Seventy Five

Randhir knew that Dhruv was his child. If Dhruv was Sanyukta's child, then there was no way that Dhruv was not Randhir's. It meant that Sanyukta hadn't given birth to a stillborn all those years ago, even though her diary had said she did.

He wanted to confront her about it, he really did, but he didn't know how to, nor did he know what to say to her. He could barely find the words to string a proper sentence in front of her... he knew how much trauma she must have gone through after killing Mr. Ahluwalia.

Randhir knew that she must have suffered more than he did. It would not have been an easy thing to do, to see the one you loved in jail for a crime you had committed. Randhir had feared seeing that exactly, so he had taken the plunge and said he was guilty. He wasn't brave enough to see Sanyukta in jail.

Randhir was happy, while confined, as she was miserable, yet free. How could he speak to her without the utmost respect after all of this?

When Dhruv came downstairs for dinner, Randhir sat on the dining table with Dhruv and Sanyukta. Sanyukta served them both food and then sat down herself.

"Mom, he is dad," Dhruv said out loud.

"Yes he is," Sanyukta said softly to Dhruv with a smile. "He is your father."

Then she glanced up at Randhir with glossy eyes and Randhir couldn't help but smile.

He looked at his son with love. He wanted to get to know his son. Randhir wanted to spend so much time with him, so that in the last seven years of Dhruv's life, he would not have remembered that it was spent without a father.

"Daddy where have you been?" Dhruv asked, looking up at Randhir innocently.

"Out for work," Sanyukta intervened. "Your dad is a businessman Dhruv. You know where I work? Your dad owns the company."

Randhir looked at Sanyukta with shock - businessman? Randhir knew that all his business prospects had probably gone down the drain now.

He had no future. He had a criminal record - now even factories would probably not hire him.

Also, what had Sanyukta said about her working for his company? Randhir had no company. Perhaps Rehaan went ahead with their business plans and Sanyukta was referring to Rehaan's company.

Then the thought entered his head again - where was Rehaan? Did he abandon Sanyukta after he found out about Dhruv? If Sanyukta worked for Rehaan's company wouldn't she be in touch with him?

"Oh," Dhruv said, playing with his food. "But Daddy, you never called."

"Sorry," Randhir said softly. "But now Daddy will be here. Will you forgive me Dhruv?"

Sanyukta looked up at Randhir suspiciously, but he kept looking at Dhruv.

"Yes of course I'll forgive you," Dhruv said, smiling at Randhir. "I know you've been busy... I get busy too with homework, but you must have more work."

"See, he's a mature kid," Sanyukta said, smiling proudly at her son. "You're a good boy Dhruv, now finish eating your vegetables."

Dhruv looked down at his food and Randhir smiled up at Sanyukta.

Dhruv was, indeed, a very mature child.

Once they had finished eating their vegetables and Sanyukta had put Dhruv to bed, she went inside her room, leaving the door wide open. Randhir hesitated for a few moments, before entering her room. He looked at the bed and smiled as a memory from the past hit him - it was the same bed they had made love in before he left her.

"I'll sleep on the floor," Randhir mumbled.

"Don't be stupid. Just sleep on the bed," Sanyukta said, sounding irritated. "Thank God Dhruv didn't get your intelligence."

Then she froze in the spot, as she realized what she had just said and Randhir grinned widely.

"That means... that means Dhruv is our child Sanyukta?" Randhir asked her, his eyes lighting up with excitement.

He wanted to hug her right now.

"I meant... I meant... Randhir, Dhruv is adopted," Sanyukta said, sounding nervous. "But I always considered him my own son, so that just slipped."

Randhir walked up to her and held her shoulders. She looked down at his hands on her shoulders and then looked up into his eyes fearfully.

"You don't have to lie to me Sanyukta," Randhir said to her softly. "I know Dhruv is our son."

She gulped and looked down, unable to meet his eyes anymore.

"He isn't," she said again, her voice more of a whisper.

"Why are you lying Sanyukta?" Randhir asked her softly, and then touched her chin with his fingers, causing her to look up.

"I'm not," she whispered.

"Please tell me the truth," he said quietly.

"Fine," Sanyukta said, closing her eyes. "Dhruv is our son. Are you happy?"

"Very happy," Randhir replied, grinning, and then he hugged her tightly.

She leaned into his embrace and then wrapped her arms around him too. He could feel her body relaxing in his embrace.

"You told me our child was a stillborn," Randhir said softly. "Why?"

She broke the hug and then looked at him, her hands resting on his arms.

"If I told you I lied to you, would you be mad at me?" she asked him.

He shook his head and smiled at her, as he cupped her cheek.

"I can't get mad at you," he said softly to her.

"You're crazy," she said, her eyes tearing up. "I didn't know... I thought he was a stillborn too, but then years later, after you came and went from my life, Mr. Ahluwalia contacted me about him. He said he had Dhruv."

She took a deep breath and looked up at him, her eyes filled with tears.

"He said, he'll give me Dhruv's whereabouts if I sleep with him," Sanyukta continued. "For my son... for my son, I could do anything, but I didn't trust him at first. I asked him to prove it to me. He showed me DNA reports... and he also showed me pictures of Dhruv."

"What if he changed the reports?" Randhir asked her. "He's got a huge influence."

"I thought about that," Sanyukta said softly, "But as soon as I saw Dhruv's pictures... I knew. There was no doubt about it in my heart, that Dhruv was mine, that he was our baby Randhir."

Tears spilled from her eyes and Randhir squeezed her shoulders comfortingly.

"I... I said yes to him, because I'm a mother before anything else," Sanyukta said. "Then Rehaan came and saved me from him, and I somehow started to believe after that, that Mr. Ahluwalia was lying about Dhruv being my son... logically I told myself it didn't make sense. I mean, the hospital told me themselves my son was born a stillborn."

Sanyukta leaned into Randhir, and he held her against him protectively as she began to sob.

"A few days before my wedding, he started to contact me again," she continued, "I ignored him... and then, when he met us, I couldn't help it... I needed to know, I was dying inside as I tried to be logical. So I went with him... I followed my heart. He told me where Dhruv was, which orphanage he had taken him to, and then I killed him because he tried to rape me."

Randhir rubbed her back affectionately as she sobbed some more.

"I went there and I got Dhruv. Mr. Ahluwalia has such a big influence that he paid the doctor to tell me that my son was born a stillborn two years ago," Sanyukta said, as she cried some more.

"But why would he do that?" Randhir asked, finding this hard to believe.

"I didn't know Randhir," Sanyukta said, "I really didn't know. So I went to the hospital and I found my gynecologist. I spoke to her. She told me that she thought my baby was born a stillborn too. Then after some inquiry, we found out that one of the other doctors was an accomplice of Mr. Ahluwalia. So he switched my baby, with another one who was born a stillborn. It was for child trafficking."

"Ch - child trafficking?" Randhir repeated, his heart breaking.

"Yes," Sanyukta said, crying. "But... two years later, Mr. Ahluwalia decided he had enough with the business, and was trying to bribe the parent's of the children he had... or he would send them to orphanages. He had already sent Dhruv to one, because he thought I was a hopeless case... until he met me in that alley."

"We could have got evidence for that Sanyukta," Randhir said, sounding stunned. "There could have been an investigation."

"I know," Sanyukta said, sounding pained. "If we had known earlier, we could have had some investigation done... for years after I found out, I tried to find evidence to make him look bad... all I could find were a few girls, who could give their statement."

Randhir smiled. So it was Sanyukta who had got him out of jail early by asking some girls to testify against Mr. Ahluwalia.

"I was scared too Randhir... if something happened to me in all of this, Dhruv would be taken back into an orphanage. I couldn't let him be without mother or father," she said, and then she started to cry again.

Randhir pulled her body off his and then wiped away her tears.

"Don't worry, the past is behind us now," he said, looking at her softly. "I promise... no matter what happens, everything I do from now, will be for your and Dhruv's happiness, not for your misery."

She looked up into his eyes and his heart melted.

"Promise me then," she said to him softly. "Promise me that no matter what I do, you won't take the blame on your shoulders. That makes me miserable Randhir. That makes me angry. It hurts me. Don't do that again."

He stroked her hair gently and smiled.

"I promise," he said to her. "Even if I have to let you go, for your happiness, I will let you go."

"And not for your assumptions about where my happiness lies," Sanyukta said to him sternly.

"Not for my assumptions," Randhir repeated, and then held her close to him again. "I promise, I won't assume anymore."

77

Randhir would have never expected his life to change so drastically. Not just today, but five years ago... and two years before that. In fact, his whole life felt like random occurrences of luck - maybe that was what destiny meant.

"I'm going to go and change," Sanyukta said, breaking their embrace, and wiping her eyes with her hands.

She was heading towards the washroom, but Randhir grabbed her wrist from behind her and brought her back to him. He touched the sindoor on the top of her forehead lightly and he watched as tears welled in her eyes.

"Randhir," she said softly. "What are you doing?"

"Where's Rehaan?" Randhir asked her.

He brought his hands down to her cheeks and caressed them lightly as her eyes squeezed shut.

"He's somewhere," Sanyukta said softly.

"Did you get married?" Randhir asked her.

Sanyukta nodded and looked up at him.

"Yes I did," she said to him softly, as tears spilled from her eyes.

Randhir felt his own eyes fill with tears as she said that.

"Are you happy?" he asked her, holding her hands.

"Yes," she responded to him softly. "I'm very happy."

Randhir then smiled and brought her fingers up his lips before kissing her knuckles.

He looked up at her and saw that she was smiling too.

"I missed you," he said to her.

"I missed you too," she responded.

Then before he knew it, she had stood on her tiptoes, thrown her arms around his neck and had smacked her lips against his roughly in the first time in many years.

His hands wrapped against her waist, pulling her body tightly against his, as he responded to her kiss just as intensely.

78

The force of their kiss caused Randhir to lose his balance as he took a few steps backwards, the wall catching him from behind. She pressed her body further against his as one of his hands traveled up her back and had buried itself in her hair.

She was making him breathless, as she attacked his mouth, thirsty for the taste of his lips, something she hadn't felt for many years. It was like she was seeing food for the first time after starving for weeks. She was devouring him, completely.

He couldn't say he didn't like it... he loved it. He kissed her back breathlessly, as he tasted her mouth again. As his tongue slipped against hers, he knew she was holding back a moan.

Sanyukta's hands fell down to the waist of his jeans and she was pulling his tucked in shirt out. Her hands slid under his shirt, up his chest. He felt her hands pause on his chest, as she finally broke the kiss.

They were both breathless. Then she started to kiss his neck, everywhere - it wasn't in a pattern. The kisses were all over the place.

Randhir grabbed the back of her head with one hand, his other hand trying to pull her blouse up, but her body was pressed so tightly against his, that it was impossible.

"Take a step back," Randhir said softly into her ear.

"No," she mumbled against his neck. "I don't want to be apart from you."

"To be the closest we can together, we have to spend some moments apart too," Randhir told her softly.

"Why?" Sanyukta asked, and started to suck on the skin at the base of his neck.

"That's just how it works," he whispered.

"I don't like it," Sanyukta responded against his neck, then pressed her body more tightly against his.

"I love you Sanyukta," Randhir then whispered into her ear, and he could feel goosebumps rise all over her body.

She took a step back, her hands still on his arms.

"I love you too Randhir," she responded, her eyes filling up with tears, then she leaned towards him again and hugged him tightly. "I love you too."

"Do you love Rehaan?" Randhir asked her softly, as he caressed her back.

"As a friend," she replied to him, her face pressed against his chest.

"Yet you're happy with this marriage?" Randhir asked her curiously.

"My marriage has no connection to Rehaan," Sanyukta replied to Randhir. "I didn't marry him... I married someone else, someone I love more than anything or anyone else in the world - someone I love just as much as I love Dhruv."

"Who?" Randhir asked her softly.

"You," Sanyukta said, and then held him more tightly, as he felt his insides fill with shock.
