Chapter 55 They both had a moment of calmness and peace with each other after their chaotic and tiring morning. He forgot about his worries about her and Ruhi as well as the headache he had been carrying around quietly since yesterday as his head rested on hers with her hand in his. She was no different, this was the one morning she wished she wouldn't be feeling unwell and wouldn't have to be so nervous about a plane ride, but she seems to be sleeping unaware of her surroundings on her husband's shoulder as she held his hand.
Mihika smiled as she thought about everything seemed so right as they were together. She knew they were both hurt people and needed that very shoulder they both rested on right now. She had doubted him so much while he had been a pillar for her and Mihir had doubted her when she stood by his side ever since she entered his life. These two were willingly to argue and fight with those so close to them for each other. And now she even saw how comfortable and happy they were being near each other...if this wasn't love, what was it?
She turned back in her seat thinking about the couple behind and found Ruhi looking at her with wide open eyes. She knew she was in for some tantrums to deal with, but this was the one time she hoped Ruhi would stay quiet as her parents were getting their much needed rest. She smiled at Ruhi and made her sit in her lap cooing at the child. As Ruhi frowned and look ready to cry, she begged the small child...
"Ruhi, my sweet baby not right now. Mumma, Papa are sleeping right now. We don't want to wake them up no do we? So you be a good girl and play with your toys. I even bought you a new teddy." She pulled out a tiny fluffy stuffed bear out of her purse and handed it to Ruhi who seemed more than happy to get a toy and was willingly to listen to her Chitti for once. So Mihika sighed in relief looking back at the couple resting while she gave a hug to Ruhi and sat back relaxing on the flight...
~~~~~
He sleepily opened his when he heard someone calling out to him and looked up to find Mihika looking apologetically at him. He looked at her confused and with half opened eyes.
"I'm so sorry Jiju...I need to use the bathroom and Ruhi..."
He rubbed his eyes with his free hand from taking his hand of her and asked Mihika to carefully place Ruhi in his arm without disturbing Ishita. As Mihika walked away to use the bathroom, he tapped his foot rocking Ruhi as he held her protectively in one arm while the other couldn't move as it would wake Ishita. He smiled at his daughter who was more than happy to find her father's arms again and cuddled onto him. His eyes started to get droopy again as he slept late after his talk with Ishita last night and was up early trying to give Ishita her sleep.
He started to lean on her head again when he saw his daughter laughing away. He remembered how much she had cried for him and Ishita just yesterday and couldn't let it happen again. He tried to stay awake until Mihika came back while Ruhi happily played on his lap. He smiled seeing her play with a small toy. Even in his half asleep state, he knew he probably never bought Ruhi that toy and asked her who gave it to her. The confused child who didn't know what to say or understood him looked at him curiously as she continued to play while he found himself thinking he is stupid for asking her that. Luckily Mihika came back by then and took Ruhi while he asked about the toy and was assured it was okay for Ruhi as she brought it. She took Ruhi back to her seat while Raman dozed off on Ishita's shoulder again...
~~~~~
She woke up with a jerk as the plane landed onto the grounds of the airport. Clutching his hand startled by the sudden noise and landing, she looked over and found him asleep peacefully. She was delighted to see him sleeping next to her as she missed his sight in the morning when she woke up, but got it. She smiled seeing him sleep on her shoulder like a small child with a cute pout on his face. In a trance, she ran her hand threw his hair and kissed his head gently. She stroked his face while a smile lingered on her face. But her happiness was short lived as Mihika got up and came to her...
"Akka...wake Jiju up, he'll pull down the bags, we need to go."
She looked over at Raman fast asleep on her shoulder now and didn't want to wake him up anymore. The man who usually woke up by his daughter's whimpers didn't wake up during the loud landing of the plane. He was visibly so tired and didn't get enough sleep at all. She felt horrible for making him run around doing everything while she only watched him. And now when he finally got some shut eye, how could she wake him up when he did everything he could not to bother her? Unwillingly, she took his hand into hers and stroked it gently calling his name.
"Raman...wake up, we're here."
He crinkled his eyebrows a bit and stirred, but he didn't open his eyes and snuggled closer in the crook of her neck. She felt her heart sink as he had a faint smile in his sleep and it would fade the second he woke up, but then she looked at Mihika who was waiting and how they were one of the few left on the plane. She shook him gently and whispered to him...
"Raman...sleep at home, wake up for now."
He opened his eyes looking at her trying to in what was going on while she smiled sadly asking him to get up as they had landed. He took a moment to sit up properly and wake up fully before he turned to her and gave her a tired smile. As he flashed a smile, she couldn't believe how easily he was doing all this not once showing or uttering a word about his tiredness instead thanked her for waking him up. She got up looking taking Ruhi in her arms, but he held her shoulders knowing she would be dizzy after standing up suddenly. And she surely was. He asked Mihika to take Ruhi while he asked Ishita to sit back down after he got out onto the aisle and started to take out their things.
Is this what a family man was? Mihika told her as they walked all about how Raman didn't let anyone wake her up. He had woken up by her when she needed him to hold Ruhi and by an air hostess, but neither time did he let her be woken and he even stayed up when Ruhi needed him when he visibly wanted to sleep. He quietly did all this for them and didn't say a words about that back pain she knew he had, that headache that probably bothered him since last night, and never did he tried to make up his lack of sleep by compromising with her or Ruhi. She held his hand as tightly as she could as if it would keep him with her forever while he looked confused, but didn't mind it either.
They walked out of the plane as he didn't let her carrying anything and asked her to hold his hand the whole time and she with a smile did as he said...
~~~~~
They knocked on the door of the house and were happily greeted by his mother. She asked the help to quickly take in their things while she gave Raman a tight hug telling him how much she missed him and took Ruhi into her arms and gave Ishita a hug asking her if everything was well. Once Ishita told her everything had gone fine thanks to Raman who was smiling throughout, she welcomed them in.
They walked in followed by Mihika to find her mother and father sitting on the couch. While they were walking in, both mothers noticed how they had held their hand together and were smiling widely despite tired looks on their faces. Her mother ran over to her engulfing her into a hug while both couldn't help shed a few tears as this was the first time they saw each other after their marriage. Raman went and shook hands with his father-in-law who asked if all was well with his work and the men sat down to talk as the women controlled their emotions and seemed normal as they sat down with their husbands.
Again the mothers noticed Raman holding her and asking her if she was okay as he wiped the corner of her eyes when he thought no one was looking. Both mothers smiled contently at their children with their hearts fluttering with a ray of hope they got from their small observations.
They continued to notice the two for the next hour. They watched Raman's face when she ran to the bathroom and he rushed behind her without a thought. Mrs. Bhalla asked Mrs. Iyer to see what happened and what a mother saw was enough to bring tears to her eyes. She remembered how she was worried about handling her emotions when Ishita would need her support during her pregnancy and what they would go through, but she smiled through her tears as she saw Raman hold her shoulder through her sickness, helping her clean up and hug her as she cried and apologized for bothering him. She watched her daughter smile in his arms after he caressed her stomach and Mrs. Iyer left from there knowing that his actions proved he meant his promises of taking care of her and her baby.
His mother noticed how he started to talk more with his in-laws , joked around with his sister-in-law and started to talk more in general even with her. He was somewhat acting like the old friendly, ever talkative Raman she knew. She wanted to hide her tears and slowly turned to the kitchen where she saw Ishita. Going to ask her to sit and rest, she stopped behind her as she told the maid she would be the one making tea for Raman. She wanted to stop her from straining herself, but then her next words touch the heart of the mother in her...
"I'll make tea for Raman and I should add ginger to it as well. He won't say it or ask for it, but it'll help with his headache. He never complains, but thinks I don't see his pain. I see it and I'll get rid of it."
Se slowly walked back to living room for once letting Ishita work since today she knew how right he was in marrying her. Maybe if there was any other woman in the same situation as her would have never taken care of her son or had been able to recognize even the smallest pain he hid in himself so deeply and covered with a smile. She not only recognized that, but even went ahead to put him first and try to get rid of his smallest problems.
Mrs. Bhalla and Mrs. Iyer were in deep thoughts. They watched their children silently as Mihika asked them to rest as Ruhi would be watched by 3 grandparents and her Chitti now. Though they acted as parents and tried to protest, at the end they listened to their family. The mothers silently watched as Ishita handed him his tea mug and he took it with a smile, but asked her to take care of herself more than anything. She looked happy as he complimented her tea while they both walked to their room hand-in-hand...
Something had changed a lot...changed for the better. Maybe what they had hope for and thought was impossible was happening. Were their children about to get what they never got before...love? They both thought they had love in their lives from their partners, but there wasn't. And even if there was, that acknowledged love was nothing compared to this unknown love they had between each other. Both mothers found themselves praying to two different Gods, but asking for one same wish to be fulfilled...
