Part 4

The afternoon sun was glaring down hard with its rays being reflected back, almost defiantly, from a beautifully designed and sculpted building. From almost all angles the building screamed the alphabet K.

The exterior of the building gave a feeling of quietness and extreme organization and a peaceful atmosphere with the acreage of greenery all around and even on the building with well-maintained terrace gardens. As opposed to its exterior, the interior was full of muffled whispers, hurried footsteps and a kind of organized chaos. However, in a suite of offices on the top floor the outer cabin was a mess with files, bouquets and stacks of mail covering almost all surfaces and the phone ringing off the hook. The office belonged to none other than the newest vice-president and the heir Maan Singh Khurana and the outer cabin, in the process of, being occupied by his secretary, Sheena.

The reason for the chaos was that it was moving day for Maan and the burden of shifting and reorganization of all the stuff had fallen on Sheena, who had facilitated the shift this past week, while Maan had been busy in his meetings. Though Sheena was happy on her boss's promotion, since she has observed his dedication this past couple of years, she was tired of taking all the congratulatory messages for him as the man just wouldn't take one call where he had to make small talk with people who only wanted to be in his good books due to the power he held now.

On a deep sigh, she took the most recent message and stacked it on top of the others while making an entry of the name and message in her excel. She had to assign one staff member from the mail room just to sort Maan's mail exclusively, which was sacks-full.

"Sheena... when did this happen..."

Sheena was startled by the sudden question that broke her chain of thoughts and had looked up only to find herself looking into Maan's closed expression.

"When did what happen..." she asked on almost a croak, slightly wary of his mood unable to get what he was pointing at

"Well... you turning into a florist... and turning this office into its shop..." he drawled sarcastically. But Sheena was well immune to his sarcasm and such stormy moods though her eyes almost went out on stalks on his accusation about the flowers, since the only reason for those flowers being there was HIM, but she simply glared back and said with a smirk "Well with the pay you give me I had no choice but to make some cash on the side... and as you know I can't afford a premises on my own I thought to use this since you've rarely been here lately"

"Yeah well go find some other place and... and turn into some florist... but please do leave me and my office alone"

"Yeah... well... okay out with it... who or what's blown your top and why take it out on me and these flowers... which by the way are for you... congratulations" Sheena said, putting the most recent box of messages in front of him, and deciding it was time to stop playing as she could she he was not his own person from the lack of his smart alec comments.

"I'm sorry... there's nothing wrong" he said, his tone belying the apology of his words,

"But please do get rid these flowers... send a thank-you to all the senders and the people who wished me"

"Well... I'm already on the thank-you part... but what's wrong with the flowers that I need to get rid of them... what you have against it..."

"Whats wrong... wrong... yeah well you wouldn't know what I'll have to deal with once I'll be reeking of these flowers..." he said indignantly.

"Reeking of these flowers" she quoted him back to himself

"Yeah... do you know how much fun I'd be made of by everyone at my home... well I'll be at the butt of all jokes for whole week... Dadima and mom will be back to their matchmaking form... they'd be speculating whether I've got some girl around... and they'd be after me..."

Sheena cut him off by simply bursting into laughter on hearing his reasoning mentally agreeing with it but teased him "Oh ye the great Maan Singh Khurana of scintillating wit and personality... the perfect example of tall, dark and handsome... the heartthrob behind whom there's a long queue of girls just waiting for a glance... hungry for him, but... Alas! he has to rely on his mothers and grandmothers match-making techniques...", to which Maan simply turned a blind eye saying (rather sang) "Oh, well, pin a rose on your nose..." and went to his cabin but not before instructing her "and do get on with the extermination of these flowers and get some manly musky room freshener in here..."

A little while later

Sheena walked in Maan's cabin with a pile of documents containing the status/ issues on all the recent ongoing projects. Looking at Maan deeply engrossed in a file and already buried with the amount of work, her brow furrowed while she contemplated her ongoing dilemma. She had known him since like forever, they had been in the same school though she was his senior by one year, and she had been his secretary since the day he had joined Khurana Constructions at a managerial level. Their long history and women's fawning over him had made her take it on herself to protect him like a mother hen.

Lost in her thought, she failed to see that Maan had looked up and noticed her frown... disliking it to the T since he was quite protective of her... they had a strong bond of friendship apart from their working relationship... they were almost brother and sister.

"What's up with the frown... somebody or something troubling you... you know you can tell me anything..."

"Hey... stop getting so worked up... its nothing" she tried to calm his anxiousness while schooling her features back to normal

But Maan was not one to be fooled so easily "I know that nothing - it's not nothing... come on its better that you spit it out... you know me as well as I do... I won't getting anything done till this nothing haunts me..."

"Alright... it's just Mr. Rengsi... he's been ringing again"

"Mr. Rengsi...?"

"Daniel Rengsi, the hotelier... he's been ringing almost daily for the past month..."

"And...?" he prompted softly.

"Well... the thing is he has been asking for you... you know how you've been so busy this past month... for God's sake your calendar is booked up more than two months in advance..." she let out hesitantly.

"Your point being... and why don't you tell me the real reason you've got your knickers in a twist... because a mere caller won't cause you to lose sleep...?" Maan questioned Sheena, since he knew she protected him like a lioness protecting her cub and a mere call (or rather series of calls) she could handle... after all she helps scare all the women away.

"Urrgghhh... it's just the way he acts all cagey and won't tell me what it is about... I've tried suggesting reaching out another architect in the firm if it's regarding a project... but he just won't say a word... just keeps asking for you... to talk to you to meet you..."

"So just because he won't tell you the reason, you didn't give me his calls or fix an appointment with him out of spite"

"Hey... you think I'd be that bitter over something as petty as why he wants to talk to you... for your information he's already on your calendar for Wednesday afternoon the next week and has been there from his 10th call to you... I just didn't transfer his calls to you... as it is you haven't been in the office much whenever he called"

"I don't think you're bitter... though you not knowing what's going on is not petty... you need to know everything... you wanna be the know-it-all... a surprise or a mystery is what makes you lose your appetite and sleep... you're Sheena you know everybody and all that goes around" he teased her playfully.

"As if you'd care... even right now you're just thinking about how funny this is... isn't it...? Well so be it... the thing is even though he has an appointment next week he's been pushing to meet you earlier..." she said in an irritated voice... but then added with a cheeky smile and voice "You know I did make him spill out a bit of his reasons... I do know it's about some work where he wants yours and only your expertise and innovative ideas... and most probably the project is gonna be in Meghalaya..."

"Well that's an educated guess... nothing secretive about it... why else on earth would he wanna talk to me... of course he wants me to build something for him and considering the fact that his major business and he himself is from the north-east... Meghalaya is the obvious guess due to increased tourism..."

"Huh... nobody values or cares for the effort somebody else puts in for your work... huh..." she mumbled

"Yeah yeah... well the next time he calls make sure you direct his call to me... and I have Wednesday afternoon free this week... prepone his appointment..." Maan instructed while checking his calendar.

"Yes boss" she said before turning around to leave, looking slightly miffed.

All Maan could do was sigh and take a deep breath before turning his attention back to work while his brain mulled over Mr. Rengsi at the back of his mind.
