Hello friends,
Its Retro Cafe time again !!! This week the theme is :
Evergreen Dance Songs of 3 Legendary Actresses
Music and dance plays a very integral part in Indian Cinema. Having a movie without songs or dance numbers is like a garden without any flowers bloomed. Bollywood has presented us with some extraordinary actresses who are brilliant dancers as well. The mesmerizing performance of the these actresses in some of the remarkable numbers have left an everlasting memory and praise in our hearts and minds for them.
This week's Retro is dedicated to three such legendary actresses , who were not only great actresses but very good dancers as well. These three legendary actresses are :
Waheeda Rehman, Vyjayantimala Bali and Hema Malini.

All three are trained classical dancers. They share another thing in common and that is all three are from South India.
Waheeda Rehman made her debut at the age of 13 in a Telegu film. She is a trained Bharatnatyam dancer. It was in a Telegu movie that Guru Dutt spotted her doing a folk dance, and took her in CID and Pyaasa. Her movie 'Guide', today is the crowning glory of her illustrious career. Her dances as well as her emotive prowess made 'Guide' into one of the best classics of Hindi Cinema. Her role as Rosie, the dancer, is considered as her best role also etting her the Best Actress Award. The song 'Kahin Pe Nigahein Kahin Pe Nishana' from the film CID as she tries to seduce the villain and allow the hero to escape reveals her extraordinary facial mobility and a dancer's grace.
Vyjayntimala Bali is also a trained Bharatnatyam dancer. At the age of 15, she got a break in a Tamil film. The film was a hit and was remade in Hindi as Bahaar (1951). "Watching her dance is like watching a caged bird released for the first time darting about nervously and ecstatic in flight" - this is how the movie critics praised her dancing skills. Her dance performances in 'Man dole mera tan dole' (Naagin), 'Chadh gayo paapi bichhua' (Madhumati), 'Buddha mil gaya' (Sangam) and 'Hothon pe aisi baat' (Jewel Thief) were among some of her classic performances that has etched a place in every movie lovers heart.
Hema Maliniis better known as Bollywood's 'Dream Girl'. She took dancing to a different height, alluring yet exuding freshness and innocence. This trained Bharatanatyam dancer possessed a style and grace in her dance that was transcendent. Although she starred in many movies during the 1970s and 1980s, but is best remembered for her glamour, style, and accomplished classical dancing. Who can forget Basanti of Sholay dancing on Gabber's order on top of glass pieces!
This week with Retro we will take a trip down the memory lane and re-aquaint with all those dance numbers which are still fresh in the minds of the audience. Put on your dancing shoes and join in the fun.
