Chapter-2
KYUN NAHI BOLA?
A stunned Raman stridden out from the room while Ishita peeked at his receding stature. Her exterior reflected fear but her eyes were sorry for her deeds.
VANDITA AND ISHITA
Vandita tried her level best to quieten down her little sister fruitlessly. She made her sat on the bed along with her. Ishita's grip on her tightened so was her cries. Vandita could hear some broken words in between Ishita's wailing. She tried to hear it clearly and got the shock of her life when she recognised the trigger of Ishita's frenetic actions; BHALLA. How could she not notice it from the beginning! If she would have lay her eyes on it, her sister wouldn't have reacted in this way.
IYER'S LIVING ROOM
Raman was fixated on the tumultuous events just happened inside the room. Therefore, he forgot about his bleeding forehead. Mrs Bhalla who in some means assumed the things which might have happened in the confines of the room, ran to her son anxious about his health. That brought him back to earth. He looked at his mother who was wiping the blood stain from his wound with her duppatta. He winced in pain when the sequence of the fabric pricked the lesion. Watching her son's pain, her anger knew no bounds.
The Bhallas got into an argument with the Iyers regarding Ishita's state. Iyers tried to defend themselves but couldn't. They blamed them for hiding Ishita's condition. It was then when Mrs Bhalla called Ishita a MAD' that Mr Iyer lost his temper and shouted on top of his voice.
Mr Iyer: "Bas karo apna bakwas! Meri beti pagal nahi hai. Aur mujhe yeh baat ap logon se chupane ki koyi zaroorat nahi hai. Aur na hi ap logon ko koyi explanation dene ki zaroorat hai. Abhi ke abhi nikal jaao yahan se!"
(Stop this nonsense! My daughter is not mad. And I don't need to hide it from you and I don't owe you an explanation. Get out here now!)
The Bhallas left there cursing the Iyers for the inconvenience. But the junior Bhalla stayed there, subdued. Mr Iyer looked at him, anger spluttering from his eyes. Raman bowed his head in embarrassment and talked in a low tone.
"I know uncle ki ap ka koyi galti nahi hai. I'm sorry on my family's behalf. Main unse baat karunga. Trust me."
(Uncle, I know that it is not your mistake. I'll talk to them)
Soon, he also left the place leaving behind a stunned Mr Iyer who couldn't decipher Raman's words. Did he really mean what he just said? Did he mean what he just PROMISED???
BHALLA HOUSE
Toshi ji was boiling with anger even after drinking a glass of lassy. How those people could hide that their daughter is a dumb? She voiced this question constantly. Finally, Raman's patience crossed its boarder and he roared at his parents.
Raman: "Kya gungi-gungi laga rakha hai ap log? Ek baar us ladki ki baare main to socha karo...us...uske parents ke baare main...ap log nahi jaan paaoge to kaun? I'm sure ki un logon ke galti nahi hoga. Galti ap logon ki jaldbasi se hua hoga. To kuch bolne se pehale so baar socho...Pura drama banaya rakha hai."
(Why are you people keeps on saying her dump? Just think about her once...about her parents...If you won't understand then who else? I'm sure it's not their mistake, but because of your hustle. So think before saying anything. Made so much of drama)
He sprinted to his room cursing himself for speaking in such a rude way to his parents, for the first time. He felt ashamed of being so manner-less.
IYER HOUSE
Vandita was pacing to and fro in the living room where her parents and husband were sitting motionless. She was gagging her resentment holding the fuss come to pass the day.
Vandita: "Main ne bola dha na appa...she needs some more time. She cannot handle a lot of people around her. Aur shaadi...it's impossible considering her state."
(I've told you appa...)
Mr Iyer looked up at his daughter with his teary eyes. She knelt down in front of him and took his hands in his.
Vandita: "Shaadi ke hustle-bustle...use tolerate nahi ho payega appa..."
(She cannot tolerate the hustle-bustle of marriage)
Mr Iyer: "I know Vandu...lekin...beti hai vo meri...uski future ka parva to mujhe hoga na?"
(She is my daughter. I'm cared about her future)
Vandita: "Vakt dedo appa. Sab tikh hojayega."
(Give time, it'll get fine)
The day pass through an awful night to a bright morning. But no one knows what is in store for them is bright or dim!
MORNING IN RAMAN'S OFFICE
Raman was lashing at Mihir for each and everything, though there will be no point for it. Mihir knew it is the after effect of the last day. He was cursing himself for making Raman agreeing to meet the girl. He wanted to calm him down. He thought of ways to get him to the normal Raman. He was recovering from an emotional strike. And now, he is going back to the Raman of few months back.
Mihir: Hesitantly, "Yaar...hum coffee peene chalenge? Mujhe tujhse kuch kehna hai."
(Let's go for coffee? I want to tell you something)
Mihir put down his lids close and tightened his fits making his body firm to withstand any strikes. Raman sat there holding his head in his hands and agreed to Mihir.
COFFEE SHOP
They sat across a table and took a quick look through the menu for the umpteenth time. After a long wait the waiter was asked to serve them two cup of coffee, much to the annoyance of the poor thing.
Mihir cleared his throat and looked at Raman. He gestured him to go on.
Mihir: "Raman...tum...I'm sorry yaar."
Raman: Creasing his eye brows, "Kyun?"
(Why?)
Mihir: "Kal keliye. Mujhe sach main nahi pata dha ki vo gun..."
(For yesterday. I really didn't know that she is dum...)
Raman: Cutting him short, "Stop it Mihir...baar baar ek hi baat..."
(Time and again the same matter)
Mihir: "Maine kya galat kaha...she is a dump. And it's true."
(What's wrong...)
Raman: In a raged and broken tone, "No...she can't be. She can't be...I'm sure...she can't be so..."
Mihir: Shocked, "Matlab kya hai tumhara?"
(What you mean?)
Raman: "I don't know...but...but...I really don't know."
Mihir: "OK. She is not dumb. I agree. Stop being hysteric for an unknown girl."
Raman: "I think...I..."
Mihir: Widening his eyes, "I...kya?"
(I...what?)
Raman: Changing the topic, "I...I need to go home."
Mihir: "But coffee..?"
Raman: Standing up to leave, "Tum hi peelo...bye."
(You drink it. bye)
RAMAN DRIVING TO...
He was driving crazily thinking about everything that happened in his life in the past year. His eyes couldn't shut in the tears which blurred his vision as he let out screams now and then when he couldn't bear the ache in his heart. Ishita cleared the way to his past torturous events. He felt a connection with her. He felt that his problems and pains are linked to her in someway. He felt her condition is fayed to his. He wanted nothing but to catch the person who he thinks can clear all his doubts.
RAMAN'S POV
Mujhe aise kyun lag raha hai ki vo...gu...ngi...nahi hai?
(Why am I feeling that she is not dumb?)
Am I gone mad?
No...it's not madness.
But I'm sure...She is not so. She can talk.
Main uski avaz suna hai...kahi pe...!
(I've heard her voice...somewhere!)
Kab mila dha main usse?
(When did I meet her?)
Kab baat kiya dha main usse?
(When did I talk to her?)
Shayad yeh voh Ishita to nahi...?
(Is she that Ishita?)
Vo Ishita...aise nahi ho sakta...
(That Ishita can't be like this)
She knows me...no...my voice...my name...everything...so well...
She LOVES me...no...LOVED me...
But this girl...she doesn't know me.
Though, I can't stay calm until I clear my doubts...
He halted his thought process when he saw him nearing the destination. He got out of the car and walked to the enquiry department.
Raman: "Excuse me; I want to meet someone...Vandita...yeah...Vandita Balachandran se milna hai. It's urgent."
Officer: "Ap ko ten minutes wait karna padega. She'll come after the hour."
(You'd wait ten minutes)
Raman: "Yeah sure."
Officer: "Sir, you can sit in the waiting room. I'll ask her to meet you there."
Raman: "Oh, thank you so much."
WAITING ROOM
Vandu joined Raman after ten minutes, but none of them talked. They were contemplating the events of the other day. They were planning ways to break the ice...without success. Finally, Raman couldn't take it anymore. So talked to her in a straight way. Jumped straight to the topic.
Raman: In a trance, "Uski avaz kab chala gaya?"
(How she lost her voice?)
Vandu in shock: "Ap ko kaise pata?"
(How did you know?)
Raman: "Nahi pata...janna chahta hoon..."
(I don't know... But wants to know)
Vandu: "It's personal."
Raman: "I know it is...but...I don't have it in me to give blind eye to such things...I don't know why, but...I need to know it...please..."
Vandu: "It was an accident."
Raman: "Accident?"
Vandu: "Not exactly...but yeah...it was."
Raman: "I didn't get you."
Vandu: "Uski best friend ki accident dekha dha usne...In front of her eyes...From then...she...she never talked...she never wanted to talk...Never..."
Vandu's eyes welled up and her voice quivered.
Vandu: "She was such an angel...both of them were best buddies in college. But no one knows what happened to them except her..."
Raman: "Only she knows...means...there must be something she don't want to voice out..."
Vandu: "Shayad haan...Us incident ke baad vo mardon se baat nahi karti...even to appa...she gets stiffened at the mere presence of a man. That's why I was blocking your way that day"
(Maybe yes...She never talked to any man after the incident...even to appa)
Raman: "Oh I see..."
Vandu: "I'm so sorry Mr Bhalla...at the same time I'm angry at you for making her condition worse by coming there. Your name took her to the position she was in when she lost her friend. I don't know how much time will be needed to make her relax a bit...she...is..so...fragile..."
Raman: "Please...please calm down Mrs Balachandran...Just...please...I can understand your situation...And I'm also sorry."
Vandu: "No Mr Bhalla...no one can understand...No one! You can't mourn someone's death like this!"
Raman: "Maybe...yes! Aur...use normal karne keliye kuch kiya kyun nahi...? Treatments?"
(Why didn't you do something to bring her to normalcy?)
Vandu: "Treatments won't work...a miracle should happen! Mera matlab hai ki, Ishita ko normal banane keliye Shagun Bhalla ko Vapas aana pedega...And the truth is no one can bring back the dead..."
(I mean, to make Ishita normal, Shagun Bhalla should come back...No one can bring back the dead)
"Shagun..." The name gets out of his mouth like a murmur which makes Vandu wipe her tears and see a conked out Raman.
TO BE CONTINUED...
PRECAP
"She have to talk Mihir...at any cost...I'll make her talk...!"
"But Raman...isse tumhara kya lena dena?"
"Lena dena hai Mihir...SHAGUN!"
"SHAGUN?"
"Haan...uski maut ke raaz sirf Ishita janti hai...and I'll make her spurt out it...chahe kuch bhi hojaye..."
"Raman please...don't make it difficult for me...again..."
"I didn't mean to hurt you yaar... You've Mihika in your life. But what about me? No one can replace my little princess... Shagun!"
You've mistaken me Raman... Mihika is just a hope for me to move on...but...but...I'm still damn stuck with the past... I cannot even think of loving Mihika with all my heart... Mera dil ab bhi uski pass hai yaar..."
So that's it Kunjoosss...😳
