It was a bustling fall day, a perfect day to admire the crispy autumn leaves falling off the trees. It swayed gently in the chilly breeze as the clouds overlapped creating the once blue sky, a shade of gloomy gray. The sun broke out in ruptures in between the clouds as I made my way up the hill. I stopped my feet from moving as I take in the fresh smell of autumn and its beauty.
You know it's great that you love this weather and whatnot but don't you think you can do this later? Like maybe after school or something... when you don't have a test to take the minute you enter school?
The little annoying voice in my head broke my moment of admiration. However, the annoying thing was right, I can do this later. Just then I heard a loud shriek coming from a far distance that didn't seem so far away. I couldn't put a finger on who or what it was, all I knew was it sounded like trouble. And no way in hell am I going to get myself tangled in this. Making up my mind I began to walk as fast as I could.
"CHAMKILI!" a familiar voice stopped my movement once again. Turning back I saw none other than my best friend, Lavanya Kashyap running towards me.
"Hey," I said with a smile as she stopped before me panting.
"DID YOU HEAR THAT SHRIEK?" She said loudly, more like yelled.
I nodded, "Yeah I did, why?"
"WHY? HOW CAN YOU ASK SUCH QUESTIONS WITHOUT GIVING A DAMN?" She yelled once again.
Can you be anymore louder? It's not like my eardrums will tear up.
"GOSH WHY ARE YOU YELLING?" I replied with the same tone.
"BECAUSE YOU'RE ACTING LIKE YOU DON'T CARE!"
"THAT'S BECAUSE I DON'T!"
"THEN WHY WERE YOU ALMOST RUNNING AS IF YOUR LIFE DEPENDED ON IT!" I was taken back as she smirked knowing she had caught me. "C'mon chamkili, I have known you for what? Thirteen years now! You should know that I know you better you than you know yourself," she said with a wide smile.
"Really? You know me better than me?" I raised an eyebrow.
"Yeah it's a scientific fact," she smirked walking past me. I shake my head before catching up to her as we walk together.
I met Lavanya when I was in first grade while being covered in heavy glitter. And ever since then, I became her chamkili and best friend. We even ended up in the same high school, Crest High to be exact. It was a big high school filled with nothing but gossips and rumors. We didn't have any stuck up cheerleaders, or hot jocks who would sweep you off your feet.
But we did have an infamous bad boy. He was always the hot topic in everyone's conversation. Each and every rumor revolved around him and only him. Not that I cared, but I am usually forced to hear about him since he's all my friends and classmates can talk about. It sucked, it really sucked hearing about him everywhere I went. I have never met him personally nor have I seen his face properly.
All I know about him are the rumors and his name - Arnav Singh Raizaada. A fellow Indian. Which again sucked, because you would expect an Indian to be studious like me but he on the other hand has been in juvie. Girls in my class spread so much rumors about him.
"Chamkili?" I felt Lavanya poking my cheeks. I turned towards her with an annoyed glare. "How long are you planning to hold the line?" she whispered. I was confused as to what she was talking about until I looked behind her. There a long line of pissed students waited for me to swipe my I.D. card. I let out a nervous laugh while swiping my I.D. as I leave the scene instantly.
"Ugh that was so embarrassing," I mutter walking up the stairs.
Lavanya chuckled lightly, "It really was. You just stood there staring at the wall as if you it were Channing Tatum."
Oh god no, that's so embarrassing!
"Seriously? I didn't even realize that!" I thought I was still walking.
"Yeah... what were you thinking about anyway?"
"About the math test we are about to take," I lied.
"You really are a nerd," she sighed.
I smirked, "Well I plan on getting into Notre Dame."
"Good luck with that," she said.
I gasped, "WHAT DOES THAT SUPPOSED TO MEAN? ARE YOU TRYING TO SAY I AM NOT SMART ENOUGH?"
Lavanya laughed. "Maybe," she stuck her tongue out before entering the classroom of doom.
We take our assigned seats and begin taking the test. I studied for the test, so it didn't take too long to finish it. The faster I get it done, the more time I have to sleep. I slept peacefully while everyone else in the class struggled to find the X of at least five questions.
Soon enough I heard the bell ring causing my sleep to diminish into thin air. I left the classroom before everyone; I had study hall in other words a free period where I can walk around doing absolutely nothing. The hallway wasn't completely empty, students were still struggling to find their ways to the classrooms.
"Did you hear the shriek earlier?" one girl asked another.
"Yeah I did! Do you think it was because of him?" she replied.
"Well I saw him this morning and he had these bloodshot eyes!"
"No way!"
"Yeah! It had to be because of him"
"I heard he cut someone's hand off this morning!" another girl entered their conversation.
Seriously? The guy maybe an epitome of trouble but I hardly believe he would do something as sick as that. Like these people need to get a life other than spreading stupid rumors, gain some knowledge for instance.
Woah Khushi possessive much?
Shut up stupid voice. I don't even know him.
Yet here you are defending him in your head.
Go away voice. I don't have time for you!
"Kawshe," a familiar annoying voice called out. I dreaded this voice.
It's KHUSHI. KHU-SHI, not KAWSHE.
"NK," I said monotonously.
NK, despite being an Indian can never pronounce my name correctly. Always spoke like he was some English men. Hate to break it to you buddy, but your British accent sucks in a whole different level.
"Did you hear today's rumor about him?"
I sighed nodding my head slowly. "Why?"
"Do you believe them?" he asked totally ignoring my glare.
No, I do not. Now please leave me alone.
"No."
"Why?"
"Just so."
"C'mon there must be a reason!"
"I said no NK. Now leave me alone."
"Nope!" he said popping the p.
This dumb idiot. Take a hint, I don't want to walk to you!
I rolled my eyes while climbing the stairs, ignoring him completely. Just then I felt his hand grip onto my shoulder. It has always pissed me off when someone touched me.
"C'mon Kawshe, don't be such a kid!" he tried to pull me back. The strings of my limit broke almost immediately as my fists tightened. In no time, my fist greets his stupid little face. I smirked, take that you annoying piece of shit.
"OW! WHAT THE HELL!" It was a different voice. Something completely new. It was then I realized... it wasn't NK, it was someone else. Someone I have never seen before. "WHAT THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING?" he snapped covering his face.
Instead of apologizing, I scoffed instead. "What do I think I'm doing?" I said, "What do you think you're doing coming in between when I was about to punch him!" I pointed at NK who looked like he was about to wet his pants.
"You got guts talking back to me like that," he hissed, "do you even know who I am?" He took his hands off his face which was now swelling. His eyes were bloodshot, the kinds you see in a predator before he is about to go for the kill.
"Even if you're the president's son, I wouldn't give a damn," I told him off before turning towards NK. "You. You little piece of shit, next time you want to lay your damn hands on me. Remember this punch, because next time it will be more than just your face" I threaten him.
The other guy stood there with a smirk across his face. "What's your name?" he asked me.
"Why should I tell you?" I snapped.
He turned towards NK, "What's her name?"
"Khushi Kumari Gupta," NK said straightaway.
WHAT THE HELL? NOW THIS IDIOT GETS MY NAME CORRECT? WHAT AN ANNOYING PRICK.
"Well Khushi Kumari Gupta," his smirk grew wider as he took a step towards me. He then leaned next to my ears, his cold breath began to spread across my neck causing my body to react in such way I have never felt before. "Start counting your days," was all he said before leaving the staircase.
I didn't know how to interpret what he said. It was weird, he was weird. But who the hell is he?
"You know him?" I asked NK who was still shaking. He nodded. I rolled my eyes, "Well then are you waiting for an invitation or something? Who is he?" I snapped once again.
I swear this prick keeps getting on my damn nerves.
He dropped down to the stairs, breathing heavily. "A-Arnav Singh... Raizaada..." he muttered.
My eyes grew wide at the sudden revelation as I too, dropped down to the stairs. I couldn't feel my legs anymore. It can't be... that was... him? No, no... can it? My heart began to beat faster, my palms started to sweat. I was scared. I couldn't believe it. It really happened... every second of it. His words now became crystal clear. The once peaceful year I thought of is now in jeopardy and there's nothing I can do about it. I just punched and told off the infamous Arnav Singh Raizaada.
Yup, my "life" is officially done for.
