Siliguri erupts over RJ remark on Nepali
SILIGURI: Darjeeling hills resonating with 'Indian Idol' Prashant Tamang's songs suddenly erupted on Friday as his supporters clashed with the police and locals in Siliguri after an excessively chatty radio jockey with an FM channel in Delhi made derogatory remarks against the Gurkhas.
At least 10 people were injured in the violence including the additional SP of Siliguri, and the police had to fire several rounds to quell the angry mobs. The town resembled a battlefield, with Nepalese and Bengalis attacking each other. Dozens of cycles and rickshaws were damaged. The mob torched one government vehicle and damaged another. Curfew was declared at 4.30 pm and the Army was called in.
A 2,000-strong group of Tamang's fans took out protest rally in the morning and submitted a deputation to the Siliguri SDO on the derogatory remarks made by an RJ on a FM channel in Delhi against Nepalis a day after Tamang was crowned 'Indian Idol'.
On their way back, the protesters reportedly blocked the way of an ambulance entering Siliguri hospital with a patient around 11.30 am. Requests to let the ambulance pass allegedly fell on deaf ears. There was a quarrel and protesters beat up those accompanying the patient, said sources. Bystanders and shopkeepers then sided with those in the ambulance and beat up some of the rallyists. Soon, the situation spiralled out of control. The fans then ransacked shops, damaged rickshaws and cycles and set a car on fire. Police fired six teargas shells and 10 people, including Siliguri ASP Rajesh Yadav and two other policemen, were injured.
"The administration is doing everything to bring back peace. We have asked the Army to conduct a flag march in the area," said B L Meena, divisional commissioner of Jalpaiguri. The administration has sealed all the roads into Siliguri to ensure outsiders aren't able to enter the town.
IGP (law and order), Raj Kanojia, said, "If necessary, the radio jockey, who passed the comment, may be arrested," He said the radio jockey's comments had "hurt the sentiments of the people in the hills".
In Kolkata, CM Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee said the Union home ministry had been asked to crack down on the FM channel that had broadcast the remarks. "I have asked them to get in touch with the Union I&B ministry to see how the FM channel can be condemned," the CM said. IG (law and order) Raj Kanojia said the state government had decided to send a team to Delhi to probe the allegations against the RJ.
