It was a breezy afternoon and rain trickled down the window pane. Sharon stretched out her hand to feel the rain on her hand and then glide on them. So similar to how his hands would glide on hers making her peaceful. Only his hands were enough to make her believe the world was a perfect place even though it had its imperfections. She retraced her hands back and looked at them imagining his hands on hers. Her eyes became blurry finally letting a trail of tears.
He sat next to the window watching the rain gush down. How she loved the rain! Somehow everything just reminded him of her. Staying away from her was the most difficult task he had to do. He had hurt her enough to break her and he couldn't hurt her more. His phone lit up to show her face on the screen. He had been avoiding her calls for days but today his hands swiped on the screen to answer the call. "Swayam, we need to talk" answered a choking voice from the other end. It was evident that she had been crying but it hurt him more that those tears were because of him.
"No Sharon.. i can't..."
"Swayam stop avoiding me ok...can't you hear me for once?"
"I said we won't.."
"Ok fine just once meet me at the place where we always meet."
"Sharon don't expect me to come."
"I won't. If you come i will be there and if you don't i will consider this the end. Neither will i call you nor meet you."
"shar.." before he could finish he heard a click. She was forgetting him. Deep down his heart ached but this was all for the better. Or was it? She looked at her phone and started crying again. Why does it have to be so difficult? Why can't they be together? everything was perfect...why did Swayam just leave her? Alone.. she reached the place. It was a garden, mostly deserted. That's why they loved it. They sat here for hours just holding hands with Sharon's head on his shoulders. Those hours were her best memories. She sat on a bench waiting for his arrival like she did for hundreds of times. But today was different. He walked on the streets still figuring out whether to choose the path t the park. He imagined Sharon sitting on the bench alone waiting for him. He couldn't just leave her waiting. Just one last time he thought. He began walking in the direction of the garden. Sharon heard footsteps coming towards her but she was disappointed to see the watchman. She smiled back at him and again looked eagerly towards the gate. "Sharon.." Sharon turned back to find Swayam standing in front of her. At that moment the only thing she wanted to do was hug him but somewhere she felt talking first would be better.
"i knew tum aaoge"
"kya baat karni hai??'
"mujhse aise kyu baat kar rahe ho? Aisa kya ho gaya kit um...chale gaye?"
"Sharon please"
"no Swayam wnough is enough. I need a valid reason."
"shar.."
"don't try to calm me...just give me a reason."
"i don't want to hurt you"
"hurt me?? Swayam you walking out was the thing that hurt me the most."
"Sharon you know that's not true. I have lost count of how many times i have hurt you and you forgave me just because you love me. "
"isn't that enough Swayam? I love you swayam"
"i love you too Sharon but you are not happy and i..."
"who told you i wasn't happy? Why do you make assumptions all the time? You left me because you assumed i am not happy?"
"it wasn't an assumption. Its the truth. I saw it in your eyes. Were you always happy with me Sharon?"
"no..and no person is always happy. You are the source of my happiness and i agree i have cried because of you. But the no. of times i have laughed whole heartedly because of you is greater. I can't live without you Swayam and you can't too, so why are you trying to break us apart? "
Swayam stood there analyzing each word Sharon said. There was a certain amount of truth in it. Nothing could compensate the happiness he would get by her being around. He had done stupid things in his life and this was at the peak of it. His eyes became moist. In the process of relieving her of pain he gave her more of it and bruised his heart too.
"Sharon..i.."
"its ok Swayam. I understand. You have always been stupid."
"haan yes...wait what?"
"what?"
"you called me stupid"
"haan toh sach kadwa hota haina.."
"really?"
"haan.."
Swayam tried to grab her hand but Sharon was quick enough to run. Swayam ran after her finally catching her holding her tight. They both laughed and looked at each other realising it had been days they did so.
"so we good?" asked Sharon.
"i promise Sharon i wont leave you ever in my life."
"i love you"
"i love you more"
"no i love you more"
"no me."
"are kaha na i love you more."
This fight continued till they laughed again and pulled each other for a tight hug.
