Life after Indian Idol: Here's a reality check

Mumbai: With the Indian Idol 3 hysteria at it's peak, we take a look at the idols of the last two seasons and do a reality check on what really happens after the big musical fight.

The past winners began with fanfare, flashy cars and full pockets. While skeptics in the music industry called them a mere flash in the pan, the idols we say, were not quite.

NO IDOL PURSUIT: The past winners Abhijeet Sawant (R)

and Sandeep Acharya began with fanfare and flashy cars. https://www.amitpaul.org

Abhijeet Sawant, whose first album titled Aapka Abhijeet Sawant managed to stick around on the music charts long enough for him to cut a recent second, which is a more successful one with a touch of Himesh and titled Junoon.

Currently caught in the music tour circuit, Abhijeet never held illusions about the fact that Indian Idol was the first step to stardom.

"It means just the beginning to stardom. Contestants shouldn't believe that it means total success," says Abhijeet.

Indian Idol 2 had a rather controversial grand finale when the judges' favourite – Karunya lost out to underdog Sandeep Acharya.

Yet, the runner up landed himself his first film playback with the superhit Lage Raho Munnabhai.

Despite having found praise from the music industry, Karunya's still struggling to find the foothold in Bollywood. So far, he has a self-titled album to his credit.

But, Sandeep Acharya believes that the Indian Idol win did change his fortunes forever. One not so successful album titled Mere Saath Saath Jahan and tons of music tours later, he has already bought himself a swanky pad in Mumbai, and is busy planning for his filmy musical future.

"My aim is to become a playback singer. I think I have the kind of voice that can bring a fresh change in the industry," says Sandeep.

While singing is a passion for Indian Idol participants, the bigger temptation no doubt is the chance to graduate into playback singing for films.

And with the two former Idols still struggling to make a mark in Bollywood music, the question remains whether the Indian Idol has really emerged as the big winner.

I think people still remember Abhijeet after 3 years, that itself speaks enough. And Karunya did get a chance to sing in a superhit movie which is a great achievement. I think with time, both will achieve even more success.
