Chapter 61

After The Storm

The storms may come And limbs may break;
Yet others bend Beneath the weight-
Of heavy rain And windy breeze...
A storm can mark The strongest trees.
Life sometimes deals With us this way;
In unseen trials We meet each day.
It's not how much our bodies break
Or how much they may bend;
It's Our Outlook In Our Own Life
That helps our spirits mend!

~ Strength does not come from winning ~Your struggles develop your strengths. When you go through hardships and decide not to surrender, that is strength ~

Arnold Schwarzenegger

"Please leave him", Kalindi screamed trying to snatch the baby out of Avdhoot's arm, but Avdhoot who had a crazy look in his eyes took a step backwards and squeezed the little Abhi's arm in warning. "No don't do that, please don't hurt him", Kalindi gasped taking a step backwards. Shyam was holding a gun at her head warning her to back off.

Abhi wailed waving his arms and wriggling in Avdhoot's choke hold. Kalindi screamed and at the same time the door burst open to reveal a harassed looking Astha followed by Shlok on her heels. Shocked they both stopped at seeing the scenario of Avdhoot holding a wailing Abhi tightly in his arms and Shyam pointing a gun at a helplessly sobbing Kalindi.

"You b***d, leave my child at once", Shlok growled trying to rush towards Avdhoot, his fists clenched tightly in the air, but was stopped by Shyam in midway, who turned the pistol on him. "You turn coat b****d", he turned towards Shyam with disbelief etched on his face as his most trusted henchman waved the gun at his head, warning him to back off.

"No daddy, leave him be", Astha cried rushing towards her father to snatch the baby out of his arms, who pushed her away with a snarl, making her fall on her haunches at his feet. He looked really insane with his tangled beard and hair and dirty torn clothing. "How could you do this to me, you showed him a way in", Shlok's whole body was trembling with anger and sorrow at his friend and henchman's worst betrayal. "That's because I served you for many years and got nothing in return, but with Avdhoot would give me all", Shyam answered coldly poking the gun at Shlok's temple.

"You fool, he'll kill you once he'll get what he wants", Shlok said harshly, shaking his head in disappointment. "No he won't, he promised and shut your mouth up", Shyam shouted at him, spit flying from his mouth. Him and Avdhoot both were looking like a pair of crazies. Shlok didn't know what to do with Kalindi and Astha sobbing on the floor and him feeling the most helpless person of the world...

"What do you want Avdhoot?", Shlok spread his hands helplessly. "I want my daughter back, and I'll do anything to get her back, even including killing your brat", he bared his teeth, squeezing Abhi's arm painfully. The child gave a squeal and with a tormented cry Astha launched herself at her father. Kicking and punching him like a crazy woman...

Shlok snarled too taking a step towards Avdhoot, but was stopped by Shyam who poked the gun painfully in his ribs. Kalindi was hysterically clinging to her husband's leg, trying to stop him from attempting to take Astha with him. "I'll seriously kill the brat Asthu, if you won't go with him, it won't be difficult for me to get rid of the little brat plus your b****d lover", he spat putting his hand around little Abhi's throat and squeezing a little in warning.

"Don't, "I'll go with you dad, but leave my child alone", she pleaded, feeling deflated all of a sudden, all the fight going out of her suddenly. "No Astha, don't do this", Shlok shouted at her, trying to get past Shyam's gun, but his henchman suddenly put out an arm, holding him back from going towards her.

A gun had materialized in Avdhoot's hand and he was pointing it at baby's temple. "Shlok I have to, otherwise he'll hurt our baby", she sobbed, looking at Shlok with pleading eyes. Her desperate gaze was flitting between Shlok and her father. "No don't he'll still hurt Abhi, even if you'll go with him, don't do that", he said hoarsely, pushing at Shyam's arms. Astha bit her lips and turned to go with Avdhoot who threw Abhi at Kalindi who with a gasp caught him at once in her arms and taking Astha's arm in a bruising hold started to drag her back with him.

"Don't anyone dare try to follow me", he waved the gun madly at them. "You go with me Asthu", he tugged viciously at her hair, as Shlok tried to struggle with Shyam's chokehold on his rib cage. "Kill the b****d ad and his brat", Avdhoot hissed the order at Shyam in a venomous voice as he went past him, dragging a struggling Astha with him.

Kalindi shrieked and Astha bit at her father's arm, succeeding in getting out of his hold. Avdhoot howled with pain and taking benefit from their momentary lapse Shlok threw a punch at Shyam's face, breaking his nose and succeeding in snatching the gun out of his hand.

Shyam yelled, his hand going towards his broken nose, which was spurting blood everywhere. Avdhoot slapped Astha with such force that with a shriek she fell to the ground. "Hold still, or I'll kill her", he spat at Shlok's feet, pointing the pistol at his daughter as Shlok started to rush towards her. Shyam had also gathered himself by then. His one hand was trying to staunch the flow of blood and in his other arm he was holding a wriggling Abhi. He had already knocked Kalindi senseless and snatched him from her arms...

"Now, crawl on your feet you b****d", Avdhoot punched Shlok's face, making him stagger on his feet. But he couldn't punch back as his son and Astha's life was hanging on a dangerous line. Astha who was trying to get on her feet froze in her tracks. Her worried gaze was flitting between Shlok who was nursing a bruised jaw, being punched by her father and Abhi who was straining and crying in Shyam's arms.

"Ha, ha", you thought that I could murder my own daughter", Avdhoot smiled venomously, waving a dramatic hand in the air, his other hand was still pointing the gun at Shlok's chest. "Drop your pistol, otherwise Shyam will kill the brat", he ordered, signaling at Shyam who was holding the baby by his arms.

Astha leapt on her feet with a cry, but Shlok shook his head at her in warning and dropped the pistol which he had snatched from Shyam's hand a moment ago at Avdhoot's feet. "Now kick it away", he bit out the next order and Shlok did as he had said. The pistol skidded on the slippery floor and went out of sight as Shlok kicked it with a sure foot.

"Now get down on your knees and rub your nose at my feet", Avdhoot was getting a kick out of seeing his enemy biting his lips with frustration and looking so helpless infront of him. He felt a delicious feeling of power coursing through his veins. Finally, finally his enemy was at his feet, begging for his mercy for destroying his daughter's life...

"No don't do that Shlok, please dad, don't make him do that, I'll do everything, I'll go with you, I'll even leave my son behind, but please don't hurt them", Astha held at her father's feet, begging hysterically. "Don't princess, don't beg", Shlok gasped. Avdhoot's eyes glowed with a maniacal light and he threw a punch at Shlok's face, splitting his lips. "How dare you called my daughter princess, that title is only reserved for me", he shouted at him as Slok spat blood on the floor, his one hand going towards his bruised jaw to nurse it.

Astha squealed with pain, but seeing Abhi wriggling in Shyam's hold and wailing on top of his voice she held her scream in the check. Shlok had went down on his knees with a demented Avdhoot throwing punch after punch and kick after kick at his defenseless body. Astha drew her knuckles in her mouth, holding back at her choking screams which wanted to get out of her chest. Shlok wasn't even trying to shield himself as he knew that if he tried to get up and stop Avdhoot, Shyam could really hurt his son and Astha.

"Don't dad, don't do this", she grabbed at her father's leg but Avdhoot shook her away like a rabid dog and continued pounding Shlok to pulp. Astha desperately moved her gaze around to find something so that she could stop them and like a miracle she found the pistol lying just a foot away from her, which Shlok had kicked aside inorder to surrender.

Her mouth had gone dry from fear and nervousness and her gaze was darting towards Shyam who was holding Abhi tightly in his arms and was emotionlessly seeing Shlok beaten to death by Avdhoot to the pistol lying nearby. Without a moment's hesitation she leapt across the floor and picked up the pistol in her hand. "Leave him alone dad", she shouted waving the pistol at her father whose fist froze in midair...

Shlok spat blood and broken teeth at the floor, his one eye had completely swollen shut. Shyam took a step back, dangling Abhi in warning. "You'll kill your own father, will you", Avdhoot sneered, his face going red and his neck muscles bulging with anger. "Yes, without hesitation if you won't leave my son and lover alone", she said chillingly. "You won't be able to", he said confidently then added the order for Shyam, "Kill the brat". Shlok roared trying to get up on his feet, but Shyam put his thick ringed fingers around Abhi's throat, in a threatening manner, causing Shlok to fall back defeated on his haunches...

"Die dog", Avdhoot sneered, his fingers tightening his hold on the trigger. In a split second before he fired the gun Astha had only two choices either to fire at her father and risk him firing at Shlok or Abhi or to catch him unaware. She chose the latter one and was across the floor in a split second. Catching hold of her father's legs she tackled him to the ground. Unaware of the attack Avdhoot went down at once like a sack of potatoes, his fingers involuntarily pulling at the trigger in his disconcerted state...

There was a flash of fire followed by the sound of gun from Avdhoot's pistol and Astha felt pain break across her arm. Shlok took that moment to spring across the floor like a demented cheetah and with a roar, knocked the gun out of Avdhoot's hands. It was then that Shlok's men burst inside the corridor, as if they were waiting desperately for some signal. Without hesitation they took the baby out of a totally disoriented Shyam's arms and started pummeling him down...

A demented looking Avdhoot launched himself at Shlok but his attack was cut short by the deafening sound of the gun and he went down like a broken tree trunk, being hit by the bullet from his daughter's gun who had fired while lying on the floor, her shaking fingers still holding the smoking pistol in her hand. A horrified expression on her face and the warm sticky liquid flowing freely from a deep slash at her left arm formed by her father's bullet...

Having fallen to the floor Avdhoot's body was lying on his side just a meter apart from his daughter's. His body was jerking and blood was flowing freely from the gaping hole that her bullet had made on his chest. His quivering wide spread hand tried to found her frail fingers. But however much disoriented she was feeling she drew back her fingers across the floor, now sticky with her own blood that was flowing from the gash across her arm. Her heart felt as if someone had replaced the warm beating chamber with a block of ice...

She felt excruciatingly cold, almost devoid of feelings as the last of her tender feelings turned sour towards the man who had nurtured and cherished her like a beloved plant, let it grow to be a full tree and then had ripped away its roots...

"Astha, Astha... are you alright", someone's hoarse voice was drumming across her ear drums and his shaking hands were trying to bring her out of her reverie. Her eyes were shedding warm liquid across her grimy cheeks. So they were still capable of feeling warmth unlike her frozen heart...

"Astha say something please, talk to me", Shlok was shaking her face, trying to turn her pale, numb face towards him, but there seemed to be no reaction from her whatsoever. Her glittering eyes had gone dull as if somehow some monster had sucked the life out of them. And who better than him to know that who was really responsible for losing their glimmer...

The reason was lying nearby, his body juddering and twitching on the floor, probably in the last throes of approaching death.

She needed to say something, some last words. With those thoughts streaking like lightning across her mind, the powerful need to speak, to form some words in her throat which felt like ashes made her open her mouth.

"I... hate... You... dad", her voice sounded like the gurgling of death. Avdhoot's eyes opened wide in frozen disbelief. "Let these be your last words that you would ever hear", her numb lips formed the last of her words which felt like molten lava being poured into Avdhoot's ears.

With the last of his dying strength he uttered Astha's name and the insane glimmer died down in his eyes and they rolled upwards leaving the sockets agonizingly blank...

His jerking body, stilled, falling back on the floor like a marionette whose strings has been cut...

The vulture who was eating up their hopes and wishes for so long had died at last...

Slain by the tigress at last, who would do anything to save her cub and her mate...

She felt bone tired as if she had conquered Mount Everest, her soul aching and her mind in shambles, the only pure voice echoing inside the empty cavern of her heart was of Shlok asking her to come back. "Just a little sleep...too tired", she murmured and closed her eyes, soon falling back into blackness...

Next Day

She was floating on clouds, looking at the warm world below. "Princess wake up please", a slightly cold hand touched her naked cheek and she shivered with the contrast between the raspy voice and the gentle touch.

"No let me sleep a little please", someone was pleading in a croaky voice it wasn't her was it, but the voice sounded so familiar that her eyes opened up with a snap. It certainly was her...

Her tunnel vision took almost many minutes to transform back to her normal vision that by the time she came back to her senses Shlok had filled up a glass from the jug placed on a nearby table and was now pulling her up on the bed, by placing an arm around her shoulders.

She took a long fill from the glass placed on her dry and chapped lips and the first thing that flashed in her mind was Abhi, her son and so does the horrifying moments of the past hours came floating back to her mind and she sputtered. "Easy princess, it's okay, it's alright", Shlok thumped her back as she coughed and wheezed. "Abhi is fine he is with your mother Kalindi", he removed her curls from her damp temples.

"Mom", she asked him hoarsely. Sighing he settled himself nearby the foot of bed. The mattress compressed from his weight and she tumbled towards him. "She is fine too, don't worry", he caught her in his arms, taking care not to put his hand over her injured arm.

"Hmm, she answered nonchalantly, pressing her face in the warmth of his neck. She felt too bone tired to move and her mind ached as she tried to think. But here in the safe sanctuary of his arms she could pretend that her life wasn't cursed by her father's monstrosity and all was well and normal in her life.

"Avdhoot", Shlok would never know how much effort it had taken her to whisper her father's name from her tongue. She felt dirty by even tonguing his name. But he must have felt her dilemma because his arms tightened around her at once. "Shh, it's gone, he won't touch us again", he placed a soothing hand over her back and the dam broke over her overflowing emotions.

Last image of Avdhoot Kirloskar lying in his own pool of blood flashed across her mind's eye and she let go of the control that she was holding over her heart. Her shoulders had begun to shook and helpless little cries were trying to break free from her lips...

"Let it all go princess, let it go", Shlok's own voice was heavy with unshed tears. "Not without you, never without you", she sobbed clutching at his shoulders with desperate hands. He sank his teeth in his trembling lower lip to hold back the moan in his throat which was maddeningly seeking a way to break free from the walls of his mouth's prison. "Let it go with me, together", she lifted her face from his neck, tracing the path of his split lips, one swollen eye and the wetness lining up his cheeks.

But he withdrew his arms from around her and she felt him closing himself upon her. "You should go see Abhi", he sniffed avoiding the wounded look in her eyes and wiping the wetness from his cheeks with unsteady hands. For the first time after coming back to her senses she noticed the changes in him, the compressed lips, the suffering lines surrounding them, the shadows haunting his eyes and the stubble lining up his hollow cheeks. And If she looked closer just like she was doing now he even had white strands of hair glinting at his temples.

With his hair always groomed and slicked back in a stylish way she had never seen them at all, not even when she had messed them up with her frantically clutching fingers in the heat of sex. But now with his hair sticking up messily in all directions, his one day worth of beard, his shirt tails hanging out of his creased pants, she could feel her heart squeezing at his suffering. Shlok Agnihotri really looked like a man who was going through hell...

She could understand his mental turmoil very well because she was herself suffering the same hell as he was. "Yes, I think I should see him", she said still looking at him with unwavering gaze. He got up on his feet as if he couldn't wait to get away from the stifling emotions that were bombarding him from all sides. He wanted to sink into her arms and cry like a baby, he wanted to hug her tightly and never let go but all in all he wanted to ask for her forgiveness, begging on his knees infront of her. But he couldn't even find in him the courage to ask for her forgiveness...

"Help me will you", Astha spread her arms toward him asking him to help her get on her feet. He hesitated as the woman sitting up on the bed held out his arms, looking trustingly up at him. Her face looked pale and pinched, her eyes looked tired and strained and her body felt so ethereal as if a tiny wisp of air would knock her off her feet and nstead of helping her get up on her feet, he scooped her off the bed and right into his arms as if she weighed like a school girl and unlike a fully grown woman with a child...

Sighing Astha wound her arms tighter around his neck and during the whole journey from her room to Kalindi's she didn't look up from his shoulder, not until they reached her mother's room then and only then she glanced towards her mother who had Abhi tucked into the curve of her arm and was patting him gently on his back. By the look of his pouting baby mouth and his long lashes lying like curtains over his smooth rosy cheeks he was fast sleep...

"Thank the God, he is alright", a sob escaped from her dry lips as Shlok hooked a foot around a nearby chair, dragging it near the bed and placed her quietly in it. Kalindi at once hugged her daughter, tucking the baby between them and with his eyes too burning at seeing the weeping women he silently tiptoed outside leaving them to shed their load over the gory details of the past hours...

Chapter 62

The Unsaid Words

Sometimes
lips are sealed
tongue is tied
sometimes
hands can't reach
the feelings are locked

Into these eyes
read the words unsaid
the feelings not laid
plunge deeply into my heart
every time
love is there
love is there...

~ So i wait for you like a lonely house ~ till you will see me again and live in me ~ till then my windows ache ~

Pablo Neruda

"Here you are", Astha's voice brought him back from the vortex of his past memories. He was standing at the window of his study, his back towards the door and a burning cigarette held between two long fingers. "Smoking again", she coughed, waving a disapproving hand in the air to disperse the fumes filling up the study.

"When did you come", he stubbed out the lit cigarette in the ashtray placed on the window sill and turned to face her with a polite smile on his face. "A little while ago, when you were so much engrossed in your thoughts that you didn't hear me knock three times on the door", she rolled her eyes at him, seething inwardly at his over the top polite tone.

"Oh", he nodded nonchalantly, leaning against the window sill. "Yes oh", she wrapped her arms around her chest, looking at him through defiant eyes. A whole week had passed since that horrendous accident and although it had chucked away the disaster from her life it had also taken something precious from her. The gap between her and Shlok was widening day by day, he was distancing himself mentally from her and on top of that he was now sleeping in the study from a whole week and God knows even if he was sleeping at all or not...

But with the way his health was declining and he was consuming the number of cigarettes and glasses of alcohol everyday he was soon going to be a caricature of his true self. He was spending all his time being shut in the study and whenever he met her in daytime or on the breakfast table his tone was so polite and his actions so gentlemanly and filled with decorum that she would lose her appetite, fuming from inside and wanting to smash the whole tray laden with food over his arrogant skull...

"Who did he think he is? It's not only him that is suffering, I am too suffering along with him", one day Astha had blown up her top, screaming like a banshee infront of a harangued looking Kalindi, who had at once gotten up from her chair to calm her nerves.

"Give him some time dear, maybe he is too hesitating wanting to give you space of your own", like a knowledgeable mother she had tried to sooth Astha but it had the opposite effect of lighting a matchstick to a pile of dry hay. "So you are saying that I am to blame as I am not giving him space and time to recover", she had raged, earning a frown and a disapproving glance from her mother.

"Now you are being childish Asthu, I didn't say anything like that", her mother sounded disgruntled. "Why they are always saying that I am a child, for God's sake I am a grown up woman, with a child of my own", she threw up her hands in the air.

"Then act like your age, I must say I don't blame the poor man for being like that, you'll test the patience of a saint", she had thrown a pitying glance towards the retreating back of Shlok who had come out of his study to see what his princess was throwing a racket at and then had turned at once on his heels with guilt lining up his face and frown lines forming on his forehead...

"Go to him and solve the matters with him", Kalindi said gently. "I am not going this time", she shook her head stubbornly. "God knows what will happen to the both of you", she had sighed getting up on her feet and ignoring the muttering of her daughter following her steps...

The next day Astha had found Shlok on the doorsteps of Kalindi's room asking to see Abhi. It was on pure coincidence that she was sitting in her mother's room breastfeeding Abhi and had hastily tugged back her shirt in place when he had entered in the room behind her mother. She had flushed but after seeing his remotely drawn face it didn't look that he had noticed anything at all or maybe he was trying too hard to ignore, as her close scrutiny of his pale features had found out his jawbone protruding through his skin and a tightly clenched fist trembling at his side...

"Asthu can you leave him with Abhi for a moment, he needs to see his son", Kailindi's gaze had flitted pleadingly between both of them, as if begging them not to create a scene. But Astha's furious gaze had been only fixed on Shlok's downcast eyes and the purplish bruises marring his face, courtesy of her father.

He wasn't even finding inside him to meet her gaze on level, the coward, she had mentally seethed at him. "He could have asked that from me, why did he need to ask that from you, I wouldn't bite him now would I Shlok", the last question she had asked directly from him stretching her lips in a parody of a smile.

"Astha", Kalindi had gasped at her daughter's outrageousness. "What sort of manner is like that, he only wants to see his son and don't forget Abhi sleeps with me so what if he asked me directly to see him", Kalindi had explained, her nostrils flaring at seeing the sour look at her daughter's face. Astha had opened her mouth to say that she was sorry but his polite words "leave it mother" to Kalindi had caused her to shut it back.

A wave of pure rage and jealousy had shot through her heart, when did he start calling her mother and acting all gentlemanly when he was avoiding her on all costs as if she was carrying plague on her, she had thought to herself simmering inside...

"Wohoo, see to it you calling my mother as "mother", am I listening alright, are my ears playing on me", she had slapped both of her hands dramatically on her cheeks seeing with satisfaction, his face paling to the color of wheat. "Now Astha that's enough, he is only asking to see his son, what's wrong in it, don't create a hash out of it", her mother had snapped atlast on the end of her tether...

"Why don't you ask him what's wrong with me, why you are taking his side, being my mother", she shrieked jostling Abhi on her lap who started to cry at once. "Stop it Abhi", she had smacked him on the back losing all patience, she was exhausted, tired mentally and physically and no one was trying to understand her and now her mother was on Shlok's side too who was breaking all records on giving her silent treatment.

Abhi had started bawling at the top of his voice causing Shlok to step towards her but was stopped by Kalindi who held a hand to him nodding at him in a I-will-take-care-of-that manner. "Astha, don't do that", giving her such a stern look that would have curdled milk, Kalindi had snatched Abhi into her arms and had swayed him side by side to calm him down...

"I've had enough mom why are you blaming me, why don't you ask your newly acquired son that what on earth had happened that he is giving me silent treatment?", Astha had gotten up on her feet, murderous rage had been lighting up her eyes.

"Don't talk to your mother like that", Shlok had spoken up grimly at her mother's side, till now he had been a silent spectator listening to the heated convo between mother and daughter with unease. He had been guilty of starting that argument and had been mentally berating himself for coming here in the first place.

After all it was because of him that his little princess was acting the part of a heathen now, talking to her mother like that whose only sin was to show sincerity on his behalf. He had gotten quite close to her in mere days finding a gentle and pure soul full of maternal love in her petite frame. Hesitatingly he had asked her permission to call her mother and smilingly she had given it to him, soothing the burning oasis of his heart with the gentle caress of her hand on his heart...

"She is my mother, mine, not yours", she had shrieked at him, jealous rage had been sparking in her eyes, causing him to step back in shock. "Astha, girl, you are misunderstanding he only asked permission for your hand from me, so that makes me his mother-in-law, right now be a good girl and let him hold Abhi for once", Kalindi had smoothed her free hand on her daughters tensed back while with her other hand she was trying ineffectively trying to sooth Abhi who had stopped crying and was now hiccupping into her grandma's shoulder.

That had been quite a wrong thing to confess to her daughter at that time as Kalindi had found out afterwards...

"No", there was an ominous finality in Astha's tone which had caused Kalindi to look at her with a frown on her face but with a sinking feeling taking root inside his heart Shlok had known in that instant that what her next words were going to be. "I won't give Abhi to him and I won't marry him, until he tells me what is the matter with him", she had bit out through clenched teeth, as tears had started to form in her eyes.

"Ask him why he is giving me silent treatment while just a week ago he was treating me like the wh**e of Babylon, where was his gentlemanly and over the top polite behavior was, I am sick of it, do you hear me...sick...sick...sick", she had shouted hysterically waving an accusing hand at him.

Shlok had flinched and his face had leached of all color while Kalindi's hand had shot out but was caught by Shlok in mid air before it could have connected with her daughter's face. "Don't", he had pleaded and seeing the leave-it-to-me look in his eyes Kalindi had sighed, nodding at him silently and then leaving them both to their own devices she had taken Abhi with her to another room...

Astha had been too shocked at seeing her mother lift her hand in anger and that too because of someone else. "You must be laughing inside at seeing me like this and with my mother backing you up now", she had thrown him an accusing glance from behind the sheeting of tears that were not stopping at any time. "No princess, it's just your thought", he had sighed pinching the bridge of his nose. "Thought", she had snorted. "Then tell me why are you treating me like this, this shitty politeness is rasping across my nerves", she had asked caustically.

"I am giving you your space princess, nothing else", he had spread his hands beseechingly. "Hah, space whose talking", she had rolled her eyes mockingly. He had flushed angrily at her tone, as his tightly leashed control on his own temper was losing too. "Yes space either you believe or you don't believe princess, it's upto you", he had snapped.

At his exasperated tone she had grown silent at and instead of retorting back had started scrutinizing him from beneath her lashes. He felt uncomfortable and to his shame his ears had started to burn red like a school boy caught under the glare of a school marm's unnerving gaze.

"You haven't grown bored with me are you", she had asked atlast, her gaze had been unwavering on his face. "What...No", he had frowned. "Really', she had arched one disbelieving eyebrow. "Yes what had really happened to you princess, you were never that annoying before", he had said infuriatingly. "And you were never that silent before and ignorant of me", she was irked too at his flinty behavior. "Don't you get it princess, you are still not understanding the seriousness of the situation", losing all patience with her he dragged her body towards him...

"What kind of woman are you? One week ago we could have almost lost our son, I could have lost you, I thought of giving you space so you could think and rationalize, think about our son, think of our future but no like the spitfire you are you only thought that I was ignoring you", he had shaken her harder trying to knock some sense into her head...

"I even asked for your hand in marriage from your mother, because I wanted to do everything properly this time but I didn't want to break that news to you so early because I wanted to give you time to think and recover", his hold had tightened unconsciously on her injured arm, his voice had been filled with desperation at that time. She had winced as a wave of pain had torn across her injured arm, it hadn't been fully healed then...

He had left her at once backing away with a muttered sorry and that had infuriated her more. Nowadays everything about him was irritating him to the core his polite mannerisms, his gentlemanly tone. "In the first place you never asked me what I wanted, you just decided it yourself that I wanted space for myself, did I asked for that no I didn't and I am not like you trying to live in the past and reminiscing my wounds", she had said heatedly.

He had blanched at her taunting remarks. These days she had been drilling a hole in his heart with her sarcastic remarks and it was all because of him, he had thought guiltily. "And don't try to act as if the decorum ends on you", she had added with a snarl.

"To hell with the decorum, if you are happy with my manhandling than I can very well provide it to you princess but I am leaving you to sit and think well on what could have happened a week ago to you an Abhi", his gaze had grown flinty at her last remark and a pulse was throbbing at his temple indicating his control on his temper. To hell with his guilt, he had thought.

Outraged at his accusation of being a careless mother she tried to open her mouth to retort but his next words shut her up. "And If you love your child than you should first clean your mind of the rubbish that it is filled with and then ponder over my words, seriously like a woman and not like a child", with his parting shot ringing in his ears he had turned on his heels and had went swooshing past her like a simmering volcano...

"Don't start blaming me for everything", she had raged at his retreating back. "And quit unloading your self-guilt over me", the last remark had stopped him in his tracks but after a moment's hesitation he had went outside without turning his back towards her. "Bulls eye", she had muttered under her breath...

She had found out atlast what was troubling him, she had thought and a satisfied smile had lit up her face...

And now almost a week later she was here in his study which looked more like a third grade bar with the study desk littered with wine bottles, some empty and some quarter filled and the cigarette butts lining the carpet. She wrinkled her nose at the smell of alcohol and smoke that was pervading the whole study. So his plan was to drown his sorrows in smoke, let the alcohol eat at his liver while his elf-guilt ate at his heart.

All the week she had rehearsed many speeches and had gathered her courage to speak to him. After the last heated argument he had drawn more inside his shell, leaving her no option but to seek him inside his study which was acting as his sanctuary nowadays. She had knocked thrice on the door but when no one had responded she had opened the half-closed door herself and had found him standing at the window too engrossed in his thoughts to notice someone breaching the boundaries of his self-made prison...

And now as she had saved him yet again from scorching his fingers from the burning cigarette he had the gal to turn and face her with the same remotely cold expression on his face which she was finding to her irritation was quite becoming a habit of his whenever he wanted to mentally distance himself away from her. But not again, not this time, she won't let him succeed...
