I wouldn't say he's desperate but rather he doesn't want to rid himself of Meher. Meher has been such a crucial part of his life even if it was a short time. She has left a huge imprint on him and he doesn't know how to deal with it. He didn't know what to do after he left her (drinking all the time) nor now that she's back in his life (constantly irritating and harassing her). He hasn't learned how to live his life outside of Meher. No wonder he's constantly trying to find ways to be around her. His every day and waking hour orbits around Meher's existence.
