I find movies which tries to prove a point without being subtle to very pretentious. Also the movies I can't connect to, where there's no depth but just some hard hitting scenes makes me feel that the movie is pretentious.

Lunchbox was one of them. I really liked the premise and the story but somehow, that emotion was not coming across, every time it was looking like a festival film. Also, I loved The Dirty Picture when I saw it for the first time, but later found it to be quite pretentious. Another recent example would be Dil Dhadakne Do but I don't know what made the film look pretentious- Zoya's direction or Priyankar's pretentious accent.😆

Thanks for reminding me of Dhobi Ghat. My friends hated that movie and dozed off while watching it but I really loved it. 😆

I generally love movies where places are treated as characters. That way I thought Dhobi ghat was a nicely made movie, especially the thumri they use in the background. Kaun Albele kinaare when Aamir shifts to his new house or ab ke sawan...they made me so happy. 😆

*Spoilers*

Also the way Aamir freaks out when he gets to know what happened to the newly married ex-resident of his room (after being involved in her life through those videos, for quite some time) or the way Prateik freaks out when the lady sees him killing rats... I could feel all that, needless to say, I didn't doze off in between and was really into the movie. 😆

Oops that was a long one, but you are the first person who said they like this movie...so yeah...got carried away. 😆

I loved Dhobi Ghaat. The thrill that I got while watching the revelation scene of that stranger by Aamir was at par with any good thriller but Kiran treated it differently without being dramatic. I would freak out like Aamir if that happened with me.😆

At the moment can think of this.

What makes it pretentious for me when I'm not able to connect to the situations and the character reactions thereof.

As silly as it may sound, I watched this movie when I was alone, away from home. The moment he finishes watching the last CD and kinda figures out what might have happened, even I looked around 'coz I was also sitting in a rented room. 😆 Funny but true. It was one thrilling scene, especially because Yasmin is the one who narrates about the city in a fun and happy mode and sort of inspires him at one level with her descriptions of the city. The neighbour aunty is even more freaky. 😆

@Crescendo : Even I would put YJHD in the same bucket, I don't know if I'd call it pretentious but that movie with it's kabira maan ja, ghar aa jaa...when bunny clearly doesnt care is definitely not my cup of tea. 😆
