Karunanidhi's remarks on Lord Ram spark legal row

New Delhi: While Karunanidhi gets the Left's support on the Sethusamudram project, an advocate has now filed a case in the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court demanding action against him.

Advocate R K Venkatesh, who is also the Joint Secretary of the (South Chennai) AIADMK, filed a petition in the Court stating that Karunanidhi's speech had been made with "malicious intention" to outrage the religious feelings of followers of Hinduism.

Venkatesh has sought action under Section 295 A and 298 of the Indian Penal Code - requesting the court to direct the Chennai Commissioner of Police to file an FIR under Section 156 of the Criminal Procedure Code and initiate action against the CM.

The complainant criticised Karunanidhi's comments on Lord Ram.

"He is in a responsible post. So don't you think he should be all the more responsible in his words? He's hurt the religious sentiments of a community. Will he have the audacity to address the same to the Muslim community or the Christian community?" said Venkatesh.

Though the Central Government had withdrawn its affidavit filed in the Supreme Court on the Rama Setu-Adam's Bridge issue, the Chief Minister had been repeating his statement. It was a matter of belief that Lord Rama used the Setu to cross the sea to reach Sri Lanka.

Tirumala Tirupati Devastanam (TTD), managing the affairs of the Lord Venketeswara temple, has also expressed its 'unhappiness' over Karunanidhi's recent remarks on Lord Ram.

Without taking Karunanidhi's name, TTD chairman, B Karunakara Reddy on Friday told reporters that the temple administration was "unhappy" over the remarks made against Lord Ram and the epic Ramayan by "some political quarters".

He also advised the politicians to stop making "negative comments" immediately on Hindu Gods and hurting the centuries-old sentiments of people professing the religion.

However, he declined to comment on Ram Setu and the Sethusamudram project.

Myth, I usually refrain from commenting on posts with religious overtones, but I do want to say something here. What Mr. Karunanidhi thinks is his personal belief. He has nothing to prove that Sri Ram did not exist, and he can yell it from the rooftops till he is hoarse, but that will not change anything for whom Sri Ram is an embodiment of their faith and religion. This is not about being politically correct or not being able to speak your mind, or not being allowed to question divinity. This is a matter that concerns the faith of millions of people which he cannot negate simply because he doesn't believe in it.

Very well said, SJB👏.

Karunanidhi is a politician in true sense and by that, I mean someone who would do and say anything to gets votes and be in power. This man follows the ideology which created a great divide back in the 60s🤢. With 70% reservation and such statements he has made enough vote bank for next election.

Karunanidhi is the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, hence he can not comment on a issue like an ordinary person. He has to gain a lot by this comment in the TN politics. As an elder politician and as a person in the reponsible post he can not commend negetively evenif he is not believing it.

Thankyou Friends for replying! Let me put my views
  • Yes! People in responsible posts should have complete control on each word they utter😊 as the impact of those words is more and on more people!
  • Coming back to this concept of Ram and Ramsethu.Ram might be a great king with all the divine qualities. He might be a a very good king, efficient king added to that according to the rules of that point of time,he might be lil bit more ethics conscious.....Ram is a Great King...may not be the Supreme Power which rules the world!
  • If we have a glance at the family history of Ram. The Raghuvamsha..(The dynasty of Ram is called Raghu Vamsha...Raghu means SUN......the Sun dynasty) had a great king called Raghu. He was a great ruler. He made somany reforms. He started somany projects(which were long term) and the projects and development measures got completed by the time Ram came into power.
  • So during the time of Ram, the projects were complete, the eco system was perfect ..there were large trees ...the environment was perfect..the rains also were at perfect times..because of proper ecological balance.....
  • The rule of Ram...RamRajya was almost perfect. So this made people adore Ram more more and that lead to the worship of Ram.Hence Ram may not be the Supreme Power..he was a great king..who is of role model material😊
  • Say, we like Mahatma Gandhi....his satyagraha, his methods..seems amazing to us.We adore him, we even don't like his Statues,Photos to be dishonoured.....so after 300 years.....How does it look if People say...M.K.Gandhi is Bhaghwan😊
  • Driving the point home,Karunanidhi is a learnt person, may be with all the elements of a typical Indian Politician. When he says something..why should he be treated in a bad manner ..by other politicans....
  • BJP and its sister organizations......make their bread and butter on RAM issue. If Karunanidhi says RAM is a MYTH...then there is no scope for BJP to survive 😃
