (literally means gold palace) in Windsor, luxury was on a whole different level. It wasn't like it was overly covered in ornate crystals, drapery and lights and floral arrangements. The gold leafed walls of the house that usually looks rustic and austere with the surrounding ivory on a regular day, looked today, like the palace of gold made by the great architect Maya himself. Laksh felt like he was a part of some elaborate movie set. All the guests were impeccably dressed in their designer wear, sipping champagne from expensive cystal flutes. This mehendi was definitely unlike any in his family that's for sure. But it all felt very stiff. He hadn't been this dressed up in sometime and the clothes and all felt slightly suffocating. He was waiting for Sid to come in and even Shona was nowhere to be seen. He was bored making small talk with Shudida's (as he's take to calling her) guests and flirting with Shona's flock of NRI girl friends; all of them, thought him a catch apparently. Little did they know, he was anything but a good catch. A hopefully, soon to be divorcee doesn't really constitute as that. That was another thing, in the entire week, not once had he brought up that he was married. He didn't know why, but something in his gut told him to just stay shut and enjoy the attention he was showered with. It's been so long since he felt...well...Lucky. He didn't even tell Sid and Shona about his socalled marriage. There was too much explanation involved that he didn't feel like giving. His young life got burdened with a lot of shit over a one-year time span. Here, he had a clean slate and he really enjoyed not being an object of pity, or a criminal or a criminal's husband in everyones eyes. But he did miss his family, his mother, his brothers, his dad...Swara. Just before his thoughts could take him to that dark plain, music started playing; Shudida was on the piano singing for the girl who was the center of her world.

Mehendi hain rachne wali haaton mein gehri laali...she really had a beautiful voice. Suddenly, it was disrupted by a group of dholis playing the dhol and another melodious voice singing from behind- gudiya re gudiya tera, gudda pardesiya, Jodi aasmani hogayi shagun pe, dekho shadmani hogayi... as the voice comes closer, Laksh sees a beautiful old woman, in an elegant white and gold salwar suit. She was about dida's age but her features where nowhere nearly as angular as Shudida's. Finally, Sid came in behind her looking like a tried puppy. He immediately moved to the spot next to Laksh who looked at him questioningly.

SM: That would be Shona's dadi. She looks like the loveliest grandmother in the world doesn't she?

L: Haan bilkul.

SM: Bewakoof mat ban mere dost. Shona ki jo drama queen attitude hain na? Inhi se virasat mein mili hain. Shuchi jitni reserved hain, Shalidi utnihi open. Dono ko gussa ek sa aata hain, par expression alag alag. Dono hi muh pe bol deti hain, ek sharp words se bolti hain or duja muh pe chappal laga ke bolti hain. Par Shona k bare mein, jitni dida strict hain, dadi utnihi pampering. Mera toh bhai kismet bohut hi accha hain, ek sar phiri biwi ke saath ek khadoos sasur aur don don pagal dadi aur nani muft. Hahahaha (laughs nervously).

As she stopped singing, she looked challengingly at Shudida who seemed furious at being interrupted. Both continued their singing till it turned into a full on tashan between the two, till they were interrupted by an even louder play by the DJ- Banno tera swagger and down came Shona in all her glory- her yellow suit was simple yet it radiated the surrounding gold, making her look like a golden angel. Laksh stood there with my mouth wide open. Sid put a finger on his jaw and pushed it up.

SM: Dude, my fiance!

Laksh laughed jokingly to cover it up.

L: Haan par aaj toh iske saath pehli dance mera banta hain, aakhir yaha k sabse handsome guy k saath sabse khubsoorat ladki ki first dance banti hain na?

They both stare at each other challengingly before smiling and racing towards Shona. Laksh gets to her first and picks her up and twirls her around. Shona laughs at the boy's antic openly like a child but Shudida and her Dadi look on in surprise and slight disapproval. Sid goes towards them and jokingly elbows Laksh out of the way and picks Shona up and takes her towards the stage to begin the mehendi ceremony. In the meantime, Shudida calls for the party to start and the liquor to get poured, Shalidi adds- no one is to have an empty glass through the night. Everyone sings and dances as the ceremony goes on, after her mehendi is done, Shona joins in. Laksh had never had so much fun in his life. Drinking, dancing and flirting, he could live like this again. Just then, his phone starts to ring bringing him back to reality. He's ignored about 20 missed calls from home; even Ragini had the audacity to actually call. But...it was Swara.

Laksh picks up but doesn't speak.

Sw: Laksh...you picked up. Chalo kam se kam tum ne call toh uthaya, mujhe samajh mein nahi aa raha tha k mujhe phone karni chahiye ya nahi.

L: Mujhe phone karne k liye tumhe itna jhijakne ki zaroorat kabse parne lagi Swara?

Sw: Tabse jabse tumne yeh haq mujhse cheen k mere behen ko dediya. Tabse jabse mere haar baath pe tumhe shakh hone laga. Tabse jabse uss mandap mein tumne mere saare sapno ki aahuti de aye.

L: Toh yeh meri sazaa hain Swara?

Sw: Tumhare hisse ki sazaa toh maine katli Laksh. Phir tumhe kaise sazaa de sakhti hoon?

L: Swara mera woh...

Shona comes around the corner looking for Laksh.

S: Oi Lucky! Tu yaha kya kar raha hain? We're missing you in the party yaar. Come na!

Laksh signals her to give him a minute. Shona observes him carefully as he speaks on the phone. Over the week, she'd seen him come out of a hard shell of gloom and actually have fun. He was still a stoic and reserved angry young most of the time, but she could tell deep inside he, just like other guys, enjoyed the atmostphere, her family's work hard play hard attitude, and all the attention from women that he naturally got as a rich good looking young guy. He smiled and laughed, but those times were rare and mostly around her or Sid. Today he was happy though, but now he wasn't. The look of sheer hopelessness that she'd seen in his eyes when he first came here had returned. She felt something in her stir into wrestlessness. Like she couldn't breathe and she needed whatever was causing him to look like that to go away.

Sw: Laksh please ek baar sabse baat...

S: Lucky! Phone rakh bahar...

L: Main aata hoon Shona.

Sw: Laksh tum mujhe Shona nahi...

L: Tumhe nahi

S: Uffo phone de mujhe!

She steals the phone away from Laksh's hand.

S: Oi! Tum zaroor ex-girlfriend hoyengi, Lucky aaj accha mood mein hain apne current girlfriend ke saath.

L: SHONA! WHAT? NAHI SWARA.

S: Oh Swara naam hain! Dekho Swara, aab Lucky mere saath hain aur humara mood spoil math karo. Bye!

She cut the call and smiled to herself. Finally no one would pain Lucky anymore. She gave herself an internal pat on the back. But when she turned to look at Lucky, she realized he didn't feel the same.

S: Lucky woh...

Laksh holds her by the shoulder and roughly shoves her into the wall and stares into her eyes, his eyes holding madness.

L: WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU ARE? TUMHE PAATA BHI HAIN TUMNE KYA KIYA?

S: Lucky main toh baas...

Just as she was about to explain, she heard her father's voice calling for her. She immediately jerked Laksh off her and ran towards the hall.

S: Daddy!!!

She ran to him with tears in her eyes and embraced him like a child.

RM (Ranveer Malhotra): Oh my most beautiful princess! You look so beautiful! Aab mujhe apni baby ki khubsoorat chehra dekhna hain. Lets see.

He takes her face into his hands and makes her look up.

RM: Princess, yeh ansoo? Kisne rulaya hain aapko?

Laksh slowly walks upto the hall and sees a handsome middle-aged man standing with Shona. His face seemed serene. But his posture told a story of danger. He wasn't someone you mess with, right now he wasn't happy. Laksh stands next to Sid who looked unusually on edge.

L: Kya hua? Yeh kaun hain?

SM: Yeh mere honewale sasur aur tera business investor. Mr Ranveer Malhotra. Hua yeh hain, ki Shona ro rahi hain. Usse pata nahi tha k papa aanewale hain, varna woh kabhi nahi roti. Kyunki jab Shona roti hain toh bhuchal aata hain. Excuse me whilst I try to minimize the situation Laksh.

Laksh gulped down an unknown fear and walked forward towards the father-daughter duo.

RM: Who made you cry Shona? Tum roh...Sid! Sid!

Sid immediately walked upto them.

SM: Sir I don't...I mean...

S: HAHAHAHA! Chal phattu! Daddy yeh toh khushi k ansoo hain. Im usually unemotional I know but im still a girl. I cant believe I haven't seen you for a month and im getting married and...I missed you dada.

RM: I missed you too my golden princess. Sid aaj se humari chutti. Business tera, aur humara sara waqt humari princess ki. Agreed?

SM: Right sir!

Laksh breathed in relief but immediately got angry again that Shona covered for him. Why? He had no clue.

RM: Waise Maheshwaris ka chota beta humare yahan hain na? Uska kya hua?

SM: Woh papa, Laksh hain (he said signaling towards Laksh who walked upto RM)

L: Hello sir. Laksh Maheshwari it's an honor to meet you.

Ranveer eyes him top to bottom, the same way Shudida had looked at him, as if reading him with their internal scanner, seeing into his heart. Finally he smiles.

RM: The pleasure is all mine young man! Now everyone lets party!

They all continue dancing in their merriment, as Laksh slips away to his room.

HI guys! Im back with Chapter 4 of Lucky and Shona's story! I know some of you are added new to the story and maybe have not read the previous parts, Im making a thread on ff corner so will post it there soon and you can have a read. In the meantime, ENJOY!

CHAPTER 4 DHEERE DHEERE SE

SPECIAL GUEST: FUNNY SAM THE DRUG DEALER!

Shona didn't really understand why this was bothering her so much. Laksh had left the party and she didn't understand why his absence was eating at her. She knew it was because of her; she'd hurt him, BUT SHE DIDN'T MEAN TO! And now she couldn't enjoy her own mehendi. Damn it she couldn't even drink her fill! She had to go talk to him. Who was that girl anyways? Probably some ex-girlfriend, the one she wagered had broken Lucky's heart. The reason he was so sad and angry. Most people thought these things skipped Shona's mind but actually she was quite an astute observer. She was just indifferent most of the times. But right now she wasn't. She again didn't understand why she wasn't indifferent, but she wasn't. He'd been so angry when they first met. Over the week he'd relaxed, soothed himself and was beginning to open up a bit. But she could still see the hesitation. Like everytime he was happy or relaxed or enjoying himself a bit, he'd withdraw, like he felt that he shouldn't be happy. He was carrying some untold burden; she could feel it. She knew Sid felt it too, but men functioned differently; they never pried for more than one was willing to give. But this one phone call had ruined his progress. She saw it in his eyes, the hurt and anger returning. Now she knew why, it was that pesky stupid love thing again. It was like a plague. But she'll go cheer him up.

Sid notices Shona standing alone by the bar, that too with an empty glass. He walks over to her.

SM: Babes tu thik toh hain na?

S: Huh? Oh. Ya. Im fine.

SM: Haha. Shona tujhe paata hain, tu iss duniya mein sabse worst liar hain. Kuch toh hain jo tujhe bother kar rahi hain, varna tu party mein khali glass leke khari hain...are you shitting me?

S: Offo! Shut up Sid. Woh actually maine na shayad ek galti kar di.

SM: Tune kuch stupid kar diya aur Laksh party chor ke chala gaya.

He looks at her with his am I right expression that Shona both hated and needed time to time.

She looked at him surprised at how he always knew what was going on in her mind.

SM: Arre aise looks math de jaaneman. Waha Laksh peechle ek do ghante se gayab hain aur tu yaha khari hain looking like you just killed your pet hamster. Its not hard to put one and one together. Aab baata, kya kiya tune?

S: Woh Lucky kisi ladki se phone pe baatein kar raha tha.

SM: Swara se?

S: Haan shayad wohi naam tha, aur maine... (she relates the whole story, leaving the aggression part, she didn't know why though, probably because Sid would murder him in his sleep for that but she strangely enough wasn't mad at him for that) par ek minute, tujhe uska naam kaise paata?

SM (sighs): Ya Lucky ne ek raat kuch zyada hi pee liya tha. Nashe mein sirf Swara mujhe maaf kar do keh raha tha.

S: Toh...

SM: Toh kya?

S: Tune usse kuch poocha nahi?!?

SM: Ahhh. No. Dekh Shona, har kisiki zindagi mein kuch aise naam hain, kuch aise daard hain, joh woh kisise share nahi karna chahta. Kuch aise bojh hain jo insaan ko khud uthana parta hain, jab tak woh khud uss bojh se relief nahi chahta. When he wants to relief himself, he'll be ready to share. As friends we don't need to push him, just be there when he wants to share it. Right?

S: Arre bapre, tu saach mein buddh ka reincarnation hain. Itna philosophy samajh mein nahi aati. Solution dena hain toh de varna main khud solve karne chali.

SM: Maine toh solution hi diya. Par tune aaj tak meri kaunsi baath maani hain jo aaj manegi. And who knows, shayad woh tere saath apna gham share kar le. Go for it.

S: Offo! Tumi eto kotha kyun jalebi ki tarah pechata hain? Shotti Sid. Thoda beshi philosophical tumi. Accha chaal, Will one whisky on the rocks, then im gonna go and unload a person.

She downs her drink and starts to walk towards Laksh's room but stops and glances behind.

S: Waise Siddy...

SM: Yes Shona?

S: You're the most beautiful person I know. No matter what life makes you do, if circumstances were different, if our families weren't what they are, you'd have been some saanth mahatma. But even with it all, Im so very proud to call you my partner. I love you mere yaar.

With that she walks away. Sid watches her go with a sad smile.

SM (quietly whispers to self): I know you love me bas not IN love with me Shona. Kaash...kaash main tere saath apna burden share kar paata. Laksh IS Lucky, but I get to keep you I guess, so I'm luckier. Will my man! One double whisky on the rocks! Stat!

THE BALCONY CONNECTING LAKSH AND SHONA'S ROOM

Shona walked over to the balcony to find Laksh sitting on the floor staring at his phone as if it posed the biggest dilemma in his life. She guessed he was listing the pros and cons of calling her back instead of just waiting for her to call him. Shona calmly walked over to him and sat down on the spot next to him.

S: Lucky agar anjaane mein mujhse galti hogayi toh...im...mujhe...you know what? f**k it! Look, mujhe pata nahi ki woh ladki kaun thi, tera kya lagti hain. Par mujhe itna samajh agaya tha k woh tujhe takleef pohcha rahi thi, aur agar meri ek choti si shararat tujhe takleef se door rakhta hain then im not going to apologise.

L: Tumhe paata hain Shona tumhari problem yahi hain. Tumhe kuch paata ho ya na ho, tum humesha apni maan ki hi karti ho. Kisi aur ki feelings, unki situations, tumhe kisi bhi cheez se koi farq nahi parta.

S: LUCKY AGAR MUJHE FARQ NAHI PARTA TOH MAIN YAHA NAHI HOTI! BAHAR APNI MEHENDI ENJOY KAR RAHI HOTI!

L: ARRE WOW! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR CARING SHONA! YEH ACCHA HAIN. PEHLE KISIKI FEELINGS SE KHELO AUR PHIR USSE SORRY BOLDO BAS! SAATH KHOON MAAF! WAISE BHI TUMHARI JAISI LADKI SE AUR UMEED BHI KYA KI JA SAKHTI HAIN? ARRE JISE APNI ZIDH K AAGE APNA PARIVAR NAHI DIKHTA, USSE UMEED BHI KYA KI JA SAKHTI HAIN. AUR SID, BECHARA, ITNA ACCHA CLEAR MINDED INSAAN SHAYAD HI HOGA, AUR TUMSE PAGALON KI TARAH MOHABBAT KARTA HAIN, ISKE LAYAK TOH TUM HO NAHI, PHIR BHI KARTA HAIN. PAR TUMHE TOH SIRF APNI HASRATON KO PURA KARNE SE MATLAB HAIN. TUM JAISI SELFISH, SHARABI, SPOILT BRAT TOH KISI BHI RISHTE K LAYAK HI NAHI HO! TUMHE NA PYAAR KARNA AATA HAIN, NAHI KISIKE PYAAR KO SAMAJHNA!

As he finished his little tirade, Lucky was now breathing heavily. But as soon as those words left his mouth, Laksh immediately regretted it. He'd just unleasehed all his pent up frustration at everything on Shona. She really hadn't done anything to deserve this. He turned around to see Shona looking at him with so much sadness that, if it was possible, it broke his heart further. Her tearful hurt eyes knocked the air out of him. She turned to make her way away from Laksh but he caught hold of her hand from behind.

L: Shit! Shona im so sorry...I didn't...

S: LEAVE ME LAKSH!

L: Shona yaar please listen, I...

S: I SAID LEAVE ME!

She jerked her hand free and strode off, eyes red with angry tears. Aab toh bhuchal aanehiwala hain, but Laksh HAD to make it upto her, somehow.

NEXT MORNING

Laksh couldn't sleep all night out of sheer anxiety. He wanted to apologise to Shona but he also knew that last night wouldn't have been the best time. If her eyes were anything to go by, he definitely didn't want a full on confrontation. Plus, it seemed like Ranveer sir was fully capable of killing him if he found out what he'd said to Shona last night. But now, he couldn't take it anymore. The hurt in her eyes haunted him all night. He had to speak to her. Just as he got dressed to go out of his room, Sid showed up.

SM: Dude have you seen Shona anywhere?

L: No, I just woke up. Kyun kya baat hain. Aur tu itni subha jag kyun gaya? Kaal raat k party k baad I was sure k tu aur Shona kamse kam 12 baje tak toh soyega. Woh apne kamre mein nahi hain?

SM: No man! Kal raat woh tujhse baat karna chahti thi. Phir kaha gayab hogayi pata nahi. Na ghar mein hain nahi apne kamre mein. Maine socha k shayad brunch karne gayi hogi par 9am toh brunch ka b bhi start nahi hota. Tujhse baat huyi uski?

L: Aaa, nahi toh. Humare beech thoda sa jhagra ho gaya tha. Uske baad se toh nahi mili mujhe.

SM: Ya she told me; she overstepped her boundary man. Im sorry. Ok. Main dekhti hoon, tu ready hoke breakfast pe aaja. Niche dida, Ranveer sir aur dadi wait kar rahe hain.

L: Thik hain main aati hoon.

As soon as Sid leaves Laksh's brain starts going haywire in panic. He tries calling Shona over and over but she doesn't pick up.

L: Shit! Shit! Shit! Shona please phone uthao! Kaha gayi tum?

He prayed to all the Gods he knew that she'd be safe and fine and that this was just some stupid breakfast party or some shit she'd gone to and not real trouble. He would legit not be able to forgive himself if something happened to her. Suddenly, this large mansion seemed like a box to him. One that was choking him and would only stop when Shona returned.

NIGHT 10PM MALHOTRA RESIDENCE

Ranveer sir and dadi had gone to bed. Sid had lied to them that Shona called him thrice and she'd be staying at Susan's tonight. The truth was that neither Sid nor Shudida nor Laksh had been able to track them down. Sid was out looking for her like a crazy person, going to all her friend's and anyone they'd known r hung out with. He'd left Laksh home to take care of Shudida. But dida couldn't sit tight for even a second. She kept on insisting that Ranveer sir should be told the truth, but Sid that strictly forbided us from doing that- if he was told, then London would see chaos till his daughter was found.

Laksh was pacing around in Dida's room when Sid called; Shudida picked up immediately.

Sh: Sid Shonar kono khobor paya kya?

SM: Na Shuchi. Shob jaga dekh liya. Par kono khobor nai. DAMN IT SHUCHI! WHERE COULD SHE BE?!?

Sh: Sid kahi Shona phir se Sam ka bari mein toh nahi...

SM: NAHI SHUCHI! Agar who gayi bhi hogi toh Sam usse andar aane nahi degi. Usse mera warning yaad toh zaroor hoga.

Sh: Sid who toh thik hain. Par tum jaanta hain na Shona ko. Aur woh doctor ne bhi bola tha, aise patients ka kono bhorosha nahi hain. Agar nesha utha toh kuch bhi...

SM: Shuchi Shona aab Sam k waha nahi jayegi. Usne mujhse waada kiya tha Shuchi. Usne mujhse kiya hua waada humesha nibhaya hain.

Sh: Par Sid...

SM: Na Shuchi. Main dhundti hoon. Par agar woh mujhe ek ghante mein nahi mili toh main Sam k waha jaungi, aur agar woh waha mili, toh...

Sh: Shanto raho Sid. Agar tum aisa karoge toh Shona...

SM: Just prarthona karo ki Shona mujhe mil jaaye Shuchi iss ek ghante mein. Varna aaj main kya kar dungi main khud nahi jaanti.

With that, Sid hung up but Shudida's anxiety reached a new peak. She was almost hyperventilating. Laksh quickly reached for some water and tried to calm her down. Once she was a bit stable, she looked up at Laksh.

She was an addict, uski addiction se fight karte huye din raat maine Sid ko dekha hain. Woh Shona se bohut pyaar karta hain, isi liye kabhie jata ta nahi par mujhe daar hain k...

L: Shudida aur kuch kehne ki zaroorat nahi hain. Aap mujhe bas paata dijiye, main Shona Sam k ghar se, Sid k pohuch ne se pehle wapas le aunga.

Laksh takes the address from Shudida and takes off towards Sam's hoping to God that he DOESN'T find Shona there. But his gut was telling him otherwise, his heart on the other hand was constricting his blood flow because he knew that he'd played a part in driving her insecurities further and leading her to Sam's.

AT SHOREDITCH, GROUND FLOOR OUTSIDE SAM (THE DRUG DEALER)'S APARTMENT BUILDING

Laksh asked some people around and found out that the man pacing around the main gate like a maniac was Sam.

L: Sam?

Sam: Ya. Who're you?

L: Nice to meet you. Now...

He immediately went for the junky's collar and slammed him into the nearest wall.

L: Where the hell is Shona?

Sam: I don't know what your talkin about mate. Whose that?

L: Dude right now im fully capable of killing you with my bare f**king hands. Sid sent me here to look for Shona, so a word of advice, STOP TESTING MY BLOODY PATIENCE.

Laksh didn't know what the hell he was bluffing about, but it seemed to work. Sid's name made Sam's face loose color.

Sam: OK. OK. Look man, she just showed up and threatened me to give her some stuff. When I refused, she took a bat and beat the crap out of me and threw me out of my own f**king apartment! If you can, please take her! The woman's a batty lunatic!

Laksh was surprisingly not totally shocked at this story. If he could imagine anyone beating the crap out of a fully-grown man to get what she wanted, it'd be Shona. He was even slightly (albeit begrudgingly, given the situation and what she wanted) impressed.

L: Just shut up and take me to your apartment. (they go up the stairs and to his apartment) You dumb asshole you couldn't inform your super or break in?

Sam: And whose gonna pay for them new lock and key?

Laksh rolls his eyes and literally kicks the lock open and walks inside to find Shona sitting on the living room sofa, holding her face in her hands, with an untouched vial and an unused syringe infront of her. She looks up to see Laksh staring back at her. She looks down.

S: Main nahi kar payi. I promised Sid. I couldn't do it. I spent the whole day, bas yaha baithi rahi. Iss idiot ki ma behen kar dali heroin k liye par drugs le nahi payi. Maine Sid se waada kiya tha.

She starts crying. Laksh walks up to her and picks her up in his arms. She pushes her face onto his shoulder and allows herself to cry.

L: Lets get you home Shona. Sid must be worrying.

As he walks out he looks at Sam.

L: I guess you will be paying for that new lock and key afterwards.

Sam: Hehe. Look mate, she didn't touch dem shit ya? So Sid wont be findin out about this right?

L: Get better locks Sam. If she manages to enter and beat you up next time, Sid will be the least of your worries. Trust me.

With that Laksh leaves Sam's place with Shona. They get to his car and he puts her inside and decides to call Sid and Shudida before driving.

L: Hello Sid. Yaar mujhe Shona mil gayi. Nahi toh, yeh Sam kaun hain? Main Shona ki dost Manisha se baath kar raha tha, she's been texting me lately. Usne baataya ki Shona kaafi dino se kisi guruji k aashram mein ek din bitana chahti thi as some spiritual retreat crap, gurudware k bagal mein. Wahi thi saari din aur waha phones allowed nahi hain toh...Pata nahi tujhe kyun nahi bataya. Shayad kisi bare mein sochna chahti thi so wanted a clear head and alone time? Anyways, shes totally fine. Bas pure din meditate karne k baad shayad thoda hil gayi hain. Waise hum gurudware mein hi hain, tu chahe toh yaha aaja (he knew Sid was nowhere close by so he'd get to the gurudwara, which was 20 minutes away, before him). Ok then I'll just see you at home. Bye.

Then he rang Shudida.

L: Shudida, Shona mil gayi. Haan woh bilkul thik hain, Sam k ghar mein hi thi par...aapki natin bohut zyaada ziddi bhi hain, brave bhi aur apne waade ki pakki bhi. Usne drugs ko haath bhi nahi lagaya. Kehti hain Sid se waada kiya tha. Haan aap chinta maath karo, main usse ghar lata hoon.

As they drive, the first 5 minutes are spent in silence but then Shona decides to talk.

S: Lucky main jab 5 saal kit hi, tab meri ma guzar gayi. Tabse aaj tak maine apne dad k zindagi mein sirf tanhayi mehsoos ki hain. Unke zindagi ki andhere ko maine aur dida ne bohut kareeb se dekha hain. Kehne ko toh woh billionaire hain. Duniya mein aisi koi khushi nahi hain jo woh apne liye nahi la sakhte. Par unhe sirf ek hi khushi chahiye tha, mummy ka saath aur woh unhe kabhi nahi mil sakhti. Mujhe pyaar se daar lagta hain Lucky. Bohut daar lagta hain. Sid mujhe tabse samhal raha hain, jabse humne hosh samhale hain. Mujhse besharth mohabbat karta hain. Par main chah k bhi apna dar peeche nahi chod pa rahi hoon. Your right I am selfish. Par main Sid ko khona nahi chahti, par main usse pyaar nahi kar pa rahi hoon. Maine kabhi bhi kisi bhi cheez k liye koi excuse nahi banayi. Main kuch zyada peeti hoon, drugs leti thi, yeh sab mere apne faisle the and I had fun. Dida ko pareshan kiya, so what? Woh mera haq hain. Par aab, Im not having fun kyunki mujhe aisa lagne laga hain k main Sid se dhoka kar rahi hoon. Jis insan se maine sab kuch share kiya, usse main yeh baata nahi pa rahi hoon. I want to love him so bad Lucky, but im scared.

L: Shona pyaar koi zabardasti nahi hain. Aur jab hoga tab kisi bhi daar k liye jaga hi nahi rahega. Trust me.

S: Swara?

Laksh nods.

L: Aaj bhi mere aatma se judi hain woh. Fiance thi meri. We met...(tells her their story)...par on our wedding day she didn't show up, only a video showed up saying she didn't love me and that shes more interested in drugs than me. Haha! I was LIVID. Baad mein pata chala that her own sister tried to kill her to get to me. Kya kismet hain iss Lucky ki. I couldn't even trust my own love, usse itna bhala bura kaha, itni nafrat di k aab mera pyaar bohut chota lagta hain. And now that I know the truth, its too late. Shes married. Saach toh yeh hain, k maine tujhse kal raat jo bhi kaha, it was more of a self-reflection than a judgement on you. Main tujhe kya criticize karungi Shona, main toh khud itna kamzor hoon k apne pyaar ko protect nahi kar paya. Par tu kamzor nahi hain. Aaj tune sabit kar diya. Aur tu bohut honest hain Shona, khudse bhi aur sabse bhi. Tu kabhi ki bharose ko tutne nahi deti. Wohi waada karti hain jo nibha sakhti hain. You sure of yourself. Wish I could say the same for myself.

S: Don't be so hard on yourself Lucky. Circumstances kuch aise the k you couldn't help it. Tera nafrat bhi toh pyaar hi tha. Aur trust koi ek din ki cheez nahi hain. Sid and I have had 15 years of practice in having each other's back. It takes time. But you love her. Bohut pyaar karti hain tu usse. Jo daard maine tere ankhon mein dekha ki hain, woh kisi kamzor insan ka pyaar nahin hain.

Laksh is in awe of her understanding and they stare into each others eyes for what seems like ages, her deep hazel eyes were addictive. Laksh couldn't look away. They just melted away the constant pain in his heart, even if momentarily. Shona decided to break their gaze.

S: Laksh break mar, we're home.

Laksh smiles at her and nods as he parks the car. Once parked, Shona gets out and lights up, offering one to Laksh. He finishes first and goes to open the main door when Shona holds his hand. He looks back at her. He didn't know what it was, but something had changed between them. Maybe it was the opening up, maybe something else. Shona took his hand in hers, got closer to him and kissed him on the cheeks.

S: You deserve all the happiness in the world Laksh Maheshwari. Don't ever feel otherwise. Please try to let go of your pain, otherwise it'll take you into darkness. Ive been there and its not fun. When you see a beacon of light, just grab it and walk towards your happiness Lucky.

She starts to walk away but this time Laksh stops her from behind and pulls her into a hug that she immediately reciprocates.

BGM (my tribute to ManYa)

Yunhi bewaja, dil mein nahi betabiyan

Yeh ishq hain, sanson mein hain aab jo rava

Aaja parakhle afsana, ban gaya main tera deewana

Dheere dheere se meri zindagi mein ana,

Dheere dheere se mere dil ko churana.

For a bit Shona forgets everything around her, her bad day and all its worries. Laksh for the firsttime notices that she smells of lemon and ginger and he loves it.

CHAPTER 5 MEMORIES- SNIPPETS OF TIME BUILDING YOU AND ME

As they came home, Laksh could tell Shona was nervous. He figured she was nervous about facing Shudida. He put a comforting hand on Shona's back.

L: Shona, relax. Shudida will be angry but she'll be happy to see you alright. She told me to go to Sam's. Heck she will be proud; you faced your addiction and you came out stronger. I am proud of you today. Shudida will be for sure.

Shona smiled at Lucky and shook her head.

S: I am not worried about dida. She doesn't have any expectations from me. Nothing I do could hurt her enough to shock her.

L: Then...Sid?

Shona had a solemn look on her face.

S: Tujhe pata hain Lucky, Sid aur mera rishta yaadon se judein hain. Kuch yaadein acche, toh kuch yaadein bohut bure hain. Par you know what? Not a single bad memory was ever due to Sid. But he was the cause for every single good memory. I didn't want to hurt him. Par bata nahi kyun, when you yelled at me the other day, I just...she looked at Laksh confused, as if she couldn't understand what was happening...main Siddy ko duniya ki saari khushiyan dena chahti hoon. Par main usse wahi nahi de pa rahi hoon jo uske liye sabse zyada important hain. Why cant I love him like he loves me Lucky?

L: Shona pyaar koi zabardasti nahi hain. And you do love him, you just don't understand it yet. Tune usse ki huyi waada nahi toda na?

S: Jhooth. If I loved him, I wouldn't have even gone there.

Laksh puts his hands on her shoulders and turns her towards him.

L: Shona dekh meri taraf. Galti meri thi. Mujhe tujhse woh sab nahi kehna chahiye tha. You didn't deserve it. I am really sorry.

S: Tumne toh saach kaha tha Lucky. Par mujhe itna farq nahi parna chahiye tha.

She looks up into Lucky's eyes.

S: Tumhara har karwa baath mere dil mein kaaton ki tarah chubhti hain. Itna zyada chubhti hain k main Sid ko diya hua wada tak bhool gaya uss dard k age. I've known you for ten days. Aisa kaise ho sakhta hain k tumhare bole hue kuch karwe shabd, Sid k 15 saal ki dosti pe bhari par gaya?

Laksh looked at her, totally dumbfounded by her words. He didn't know what to say. There was something that was captivating about Shona, he'd been making excuses after excuses to himself- her name was Shona, he'd never met another person quite like her, she's hot and he's a young man with eyes, etc etc etc. But the truth was that there was something magnetic between the two of them. When he was with her, it was the only time the pain of loosing Swara didn't completely suffocate him; the idea of having to deal with Ragini and her betrayal didn't make him want to hurl; the weight of his own mistakes and bad luck didn't crush him. She was a like a soothing salve on a searing wound that opened up everytime she was not with him. There was a part of him that was elated that she felt it too. But a much bigger part of him knew- this had to stop, whatever this was. It would burn them, all three of them. He immediately let go of her and faced the other way. He didn't want to think about these...whatever it was. He turned and closed his eyes and forced himself to focus. He needed to sort out Shona right now, not indulge this insanity which was a phase- they were both just looking for something to distract them from their real issues.

L: Shona stop overthinking your actions, tum upset thi, you had a momentary lapse of judgement but you didn't break his trust. Aur Sid koh kuch maloom nahi hain Shona. Tumne kuch bhi nahi kiya, toh khamakha baat ko barhake tension kyun lena? Maine usse kaha k tum Gurudware mein thi.

S: Huh. You don't get it Lucky. Main Sid se jhooth nahi bol sakhti.

L: Uske khushi k liye bhi nahi?

S: Nahi, main jhooth nahi bolti. Kisi k khushi k liye bhi nahi. Sid se toh kabhi nahi. Anyways, main dida se baath kar leti hoon. Goodnight.

Laksh looked at her and nodded. After she left, he made his way to his bedroom to find Sid sitting in the balcony with a half drank bottle of whisky and a photo album.

L: Hey yaar. Whats up? Tu abhi iss waqt jag raha hai? Waiting for Shona?

SM: Ya dude. I was waiting for you guys to come home. In the meantime, I was looking through some pics of Shona and I. I wanted to give her something special for our wedding. So I thought shayad isi se koi clue mil jaye. Waise toh she'd be happy with a large closet full of shoes, par mujhe laga something more permanent and personal than that toh banta hain. Akhir shaadi kar rahe hain.

He laughed softly. There was usually something really comforting about Sid's laugh. He was like the voice of reason that often came too late to Laksh. His easy laugh was a promise of how easy life could be if you'd just learn to take it easy. But Laksh couldn't help but notice the sadness in his laugh today. He felt compelled to say something to comfort his friend.

L: Ya well you guys had a stressful day. All for nothing, stupid girl, gurudware hi jana tha toh baata k jati. Khamakha mere dost koh pareshan kar dia.

Sid looks at Laksh and nods before looking back into the album. Laksh looks down to see, two very beautiful little children; a boy in smart clothes and a little girl in a frilly frock seemingly trying to tear out of it. Laksh secretly couldn't help the little chuckle in his head. It seems that Sid and Shona had barely changed at all since childhood. That made his heart lurch, thinking about how his equation with his brothers, his childhood best friends, had completely changed. The brother he looked upto became a cheater and the brother he loved the most became a hater. Adulthood had made them selfish. He was brought out of his comtemplation when Sid started to talk.

SM: You know, we first met when I was about 7 and she was nearly 5 years old. Our mothers were best friends. Back then Ranveer papa was working in America and they'd just moved back to London to start off his business. They were to stay with us for a week whilst they looked for an appropriate house. I saw her wobbling behind her parents looking adorably out of place in a frilly pink frock, a snotty nosed little brat, but i was mesmerized, couldn't take my eyes off. I was a well-mannered kid who did what was asked of him, took all my lessons, and took all my extra-curriculars seriously, was disciplined. And she, you can guess was the absolute opposite. She loved trouble, bullied me into trouble all the time. One fine day, I got really tired of the bullying. So one day, I decided to stand upto her and say NO! Meri bhi koi izzat thi yaar. It was shameful being bullied by a 5 year old! So when she bullied me, I told her I'd hit her, after all I was bigger than her. She looked me straight in the eye and just laughed. So I kissed her straight on the lips to make her stop. She pushed me off and punched me right in the eye. Hahaha. I had a black eye for an entire week. When the parents asked, I told them she hit me. When they asked her, I became nervous. What if she told them about the kiss? But I looked at her and I knew. I knew she'd tell them the truth. But I also knew she wouldn't rat me out. It was a lesson- don't rat you moron. And I learnt; I learnt her lesson and how to read her as well. All it took was that moment to put us in sync and I have never been wrong since.

He looked at Laksh who seemed entertained and confused.

SM: I see that you already know the lesson by heart yaar Lucky. You don't rat. It's the mark of an honorable man and a good friend. But I know Lucky. Mujhe paata hain ki Shona Sam k ghar hi mili tumhe.

Laksh instantly felt embarrassed for lying to Sid.

L: She didn't take the drugs Sid. Usne tumse wada kiya tha. Usne wada nahi toda.

SM: I know that too. Lucky mujhe iss baat ki chinta nahi hain k usne apna wada toda. Mujhe uss baat ki chinta hain jo usse Sam k paas le gayi. Main kabhi bhi Shona ki dukh ki karan nahi banna chahta yaar. I cant live with that.

L: Sid aisa kuch nahi hain. Par tumhe usse baat karni chahiye.

Sid nodded and went towards Shona's room.

IN SHONA'S ROOM

Sid entered the room to find Shona sitting quietly on her bed looking at the mehendi on her hands. He went and sat on the bed next to her.

SM: Acchi hain. Par itni bhi interesting nahi k tu aise dekhti rahe.

Shona looked up at him and looked back down.

S: Dadi kehte hain k mehendi ka rang jitna gehra hota hain, pati utna hi pyaar karta hain.

SM: Accha? Tu kabse yeh sab manne lagi?

S: I believe it now. Look at how deep the color is, its never been this deep before. I know how much you love me. So it must be true.

She looked at him again, this time she just stared at him for a bit. As if studying his face and then looked back down.

S: Sid I was at...

SM: I know Shona. But I don't care. I don't care about any of it. I know you didn't take anything.

Silent tears stream down Shona's face.

S: Lucky told you?

SM: No. He knows not to rat on you. Hahaha. But ya, I am concerned about why you went.

Shona panicked because she didn't know why she went, why Lucky affected her the way he did. She didn't want to think about it.

SM: Shona kya tu saach muuch yeh shaadi karna chahti hain?

Shona looks at Sid with shocked wide eyes.

S: Sid tu yeh...

SM: Jhalli dekh, mera equation clear hain. I love you. I always have. Mere zindagi mein ladkiyan aayi aur gayi, par mujhe tere age koi aur dikhta hi nahi tha. Aur main janti hoon ki tu mujhse pyaar nahi karti, par maine socha tha k tune iss shaadi k liye han iss liye kiya kyunki meri tarah, tujhe bhi yakeen tha, ki ek din tujhe pyaar zaroor hoga aur tab tak k liye mera pyaar hum dono k liye kafi hain. Par aisa nahi hain Shona. Tu andar hi andar ghut rahi hain. Aur main tere liye ghutan nahi banna chahta. Tujhe darr hain na k main tujhe chor k chala jaunga, toh aisa kabhi nahi hoga. Par mujhe lagta hain, k you should take some more time; we should postpone the wedding, really figure things out.

Without a further word Sid gets up to leave when Shona holds his hand and pulls him on top of her on the bed. She looks him in the eyes and caresses his face with her hands. Sid closes his eyes and indulges in the rare instance of affection she shows him.

S: Siddy, you always know what I need, even before I do. But I can't help it Siddy. I cant live without your love but I cant live with your sadness either. I make you sad Siddy. And I hate myself for it. I love you Siddy, but no matter how much I try, I cant love you the same way you love me.

Sid kisses Shona on the cheeks.

SM: Pyaar koi zabardasti nahi hain Shona.

S: But you deserve SO much better than this Siddy. I can't love you and I can't let you go. I don't want to take more time. I want to marry you, sooner than later. This marriage isn't suffocating me Siddy. Your sadness is. If I were any less selfish, I would let you go. I would let you find love and be loved in return by someone else. But I can't. That suffocates me.

SM: So what should we do?

She wrapped her arms around his neck.

S: Lets get married, in ten days instead of twenty. Then lets move somewhere; away from all the suffocating sorrows and the stifling politeness of London; somewhere adventurous and exciting. And then, lets have a hoard of babies.

SM: Accha? Thik hain, bol kaunsi hyper exciting jage rehna hain tujhe?

S: Siddy mujhe Greece mein rehna hain (she said with slight trepidation, unsure of his answer) Faliro to be specific. In that villa by the sea we used to visit every year. Where your dida would tell us stories of gods.

Sid immediately got off Shona. Damn the minx, all this was only half-truth and half straight up seduction to get her way. He looks down at her still smirking at him, her hesitation completely invisible on her face; she was still keeping up the faade. She always has been great at this game; great at mixing lies with the perfect amount of truth.

SM: Shona tujhe ghumne jaana hain, we can go tomorrow for an entire week, during which I can ensure your safety. But you KNOW that we cant live in Athens. It is not an option. London is safe. Anywhere else is fine- NOT near Athens. I would even consider a townie Greek island, but not Faliro.

S: Safe! Siddy London is FULL of bad decisions and bad memories for me. Our relationship cant grow here! I cant grow past the old me! The society here is SO stuffy and BORING! What kind of a life do you want? You wanna die old and wrinkly in your bed in some bloody town house in the English country?!? Oh god! Come on Siddy! People love you in Faliro!

SM: Love and fear are two entirely different things Shona! I cant live there with you and raise a family with the constant risk looming over your heads! In London we blend into the crowd, it is our city; we can control everything. It is not the same in Athens. The wise fear infamy Shona; only fools revel in it. Don't be a fool. You just want to stir up trouble then revel in a power trip, stop replacing drugs with power for an addiction.

Shona hmphed and turned away from him and shifted onto the bed and laid on her pillow, mad that he saw through her faade, and even more mad that she wouldn't be able to distract herself from confusing thoughts and the real reason why she went to Sam, in the mediterranean jungle of power that was Filaro.

Sid sighed and got into the bed next to her; he wrapped his hands around her and kissed her on the cheeks.

SM: Tu baccho ke bare mein kuch keh rahi thi na?

S: Hmm...

SM: You want a hoard? You sure? Khud ko toh samhala nahi jata, upar se hoard?

S: Kamse kam teen. We were both an only child. Agar hum dono ek saath nahi hotein toh kitne akele hotein na? I don't want that for my kids. Unhe agar koi Sid-Shona nahi mile toh? Unke toh kamse kam do siblings honge each.

SM: Boss logic toh hain.

S: Just imagine Siddy. The beach, the sea, the sun, rocking our babies on the porch swing...in Faliro...

Sid sits up and sighs.

SM: Shona for gods sake. Har baat pe ye zidh aur Shona brand ki emotional seduction zaroori hain kya?

S: Sid please just think about it. Ok? Anyways goodnight. Aab jao, mujhe sona hain.

SM: Seriously? You want me to leave?

S: Toh kya kuch aur expect kar rahe the Siddy? (she moved slowly and deliberately lessening the gap between them) A little excitement? A little heat? Something sexy?

Sid looked at her and gulped before nodding like a played fool.

S: Well aaj raat...tujhe...KUCH NAHI MILNE WALA! Chal phoot yaha se! Idiot.

Sid burst out laughing.

SM: Ya I walked right into that. Goodnight meri jaan.

S: Hmmm...jaate huye darwaza lock math karna. Pata chala phir se uss idiot Lucky koh lagega k main khatre mein hoon aur mera darwaza todh dega.

Sid laughed and left the room as Shona drifted into peaceful slumber. That night, she dreamt of the sea. And the little porch swing on the beach at night. And herself sitting on the swing, rocking her baby, she was humming a lullaby, one her ma used to sing when she was a baby. Suddenly, she felt someones smooth lips on her caressing her cheeks, a pair of lean arms around her shoulders and then a sharp nose nuzzling into her neck, smelling her hair. She felt completely safe and at ease, in peace. But there was something off about it. The arms felt leaner than Sid's, the nose definitely was not Sid's little button nose and his lips did not feel like Sid's either. But it was when he whispered in her ears that she was sure that it was not Sid. She felt so right being with him, she couldn't just walk off, but she didn't have the courage to turn around and face who it was. So she stayed like that, not facing him but not rejecting him either. She had a hunch who it was, and deep inside she knew her hunch was right. But it made no sense. So she would ignore it.

THE NEXT MORNING

Laksh had slept in through breakfast for the first time since he'd been in London. For some reason, yesterday had taken more of a toll on him than it should have. He hoped there was some way he could help Shona and Sid. Well...actually he hoped they'd sorted it out themselves. As he walked into the kitchen, he heard Shona's laughter. He felt relief and happiness wash over him. He hadn't heard her laughing like that for almost 30 hours. It was soothing to hear her again. He smiled to himself and walked into the kitchen to find Shona sitting on the table eating her sandwich and reading a magazine with her feet up on Sid's lap, whilst he was quietly speaking to someone on the phone.

L: Good morning guys.

Sid smiled and nodded in acknowledgement. Shona looked up from her magazine and her eyes slightly lit up.

S: Good morning Lucky.

He took the seat next to Sid.

L: Bohut bhukh lagi hain yaar. Breakfast mein kya bana hain?

S: Nothing you can eat meri jaan. Sab kuch non-veg hain. You woke up after ME today. We assumed tu lunch se pehle nahi uthne wala. Toh abhi k liye juice bread butter nutella jam se kam chala le, lunch bas do ghante mein serve honewala hain. Dida tere liye apni haaton se khana bana rahi hain. (she looks down at her hands) Her way of saying thank you I guess.

Laksh smiles as he spreads the nutella on his bread before looking up at Shona.

L: Thank you for what?

S: Kaal k liye.

L: Kaal maine aisa kya kiya tha?

S: Kaal tune...

Shona looks at his easy attitude and relaxed smile, so very un-Lucky like. She smiles back.

S: And thank you for that. I know that you know that Sid knows, but Daddy and Dadi don't know. And thank you for not snitching; we admire that a lot around here. BUT (she pushes back the hair on his forehead that was irritating him, takes her hands down his neck and onto his shoulders; she looks him straight in the eyes) next time when you pretend to be casual about something, try not to be more casual than you usually are. People can see through the lie.

He smiles at her.

L: Says the girl who doesn't lie.

S: I don't lie but I can definitely catch liars Lucky. I can tell, I can tell that you are hiding something. But I can also tell that whatever it is, you will tell me in due time.

L: That's awefully confident of you. And strangely considerate. Im sure you could easily hire someone to find out whatever it is that I am keeping from you.

S: Yes I could. But wheres the fun in that?

Laksh shakes his head and laughs at her craziness.

L: Ok then. Lets see. By the way, yeh Sid office kyun nahi gaya?

S: Pata nahi. Subha se kisi se phone par baatein kar raha hain. Oh ummm...so theres an announcement. Humari shaadi agle bees dino mein nahi honewala hain.

L: Why? Any troubles?

S: Bohut saare. Par not regarding this. We've decided to prepone our wedding, aaj se dus dino mein, we'll get married.

L: Oh. Hmm.

S: "Oh. Hmm." Yeh kaisa response hain? Tujhe koi problem?

L: Nahi mujhe koi problem nahi hain. Bas meri ek theory hain- jo do log apni shaadi prepone karte hain, unki shaadi nahi hoti.

S: Superstitious garbage or personal experience?

L: Whichever suits you.

S: I guess then we'll just have to wait and see.

Just then Sid walks in.

SM: Ok guys I'm leaving in half hour.

S: OK. For what?

SM: Athens. For seven days. My jet leaves in an hour.

S: Are you serious?

SM: Dead. I'll be back in time for sangeet and my bachelors party. You can do the haldi without me im sure.

L: Yaar Athens mein aisa kya hain k tum apni shaadi chor k ja rahe ho Sid?

SM: My wedding gift to Shona may potentially be in Athens. Usse hi dhoondne ja rahi hoon.

Shona jumped off the table and jumped onto Sid, wrapping her hand and legs around his neck and torso. It was sweet. But it agitated Laksh, he had to fight for control over his stupid brain again.

S: OH MY GOD! YES! YES! YES! OMG I LOVE YOU SO FRIGGIN MUCH SIDDY!

SM: Curb that excitement Shona, I said POTENTIALLY. Going to scope. We'll know for sure once I'm back.

S: Ok Ok. I'm calm. I almost thought last night didn't work on you. Good to know I've still got it in me.

Sid blushed like a new bride. Laksh got even more uncomfortable. More than he's been in a long while.

SM: Lucky Shona is all yours this week. Take care of her whilst I'm gone yaar. Thik?

L: Haan yaar, tu 15 years se kar raha hain, ek hafta toh isse zinda rakh hi lungi I'm sure.

S: Shut up Lucky!

SM: Aur Shona, show Lucky the best time of his life. Taki yeh humein mile bina mahine do mahine bhi na reh sakhe.

S: Haanji papaji. Ekhon jao.

SM: Ok guys. Ami ashchi.

As Shona watched him leave, something felt final about this. She wasn't sure what it was- probably the final time he was leaving without her, or maybe leaving as her friend rather than husband.

L: Oi Shona! Sab thik hain?

S: Haan haan idiot.

Accha thik hain, chal kahin ghumne chalte hain. Laksh held out her hand; she wound her fingers into his and they left to go on their little journey.

Precap:

L: We need to stop doing this Shona. I can't...

S: Lucky I feel...

L: Please kuch maath bolna. Bhagwan ke liye kuch maath bol.

CHAPTER 6

"Who knows? Perhaps your love will make me forget all I wish not to remember"- Alexandre Dumas, The Count of Monte Cristo

DURING AN IMPROMPTU TRIP FROM LONDON TO AMSTERDAM

IN THE HOTEL ROOM

L: Should you really be doing this right now?

S: Doing what?

L: This, what we are doing right now.

S: You mean getting high or laying on the bed next to you staring of at the ceiling? Relax will you! I already ate the damned brownie, its too late to do anything about it. Swore off the hard stuff. Itna toh chalta hain.

Laksh looked at her sceptically.

S: What?!? It was an honest mistake!

L: Ya right! So this wont make you spiral off into further lows?

S: I don't know what lows your talking about. I'm high as a damned kite. Hahahahaha.

L: Funny. Par seriously. Tu kuch aur crave nahi karegi na?

S: Craving ha? Woh toh kabhi jaata hi nahi. I always want more- of everything.

L: Of everything or just chaos.

S: And whats wrong with chaos? It's the law of nature, men made order.

L: But mindless chaos for the sake of chaos?

S: There's no such thing as mindless chaos. Theres chaos and the whole cosmos within it- everything is a creation of chaos- an unstoppable force clashing with an immovable object.

L: Which of the two are you?

Shona turned to face him.

S: I appear to be both. But i'm niether. You just need to know how to face me or move me. I'm empty i have always been, that's why i seek it so fervently. That's what makes me so sad. Just like you.

L: What makes you think i'm empty?

S: I believe you were full of it before- thrill, fun, love, loss, pain- all of it is chaos. And you had it all. But now you don't live anymore. You're too afraid to. So now you're just full of lukewarm sadness.

L: Huh! Luke warm sadness- good one. Shona mere andar jo hain, woh koi lukewarm sadness nahi hain. Its easy to just exist with that. Mere andar jo chal raha hain woh ek aisi aag hain jo sab kuch jala dena chahta hain. Par...

S: Bhar mein jaaye yeh par war yaar. Toh jala dalte hain sab kuch!

L: Kya? Pagal ho gayi hain kya?

Shona sits up on the bed excitedly.

S: No lucky seriously. Chaal ek list banate hain- things we can do to unravel things.

Laksh sits up and takes hold of shona's shoulders.

L: Shona mujhe lagta hain ki tujhe dimagi dowra par raha hain aur teri bakwas ki gari full speed mein chalne lagi hain.

S: Arre! Just trust me laksh. Tere andar jo aag jal raha hain, just let it out. Jaalna hain toh akele kyun jaale? Duniya pe machis chala te hain na?

L: Shona you're letting out a demon.

S: I can handle demons lucky. Trust me. I won't let anything get out of hand.

L: Your deranged shona.

S: Just trust me. Ok?

L: Oh what the hell. Thik hain.

At a random club in the red light district

Shona is pretending to be drunk as hell and she's flirting with a guy whose trying to get it on with her.

Rg (random guy): So baby should we take this somewhere else?

S: Ya su...oh shit! Oh shit!

Rg: What's wrong honey?

S: My ex-boyfriend is here! Shit he's coming right towards us.

Rg: What? Don't worry. I'll handle him.

S: I don't think so dude. He's dangerous as hell. You wouldn't wanna mess with him for little ol me. Trust me.

Laksh angrily walks towards them and pushes the guy off shona.

L: Get the f**k off my girl you asshole.

The guy shoves him back.

Rg: Or what?

L: Look little man, I don't want trouble. Just don't touch my girl. Don't look at her and don't talk to her. Don't breathe near her. Get that?

Rg: Oh yeah tough punk. We'll see about that.

He throws a punch at laksh's face.

L: Hahahahahaha. Now your gonna get it bub.

He throws a punch and then kicks the guy down and proceeds to beat the shit out of the guy.

L: Don't (punch) f**king (punch) touch (punch) my (punch) shona.

Angry tears were streaming down laksh's face and he continued punching the guy till he passes out. Shona who was till then enjoying the show, sees the people at the bar call the police and the guy pass out. This was going too far so she decided to intervene. She went towards Laksh and pulled him off the guy.

S: Lucky! Lucky! Lucky stop! (Laksh continues kicking the guy. She pulls him off the guy finally and takes his face in her hands and turns him towards her and looks him in the eyes) Stop Lucky. Koi nahi chuyega mujhe. Lets go. Please?

She drags him out of the club and into a cab. Lucky is totally stoic, tears still streaming down his face. She takes him out of the cab and takes him to her room and sits him down on her bed. She takes out a first aid kit and cleans up the cut on his lips.

L: Shona...

S: Hmmm?

L: I used to call Swara Shona. I couldn't stand her when we first met. But as I got to know her, I couldn't dislike her, as we got closer I couldn't help loving her. She was everything I ever wanted. She became my heart and soul. And then, I f**ked up. She married my brother, I urged her to actually. But I couldn't stand it Shona. Today when I beat up that guy, it felt so good! The whole time I was imagining my brother. What kind of a monster does that make me Shona? (Laksh was crying uncontrollably at this point and Shona couldn't help but cry with him) I deserved what happened. I never deserved her. I destroyed her, him and myself. But still I can't help blame him somewhere. I feel this overwhelming jealousy...I...

Shona hugged Laksh tightly and he cried on her shoulders. Watching him cry like this, she couldn't bare it. How was Laksh even tolerating it? He loved the girl to madness and she was his brother's wife. She was shocked to say the least and heartbroken for the man in her arms. Shona quietly resolved to lessen his grief if she could and if not, atleast distract him. They didn't say another word and both of them just fell asleep, with lucky in shona's arms.

Next morning

Laksh woke up in shona's bed. He looked around for shona and found her smoking a cigarette on the balcony. She was wearing a white camisole and boxers; she looked like an angel. Laksh laughed at the thought, after the chaos she orchestrated last night. He walked towards her and picked out a cigarette from her packet and lit it up.

L: You know i'm a non-smoker? I rarely ever touched the stuff, or pot for that matter.

S: Ya?

They stared at each other seriously for a bit; they both just cracked up.

S: Have i completely corrupted you yet lucky?

L: I think you can do much worse.

S: How are you feeling now?

L: Like i can breathe a bit easier i think.

S: Good.

L: So this is what you and Sid do for fun?

S: Hahahahahaha! Oi ullu tera dimaag kharab hogaya hain kya? Sid...would never do that. He would 100% talk me out of it, or just watch me from a distance to ensure safety as I play my tricks. He has a rep to keep. He can't be caught in frivolous brawls. Haha.

L: Haan makes sense, main hi bewakoof hoon. Plus, Sid doesn't really have a dark side does he?

S: Everyone has a dark side Lucky. Some are more expressive than others; some are more deadly than others. Last night was a...unique experience...for both of us.

L: you didn't do this with anyone before?

S: None I cared to stop. But for better or worse, I care about you Lucky.

Laksh nodded and they continued smoking in silence. Laksh decided that she was an angel; whatever else she may be for whomever else. She was an angel for him.

AT CHESTERTONS POLO IN THE PARK

L: Shona tujhe nahi lagta k kabhi kabhar tujhe kuch parties mein sober bhi honi chahiye?

S: Haan lucky, mujhe bhi lagta hain k mujhe kuch parties mein sober zaroor honi chahiye. Par yeh un parties me se nahi hain. Yeh ek boring social event hain- jaha, mujhe aane mein koi interest nahi tha. But you woke me up at 9am in the morning, forced me into a dress and made me sit through several polo matches. So pray tell why i should be interested staying sober here?

L: Kyunki Sid plays here and as his future wife its your responsibility to come cheer him on?

S: Bakwas number one. Lucky tere paas aajke liye sirf chaar aur bakwas baki hain before i shoot you.

L: What? Sid would've done the exact same thing. Mera dost nahi hain toh kya hua. I will do it for him.

S: Yeah right! Sid hota toh mere liye koi na koi bahana bana deta.

L: Toh phir woh galat karta. Yeh zaroori nahi hain princess k tujhe woh sab mile jo tujhe chahiye. Kabhie kabhie dusro ki khushi k liye bhi chote mote sacrifices karna parta hain. So shut up, perk up and seem like you are enjoying this.

S: Yuck you sound so responsible. Fine. Waiter!

W: yes maam?

S: One bellini please.

L: I thought we just agreed that you'd be sober.

S: No. We agreed that I would, at times, make small compromises for others, such as attending this dreadfully boring event for daddy, dida and siddy, not that i would make those compromises sober.

L: You realize you gotta b pretty terrible to have me be your voice of reason.

S: You ever think maybe that's why I listen to you? Because you're pretty terrible yourself?

Laksh smiles at her and they walk together to the malhotras box, where shuchi dida and RM are waiting for them.

Sh: Shona moni tumi ekhane...

L: Arre isse chodo na shudida! Mujhe toh pata hi nahi tha, yeh toh shona aaj subha mujhse kehne lagi k aaj tomar jonmodin. Happy birthday shudida! Waise aapko dekhke lagta nahi k aap 65 ho. Aaj bhi full on sexy ha?

Sh: Chup chele! Boka. (she turns to look at shona) Tumko yaad tha shona moni?

S: Dida who actually mujhe toh...

L: Dida shona is throwing a tea party for you after the match at the mandarin. Dekha shaadi ka asar? Thoughtful ban gaya hain tumhari natin.

Sh: Yeh toh humesha se hi thi, baas jatati nahi.

She hugs Shona who just stares at Lucky with her mouth wide open. They take their place next to each other.

S: Thank you.

L: Thank you sid ko bolo. He told me to throw dida a party on behalf of you two.

S: Dida doesn't even expect me to remember. Jab bina expectation k khushi milti hain toh accha lagta hain na?

L: Hmmm...woh toh hain. Aab jake tea arrange kar.

S: I thought you've already done it?

L: Huh? No ways! Phut yaha se! Apna kaam khud kar jake. Yaad bhi main dilau aur arrange bhi main karoo. Madam bas will sit and sip her tea. Waise bhi mujhe yeh sab karna nahi aata.

S: Accha accha main karti hoon, itna footage khane ki zaroorat nahi hain.

Shona looked at him and smiled. Sid always did everything for her. Even made up her excuses. But Lucky...she didn't know why she listened to him- probably because he listened to her. Made her do things instead of doing them for her; strangely enough she kind of liked that.

AT THE ROYAL OPERA HOUSE

L: shona tu mujhe yaha kyun laya hain yaar? I don't particularly want to listen to performance pieces.

S: Tujhe music se allergy hain kya lucky?

L: Yes. That's exactly it.

S: Kyun? Don't tell me! Let me guess. Swara was a musician? Hahahahahahaha.

She turns to look at lucky and his solemn face tells her that her guess was spot on.

S: No! Oh my friggin god! How very predictable! Who are you laksh? This is just ridiculous! So what if swara was a musician? That does not mean that you stop listening to music. Now come on! Music is good for the soul.

L: Can't we start with something light?

S: What does that even mean?

L: Opera thoda zyada nahi hain?

S: Just trust me lucky! Opera is designed for catharsis and this one is my fave.

L: I don't even understand the language.

S: They give you a transcript.

L: I am not a fan of reading.

S: Fine! I'll explain it to you myself.

L: So you're going to read and then tell me whats going on on-stage? Sounds tiresome.

S: No silly. I don't need the transcript. I've studied operas very closely; and i speak Italian.

L: Is there anything i can say that you won't have an answer to?

S: No.

L: Then after you my lady.

They sit down in the balcony. As the opera goes on, shona explains each act to laksh and sings a few of the verses along as well.

S: The beautiful 15 year old cio-cio loves the lieutenant pinkerton, her handsome american prince, so much so that she has forsaken her family's religion and converted to christianity for him. And when her family finds out about it during the wedding, they disown her. But she accepts it all, for the love of her husband. And she declares her infinite love for him and her unending devotion on their wedding night. But she doesn't know- he married her for convenience, for a woman to warm his bread and his bed. He doesn't love her. He will be with her till he can find the perfect American wife for himself.

Laksh stares at her intently as she explains each part. Her compassion and enthusiasm for the story forces him to follow what she follows, see what she sees. Before long, he is so into the opera that he starts reading the transcript when shona goes to the washroom for 2 minutes.

S: She loves him and she loves their son. Loves them more than anything in the world. Even if she can't be with them. She wants her son to have his father and her husband to have his son. She is glad that his wife kate is a good generous woman and that she has accepted her son. But now, she has no place in their lives. Her purpose in this story is complete. So she kisses her child and blindfolds him, she prays to her ancestors for support and forgiveness and finally with her family's ancestral knife, she takes her life. Pinkerton rushes to her, but he's realised a little too late and he mourns bitterly for his lost wife.

And by the end of the third act, he has tears in his eyes and shona is silently bawling, whilst holding each other's hands.

L: You going be ok shona?

S: Ya. Paata nahi aaj iss opera ko dekhke itna rona kyun aaraha hain. Yeh toh pehle bhi dekh chuki hoon. Par aisa toh kabhie mehsoos nahi hua lucky. That was so sad. She...

Laksh wiped her tears and pulled her out of her seat.

L: Ghar chale?

Shona nodded an affirmative.

On the car ride back home

L: You were right; it was cathartic. I'm glad i went.

S: See! You can't just stop yourself from doing things because swara used to do them. Swara was a musician; I am a musician. Are you going to stop hanging out with me then?

L: No. You are right, again. That was silly.

Laksh smiles and they get out of the car, at the front gate of the house.

S: Accha Lucky agar kabhi swara ne tujhe kaha k you can't be my friend anymore, toh kya tu mujhe chor dega?

L: No meri ma. Plus, she would never ask me to.

S: Itna confidence? Wah beta! Par imagine that she says she will come back to you, bas tujhe shona ko chorna hoga, toh bhi nahi?

L: Kyun tujhe dukh hoga agar main usse chun lu?

Laksh teased and laughed. But he stopped when he realized that shona had stopped walking. She just stood there contemplating something. He sighed. She really was a vision in her fancy indigo silk dress, the moonlight reflecting her off her milky white skin. Just perfection.

L: Shona! Kaha kho gayi hain?

S: Lucky, agar Swara k liye tujhe meri dosti todhni pare toh koi gaal nahi ok? Tu khush rehna uske saath.

L: Hahahahahahaha! Shona yeh kya anab shanab bak rahi hain? Swara aisa kyun kahegi?

S: Hmph! Main yaha tere bhalen k liye bol rahi hoon and you don't even care.

L: Oh god! Accha thik hain meri sherni, I am sorry. Waise...even if she asked, I don't think I could.

S: Could what?

L: Teri bure aadato ki aadat par gayi hain. I don't think I could give you up.

Shona looked at him intently, her heart beating like crazy for some reason. She put her hand on her heart.

S: Your actually telling the truth (she whispered to herself in surprise).

L: Kya hua? Tu aise kyun dekh rahi hain?

S: Kyunki mujhe isi baat pe ek bottle kholna hain- I was thinking champagne. Cheers to us never leaving each other.

L: Oh wah rajkumari! Aapko bahano ki zaroorat kabse hone lagi?

S: Hahaha! Lucky you're sooo funny! Ab mujhe uthayega bhi? My heels really hurt! Please?

Laksh looked at her pretty little pink pout and he was a goner. He understood why Sid caved so often. Shona really was a breeze of happiness. Soon, the breeze would pass and his life would be hell again- that pained him accutely. He never wanted to let her go. He sighed and picked her up bridal style and carried her to the bar.

ON SHONA'S HALDI DAY

Laksh had been on skype with Sid and Sanskaar for the past 2 hours.

L: Ok guys, i think we're finally seeing eye to eye?

Sk(sanskaar): Yes i think we are finally set. Good job Lucky. And Sid it's great working with someone as talented as you.

SM: Pleasures all mine Sanskaar! It's good working with you brothers. Your synchronisation shows in your work.

Both sanskaar and laksh laugh awkwardly and thank him.

Sm: Btw Lucky how was amsterdam? I hope Shona didn't get you into trouble?

L: Yaar kya musibat chor k gaya hain...

He retells some of their adventures to Sid. Seeing him talk to animatedly for a change, Sanskaar feels elated. Like his brother is finally back. The brother Sanskaar had murdered with his actions, was finally back. He seemed happy and there was a glint in his eyes, which made Sanskaar wonder...

Sk: lucky yeh Shona kaun hain?

L: woh bhai Shona...

Sm: Meri mangetar hain Sanskaar. Actually woh Ranveer sir ki beti hain- Shonali Malhotra.

Sanskaar doesn't miss the second of slight dissapointment that crosses Lucky's face when Sid says that. He hopes to whatever god will listen that he was just imagining things; that his brother doesn't have to go through yet another heartbreak.

L: Ok guys. I've got to go and stop Shona from getting too trashed before the ceremony.

Sm: Hahahahaha! Best of luck man. Aaj toh katil kar degi. Humare jan pehchan ki saari auratein waha hongi and she just about hates them all.

Sanskaar is surprised at the easy chemistry Laksh and Sid seem to share and can't help the slight bit of jealousy that arouses within him. He wished he didn't destroy his brother and Swara's life. But now swara was his wife and...he didn't know what to do. He loved them both.

Sk: Ok bye guys. Waise Lucky Bari Ma pooch rahi thi, tum phone toh uthate nahi; ghar kab aa rahe ho?

L: i don't know bhai.

Sk: Lucky hum Rag...

L: Its not going to be anytime soon bhai. Atleast 10 days more, I was thinking of even staying here and doing my MBA.

Sk: Lucky you know that's not...you have to deal with things here.

L: Goodbye bhai. Good meeting with you.

Sk: *sigh* ok.

At the hall

Laksh got ready and walked to the hall where shona was sitting for her haldi ceremony. She looked at him and immediately a brilliant smile graced her beautiful face. She signed for a cigarette; she'd asked him to carry her pack around. He nodded in affirmation. She looked around and tried to tell him something but he couldn't understand her. She decided to text him instead. He looked at her text.

S: Arre idiot! Bewakoofon ki tarah ghurna baandh kar! I need a cigarette badly! Sneak me out!

He texted back.

L: With all that haldi on you? Gross!

S: Tere se kuch nahi hoga. Main hi kuch karta hoon.

L: Offo! Thik hain, tu rukh main kuch karta hoon. I swear ek din tu mujhe maar khilayegi.

S: Aab yeh huyi na baath. Waise bhi agar mere liye mar nahi khaoge toh kiske liye khaoge lucky?

He shook his head and she stuck her tongue out at him.

He knew dida was a no go. She would smell something off from a mile. So...he saw dadi. He went up to her and told her that Sid had called and that he wanted to talk to Shona and if she would help him sneak Shona upto her room.

Sdd (shalini dadi): Barkhurdar, maine apne baal jo hain, woh dhoop mein safed nahi ki hain. I know my granddaughter very well, and I know how to catch a lie even better. You can take her wherever, badle mein mujhe Ranveer ki study drawer se ek cigar chahiye.

Laksh was in lala land. Iss ghar mein sab k sab pagal the!

L: Dadi?!?

Sdd: Manzoor? Shona knows where the keys are.

L: Manzoor manzoor!

Sdd: Good! I like you laksh. Meri poti ne finally Sid k baad pehli baar ek accha dost banaya hain.

L: Thank you dadi!

Dadi went and lied to everyone that Sid was on call for Shona.

Whilst he was sneaking Shona into the balcony, they heard a bunch of women talking.

W1: Arre yeh toh drugs leti thi. Agar Sid nahi hota; bechara payar mein andha ho chuka hain. Varna aisi musibath ko apne gale bandhna?

W2: Haan Mrs Ghosh, maine toh apne beti k liye bhi Sid ka rishta socha tha, par oh well. Agar koi apne payer kulhari par marna chahta hain toh hum kya kar sakhte hain. Waise bhi, Ranveer Malhotra ki beti hain. Hum kya kar sakhte hain?

Laksh looked at Shona; she kicked her shoes off and ran into the balcony. He picked the shoes up and followed behind. Shona was standing by the railing and looking out.

L: Shona woh log bas bakwas kar rahe hain...

S: Saach keh rahe hain. I know what I am and what I was. It's ok Lucky.

L: Toh phir upset kyun hona?

S: I'm not upset.

L: Chal jhuti. Agar Sid hota toh unka muh bandh kar deta.

S: Agar Sid yaha hota toh woh yeh sab kehne ki himmat hi nahi karte. Whatever, truth is truth. Sid nahi hota toh shayad koi bhi mujhse, mere liye shaadi nahi karta. Haan, daddy ki properties k liye shaadi karne wale bohut mil jaate. Saach kahu toh main bhi shaadi nahi karti. I have never really needed it. Always thought it a bit archaic. Haha.

L: Your wrong.

S: Hmmm?

L: Sid isnt the only one who would...one would have to be blind to not see your obvious charms.

Shona looked at him in surprise.

S: Lucky?!?

L: Your honest, your talented, smart, protective, sweet when you want to be...hella funny...i know i...

He looked at her. They stared into each other's eyes. The honesty of his eyes was something shona was not quite accustomed to. This was ot the first time she heard someone say all this but lucky...for the first time she knew there was no ulterior motive. Sid never praised her like this, probably because he knew her better and also because he didn't need to- their history was enough proof of his admiration. But it felt really...nice- to be good' for someone she didn't share a lifetime with. Shona felt her heart beating at an unparallel pace. Lucky touched her face and shona closed her eyes. He was carressing her face when suddenly he realised what the hell he was doing and pulled his hand back. Shona opened her eyes and they both averted their gaze.

S: You missed hot. That's usually the first thing guys go for. Was that a proposal Maheshwari?

L: Haha. In your dreams bengalan.

They both laughed awkwardly and threw their cigarettes out.

S: Ok back to the suckfest.

She starts walking towards the staircase.

L: Shona!

S: Ya?

He lifts up his hands holding her shoes.

S: Oh! Thanks.

She tries to put her shoes on but the haldi on her hands made it difficult to not spoil her shoes. Laksh signalled her to stop, got on his knees and put her shoes onto her feet and tied the buckle to fasten them to her beautiful feet. He looked up to see her staring intently at him.

L: Hogaya.

S: Thanks.

She turned to leave but looked back to see him still on his knees.

S: Aab khare ho jao! By the way, we're going to the beach tomorrow for the night.

Laksh nodded and watched her go down.

NEXT MORNING

Lucky had woken up that morning to a depressing reminder on his phone- Shona's happy birthday! He fought with himself for a bit- to do or not to do- that is the question. He didn't know if it would be the right thing to do or the wrong thing to do- when he closed his eyes, he could still see her smile, see her making faces at him, smell her beautiful scent, feel her warmth as she fit perfectly into his arms, feel her frightful grasp on his palms out of the fear of losing him. His heart and memories dictated that it couldn't be wrong- he loves her. How can it be wrong to wish her on her birthday? They'd confessed their love on her birthday. She was half his soul. But the mind said just one thing that seemed to outweigh it all- she is Sanskaar bhai's wife. Somehow his wife didn't ever venture into any equation. He'd cared about her, even wanted her to be his bestfriend. But it would be a lie to say that they ever achieved that. Their friendship was based on a lie and somewhere inside; he'd always felt that. He wished he'd gone with his instinct instead of his head. But...instead of overthinking everything, he decided to just tear a page out of shona's book and went on to make himself a tall stiff drink, not skimping on the liquor. As he sat there drinking at sunrise, he heard shona call him from the back.

S: Arre wah! Aaj mujhse pehle mera shirsha paathshala pohuch gaya?!?

L: Pranam guru ma! Ya i decided to take a chapter out of your great book of wisdom.

S: I guess Peter's driving us then. Mere liye bhi ek bana.

Laksh pours her a drink.

L: We haven't been totally sober in weeks.

S: I didn't have a single drink yesterday.

L: I haven't been sober in weeks.

S: Hum toh maaze k liye peete hain, aap toh peete hain taki bardasht kar sakhe.

L: Wah chandramukhi kya baat hain!

S: Hahaha. Aaj kis gham mein pee raha hain devdas?

L: Aaj...Swara ka birthday hain.

S: Ok stop! Apna phone de!

L: Kyun?

S: Offo! De na!

L: Yeh le.

She looks at something, and then returns the phone to Laksh.

S: Excuse me for a second devdas.

Laksh just rolls his eyes.

Shona returns in a minute whilst talking on the phone.

S: Hello. Hi is this Mrs Swara Maheshwari speaking? Hi maam, we have a call waiting for you, give me a second to connect. (*ting ting* she looks at Laksh and whispers) yeh leh! Usse baat kar.

L: Shona?!? What is...

S: Baat kar idiot!

Sw: Hello?

Laksh doesn't say a word.

Sw: Hello kaun bol raha hain?

Still silence. Shona signals him to talk.

Sw: Laksh?

He gets shocked that swara recognised him.

Sw: Laksh tum hi hon na?

L: Hi swara. Woh main...

Sw: Ek minute! Main abhi ma aur ragini ko bulake lati hoon! Woh

Dono bohut khush honge laksh!

L: Swara i will hang up if you call anyone else!

Sw: Kya? Par kyun? Dekho laksh...

L: Swara happy birthday. Bas yahi kehna tha.

Swara's voice softens a bit and she gets a bit teary.

Sw: Tumhe yaad tha?

L: Iss din ko kaise bhool sakhta hoon. It's seared into my brains.

Swara tries to make light of the situation.

Sw: Accha yaad hain toh London se mere liye gift lana maath bhulna. Waise bhi your coming back in a week na?

L: Patah nahi. Par gift zaroor bhejwa dunga.

He smiles sadly.

Sw: Haan sanskaar keh rahe the k tum mba karna chahte hon london mein? Yeh accha hoga. Tum aur ragini kuch saalon k liye london shift ho jaoge toh accha rahega. Ek dusre ko samajh ne ka mauka milega.

L: Swara aisa kuch nahi honewala.

Sw: Laksh please just give her a chance! Woh badal chuki hain. Aur main gurantee deti hoon, woh tumhare dhang mein khudko rang legi.

L: Mere rang mein? You think that's the problem? Hmmm...main tumhe saach much itna shallow lagta hoon swara?

Sw: Mera woh matlab nahi tha.

Laksh signs Shona (who is happily chugging away her drink), to call him.

S: Luc...I mean Laksh! Jaldi karo! Humein jana hain darling!!!

L: Haan aata hoon! Ok swara I gotta go. Have a great birthday.

Sw: Hello laks...

He hangs up, sighs and looks up at shona who was still calmly slurping on the ice in her drink.

S: Better?

L: No not at all. But definitely can't get any worse.

S: Good. Aab chalein?

L: Ya.

They both pick up their bags and take off to the beach. Shona puts her arms around Lucky's waist and lays her head on his chest.

L: Tujhe nahi jaan na kya chaal raha hain?

S: You love her to madness, you thought she betrayed you and ditched you but she didn't and then she married your brother. If there is anything more then I may need to see a shrink. I get that enough for a drug addiction so please don't tell me more.

L: Hahahahahaha! Ok fine.

S: Lets celebrate this special day ok? Dhamaal karte hain.

L: Hmmm...the darling at the end by the way- genius.

S: Hum toh hain hi- kamaal.

They laugh as they get into the car heading towards their destination.

Precap:

L: We need to stop doing this Shona. I can't...

S: Lucky I feel...

L: Please kuch maath bolna. Bhagwan ke liye kuch maath bol.

I just read your FF through properly without distractions or multitasking ...this is really really good!
Lucky is finally getting a proper chance at life and love. finally getting a chance to grow and mature as himself, out of the shadow of his family and Swara. I like your Shona.
And typical Swara - maan and ragini will be so happy -ffs idiot woman!
