Bollywood takes a periodic break

In Bollywood, money seems to be the problem as well as the solution. But with a series of forthcoming period films rolling on big bucks, the expectations are higher than ever.

Come October and Sudhir Mishra's 'Khoya Khoya Chand', will hit the screens. The film has around 50 to 60 crores riding on it.

"Khoya...(shot at Mehboob studio) is about the world of glamour from the magnificent era of 1950s, and it has been created with the same opulence," says Mishra.

He insists that props like large gates, vintage cars, offices, film hoardings and posters from the period give it that essential 1950s look. The next big release of the year is Sanjay Leela Bhansali's, 'Saawariya'that will be released on November 9.

Based on Fyodor Dostoevsky's 'White Nights', the film is Sony Pictures' first Indian production. It was made on a budget between 50 to 60 crore.

Says Omung Kumar, set designer of 'Saawariya' , "The sets of the film (constructed at Filmistan) are no less than a painting — from the ceiling to the floor."

While the details of 'Saawariya' are kept under the wraps, a crew member reveals, "From the lights to the set, every penny invested speaks for itself."

And if the grapevine is to be believed, real jewellery has been used in Ashutosh Gowariker's 'Jodhaa Akbar'. An insider says, "Real diamonds and gold jewellery were used in the film. At least 70 per cent of the film's cost has gone into the costume and sets."

'Jodhaa Akbar' is still under production at the ND Studios in Karjat, and is expected to cost around 70 crore. Well... if money is anything to go by, these films will certainly set new records in the genre of period films!
