Chapter 13

The sun rose the next morning to start a new chapter of Asad and Zoya's lives. Zoya could hear the alarm go off her but she was too tired to wake up. Her body felt stiff from sitting so still for all those hours last night. She put her arm from underneath the blanket and tried to find the alarm clock on her night stand. "Wake up lazy head!" she heard her sister, slapping her arm away. "I can sleep in at least today, it is my wedding day," Zoya whined. Najma laughed taking a seat on the bed. "Zoya, wake up!" she said pulling the blanket off of her. "Oh my god can't believe you didn't even change last night," Najma exclaimed. "So what? Go away!" Zoya complained. "Nope! Not until you get your butt in the bathroom and start getting ready for the day," Najma said as she walked up to the windows and pulled the curtains open. "Arghhh...I hate you," Zoya said as she sat up. Najma chuckled at Zoya. She looked so disoriented, her hair a mess, her eyes droopy, and her hands and feet still adorned with dried henna. "Come, we need to wash off that henna and get you dressed," Najma said, putting her hand out for her sister like she was talking to a little kid. "Ok," Zoya said as she accepted her sister's invite. Najma helped Zoya rinse off the henna on her hands and feet and left her to freshen up. After taking a shower, Zoya changed into a purple anarkali. As she was drying her hair with the towel, she recalled the moments with Asad last night. This day still felt like a dream. She had always wished for a life with a partner that loved her for who she was, with her perfections and her flaws. But, with each passing day, she would lose a lit bit of hope that she might not find him. That special someone who was supposed to accept her as she was. Then, life had thrown a curve ball at her. She had met Asad when and where she had least planned it. He had crashed into his life like the protons and electrons in an atom. Well, technically, she had run into him literally, she thought with a smile, remembering their first meeting. Since that day, everything changed. They had gone through many struggles to get here today. Her eyes fell on her palms that were dark with the henna of his name. The color of his love had adorned her hands, just as it had filled her heart. Feeling her stomach grumble, Zoya decided to get some breakfast. As she walked down the stairs, Zoya saw everyone hustling around. Her mother was telling the flower decorators to hurry up and finish. Her father was yelling at the caterers about the quality of their food that he had sampled just then. Imran was on the phone with someone and Najma was telling her staff to finish their tasks on time. Even with all the chaos, Zoya grinned thinking that this is exactly how she had imagined her wedding day. This was perfect, she though happily. As she reached the living room, Zeenat rushed up to her. "Oh beta, it is so late. How are you feeling?" she asked concerned. "I am fine Ammi, was just tired from yesterday," Zoya said. "Come, I have made you favorite for breakfast," Zeenat said as she took her to the dining table.

After Zoya finished eating, she decided to take a stride around the house. This was the house where she had born, she had grown up. She had so many memories in this house. Walking from one room to the next, Zoya recalled the moments she had spent there. She couldn't believe that after today, she would have to leave her house and go. She loved Asad and wanted to become his wife. But, thinking about her parents, her eyes moistened as she stood in their garden. She will miss this house, she will miss her parents. Zoya had this bittersweet feeling. On one side, she was marrying the love of her life. And on the other, she had to leave her family and her house which have been her life and move away. At that moment, Zoya felt a hand on her shoulder. She turned to see Najma with a comforting smile on her lips. "I will miss all this," Zoya said looking back at their house. "It is hard but you eventually learn," Najma said from experience. "You know, I feel bad for Ammi Abu the most. After you got married, they had me. But now...after I am gone, wouldn't they feel lonely?" Zoya wondered. "Of course they will Zoe, but they have each other. And we also will visit often. At least, we are in the same city," Najma said, trying to make Zoya see the brighter side of things. "True," Zoya agreed. "Ok, now come inside. Guests have started arriving, we got to get the bride ready," Najma said excitedly, making Zoya smile. "You need to seriously calm down. My poor niece or nephew needs a break from all the stressful work you have been doing from the past 2 days," Zoya said concerned, as she looked at her sister's bulging abdomen. "Zoya, I am fine. If not, I would take a break. It's not every day that my favorite sister gets married," Najma said. "You have a choice? I have to be your favorite," Zoya retorted. "Of course, our parents have been pretty unfair to me," Najma said dramatically. "Shut up!" Zoya said, hitting her arm playfully as the sisters walked inside.

A few hours later, Zoya sat in her room with Najma, her cousins and close friends dressed as a bride. Everyone was constantly teasing her about Asad and about his live confession on TV, and how it was so romantic. "You guys stop it seriously, if I was not wearing this lehenga, I would chase you all out of the house," Zoya warned. "Yeah guys, don't tease her. Today, only Asad or should I say Asad Jeeju has the right to do all the teasing," Najma said playfully. Hearing her words, Zoya felt her cheeks turn red. "Allah, please save me from these crazy girls," Zoya said, hiding her face in the palms of her hand. Just then, someone called out for the girls as the groom has arrived. The girls all ran off but Najma stayed back with Zoya. "Nervous?" she asked her sister. "A little, I guess," Zoya said anxiously. "It is scary but with the love Asad and Zoya you share, I know for sure everything will be great," Najma comforted. A little bit later, Zeenat came upstairs and informed the girls that the Qazi was here and it was time for the nikkah. "You look so beautiful tonight," Zeenat said as she held Zoya's face in her hands and kissed her forehead. "Thank you Ammi," Zoya said. "Asad is not going to keep his eyes off you, not that he usually can," Najma said making Zoya blush. "Ok, come let's go," Zeenat said and Zoya nodded and the ladies left.

Downstairs, Asad was sitting with Anwar and the other men on one side. There was a veil in front of him and the opposite area was reserved for the ladies. His eyes constantly kept drifting towards the stairs. Suddenly, he felt his heart race and he knew that she here. Looking up, his heart skipped a beat seeing the angel descend down the stairs. Adorned in a golden and red lehenga, Zoya looked dazzling. Her hair was tied back in a bun, her neck and ears filled with matching jewelry, and a maang teeka was placed on the center of her head. Her hair was covered with the dupatta, complimenting her overall look. Asad sat there mesmerized. He has never seen anyone look so beautiful. She was an angel, an angel that was sent to rescue him from the dark, he thought. Zoya felt her heart palpitate as she walked towards her destination. She didn't know whether it was excitement or nervousness.

She kept starting at the floor but when Zoya felt his eyes on her, she slowly lifted her lashes from the floor. As their eyes met, everything faded. All her nervous, the tiny worries that she had blew away. He was there, he would make the wrong things right. And she knew if he couldn't, he would be there for her no matter what. They both smiled at each other and their eyes were glued to each other as Zoya strolled to her place, in front of Asad on the other side of the veil. The Qazi started reciting the prayer and started the wedding ceremony. He first asked Asad for his agreement in marrying Zoya. Though Asad was answering to the Qazi, his eyes were directly on her. As he repeated his qubool hai's, Zoya felt her heart fill with bliss. Half the step of their new life was completed. The Qazi then came over to her side and asked her the same question. Zoya said her qubool hai as her cheeks filled with color. Once she signed the papers, she looked up at him to find him grinning at her. Family and friends cheered as the beautiful ceremony came to an end. The veil between the couple was removed and they now sat next to each other. Asad took her hand in his and held it. "I promise you Zoya from today, I am yours and only yours. I promise to keep you happy, be there for you whenever you need me, and to treat you with love and respect always. I promise to be a good husband and try to be a good father to our kids. I promise to be a good son to your parents. I promise to be a good brother to Najma. I don't know if I will be able to hold up these promises Zoya but I know one thing for sure, I will always try...try my very best to love you with all I have." His voice was low enough so only she could hear it. By the end of his words, Zoya eyes had moistened. "I love you Asad. I don't know if I can ever put it in words but...," she said when he interrupted her. "You don't have to. I know you do," Asad said caressing her hand. "Ok, love birds...if you are done romancing, can everyone congratulate you please," Najma said, breaking their trance. Both Asad and Zoya turned pink with Najma's teasing. Najma pulled her sister in a tight hug, "I am so happy for you Zoe," she whispered. Zoya smiled as she embraced her sister. Next, Najma moved to Asad. "I know you will keep her happy because I know that you know what happens if you don't," she said jokingly. "I know. I want all my 206 bones intact, believe me," Asad retorted making everyone chuckle. Next, Zeenat walked to her daughter, placed a kiss on her forehead, and blessed her. Anwar too did the same.

The rest of the guests too congratulated the couple. Asad looked Zoya whose eyes kept drifting towards the door. "Are you waiting for someone?" he asked. "Yeah...what? No! Nothing," Zoya said turning towards him. "Zoya, are you ok?" Asad said. "I invited someone and was hoping they would come but I guess not," Zoya said sadly, referring to Gaffur. "Maybe they had something else to do," Asad tried to relax her. "I guess," she said, upset. Zoya was hoping that Gaffur would come today. It would be a great step towards mending things. Asad had given her so much, love, respect, care, a second mother. She too wanted to give him something, at least try to. "You want to eat something, you must hungry?" Asad probed, trying to divert her thoughts. "No, I am not hun...," she stopped midsentence and her lips curved into a smile. Asad's eyes followed her gaze at the door and he was stunned. "Gaffur uncle," he said shocked. Gaffur walked up to the couple. Zoya greeted and thanked him for coming. Asad was too surprised to say anything. "Asad, I hope you are alright with me coming here," Gaffur said timidly. When Asad didn't reply, Zoya slightly nudged his shoulder urging him to speak, "say something," she said. Coming back to reality, "No uncle, it's nothing like that. I am just a little surprised to see you here," Asad told him. "I too debated a lot but someone invited me here with so much love and respect, I couldn't say no," Gaffur said watching Zoya. Asad was amazed to learn that Zoya had invited him. "Thank you," Asad said to his wife. She nodded smilingly. "Thank you for coming uncle. Even after everything that has happened...," Asad said when Gaffur interrupted. "Please Asad, don't talk about the past. Today is a new beginning for you and Zoya, I pray that you both are always happy together and your life is filled with joy, love, and prosperity," Gaffur blessed truthfully. "Thank you uncle," both Asad and Zoya said in unison.

Soon, it was time to for Zoya to leave. A teary Zoya hugged her parents, Najma, and Imran. Asad placed her arm around her waist as she leaned into his chest, escorting her to the car. Helping her settle in, Asad came to the driver's seat while Dilshad took a seat in the back. Though Asad was focusing on the door ahead, he kept glancing at her to ensure she was alright. Zoya was trying her best to compose herself but it was hard. Asad pulled over to the side startling Zoya. "Why did you stop?" she asked looking around. Taking her hand in his, "how long do you plan to keep doing this? Please Zoya, I can't see you crying like this," Asad said concerned. "I am sorry, I know I am trying," she said wiping her tears. "Zoya, I know this is probably really hard, I understand. But please don't be sad," Asad requested. "And Zoya, you can visit your parents whenever you want. Also, when you come to meet them in a day or two, may be stay there for a couple days," Dilshad suggested, trying to comfort Zoya. "What? Ammi, how can Zoya stay there? How I will live wi...," Asad was shocked at his mother's idea. Midsentence, he realized what he was saying. Seeing Asad's tomato red face, Zoya started laughing forgetting that she was just sad moment ago. Dilshad and Asad smiled at Zoya. Caressing Zoya's hair, "keep smiling like this beta," Dilshad said. "Thank you Ammi," Zoya told her, still smiling. Then she turned to Asad and gave him a huge dimpled smile. Asad relaxed a bit and they started driving home again.

Reaching home, Dilshad told the couple to wait outside and rushed inside. She returned with a small bowl of gulab jamun. "Asad, before you bring Zoya in, feed her this and then welcome her inside," Dilshad said happily. Asad nodded taking the bowl from his mother's hand. Taking a small piece of the jamun in the spoon, he offered it to Zoya. She beamed and took the bite. "Come on Asad, bring your bride home," Dilshad teased her son. Asad shyly smiled. Wrapping his arm around Zoya's waist, Asad picked her up in his arms. Zoya was surprised at his actions and feeling awkward as Dilshad was there. "Asad, what are you doing?" she hissed. "Bringing my bride home," he said with a wink. "Asad, put me down. Ammi is here," Asad murmured. "Don't worry Zoya, I didn't see anything," Dilshad said and the couple looked up to see her palm covering her eyes. "God, Asad!" Zoya said feeling embarrassed. Dilshad laughed at the two and walked away. Asad smiled at his crimson wife and continued to take her upstairs to their room.

Arriving at their destination, Asad clicked the door open and stepped inside. Zoya gasped looking at the room. This didn't look like the room that she had decorated just few weeks ago. The whole room was decorated with vanilla scented candles. There were red and white rose petals scattered everywhere. On the bed was strings of white roses that made a chandelier shaped design around the top of the bed. Moving closer to the bed, Asad moved the canopy sheets that she had draped around the bed and placed her on the bed delicately. "Welcome home Zoya," Asad said taking a seat in front of her. Being in their new bedroom was creating havoc inside Zoya. She was nervous about what was meant to happen. It wasn't like she didn't trust Asad, of course she did. But, this was all so new for her. "Zoya, what happened?" Asad asked, bringing her out of her trance. "Nothing Asad, just thinking. I can't believe that this has really happened, just feels like a dream," Zoya said. "It is a dream, my dream that is sitting in front of me," Asad said happily. Zoya grinned hearing his words. He moved closer and caressed her cheek. Zoya wrapped her arms around his neck. "I love you!" she declared pecking his lips. Asad wrapped his arm around her waist before she could move back and sealed her lips with his. Zoya was caught surprised but feeling his lips on hers, she tightened her grip around his neck. After assaulting her lips, he entered his tongue and melted it with hers. Having no choice, he broke apart and they both panted for air. Zoya was about to get off the bed when he held her wrist, preventing her from leaving. "Where are you going?" he asked. "I should probably change, I mean this dress," Zoya said unsure looking down at her lehenga. "Don't! I think you look really beautiful in this," he said honestly. "So, I should wear this everyday huh?" Zoya teased. "Yes, so I could take it off every day," Asad said huskily. Her body shivered at the intensity in his voice and from what she saw in his chocolate brown eyes. "Asad...I...," Zoya mumbled, unable to form words. "Remember I said last night that tonight even you won't be able to stop me," Asad said romantically. Her cheeks turned pink, but Zoya suddenly felt confident. The fire she saw in them gave her this serene sense of security and poise. Just trust yourself, trust you love Zoya, she told herself. Zoya looked straight into his eyes, "what if I said I don't want to stop you," she said. Asad broke out in a smirk; he had received the permission he needed. The next instant, he locked her lips over hers. As they kissed, he pulled the dupatta off her head and made her lay down on the bed, getting on top of her. Asad then started to trail kisses on her jaw, and then down the side of her neck. Zoya felt like someone ignited a storm inside her. Each time she felt his lips on her skin, her desire for him increased. "Asad...," she groaned as he started to slide off her top down her shoulders. He was leaving soft, love bites on her skin which was driving her crazy. One by one, every piece of clothing was shredded off their bodies. Pulling the duvet over them, Asad made the girl he loved truly his. Zoya felt so right giving herself to him. He had been so delicate with her, yet she could sense the passion in his love making. Tired after devoting each other several times, they both drifted off to a peaceful sleep in each other's arms.

The next morning, Zoya could hear the birds chirping outside and the warmth of the morning sun on her skin. She lifted her eyes to see her husband staring at her. "Good morning," Zoya said as a yawn escaped her lips. "Good morning, sleepy head," he teased. "What time is it?" she said rubbing her eyes. "Not too late, I guess it's quarter to ten," he said. "What? It's going to be ten and I was still sleeping, why didn't you wake me up?" Zoya complained. "Because I love watching you sleep, which I have learned just last night," Asad told her. "You are seriously crazy," she said trying to get up from the bed. Asad was in a naughty mood; after all it was their first morning after the nikkah. He tightened his hold on her waist, making it firmer. "Asad, what are you doing? Let me go," she struggled. "I like being here with you in my arms," he said. "Asad, what must Ammi be thinking? We are getting late," Zoya complained. "Ammi knows how much her son loves his wife, she would have figured why we are late," Asad said making Zoya blush. "Allah, stop it!" she said hitting his chest. Asad chuckled seeing his wife. "Please Asad, its late. Let me get off, I have to shower and get dressed," she requested. "Ok fine, but I have a condition," Asad said as he removed his arm from her around her. "What is that?" Zoya asked as she sat up covering herself with the white sheets. She saw her husband get off the bed with just his pajamas on, leaving her to admire his perfectly sculpted upper body. He came to her side and lifted her in his arms. "Asad, what are you doing?" Zoya said as she clutched onto her sheets. "You said it's getting late so I am thinking why don't we get ready together this morning," he asked seriously. "You are unbelievable," she told him. "You will know soon," Asad whispered, nuzzling her cheek. Zoya became ten times redder listening to his words. Asad laughed as he carried his beautiful wife into the bathroom for a morning shower.

A little while later, Asad and Zoya both came down to the living room to see Dilshad watching TV. Asad was in a pair of blue jeans and a navy blue T-shirt. Zoya was dressed in a green and blue chudidar. She had draped the dupatta across her shoulders, and pinned it. She also let her hair down hoping it would hide the marks that her husband had sweetly given her last night and this morning in the shower. Zoya was so glad that Dilshad had chosen to live in the room downstairs, if not who knows what she would have heard. "Good morning Ammi," Asad and Zoya said walking up to Dilshad. "Oh, so glad to see you two love birds this morning," Dilshad joked. Zoya glared at Asad who was red in embarrassed. "Sorry Ammi, the wedding and everything was just tiring," Zoya said. "I understand. Come, I will set up breakfast for you two," Dilshad said, with a glint of mischief in her eyes. Asad and Zoya both nodded silently and followed her into the dining area. As they ate, "Have you guys thought about taking a little vacation somewhere?" Dilshad questioned. "Ammi, both Asad and I are busy now. I mean I have a wedding in a few days and Asad too has just settled into his new position after the promotion," Zoya replied. "This is probably not the right time Ammi, hopefully a little later," Asad added. "Fine then, it is up to you. But you two can at least spend some time together. Asad, since you both have today off, why don't you take Zoya out?" Dilshad suggested. "Sure Ammi," Asad agreed. "Ammi, you also come with us na, what would you do here alone?" Zoya said. "I am not going to be the odd man out here," Dilshad teased the couple. "Ammi, please, you are a part of our family, you can never be the odd man out ever," Zoya said taking Dilshad's hand in hers. "I know beta, I was just kidding. You two carry on, I will join you some other day," Dilshad said.

The rest of the day, Asad and Zoya spent together. They had gone to watch a movie then to the beach. As they sat on the sand, his hand was wrapped around her, and she snuggled into his chest. "Can I ask you something?" Asad said, breaking the silence. "Hmm," she said observing the water waves. "Why did you invite Gaffur uncle?" he asked. Zoya broke apart and looked at him. "Are you mad about it?" she questioned. "No, I was just wondering why," Asad said casually. "Asad, Gaffur uncle had been in your life from the past 15+ years. No matter how he is as a person, he was the closest thing you had to a father and to a family other than Ammi. I thought that just because of one misunderstanding, a lifelong relationship shouldn't be destroyed. So, I wanted to try inviting him to at least start a step towards making things better," Zoya explained. "And you were not angry at him with what he did at the wedding? Or about what Tanveer did?" Asad said. "Asad, people make choices. It may seem wrong to us but in that moment and situation, they believe that it is the right thing to do. I was really upset and angry at Tanveer for what she did but she had her reasons. And I had mine for inviting Mr. Siddiqui yesterday," Zoya said. Asad smiled lovingly at his wife. She was indeed a blessing sent from above. "You know, you are the best wife I can have," Asad said pulling her closer. "I know," Zoya boasted and they both laughed. As they were returning, Zoya saw some chaat stalls and desired to eat them. They walked hand in hand towards the stall, and ordered some. Asad watch Zoya savor her snacks as a cute, innocent kid. The spicy pani puri moistened her eyes. A little drop of tear was about to roll down her cheek when he moved forward and wiped it away. This silent gesture meant a lot. She threw the left over puri in the garbage, moved forward, and embraced him. Asad was surprised at first but wrapped her arms around her. They stood in silence for a few minutes. Zoya broke apart, "let's go home Mr. Husband," she said. "Ok," Asad said, still confused at her actions. The drive home was quiet. They both held hands but were in their own accord. Both pondering about their one day of their married life, things seemed different and unique in its own way. Maybe, it was too soon to tell. Soon, they reached home. "So, how is it being married Mrs. Khan, you like it?" he asked, as he turned off the engine. "Hmmm, I like it. I think I will like to take up this position for the rest of my life," Zoya said. Asad smiled as he got off and came to her side of the car. "Really?" he asked, looking into her eyes. "Really," Zoya said placing her arms around his neck and pecking her lips. "Now, you have started something wifey, and I am going to end it," Asad said, picking her up in his arms. "Asad," Zoya said as she giggled. Dilshad was in her room when she heard laughter outside. From her room, she stood watching her son with his wife in his arms and laughter echoing through the hall. She smiled and prayed to Allah that her children always be happy just as they were at that moment.

Epilogue

Time started to pass. Zoya had settled into her role of a wife and daughter in law along with a daughter and sister. She perfectly played each role, to the best of her ability. She had taken the responsibility of the house on her shoulders. Zoya made sure that Dilshad usually rested and did her leisure activities but never worried about household chores. She also handled most of the business as Najma was progressing further in her pregnancy. Asad was impressed with her. He couldn't believe that his wife could do all these roles. He couldn't even handle his work and his role as a brother, son, and husband. She would go from work, to visiting her parents, then come home, cook, and still have energy to be a good wife to him. Asad felt really lucky to have her in his life. She was a best friend that he could share anything with. She was a mother who scolded him, a friend that was honest with him, and a wife who loved him till the corners of the earth. He had to never ask her anything, she always knew before he had to say anything. Asad often thanked god, many times, in a single day for the life that has been showered upon him. Zoya visited her parents often, whenever she had the time. She didn't want them to feel alone with both their daughters married. People told her that once the honeymoon period was over, romance would also end. But, that wasn't true. Her husband still kept the love and passion alive. He still bought her small gifts that may not have monetary value, but meant a lot to her. Asad would bring her flowers without any reason, or he would bring her favorite Chinese food just because he wanted to surprise her. He would take her to the beach so they could sit silently watching the stars, planning about their future together. Or when he would make love to her, so delicately yet lovingly as if she was a glass doll. His love didn't need words; she could feel it through his actions. These little things he did made her fall in love with him. Every single morning, when she woke up in his arms, she loved a little more than she did the previous night.

One evening, Asad returned to see his mother in the living room reading a book. "Salaam Ammi, what's happening?" he asked taking a seat next to his mother. "Nothing much, Zoya is not letting me do anything and is in the kitchen cooking," Dilshad said. "She is back already?" he said checking his wrist watch. "Yeah, she was done early. So, she came back but instead of resting, she decides to cook so I don't have to," Dilshad said. She was concerned about Zoya and her health. "Ammi, she just loves you too much to let you do anything," Asad told his mother. "I know. She is also a human, I don't know how she does it all, reminds me of myself sometimes when I was younger," Dilshad said recalling past memories. "Ammi, you are still young, always sweet sixteen," Asad teased, pulling her in a side hug. "Asad!" Dilshad chided, slapping his arm. "I will go check on her," Asad said and went to the kitchen. Walking in, he saw his beautiful wife working diligently. She was dressed in a pair of black capris and an orange tank top. Her hair was pulled back in a loose bun, exposing her dazzling face and her long, slender neck. Zoya was kneading the dough for the rotis when she felt his arms snake around her waist. "Hey beautiful!" he greeted kissing her cheek. "You are back!" she said happily and leaned into his embrace. "Aren't you tired?" Asad asked as he moved away and jumped up on the counter next to her. "Nope! I am fine," she said. "Are you some alien or something?" he questioned. Zoya stopped kneading and looked up at him with a puzzled look. "How come you never get tired? You do so much work," Asad said. Zoya laughed, "Asad, if you think about it as work then it is, but I don't see it as a job. When I leave for the office in the morning, I think that I am going to make people's big day a little bit more special. When I visit Ammi Abu, I am just doing what a daughter should be doing, making her parents happy and making sure they don't feel alone. And when I come home and take care of you and Ammi, I am just fulfilling the promise I made to myself and to you during our nikkah," she said. Asad broke out into a huge grin hearing her words. Getting off the counter, he pulled his wife closer wrapping his arm around her waist. "I love you," he said, kissing her forehead. Zoya smiled. "I love you too Asad," she told him. As he was about to peck her lips, she tried to move back. "Asad, I have to finish cooking," Zoya said. "So you cook! And I will do my tasting," Asad said romantically. "Asad, let me go," she warned. "No way," he stated firmly. "Fine, as you wish," Zoya said and the next moment, Asad felt his cheeks being filled with raw dough from her hands. "Zoya," he said shocked. "I told you," she said as she laughed at his shocked face. "Wait and see," Asad said as he moved closer to her. Zoya tried to free herself but couldn't. He was an inch away from her cheek when she screamed, "Ammi!" Asad immediately let go off of her startled and Dilshad came running into the kitchen. "Zoya, what happened?" she asked worried. "And Asad, what is on your face?" Dilshad asked looking at her son. "Ask your crazy daughter in law," he huffed and walked away. Dilshad walked up to Zoya and questioned her. "Nothing Ammi, he was too hungry so I thought I will feed him some dough," Zoya said naughtily making Dilshad chuckle.

Later, Dilshad helped Zoya set up the stable. Asad too joined them. "You clean up well," Zoya said and the ladies laughed at Asad's gloomy face. As Dilshad was about to serve herself, "Ammi one sec, you eat these," Zoya said pushing two smaller bowls towards her. "What is this beta?" she asked. "I know two days ago when you went to the doctor, she was worried about your blood pressure. So from today, you will eat low salt food. I made these separate for you," Zoya announced. "Ewww...low salt," Dilshad pouted like a little kid. "Ammi, this is good for you," Zoya said trying to make her eat it. "But beta, it will not taste good," Dilshad said unsure, looking at the dishes. "Ammi, eat," Zoya commanded as she served the dal and chicken to Dilshad. Dilshad complained but one glare from Zoya and she started gulping down the food. "That's like my good Ammi," Zoya said, wrapping her arm around her shoulder and kissing her cheek. Asad sat there amused. It was like Zoya had suddenly become a mother to his own mother. The relationship they both shared was something which he could never understand. Depending on the situation, they changed roles. Sometimes, Dilshad was a mother to Zoya; sometimes, they both gossiped like teenage friends; and sometimes, Zoya became a mother just like he had witnessed. He just smiled to himself as he continued to eat dinner.

Couple weeks later, Asad and Zoya have decided to go on a double date with Najma and Imran. The truth was that Najma was getting really moody with her pregnancy hormones fluctuating; hence, Imran had set this up so she would feel better. Asad and Zoya walked in with their hands intertwined looking like the perfect couple. She was wearing a white dress that went till her knees. Her long tresses were curled and lay on her back, and her ears were adorned with a pair of white, pearl studs. Asad was in a pair of jeans, white shirt, and a black leather jacket. His face perfectly shaven and hair gelled back, completing his look. They walked up to Najma and Imran who have already arrived. "How are you Tamatar?" Zoya said pulling her sister in an embrace. "I am ok," Najma said, a little gloomy. Zoya looked at Imran who shrugged his shoulder slightly. Zoya nodded as they all took a seat. "You look beautiful Zoya, marriage suits you," Najma said happily. "And so do you," she complimented. "No, I don't, I just look fat," Najma replied sadly. "Oh Tamatar, you look gorgeous. Don't say that," Zoya scolded. She then looked at Imran, who moved closer from his seat and wrapped his hand around his wife. "Zoya is right Najma, you look more beautiful than before. Motherhood makes you look the best," he added. "Really?" Najma asked innocently. "Definitely," Imran said. "And you know Tamatar if I weren't married, that too to your sister, then I would definitely have an affair with you right now," Asad teased with a wink. Everyone chuckled at the table including Najma. Zoya smiled at Asad, silently thanking him. The rest of the night both couples enjoyed thoroughly. Though Najma itself had chosen the Thai restaurant, she had complained when they ordered the food. Zoya and Imran somehow persuaded her to eat dinner. As they were driving back home, "Can I ask you something?" Asad asked. "Asad, is this your favorite question," Zoya said with a giggle. He chuckled, "I guess so," he replied. "But, ask!" she probed. "Why do you ladies get so conscious about everything when they are pregnant?" he said confused. "Hmmm...I guess they are going through so many changes so they get more mindful about their body than before," Zoya stated honestly. "Are you going to do that too?" he asked, pulling into their driveway. "Do what?" Zoya said confused. "Become all moody on me when you get pregnant?" he said casually, parking the car. "Asad," she scolded as her cheeks filled with color. "You know I love when you do," he said romantically. "You are getting crazier by the minute," Zoya said getting off the car. Asad too joined her. "Yes, crazy for you! I think we should try for a baby," he told her. "Are you sure you want to put up with my mood swings?" she joked. "I think I have decided," Asad said, picking her off the ground and sealing his lips with hers.

One morning, Zoya opened her eyes to see her husband next to her, lovingly staring at her. "Asad, you know it's pretty creepy that you watch me like this when I sleep," she complained pulling the blanket on top of her head. "It is only creepy if some stranger does it, I have full right to stare at you as long as I want," he stated, yanking the duvet off of her. "Asad," she whined, her eyes still shut. "You are such a kid, you know," Asad said, as he lovingly placed his palm over her cheek. At that moment, he realized that she was burning up. He then checked her forehead. "Zoya, I think you have a fever," Asad said concerned. "I am fine," Zoya mumbled. "Zoe, you are burning up, you have a fever," he stated. "Asad, I...," she said when he interrupted her. "Please don't say you are fine," Asad told her. "Ok," she pouted like a little kid. "Stay here, I will be back," Asad said and left. Minutes later, he returned with a glass of warm milk and some medicines for her. "Get up Zoya," he said. "I want to sleep!" she wished. Taking a seat on the bed, Asad held her shoulders and pulled her up. "Wake up Zoya," he said. She slightly opened her eyes, "What do you want?" she said tired. "Eat this," he told her, offering the milk and medicines. "After that you will leave me alone?" she asked. "Ok fine," he confirmed. She took the things and gulped it down. "Now can I sleep?" Zoya questioned. "Yes, you can," Asad said. "Can you please call Najma and tell her I want to sleep today, and maybe I am sick," Zoya said as a dull ache started in her forehead. Asad nodded as she lay back down in bed. He covered her up and called Najma to inform her. Few hours later, Zoya's slumber broke and she lifted her lashes open. She felt something cold on her head. She blinked a few times and sat up. Zoya saw Asad sitting next to her with his head resting against the headboard, and eyes closed. She then realized that he had been sitting here from the past 4 hours soaking her forehead with cold cloth, to reduce her temperature. She smiled as she ruffled his hair. Asad felt her play with his hair. He opened his eyes to see his beautiful wife grinning at him. Asad sat up, "How are you feeling now?" he asked. "Much better, thanks to you," Zoya replied. "I am glad it helped," he said. She moved closer, wrapping her arms around his torso, and leaned into his chest. "Take the next couple days off, take care of yourself," he told her. "I can't Asad. We have a wedding this weekend, and with Najma being pregnant, I have to take care of things," Zoya explained. "Zoya, I am worried for your health," he said. She moved away and looked up at him. "Don't worry Mr. Husband, I am ok. And even if I am not, you are there na to take care of me," Zoya said as she moved up to his cheek and placed a kiss. Asad smiled at her, "go freshen up! I will get something for you to eat," he told her. "Yes Boss!" she said with a mock salute and walked off to the bathroom.

About a month later, Zoya was driving back from a wedding when her phone rang. She turned on the Bluetooth attached to her ear and answered. "Zoya, Najma went into labor beta, we are at the hospital now," Zeenat announced. "What? Is she ok?" Zoya asked worried. "Yes she is. The doctor think they might have to operate but they are not sure yet," Zeenat said concerned. "I just want the baby and Najma to be safe," Zoya said. "We all do beta. The doctors want to wait a little, if not they will take her in," Zeenat said. "I will be there Ammi, I will call Asad and let him know," Zoya told her mother and ended the call. She then dialed Asad's number and informed him of what was happening. Asad decided to drive to the hospital with Dilshad and told Zoya to meet them there. An hour later, Zoya quickly walked into the hospital towards the gynecological section. She saw her family and ran up to them. "Where is Najma? How is she?" she asked. "They have taken her in for surgery," Zeenat said anxiously. Zoya closed her eyes and sent a silent prayer to Allah to keep her sister and her niece safe. Asad walked up to her and pulled her in an embrace. "It's going to be ok," he whispered to her. She just nodded and snuggled closer in his chest. The family waited as time passed. They all were trying to comfort each other and pray for the wellbeing of mother and child. Finally, after what seemed like eternity, the doctor walked out and announced that the surgery was a success. Both mother and the new baby girl were doing fine. "Can we see them?" Imran asked excitedly. "Sure Mr. Qureshi, we are going to shifting into a room soon, just give us a few minutes," the doctor said and after congratulating the family, left. Everyone hugged and cheered with joy. Later, the family walked into the room that Najma was transferred into. Imran walked up to his wife who was holding their daughter and pulled her in a hug. "Imran, be careful," Najma scolded. Imran gave her an apologetic look. Najma slowly gave him the little girl. The family gathered around admiring the little angel in Imran's arms. After some time, "Come on Imran, I want to hold her now," Zoya said impatiently. "But, Ammi Abu are first," Imran said. "I want her," she pouted. "Fine, give it to her Imran, I think we can wait," Zeenat said, making everyone laugh. Zoya cheerfully clapped her hands together and ran up to Imran. Slowly, he placed the baby girl in Zoya's arms. She looked down and smiled, may Allah bless you with everything and more than you deserved, she thought. Asad stood next to her with her arm around her waist. Najma winked at Imran and grinned. "You know you guys should really think about a little one of your own, you two look so cute right now," Najma exclaimed. Everyone smiled whereas Asad and Zoya turned strawberry red. "Shut up!" Zoya mouthed to your sister. "Why? You don't want to a baby?" Najma said directly. "It's not that we don't. But after seeing your when you were pregnant, I am just thinking of reconsidering," Asad taunted, causing everyone to chuckle. "Hey...it's not that bad! Right Imran?" Najma asked turning to her husband. "If you asked me before today, I don't know what I would have said. But, the moment I held our daughter in my arms, I think it was all worth it," Imran said. Everyone beamed at the happy couple.

Zoya was admiring the sunset from her window. The sunset always bought back sweet memories for her. It was an indication of a day ending but also about a new day that will begin tomorrow. And it also reminded her to be thankful for today, for the life that Allah has blessed her with. A yawn escaped her lips, the tiredness taking over her senses. She has been really busy with a Punjabi wedding since the past few days. The family belonged to Delhi but they desired that the wedding take place in their native place of Chandigarh. Zoya had readily agreed when the couple had bought up the idea, after all it was her job to make the bride and groom happy on their wedding day. However, as she had started packing, the thought of leaving her home and family especially Asad had made her miserable. She couldn't wait to see her husband. This was the first time since their wedding, she had to leave home for a wedding and travel. With Najma being busy with one month old Haya, yes that is what her sister had chosen as a name: Haya Imran Qureshi, Zoya was a lot more stressed than usual. She was doing the job of two people but Zoya knew that Najma needed some rest and to spend time with her new daughter. In these four days, she had immensely missed her husband. She has missed waking up next to him in bed, or scolding him to eat his breakfast before leaving for work. She had also missed kissing him good night and cuddling close in his arms in her sleep. In fact, she hadn't been able to sleep well at all. The bed felt so lonely without him next to her. She had even arranged soft cushions next to her to help, which weren't the same as her Asad, she had soon realized. Just 30 more minutes, then she could run into his arms. Zoya knew that he would definitely come to pick her up at the airport.

An hour later, Asad waited in the arrival section of Delhi airport. His eyes searched for his love in the crowd. The flight was delayed by a few minutes and he had arrived early, really early. Suddenly, his eyes stopped on her. She was dressed in comfortable yoga pants and a pink T-shirt. Her hair was pulled back in a ponytail with a few bangs loose on her forehead. He started to walk up to her when she saw him. Immediately, Zoya took off in a sprint and ran right into his arms. "I missed you so much!" she said. Wrapping one hand around her middle, "I missed you too. Welcome back home," Asad said. They stood in each other's arms, feeling at peace after four, extremely long days. When they hesitantly moved apart because they knew that they have to head home, Asad gave her a bouquet of multicolored lilies. "Oh...so pretty," Zoya squealed. He stepped closer and tucked the few loose strands from the side of her cheek back in their place. Asad felt like life has weaved back into him again. Only he knew how hard he had to push himself just to go to work and return home every day from the past 4 days. He tried to stay in the office as long as he could. He couldn't return home and see the empty kitchen, the empty backyard, or the empty room. They all reflected what he felt in his heart. "Come, let's go!" Asad said taking her hand and striding towards their car. The ride home was silent. Zoya was too tired to speak, she was happy with just him holding her left palm in his right. Asad though took in the sight of her, the sight he had missed terribly. After a few minutes, Asad broke the silence. "Zoya, can I ask you something?" he asked. She turned her focus to him from the nightly stars and nodded affirmatively. "I was thinking about what Najma said when Haya was born," he said. "What did she say?" Zoya asked confused. "That we should have a little one of our own," Asad replied. Zoya was a little surprised that Asad had bought up the topic now. "Oh," was also she managed to say. "What? You don't want a baby?" he asked, hint of pain evident in his voice. "No Asad, of course I want to have kids. It's just that you bought it up now out of nowhere," Zoya said. "Well, I have been thinking about it. But these past few days made me speak to you," Asad explained. "What happened in the past few days?" Zoya questioned as they pulled into driveway. Turning the engine off, Asad turned to face her, "I have just realized that I want a part of you with me always. These past four days, my life felt void of something Zoya, I can't live without seeing you every day. So, I want a small part of you that I could always cherish," he told her. Zoya smiled. "You know Asad, you will always have a part of me. Because my heart resides right here," she said placing her palm on his chest where she could feel his heart palpitate under her skin. "But, I do want a baby, because I want to be a mother to your kids," Zoya said as her hand moved up and cupped his face. Asad grinned, "Then I think we should start trying today," he said, decreasing the distance between them as he covered her lips with his.

Asad patted the side of the bed hoping to find his wife to cuddle with in his deep sleep. However, the space was empty. His eyes immediately opened and he sat up. He checked the time and realized it was just past midnight. Asad saw the bathroom door ajar and the lights were on. He removed the blanket, got off the bed, and walked towards to his wife. "Zoya," he called out. No response. "Zoya, are you ok?" Asad asked, getting worried with the silence. Still no response. He pushed the door fully opened and stepped in. What he saw made his heart race to a stop. "Zoya," he said shocked to see her on the floor, unconscious. Next to her were some wrappers and small cardboard boxes. Asad knelt down and cradled her in his arms. "Zoya, wake up," he said patting her cheek. She didn't respond. Slowly placing her back on the floor, Asad quickly got some water and splashed it on her face. She jerked up and seemed to be in a daze. "What happened to you?" he said scared. "Nothing, I guess I just fainted," she told him. "Fainted...are you crazy Zoya? Did you not eat? Or have you been working too hard? Why am I even asking? Of course you have been stressing yourself like you always do. You are so careless with yourself Zoya. You know wha...," Asad was almost yelling by the end of it. "Asad, stop!" Zoya said, breaking his rampage. "Stop yelling please," she pleaded. "Sorry, but Zoya you really have to take care of yourself," Asad said cupping her face in his hands. "I know," she agreed. "It is our anniversary," Zoya reminded. Asad ran a hand through his hair, feeling bad. Of course, it was their first anniversary. He had remembered when he went to bed but when he had woken up and didn't find her. And then found her on the floor in the state she was in, everything had been forgotten. His only focus had been her. "Sorry Zoya! Happy Anniversary beautiful, I love you!" Asad said, placing a kiss on her forehead. Zoya smiled, "I love you too," she said pecking his lips. Her smile faded and her lips turned into a pout. "What happened?" Asad asked. "Who celebrates their first anniversary on the bathroom floor," she said sadly. "Zoya, you are complaining about that. I was so scared seeing you like this on the floor," Asad said, shaking his head at his unbelievable wife. "Sorry," she said guiltily.

Standing up, Asad carefully helped her up to her feet. As she was about to walk back to the room, his hand held her shoulder stopping her. Wrapping her arms around her waist, he picked her up. "Asad, I can at least walk to the room," Zoya exasperated. "And I should so trust you," he mocked. Zoya glared at him but didn't say anything. He walked to their bed and placed her on the bed. "How are you feeling Zoya?" Asad asked. "I have something to tell you," she said taking his hand and placing it on her abdomen. "What happened? Does your stomach hurt?" Asad said. "No Asad, feel it!" she said lovingly. "Feel what?" he asked perplexed. Zoya giggled at her innocent husband, "I am pregnant Asad," she announced. Asad was shocked at first, but a second later, broke into the biggest smile she has ever seen him with. "Really?" he asked. She happily nodded. "When did you find out?" he asked. "I was feel nauseous from the past few days so I tested right now. Right after, I don't what happened, I guess I fainted," Zoya said. "This is the best anniversary gift ever," Asad said as he leaned in closer and captured her lips. They kissed in joy, their love has now transformed in a symbol of their child which was growing inside her. Without breaking their kiss, he pushed his pajama pants down. He then broke apart trying to take in some air. Taking the opportunity, she helped him off his shirt. He trailed open mouth kisses along her jaw, and moved down to her exposed shoulder due to the thin strap of the satin night gown. Asad caressed her bosoms and she arched her back in pleasure. Though his hand was on top of night dress, the material was pretty thin and it felt no different than when his hand was on direct contact with her skin. "Asad...!" she moaned as his teeth pushed the straps off her night dress. As he was about to slip the gown off her body, he stopped. Looking into her hazel eyes, "Will you be ok?" he asked worried. Zoya broke into a smile. Him stopping and asking her that question is exactly why she loved this man, her heart confirmed. "I am fine Asad, now stop making your wife wait for her anniversary gift," Zoya said. All he needed was that affirmation. Old boundaries broke and new ones were made as he made love to his wife that night.

The next morning when Dilshad wished Asad and Zoya on their anniversary, they told her that Zoya was expecting. Dilshad had been overjoyed. "Bless you beta," she said pulling Zoya in a hug. The Farooqui's too have also been ecstatic to hear the good news. Time seem to fly by, each day passing by in whizz. Each moment they shared was filled with laughter and joy. They even argued but those were usually filled with concern for each other. Asad was troubled about her health. Zoya though whined that he was overprotective. When she was about five months pregnant, she had almost fainted at work due to overexertion. Asad had gone ballistic. He had told her that she was appointing someone to take care of the business till she had the baby and was healthy again. "But Asad...," she was about to argue. "Please Zoya, I don't want any arguments," Asad had firmly stated. Since then, Zoya just stayed home, worked on her designs, and Najma and the new assistant took care of doing the actual work. Though Zoya got bored being home all day, she knew that Asad was just thinking about what's best and their baby. Dilshad kept her company, telling her stories about when she was pregnant with Asad. Or about what to expect as the baby grows. Zeenat and Najma too visited her often. Her husband took her out almost every night: sometimes to the beach, some nights to the mall for shopping, and others to her favorite Chinese restaurants. He made sure to always keep her entertained because he knew that Zoya hated being home, not able to do anything.

One stormy night, Zoya had woken up from sleep and went into labor at two in the morning. "Ammi!" Asad yelled down the stairs. Dilshad rushed up to their room to see Zoya clutching her abdomen, and Asad in a panic. "Asad, what is it?" she said. "It's time!" he announced. "Ahhh!" Zoya screamed as another wave of pain ran through her body. Asad lifted her up in his arms and they quickly left. Asad drove through the silent streets of Delhi with his wife and mother in the rear passenger seat. He was trying so hard to be calm and keep his focus on the road ahead but it was difficult with his wife yelling in pain every few minutes. "I know Zoya, just try to keep breathing. We are almost there," Dilshad comforted. Pulling in front of the emergency door, Asad carried Zoya in his arms while Dilshad held an umbrella over them, trying to shield the two from the pouring rain, especially Zoya. After almost twelve hours of painful labor, Asad heard the cries echo through the room. "It's a boy!" the doctor announced as she cut the umbilical cord and handed the baby to the nurse to clean up and check his vitals. Asad and Zoya saw each other as tears rested at the brim of their eyes, "You did it beautiful," he said placing a peck on her nose. "Asad, go with them, see he is alright," she said. "But Zoya...," Asad tried to say when she intervened. "I will ok fine, please go to him," Zoya told him. Asad looked at the doctor who nodded telling him to proceed. He bent down to her ears, whispered the three magical words, and left. About an hour later, everyone waited outside so they could visit the new member of their family. The doctor informed them that they could meet Zoya, and the nurse was bringing the baby. Everyone walked in and congratulated Zoya with each embracing her in a tight hug at least for a few minutes. "Mama...baby?" a one and half year old Haya asked. Her mother had said that they were going to meet a baby but there was just big human here, she thought looking around. "He is coming jaan," Najma said to her daughter. Right then, the nurse knocked and walked in with a small bundle wrapped in a light blue blanket. She placed the baby in Zoya's arms. Asad and Zoya never had seen something more beautiful than the tiny human in front of them. He had a mix of brown and hazel eyes that resembled a combination of Asad and Zoya's. His cute button nose was like his mother's. He seemed to look like a perfect blend of his mother and father. He was perfect! With tears in her eyes, she moved her son closer and slightly brushed her lips on his forehead. Zoya looked up to see the same emotions reflect in her husband's orbs.

Every single moment since their first meeting flashed in front of their eyes. They say that whatever one might plan to do with their life, the Almighty takes the ultimate decision of your life. It was definitely true in their lives. Two individuals...one from Mumbai and one from Delhi, almost 1500 Km away from each other met in the most unusual conditions. She was his wedding planner and he was supposed to get married to someone else. However, the moment they met, everything had changed. Their hearts have pushed them towards each other, it was something that was meant to be. After fighting with their minds and the rules of what society would think, their hearts have won. They faced many troubles even after confessing their feelings. But, their love has won in the end. Stealing someone else's love was a sin, but seeking true love for yourself isn't. But, you do have to ready when true love comes knocking at your door step no matter what the circumstances are. Zoya has never desired to take Asad away from Tanveer. The truth was that Asad was never Tanveer's. His commitment was because of helpless and the debt that he felt towards Gaffur, not because of love. Because if a relationship is based on true love, then nothing will be able to cause any harm to it. No matter what the world said, true love will always find its way just like Asad and Zoya have fought and stood up for their relationship. Every human being has the same heart which does the same function in one's body: pump blood to his or her organs. Then why do we have different heart rates and why does each heart beat have a different name written on it for every single person on this earth. Because, no matter who you are, the heart is a mystery that no one can solve. It has its own ways, after all Dil Ki Baatein Dil Hi Jaane.
