'...it's an open and shut case Zack, the girl was caught red handed, literally, and she admitted to killing the guy...why would I take on her case as a defence lawyer?' Asad said giving him back the file
'Because I know her' Asad looked at him wide eyed 'you do...how?' 'She is Aaira's friend, I have known this girl for more than 5 years Asad and I am telling you that despite what the evidence suggests even her confession...she is not a murderer, Zoya Farooqui is not a cold blooded killer'
'I return to India after 3 years and you give me this as my first case. You really want me to take this on?' 'Yes, I do. I don't trust anyone else with this case...please Asad for me' 'ok fine I'll do it. But I first need to speak to Aaira to get the background story and then I need to speak to this Zoya Farooqui of yours' 'thanks man I really appreciate it'.
After graduating as a criminal lawyer Asad went to join one of the biggest firms in London. At the age of 27 Asad had become a top lawyer, in all the time he had been practicing Asad never lost a case, cases that no other lawyer would dare to touch he took on as a challenge, and with his hard work and incredible ability he managed to fight every case until the end, until he got the verdict he was looking for.
That night Asad took home her file to read over. Sitting on his recliner he switched on the side lamp 'Ok Miss Zoya Farooqui...let's see who you really are'. Asad opened the first page and started reading the short background to her life.
Zoya Farooqui, a 21 year old young vibrant girl who was born and raised in Mumbai. Losing her parents at a young age she was brought up in a local orphanage. At the age of 16 she was moved to a woman's hostel run by UNICEF. Zoya was a not only full of live but also full of determination, to do well, to succeed, to live and make every dream she dared to dream a reality. As an A* student she was won a full scholarship at the age of 18 and went on to fulfil her dream of becoming a doctor. She was a third year student at the Institute of Medicine and Engineering (IME) who was flourishing in every aspect of her learning.
On the night of 14th April Zoya walked into a police station in Andheri West, she was holding a knife and was covered in blood. She sat down in front of the inspector and spoke one sentence 'I killed him, I killed Jai Singhania...I killed him'.
Jai Singhania was the son of one of the most richest men in all of Mumbai, A budding Engineering student whose life was taken so mercilessly by a young girl who ironically was training to be a doctor, someone who was there to save lives not take them away.
Asad closed the file, there were so many unanswered questions, what made it difficult was Zoya's complete silence. In court she only spoke to confirm her name and then plead guilty of her offence. Zoya had refused any medical intervention or help, since her arrest she had been remanded in custody, sitting in complete silence she awaited trial.
'Zack, I just read through her file...there are so many lose ends, things that don't add up, make sense' 'I know...with the influence that Avinash Singhania has no one will be given a chance to tie up anything, for him its one verdict only, life imprisonment or the death penalty' 'Will Aaira be home tomorrow, can I meet her?' 'She has college...but will be back by the afternoon, I tell you what, come straight her after work, you can stay for dinner and talk to her too'.
Aaira was Zack's younger sister, she met Zoya on her first day at high school and instantly became friends, like Zoya Aaira also wanted to go into medicine so they both enrolled at IME. Aaira was Zoya's best friend, she knew absolutely everything about her, since what had happened she had completely broken down, at first Zack thought Aaira would be the only one to get Zoya to open up and tell her what had happened but Zoya didn't respond to anything, all she did was sit still, almost like a statue, her eyes looked glazed over and there was no emotion in her at all.
Aaira saw Asad sitting with Zack as she walked in 'Bhaijaan' she whispered, Asad stood up seeing and then held his arms out. Aaira ran straight into them 'I can't believe you are really here...Bhaijaan told me you were coming back...how are you?' 'Alhamdulillah, I am well...how is our little doctor' 'not doctor yet...a couple more years to go...Bhaijaan...are you going to help Zoya?' Asad kissed the top of her head 'come sit down...let's see what we can do'.
'You know Bhaijaan, I thought out of all people I would be able to get through to her...but I couldn't, it didn't matter what I would say or do, she just wouldn't talk' 'Aaira, can you tell me as much as you know about Zoya, I have read through the notes but they are just a summarised version, I need to know everything you can, who her friends were, what she did outside of college, what her relationship with Jai Singhania was, everything'.
'Zoya's life was her education, she worked so hard to get that scholarship and when she got into IME it was the biggest thing, I can still remember how she danced around screaming with so much happiness...Bhaijaan Zoya was...no is the most kindest, most lovable fun girl you would ever come to know. She suffered so much, she lived on he own for so long, faced isolation but she never gave up'
Asad who was making notes as Aaira spoke looked up at her 'what turned a happy go lucky girl into a killer...Aaira, Jai Singhania, he was at IME too, was he your friend' 'No, I wouldn't call him a friend, someone I used to say hi to but more than that nothing. Jai Singhania was extremely popular, he had the looks, the charm, the money and more female attention than he could handle...but his attention was on Zoya only' 'he was in a relationship with her' 'far from it, Zoya never gave him the time of day, Zoya's focus and main priority was always her studies, he used to follow her around, try and befriend her but she would always push him away'.
'Do you know what Zoya was doing the night of the murder, where she was...anything?' Aaira shook her head 'I left Zoya in the library at around half five, we had an exam the following day...she wanted to study a little extra...she kept asking me to stay but I had something I needed to do so I told her I would call her later' 'did you call her?' 'Yes I did, around seven; she was just packing up to leave to go back to the hostel'
'According to the police and post-mortem report Jai Singhania's time of death was around half eight, the place of crime was miles away from the library and in the opposite direction of where her hostel is...what was she doing there, how did she get there...and what happened for her to end up with Blood on Her Hands?'
