Chapter 56 They walked into their room as he shut the door behind them. He jumped straight into bed claiming home sweet home while she laughed as she witness a serious son and son-in-law outside and here he was acting like her husband again; really cute and sweet. She sat down in bed next to him as he lay down telling her how he felt at home again since that house was not of his taste. He asked her what home she preferred and all he got in response was...
"I don't like either house. I like my family since they make the house a home."
"You're philosophical thoughts have begun again. It's this house I'm telling you."
"And it's this house that makes you so carefree!" They both shared a laugh before she lay down next to him and suddenly sat back up. He lifted his head to ask her what was happening when she placed her hand on his head and make him lay back down. He rested his head and closed his eyes while she patted his head gently watching the lines on his forehead disappear...
"Tired, right?" she whispered in case he was alright asleep.
"Hmmm."
"You worked so hard today."
"Hmmm."
"Probably have a headache too."
"Hmmm"
"Raman you know I don't like your hmmms and all."
"Hmmm."
"Once more and you've had it from me." He didn't reply. At first she thought he was listening to what she said, but then as he turned and grabbed her hand, she knew he had fallen asleep since he had been woke from his sleep halfway on the plane. She smiled at him and placed a kiss on his forehead before cuddling next to him and dozing off looking at his sleeping baby like face...
~~~~~
An hour later, he was freshening up after their nap while she had changed herself before and was sitting out in the balcony with her parents. She told them animatedly about Mumbai. She talked about meeting Mani there and Bala & Vandita as well while her parents admired the happiness on their daughter's face that seemed to have reappeared on her face after a long time...at least for them.
"Ishu, it's so nice to see you smiling and talking again." Her mother couldn't help think aloud and surprised Ishita who was busying talking to her father about her South Indian connection with Vandita. She smiled at her and knew her mother well enough to know exactly what she was talking about...
"Then thank your granddaughter, your unborn grandchild and your son-in-law for that. They are always doing something or the other." She smiled at her mom who got up and gave her a tight hug.
"Ishu I'm so happy for you!"
"Wow that's a lot of happiness Amma. You alright?" she asked breaking apart the hug and asking her mother to sit down again.
"Of course, we're fine. Just got a bit emotional seeing you so well settled after everything that has happened."
"Amma, please. I don't want to remember the past. It's bitter, and it hurts. All I know right now is that Raman is my husband and I just want to have a normal happy life with him and our kids."
"You will, that's what we all wish for."
"Now enough emotional talks, how about some coffee made by me?" she tried to lighten the mood after seeing her parents getting emotional.
"Why not?" Mr.Iyer exclaimed and added on how much he missed her coffee.
As she got up, Raman walked onto the balcony greeting Mr. and Mrs. Iyer with a smile with he looked at Ishita confused as she stepped inside.
"Raman, I'm making some coffee for Amma and Appa, do you want some?"
"No I'm fine and is it okay if I ask the help to make some. You shouldn't be working after a flight."
"Nothing can be done about you. My parents only like my coffee."
"Fine, and tell mom to make a light dinner. I know she'll go all out with oil and butter if you don't tell her. And she'll only listen if you say because she'll just tell me I need to be strong and out on weight."
"I agree with her. Extra buttery and oily for you now."
"And nothing can be done about you either!" They both shared a laugh oblivious that their parents were looking at them from the kitchen and balcony respectively. As they noticed their parents looking at them reminding them they weren't alone in Mumbai anymore, they quietened down and went to their own in-laws embarrassed at their talks out in the open. He sat down on the patio chair leaning back and right then Mr. Iyer got a call which he went to the side to attend. All this while Mrs. Iyer looked at Raman with teary eyes. He noticed her look the other way trying to wipe her tear. He sat up straight and looked at her softly...
"Amma..."
"Raman..." she wiped off her eyes worried he might has seen her cry.
"Why are you crying?"
"I don't know what to say." She decided to share with her son-in-law.
"What happened? Is there any problem?!"
"No, these tears are out of happiness. And I don't know how to thank you... for everything you are doing for my daughter...being a perfect husband for her and father for the baby..."
"I'll do anything and everything for my wife..."
"Raman she's a simple girl whose life become way too complicated. It was so called love and it left her with a child in her and no father to give love to it."
"Amma, but why are you telling me all this? I already know..."
"Raman I want you to know Ishita from before she married you and after that man left her. She might have told you something, but I also want you to know a few things. My daughter was called horrible things and judged by people. I would have never known about her pain before she broke the news of the baby to us, I never thought about how she felt carrying a baby without a marriage certificate or the man whose name would be stamped on the birth certificate, but he won't be by her side which society demands. Her Appa was furious and I was upset, but it was Mihika who told us we shouldn't show anger on her and that's when-"
"You didn't support Ishita before me..." he looked disbelieved at her mother with some anger shown in his tone. How could they have left their daughter at such a delicate point of her life? Tears formed in his eyes as he tried to think of going through all she told him alone for he had always thought she had supportive parents all along.
"It was my worst mistake. But I really think I have repented for that mistake by getting her married to you."
"Amma..." he shook his head at her showing his dislike for their behaviour towards his Ishita. But her mother knew it was his love for her speaking over his respect for her. And she ignored as she continued...
"My daughter's a fragile doll...she broke when that man used her and threw her. She acted brave in front of everyone and acted like society didn't mean a thing to her, but she was broken. She cried alone in the 4 corners of her room and always smiled at us so we would be strong enough to hold her together. She walked head held high in front of people who knew and others who believed rumours about it...but never cried in front of everyone. And I'm sorry for this, but I happened to see you two today when Ishita felt sick. Raman...Ishu cries to you about everything in her heart. She talks to you...and trust me she rarely does that. To have a peek into her heart and see what she feel is something which even I hardly get to do, and I'm so thankful she's got you now. Raman you have gotten the way to her heart with your love."
"Love?" he didn't know how to react. He couldn't tell a mother he didn't love her daughter when she was his wife. But love? He was put back into his thoughts about what feelings he had for Ishita when his mother in law continued talking...
"Yes, I know you're probably thinking this old lady is yapping on, but Raman I just don't know how I should tell you what you have done for my daughter...your wife."
"No not at all, speak your mind..."
"She always wanted just one thing in her entire life... to be accepted and loved. She created this fairy tale with Subbu in her mind, but it shattered and she was so lost. I was worried for her more than anything. She had always been the more vulnerable between her and Mihika, and when she was left pregnant, she was at her worst point. She started to crave the love and acceptance that she thought Subbu would give. And you know I think her fairy tale will come true now. Because at that bad time, you did come like a hope in her life, more a hope for me to see my daughter happy. And you seemed to have swept her off her feet. I'm her mom and I can tell she has love for you and that very love reflects in your eyes Raman. And I had never thought I would see my daughter this loved and cherished by someone even with her baby ever...Raman all I'm trying to say is thank you for coming into Ishita's life and giving her so much love. You've given her love and trust me that has won over our entire family!"
"Amma, my wife will always be cherished by me. In fact I respect your daughter, care for the mother of my children, trust my mother's daughter-in-law and lo...cherish my wife."
He excused himself from there under the pretext of a phone call and walked into their room to be alone for some times as his mother-in-law got his mind going crazy again and he couldn't decide on his feelings for his wife, his madrasan, his Ishita anymore.
~~~~~
On the other hand, Ishita had been facing something similar as she stepped into the kitchen. Mrs. Bhalla was there as well checking on the dinner prep when she looked at Ishita coming in and starting to boil some water.
"Ishita, don't do any of this. Please just rest." She asked her to let someone else to all this and Ishita laughed wondering if she had made Raman so caring or if Raman had made her so caring after she came to their house.
"Mummyji you're just like your son, he wouldn't step off the bed if it was in his control. And then while doing that he forgets about everything else...even himself." She whispered the last bit, but Mrs. Bhalla heard and couldn't stop the tears in her eyes. How she had longed for her son to get the love and attention of his wife ever since his first marriage and now it was finally happening thanks to Ishita.
"Thank you so much!" she hugged Ishita who was taken aback but hugged her back as she knew something was up with her Amma getting emotional too a while ago.
"Ishita, how do I thank God for sending you to Raman? I'll honestly be grateful all my life that you agreed to marry me son. I have been noticing his smiles and his happiness visible on his face. I always used to say I can understand his pain like no one else, but seems like you can as well...maybe even better then me. His small headaches going away to his old happy go lucky attitude are starting to come back. He's finally getting all he ever wanted, some love from his partner. All thanks to you!"
"Love?" she didn't know how to react. She couldn't tell a mother she didn't love her son when he was her son. But love? She was put back into her thoughts about what feelings she had for Raman when her mother in law continued talking...
"Ishita, he was so shattered when his dreams of a happy family broke. It was all he ever wanted. A family that he would shower all his love on and get the same in return. That very dream has be broken so many times now. When his father left him, I remember how young he was. He had cried for 2 days. Just 2 days and then he became silent. He kept his feelings in and smile for the world and me. He started to sleep with me despite being mocked at because he became so scared of losing. He would cry at night to his dad's picture after he thought I had gone to sleep.
Ishita didn't realize when tears came into her eyes imagining Raman's pain. She remembered the time of her Bidaai how he cried about his dad, but never mentioned it again. He still had pain and hurt from his death deep down in his heart he had not let go of. And she wouldn't ask him either because he seemed to want it that way. He could control his emotions about his dad and they helped him always remember him. She wiped her tears as Mrs. Bhalla continued...
"And the same happened when Shagun left. She had created that dream again and shattered it with her own hands. They seemed to be happy & normal couple, but soon things started to get bad and Shagun left him alone with Ruhi. But now he has gotten one more chance. You...you. Raman and the kids look like a complete family and you give him that love he's craved for since his first marriage. You are a hope in his life and that why in my life as well! Thank you for coming into our house and making it a home." Her mother-in-law engulfed her into another hug as Ishita told her it was all fine.
"He's my husband. I will do anything I can to bring a smile on his face. Because more than him, I need his smile. I really do have a lot of respect, trust, and lo...admiration for him. You've raised him right Mummyji. He's so wonderful."
She made his mother laugh as she excused herself under the pretext of checking on Ruhi as she needed to think about what had just happened. She found herself reconsidering love when she thought about Raman, her husband... her Raman.
~~~~~
She rushed into their room blushing about what his mother just told her and bumped into him as he was walking back and forth ruffling his hair. He held her shoulder instinctively making sure she wouldn't fall or get hurt while she looked away from him embarrassed and he also let go quickly thinking about their respective mother-in-law's words.
But before both of them got a chance to think about each other or say anything to each other, they were called out into the living room by his mother and they rushed out to see what the matter was. They were asked to sit down just for some coffee and to chat as they returned after so many days. But both of them couldn't think about anything else except...love. They were both stealing glances at the other, occasionally getting caught and looking away when they did and returning back to their thoughts from before.
It was only when Mr. Iyer spoke up and said something that got a strong solid reaction from them...
"Mrs. Bhalla actually, Madhu and I were wondering if we would be able to have Ishu over for a few days."
"What?! No!" they both spoke in union as their parents looked shocked, but Madhvi and Santosh shared a small thumbs up and wink before they looked at their surprised kids in shock...
