New Delhi: After winning hearts all over the nation, director SS Rajamouli's Baahubali' might become India's official entry to the Academy Awards.

The Academy Awards or Oscars as they are popularly known will be seeing its 88th edition next year. As a part of the Indian film industry's tradition, every regional industry is supposed to nominate one of their best movies. The Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce has announced Baahubali: The Beginning as the official entry from the industry for the Oscar shortlist. The period drama, Baahubali: The Beginning, is the third highest grosser ever in the Indian film industry.

India's official entry for the Oscars will be announced on September 25.

If selected, Baahubali would be the first Telugu movie to represent India in 29 years. The last entrant was Swati Mutyam' in the year 1986. The movie starred actors Kamal Haasan and Raadhika Sarathkumar.

Baahubali' has been ruling the box office for weeks after its release. The movie has minted about Rs 595 crores worldwide since it hit theatres seven weeks ago on 10th July.

I doubt it will win anything. People can say what they want, but they do like Indian poverty tourism. 😆

Oscar panel in Hyderabad for selection

The Indian jury to select India's official entry to the Oscars 2016, helmed by chairperson Amol Palekar, is all set to meet away from Bollywood and Mumbai in Hyderabad to decide on which of our films from 2015 goes to the Oscars .

This is the second year in a row when Hyderabad has been chosen as the venue for the proceedings.

According to sources Hyderabad is likely to remain the hub of Oscar activity on the coming years.

"The jury to select the Indian entry to the Oscars is put under tremendous pressure in Mumbai to select a Bollywood film. This year too there is heavy lobbying in Mumbai for films like Vishal Bhardwaj's Haidar, Anurag Kashyap's Ugly, Raj Kumar Hirani's PK and Omung Kumar's Mary Kom as Indian's Oscar entry. To avoid being 'Bollywoodized' the Oscar committee has moved from Mumbai to Hyderabad, far away from the madding crowd of lobbyists. In Hyderabad they hope to look at films in every Indian language impartially before selecting the film that will represent us at the Oscars this year," says a source close to the Oscar jury.

Besides the distinguished Amol Palekar, other jury members this year include filmmaker Rahul Rawail, writer Abbas Tyrewala and Gujarati actor-politician Naresh Kanodia.

Baahubali is a brilliant film in terms of the visuals and cinematography, but the story wise it has nothing outstanding to offer...Not a good idea to send it to the Oscars...

If there are no BW lobbying and prejudice ,it should be bahubali. Never has Indian film industry seen such hard work and perseverance to present an excellent film.
And its not just a Telugu movie now, bahubali has got immense appreciation in Tamilnadu,Kerala and north India from the audience. It's a national film now.

Exactly what my mother said! I told her I want to watch Baahubali someday because I have heard so much about it and I couldn't in the theatre. She told me not to bother because it's only visual appeal, otherwise a very ordinary movie. Oscars needs a complete package, it would be a bad idea to send this one.

Baahubali is a good movie but nothing exceptional in it except for the visuals. And for the Oscars jury, they would have seen even more spectacular films from Hollywood and other industries, so they will not make it win based on visual appeal.
I think Court may be chosen.
