'Dhamaal' has won you great reviews.
It feels good to know that your work has been appreciated. I play a wannabe detective. He's a fool who makes a mess of every situation. For a good performance, understanding and implementation are important. Hence a good director (Indra Kumar) is very important too. Indra wanted the audiences to experience dhamaal whilst watching the film. He has achieved that. Also, if the script is wrong, then you can't be funny.
You have enjoyed a slow but steady career.
When you are a newcomer you are sceptical. But I was lucky. Out of the 12 films I did, at least six did well. Eventually, success makes you confident. Now, I know I am employed for the next six months ('Aladdin', 'De Taali').
Your father (Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh) is in politics. You are a qualified architect. What made you opt for films?
I just took a chance when the opportunity came my way. I had thought that my first film would be my last. I had my education to fall back upon. Even if today things don't click I will leave. I have come here with this attitude. I live for today, this moment.
What is the mantra that you follow?
Do your work with honesty and leave the rest to destiny. In this industry, you have to respect other people's time and efforts, only then do things work out for you.
In a 'need-based' industry, you are known to enjoy great friendships.
Friendship for me is not a relationship of gains. When I meet my friends, I talk of many other things besides work.
Does your father appreciate your work?
My father is kind towards me. Even If I were the worst actor he would have supported me. But I am primarily in films due to my mother.
What do you admire about your father?
He has patience and knows how to handle people. He believes if you respect others, they will also respect you.
What is more difficult—acting or politics?
Politics is more difficult. There is no switching off, once you are in it. You can switch off only when you quit.
What kind of success do you want for yourself?
The only thing not permanent in life is success. For me it means being satisfied with my work.
What kind of remarks do you receive from girls?
Girls say I have great eyes. It's quite flattering. Every guy wants to be complimented by a girl including me—even if I were the ugliest.
What do you appreciate in a woman?
I appreciate a sense of humour. I also admire dignity in a woman—the manner in which she conducts herself. She could be bratty and yet be distinguished.
Any plans of getting settled?
I am quite settled (laughs)! I don't feel the need for marriage now. It involves making the right decision.
