what i hate the most about indian tv serials is that they show the main female lead quietly enduring an excruciating amount of mental and physical torture from her in-laws and then they justify the mistreatment of the female character by saying that it is for the social cause of creating awareness for domestic violence as it is rife in india. However the truth is that this is just a cover up lie when in actual such domestic violence in serials is introduced as a means to over-glorify the women in the shows and to set them apart from the other characters in the shows as in the standards of indian serials a virtuous indian woman is that who is self-righteous and selfless and endures all means of injustice quietly in the name of family pride, society or even using the excuse of family values (sanskaar); what is so sanskaari about putting up with torture without speaking up?
There are many other ways to sketch out the character of the main leads to make them seem more unique and stand out from the other characters in the show besides showing her as a weak and cowardly woman without a strong bone in her body or a voice!
This is why I liked that show that also aired on star plus surprisingly called sasural genda phool. the female character was suhana; a modern free-thinker raised in a wealthy family by a single father and married into a traditional middle-class family and though suhana's modern thoughts clashed with that of her traditional in-laws they took her words and views on life into consideration and there was shown a mutual and unconditional respect between the female lead and her in-laws. She didn't have to go through all those unnecessary trials and tribulations that indian serials throw on women but rather through marriage she learned things about family life that she never experienced before when she was living with her father such as living with a joint family, motherly love, friendship and other experiences of the real world and she was shown as being childlike and innocent and marriage being a learning experience for her. it was so realistic and a mix of comical and emotional situations. those are the kind of serials we need more of!!!!
