TEEN Disney starlet Vanessa Hudgens has been forced to apologise after a nude photo scandal erupted during her visit to Melbourne.

A naked photo of the star of smash hit children's movie High School Musical appeared on the internet on Friday.

Hudgens, 18, is visiting Melbourne with boyfriend and co-star Zac Efron, who is promoting his latest film, Hairspray.

Yesterday Hudgens tried to put the controversy behind her with a visit to Flemington Racecourse.

While she would not discuss the humiliating episode, she issued a statement expressing her sorrow.

"I want to apologise to my fans, whose support and trust means the world to me," her statement said.

"I am embarrassed and regret having ever taken these photos."

The photo, which her representative said "was taken privately", shows Hudgens stark naked and smiling at the camera.

"It is a personal matter and it is unfortunate that this has become public," her representative said.

Hudgens shot to international stardom last year with the release of the Disney TV movie High School Musical.

Disney stuck by its young star yesterday, but said in a statement it hoped she had learned a lesson.
