Her body shivered and her teeth started chattering as cold air seeped in through the cracked window.
Her fingers dug deeper, baring her knuckles white.
A voice crept up behind her and seeped through her ear.
Roshni's eyes shot wide open as she felt a presence behind her. Her lips trembling, she gulped. She didn't dare to look over her shoulder, scared of what might may lay behind.
Tap tap
Her eyes shot towards the window pane. She started hyper ventilating as a hand began growing against the wall.
With her heart pounding against her chest, Roshni sat up in her bed and reached out to turn on the lamp. Her trembling hands struggled to pull on the metal beaded chain in one swift move. Swallowing her clenched throat, she grabbed the chain tightly within her palms and pulled on it.
The small lamp illuminated the vast room, contorting the various shadows into different shapes and sizes. The hand on the wall had shrunk in size but the tap tap continued.
Shaking, Roshni turned her attention to the window and saw a tree branch hitting against the pane. She took a deep breath as one of her fears was sated.
With the chain still in her hand, she used that as her way of grounding herself. Taking a deep breath in, she closed her eyes and counted till eleven.
Behind the darkness of her lids, she saw flashes of a deep red that overwhelmed. Her breath got hitched in her throat as she felt the air being cut off from her. A high-pitched scream echoed and swirled around in her mind on a continuous loop.
Roshni fell back onto the bed as the darkness continued to consume her.
She wanted to run away but couldn't as she was being held down by invincible force that refused to let her go. Its hold tightened around her ankles. Her hands dug into the bed sheets as she was left paralyzed. Her heart began pounding rapidly against its rib cage, almost as if it wanted to escape the horror she was about to face.
Roshni's eyes snapped open as she felt that force creep up on her. It had entered the sanctity of her home and had now reached into her bedroom. She knew it wanted to claim her, to make her its own.
All she wanted to do was run away.
The tap tap against the window increased in its numbers as the wind picked up outside. The rain that had come with the storm showered itself and made the whole world wet.
It was trapping her, Roshni thought with rapid breaths. It wanted to trap her here so that there was no escape.
Taking several short, deep breaths, Roshni mustered up her courage and bolted out of her bed. The heavy wind had picked up and shot the same tapping tree branch into the window. Glass shattered behind her, as she ran out the door.
In the darkness, Roshni made her way through the hallway. Tripping over her feet, she fell just as the lights began flickering. Through the veil of her tresses, she saw the shadows begin to glide their way against the walls and make their way towards her.
Sticking close to the ground, Roshni crawled her way to the staircase, thinking that the shadows won't be able to reach her. However, when she saw a shadow grow against the small table against the wall, she panicked. Getting up, she sprinted down the stairs.
Feeling a push behind her back, she tripped over her feet and rolled down the remaining steps.
She groaned as the pain registered itself throughout her body. Feeling a sharp pain shoot through her left leg, she dragged herself away from the steps.
The windows downstairs, which too had opened themselves by the strong gusts outside, made the chiming from the crystal chandelier dim. The ornament began swaying rapidly by the breeze and did not stop until it had unhinged itself from its hook.
Roshni screamed as the chunk of crystal shattered into thousands of pieces before her. She raised her arms in front of her face to prevent any flying bits from going into her eye.
Her fear sending her into overdrive, Roshni got up and ran towards the door. She tugged on the door knob to get it open as the window pushed hard against it from the outside. Using all her force, she managed to pull it open. The open air hit her hard and raised goosebumps against her body.
Stepping outside into the storm, Roshni ran to find shelter.
The small bits of stones and pebbles tore the skin on the soles of her feet. The wind tried to slow her down while the rain attacked her eyesight.
But she still kept going.
She could see her goal merely steps away from her. All she had to do was open the gate and enter the safe arms of the world outside.
However, the moment she approached the iron gates the sight before her wrecked her.
With his arms pierced through the wrought iron arrows, the copper blood flowed down his body and mingled with the muddy water.
With no eyes staring back at her, Roshni screamed.
