Chapter 8

Few hours later, Asad, Zoya, Najma, and Dilshad were in the airport going through the security process. Zoya was really nervous. She had to explain to her parents that she had fallen in love with the man of her dream, in three weeks. That wasn't hard, was it? And, let's not forget the details. That man was someone fianc and groom till just a couple hours ago. In addition, she had failed at the biggest wedding of her career. Allah, please help me! Before I asked you courage to let go off of my love, now I am asking for strength to stay by his side no matter what happens. She sighed! May be I should not tell them everything right away, maybe I should wait. But, that would be wrong! I have to tell them the most important thing in my life. "Hey, what's wrong?" Asad asked as he took her hand in his. "Nothing, just thinking," she replied as they followed Najma and Dilshad ahead of them. "About?" he said raising his eyebrows. "Hmmm...I will tell you once I figure it out," Zoya told him. She herself didn't know what to do, then how she will tell Asad, she thought. At that moment, the airhostess asking for their tickets so she could seat them interrupted them. Asad took them out of his jacket and gave it to her. "Ok, two of you will be this way, and the other two over there," she said pointing ahead. "We are not together?" Dilshad asked. "Oh I totally forgot! Since its last minute, I couldn't find four seats together," Asad said apologetically. "It's alright, Najma and I will sit together," Dilshad said teasing her son. "Ammi," he chided turning hard not to blush making the sisters giggle. "What? I am just saying what you are thinking, you as well," Dilshad stated looking at Zoya. "Aunty, I am fine. You should sit with Asad, I will be with Najma," Zoya said. "No, I insist," Dilshad said making Asad and Zoya blush. "Ok Ammi," Asad agreed, trying to get away from the whole situation. It wasn't like he didn't want to sit with Zoya, but he had never expected his mother to be teasing him either. That was an all-new embarrassing feeling all together. Najma and Dilshad went to their seats leaving the couple alone. "After you," he motioned. Zoya smiled and they walked to their seats.

In the city of New Delhi stood a tall white two story building, which resided a lovely family of four. At the front door was a small sign that read "The Faroorqui's." The bell rang and a lady in her mid-40s, dressed in a pink salwar kameez with expressive eyes similar to Zoya's and long thick black hair, opened the door. "Anwar, they are here," she yelled over her shoulder and then turned to her guests. "So glad to see you after so many years Seema and Wajid bhai," she greeted inviting them in. "It is great to see you too Zeenat," Seema said pulling her college friend in a hug after so many years. "Salaam Aunty," a young man in his late 20s said. "Haider, come here," Zeenat said taking him in an embrace. A man in his mid-40s dressed in black slacks and a light green shirt joined them. "Anwar, how are you?" Wajid greeted. "I am fine, it's good to see you after so long," Anwar said fixing the glasses that rested on the tip of his nose. "Please come in, have a seat," Zeenat said. Anwar nodded and took the guests in. As they seated on the couch, everyone remembered old times when they used to meet more often when Seema and Wajid also lived in Delhi. They moved to London when Haider was probably around 14 or 15. Now, they were returning after so long, and that too to find a bride for their son. Zeenat wished for Zoya to meet Haider, hoping the friendship would turn into a relationship. After some time, she excused herself and went into the kitchen to warm dinner. She was happy to see Haider. He seemed like a good guy, he was educated, well spoken, and from the good family. She hoped that Zoya would like Haider when they met tomorrow.

Asad sat in his seat looking at the most beautiful sight as the plane traveled towards its destination. There she sat, the love of his life, looking outside at the setting sun. Her palm rested on the small window of the plane as her eyes admired the sun setting. He was so happy that he had spoken up about what he really wanted. If not, he would not be here today. She wouldn't be sitting here next to him. Her eyes turned from the window towards him. "Why are you looking at me like that?" Zoya asked. "Just making sure this is not a dream," he said moving closer to her. Her lashes lowered to the floor as color filled her cheeks. "You know when I see you like this, I love you more," he teased. "Asad, stop we are in a plane," Zoya said trying to move back from him. He held her wrist, "stay," he ordered. She looked up into his chocolate brown eyes. "You know you haven't replied to what I said before," he said. "What?" Zoya said confused. "Zoya, usually when someone confesses their feelings, ie. Says I love you, you have to tell me what you feel," he told her. Her eyes again drifted away from him and her smile dropped from her face. Of course she loved him but saying it would make it real, very real. Zoya had always wanted to get blessings from her parents before she committed so someone. But, their situation was a bit out of the usual, which makes this much more complicated. Asad saw different emotions play out on her face. "Something is wrong?" he asked worried. "Can I be honest?" she said looking at him. He nodded, telling her to continue. She took a deep breath before starting to speak. "Asad, I always wanted my parents to bless any relationship I had before I commit for real. I have feelings for you but I feel like once I confess, it becomes something more, something real. I am just scared a little, after everything that has happened. It is not like I trust don't you or us, I do but I want my parents to do the same as well. Aunty knew everything from the start, I just want my parents to know too and give us their blessings before I...I hope you understand," Zoya said hesitantly. She wasn't sure how he would react. "That's all, you could have told me before," he said. She looked at him surprised, "really?" Zoya asked. "Zoya, I understand what you want, if I was in your place I would want the same," he explained. "Thanks Asad," she said smilingly. Asad smiled as he caressed her cheek, "I will wait as long as it takes, don't worry," he said. Asad now knew why Allah had made him fall in love with this girl. Today, he really respected her. Not only for being honest with him but for also giving their relationship the importance that it needed. It meant a lot to him that she wanted her parents to bless it before going any further with him. Zoya was so happy to hear his words. She knew what they had was real but it was things like these that assured her how lucky she was. She wrapped her arm around his and placed her head on his shoulder. He wrapped his hand around her waist pulling her closer, "I love you," Asad said placing a kiss on her temple.

Soon after, the plane landed and they went to the baggage collection area. As they gathered the bags, Zoya realized that Asad was not with them. "Aunty, did you see Asad?" she asked. "No, I thought he was with you," Dilshad said. "He was...but then he...don't know where he disappeared," she said worried as her eyes searched the crowd for him. "I am right here," he spoke and they turned to see him walking towards them. "Where did you go? At least could have told me," Zoya said concerned. "I just had something to do," he said with a mischievous smile. "And what could that be?" she questioned. Dilshad and Najma just smiled at each other and started to walk away from there, giving the couple the privacy they needed. "I wanted to get you this," Asad said as he bought forth a single white rose from behind him. "Wow, this is beautiful," Zoya said cheerfully as she took the rose from him. "Indeed it is," Asad said but his eyes were directly on her. She smiled as his gaze made her whole body go up on flames, making her cheeks turn a tint of pink. "And now even prettier," he said moving forward and tucking few tresses of her hair from her cheeks behind her ear. She looked at the rose and then up at him, "how did you know that white roses were my favorite?" she asked curiously. "I saw you the other day admiring them in the mall, so I wanted to get it for you," he replied casually. Zoya felt her heart fill with love, he had observed so much about her, every little detail. "I love all roses but white ones are really pretty," Zoya told him as she caressed the petals. He smiled. "Ok, now that I know what you like, tell me about your parents," Asad said as he started to push the cart and they started walking. "My parents? Why?" Zoya asked a bit surprised. "I want to know about them. Now that you are impressed, I have to impress them too na" he joked. Zoya giggled at his words. "Well there isn't much. Ammi is a middle school teacher, she teaches English for 5th -7th grade students. And Abu is a bank manager. And then there is me and Najma. Najma is engaged to Imran, our college friend," Zoya said. "That's nice. And what about their likes and dislikes?" he asked. "Asad, are you going to know everything today itself?" she teased. "I just want to know, and we have time," He said looking at the hallway ahead of them that lead to the exit. Zoya nodded and started telling him about her family, what their life was like, what they did together, their likes, dislikes. Asad could see how much Zoya loved and respected her parents. He totally understood why she wanted their blessings before moving forward in their relationship.

Talking with each other, they didn't realize when they had walked out of the airport and were in the area where cars picked up the passengers. "There they are," someone shouted breaking Asad and Zoya out of the trance. The next thing they knew, they were surrounded by a huge group of people from the media. Clicking away pictures and bombarding them with questions. "Ms. Zoya...is it said that Ms. Siddiqui's and Mr. Khan's wedding was broken off because of you, is that true?" one of the reporters asked. Zoya felt like a stack of bricks had fallen over her head. Her body fell numb as she just stood there frozen. Who were these people? And where did they come from? "And Mr. Asad, is Zoya really your girlfriend? How long has this been going on?" someone else questioned Asad. He too was too shocked to react. "Ms. Farooqui...you went for the wedding of Tanveer and Asad, then what happened? How come now you two are in a relationship?" another reported suspected. "Yeah Zoya, would you care to explain what happened in the past 3 weeks that the groom left his fianc of 6 months and is now with you?" the first reported asked again. "Are you pregnant?" someone else asked. Zoya just stood there as tears stung her eyes. She wanted to scream, tell them that what they were blaming her of wasn't true but she couldn't. Words seemed to be stuck in her throat. Were these people blaming her of...she felt disgusted to even think about it. "What are you people saying, stop it! This is our personal matter," Asad finally spoke up. "You dump the daughter of one of India's richest business man and get in relationship with a girl like her, you have some explaining to do," the reported accused. "How dare you?" Asad said as he let go of Zoya's hand and pounced on the guy as a lion on his prey. "How dare are you say anything about Zoya?" Asad yelled. Zoya wanted to stop Asad but her body felt too limp to react. She saw Dilshad and Najma appear and pull Asad away from the media. "Zoya, let's go!" Najma said tugging at her arm but all Zoya did was stand there and let the tears flow. "Asad," Najma said turning towards him. He walked up to her and wiped her tears, "Let's go, please," he whispered. She looked into his eyes and he could see the pain reflect in hers. It wasn't guilt of loving him...no never! It was just the agony of her love being questioned by strangers. Pain that was caused when people were making her love feel like something she had stolen away from someone else. He intertwined his hands with hers not carrying about the whole media watching and walked away from there.

Asad ushered them into the car that he had booked through the travel agent. He sat in the front passenger seat with Zoya, Najma, and Dilshad in the back. Zoya kept silently sobbing as Najma had her arms around her, trying her best to comfort her. "Zoe, its ok, please don't cry," she pleaded. "How could they Najma? How could they say something like that about me? They made me sound so...," Zoya said offended. "Zoe, it does not matter what they say, we know the truth," Najma told her. "I just don't understand how they got to know that we were going to be here," Dilshad said, to no one in particular. "I know who did it?" Asad spoke up, his teeth almost grinding trying to hold on to his rage. Zoya looked at him through her tears. "Tanveer vowed revenge, this has to be her," he said turning to look at her. "You are right, that witch!" Najma said angrily. Zoya felt fresh tears in her eyes. "Zoya, please, I can't see your cry," Asad said, turning sideways so he could face her. "I am so worried about Ammi and Abu, I don't know how they will take all this," Zoya said, sobbing. "Zoe, don't worry. Everything will be fine, I will talk to Ammi and Abu," Najma comforted. "Really?" Zoya said hopefully as she wiped her cheeks. "I promise. You know how much I love you, please don't cry," Najma said pulling her into a hug. "I love you too," Zoya said as a small smile graced her lips. Though she spoke the words to her sister, her eyes drifted towards him on their own accord. Asad smiled. He couldn't believe that Tanveer would fall so low. Of course she would, she was Gaffur Siddiqui's spoilt daughter who had been handed everything on a silver plate. So, she was bound to have some reaction when she was rejected the first time. But, he felt terrible that Zoya had to face all this because of his decision. I will apologize and talk to her, as soon as we get a moment alone, he thought.

Back in the Farooqui house, Zeenat and Anwar were too shocked to see what was playing on the TV. They were constantly showing clips of Asad and Zoya, and the headlines read "Wedding Planner causes wedding cancellation, what could be the reason?" "Zeenat, is that Zoya?" Seema asked. "No, it can't be! Anwar, what is this?" Zeenat said, still looking at the screen that kept playing the same images over and over again. "Anwar, I thought Zoya was a good girl and came here...but all this," Wajid said uncertainly. "This is not true Wajid bhai, something should have happened, Zoya was not even supposed to return till tomorrow," Zeenat said confused. "Please Zeenat, surely you guys have been lying to us," Seema accused. "No Seema, how could you say this? You know Zoya is not like that," Zeenat said, hurt that her friend could blame her daughter. "Then what is it that we are seeing on screen? We came here to see Zoya when you had asked for Haider's hand, we thought we were coming to see a good girl but of course we have been wrong," Seema said getting angry. "That is not true; my Zoya is a wonderful girl. She would never do anything wrong," Zeenat said. She just looked at Anwar who was too stunned to move. He just kept staring at the screen. She could see the agony reflect in his eyes, and it hurt her. But, what hurt more was his silence. Why wasn't he saying anything? She thought. "Let's just leave Seema," Wajid said. "Yeah, now there is no use in staying here," Seema agreed. "Seema please, don't leave like this," Zeenat said to her friend. "Please Zeenat, I think we have seen enough, Allah-hafiz," Seema said and the family turned to leave.

Precisely at that moment, Zoya and Najma entered with Asad and Dilshad closely behind them. Everyone was shocked to see the four people at the door. "Now we have really seen more than enough," Seema mocked as Zeenat and Anwar looked at their daughters. "Come Seema, Haider let's go," Wajid said and the family left not listening to Zeenat's pleas. Zoya and Najma looked at each other not knowing how to proceed. "Ammi...Abu, I have to talk to you guys," Zoya said finally gathering courage. "Tell us what Zoya, this?" Zeenat said as she dragged Zoya by the arm and made her see the TV screen. If Zoya was nervous more, she was terrified now. It was one thing to explain the media at the airport, but it was a whole other story when the pictures of her and Asad flashed on the screen with the wordings "Is she pregnant?" running below it. "Ammi, I can explain," Zoya spoke as her eyes drifted towards Asad. The next moment, a blow to her face broke her trance. Zoya was too shocked to react for a minute. "Zoya," Asad said as he took a step toward her. His mother's arm around his wrist stopped him. "It is their family matter Asad," she whispered to him. "But Ammi...," Asad exasperated. "I know, but we can't step into something we are not part of," Dilshad told him. She felt bad too, at the way things have turned out. But, she feared if Asad stepped in, it might make things worse. "Ammi, what are you doing?" Najma said as she rushed up to her sister. "Maybe what I should have done a long ago. Your Abu and I gave you two freedom to do whatever you want, and this is how you repay us," Zeenat screamed. She had hoped what they were showing in the TV was just some misconception, some false fabrication. But, seeing Zoya walk into the house with the guy had confirmed the news in itself. "Ammi please, Zoya is not wrong," Najma defended. "Of course, she is not!" Their father finally spoke up. "Isn't this the day we have been waiting for Zeenat? For our daughter to be flashed on the TV screens with an unknown guy, claiming to have broken another girl's marriage and possibly could be pregnant," Anwar said with disgust as he walked up to them. Zoya looked away as tears filled her eyes. Najma too had nothing to say at that moment. When you put it that way, it sounds bad, she thought. "Till today, nobody has ever had the courage to raise their hands on our family but today, people in my house were cursing my daughter and I couldn't say anything," Anwar said painfully.

The tears now rolled down Zoya's cheeks. "Abu, please I swear it is not what it looks like. I didn't do anything wrong," she said to her father. "Then why is he here with you?" Anwar said, looking at Asad. "Abu, can we please talk about this. I bought him here," Zoya said. "There is nothing to talk about Zoya, ask him to leave," Anwar stated. Everyone except Zeenat was shocked. "Abu, please don't," Zoya said to him. "It's me or him Zoya, choose," her father said. Zoya felt the ground move beneath her feet. She couldn't believe her ears. Her father wanted her to choose between him and her love. No, she couldn't do that. But, what will be the consequences of that? She wondered. "I will leave!" Asad firmly stated. Her head shot towards him as soon as the words hit her. "Asad, you can't leave me," Zoya sobbed. "I am not leaving you Zoya, I am just leaving from here for you," Asad said. She ran up to him, "Please Asad, I am sorry about all this," Zoya said guiltily. "No Zoya, don't apologize for something you have no control over. I just don't want to cause more problems here. But, remember, I will wait as long as you want," He told her as he stepped closer and wiped her tears. She closed her eyes in bliss at his contact. How she wished time would stand still. The sad part was that time didn't stand for anyone. A moment later, she felt him move away. Zoya opened her eyes to see him grabbing the bags. "Allah-hafiz, please take care," she told him. "You too!" he said. Next, she hugged Dilshad and bid her good bye. Though Anwar and Zeenat had not spoken to them, Dilshad and Asad both acknowledged them before they left. "Abu please, just listen to me. I have not done anything wrong," Zoya pleaded her father. "I don't want to talk about it Zoya," Anwar said as he left the room angrily and Zeenat followed. "It's not fair Abu," she yelled after him but it made no difference. Zoya turned towards the door and saw him walking away from her. It was like a part of her left with him. She fell to the floor crying. Najma ran up to her sister and pulled her into a side hug. "It will be ok Zoe, don't worry," she said as tears filled her eyes too. "I am so scared Najma, I don't want to lose him. I am so scared," she cried.

Back in Mumbai, Tanveer was in her bedroom laughing with joy as she saw the pictures of Asad and Zoya on screen. "I told you Asad, it wasn't that easy to get me away from you. I have loved you since I could remember, and you thought that you will get away so easily. Look now...your poor Zoya has to suffer due to your mistakes. And this is just the start!" she said to herself. "Just wait...wait and see how worse things are going to get...," Tanveer said as she looked at the TV screen with fuming rage.

What is going to happen with Asad and Zoya? Can things really get worse? What else does Tanveer has left of her devilish plans? Keep reading to find out! 😃
