Baby on board - Chapter 5
The next day I was awaken with a loud noise. It almost hurt my ear drum. I opened my eyes lazily, yet my vision was blurred. The noise became louder & louder. It sounded like a fire alarm. Oh shit! I literally jumped from my bed without even waiting a second.
There I found my annoying sister Muskaan, laughing like a maniac holding a siren.
'Gotcha! hahahaha' She was laughing so hard.
'Muski!' I was angry on her.
'Ouch' I got a severe pain in my left ankle.
'Aaahh..' It was paining so much.
'What happened?'
'Aaahhh..' I kept crying in pain. My ankle has sprained.
'What's wrong?' Muskaan inquired again.
'Can't you see?' 'I've got a bloody sprain in my ankle'
'Aaargh' 'God damn this is paining to much' I kept massaging my ankle for a while. I had to do it alone. What a helpless moment? Muskaan is good for nothing!
'Oho! it'll fade away soon. Just relax' She grinned.
'Relax my foot! All because of you!'
'What the hell?' 'I'm not responsible for this! you only jumped out of the bed like a fool' Muskaan chuckled.
'Trying to be smart? You are solely responsible for this Missy!' I glared at her.
'What? I didn't pull you out of the bed!' Muskaan shrugged.
'Then what? why did you kept blowing that stupid siren in a bloody high tone?'
'To wake you up!' Muskaan giggled.
'Muski! this is not funny! why are you trying to mess up with me all the time?'
'Hey I was just trying to wake you up!'
'What? didn't you have any option than blowing this bloody siren near my ear?' 'It would have made me completely deaf! My ear is paining more than my sprained ankle.' I rebuked her.
'You were sleeping like a Polar bear'!
'What?'
'Well let me correct! not because you are so cute & fluffy like a bear but you've been sleeping for hours. Even snoring loudly.'Muskaan giggled.
'I never snore while sleeping!'
'But you did today!'
'Muskiii' I raised my voice.
'Oh yeah! I had another plan to wake you up!' She smirked.
'What?' I glared at her. I know whatever it is, it would have been a trouble.
'Well first it came to my mind to throw a bucket of water at you!' 'But eh.. felt bad about the bed spreads' She chuckled.
'Muski you!' I threw a pillow at her.
'Hey calm down!' She kept giggling.
'When did you become so caring Muski? To wake me up?' I too replied her sarcastically.
'Well..' 'I don't know' She shrugged.
'Usually I have to wake you up after a difficult task, but today! Why did you wake up early?'
'Early?' Muskaan smiled sarcastically & pointed towards the alarm clock beside my bed.
'What the eff? ' Almost 8:30?'
'Muski! are you kidding me or what?'
'See you have waken up so 'early'! Muskaan laughed out.
'Are you sure it is 8:30 am ? or are you fooling me Muski?'
'Explore yourself!' Muskaan smirked by showing her wrist watch. It showed 8:30 too.
I took my mobile phone & checked! Oh crap! it's 8:30 in the morning! Damn I'm late! how is this possible? why couldn't I wake up early? I cursed myself.
It had 11 missed calls & 4 messages from Pinky. Poor girl must have been scared about me.
'What?' wait!' Muski you are late to school!'
'So are you! late to office!' Muskaan chuckled.
Muskaan took my handbag & started un-zipping it.
Oh no! what if she sees that baby bumper? It is still there!
'Muski! what are you doing?' 'Just don't touch it!' warned her. I took it off her hands.
'What?'
'Just don't open it!'
'Why? is there something like an atomic bomb or something that would eventually blast?' Muskaan chided.
'Something more horrible than that!' I muttered. I just can't let Muski know about this fake pregnancy!
'Didi' Muskaan gave a back hug.
I know what she is up to. She behaves so lovingly when she needs a favor from me.
'What do you want?'
'Didi! I think you've figured out it already.' She made a puppy face.
'Money?' 'For what?'
'Hey! my pocket money is over. Can you please give me some?'
'What? don't tell me you have finished them all? I just gave you a plenty of money for your whatever needs last week.'
'Didi...' Muskaan kept showing her puppy face.
'Aren't you going to school today?'
'Nope'
'Why?'
'No classes today!'
'But you haven't got holidays yet, right?' 'When is your exam?'
'Didi! stop asking questions like a CID officer.'
'Why? I'm your sister & I have a right to know what you are doing!'
'Oh god! We are on study leave from this week on wards. Didi please give me! I'm getting late!'
'Getting late? You just said you don't have school!'
'Urgh! I'm going to Neha's place to study!'
'Study? Seriously Muskaan?'
'Yeah! I have got some doubts in our lessons. Neha told me that she'll teach me.'
'Okay then, why do you want money? you are just going to study right?'
'Didi stop asking questions! are you gonna give it or not?' She tried to take my handbag.
'Muski wait!' Finally I had to lend some money to this rascal.
'Thank you!' She gave me a quick peck on my cheek.
'Muski seriously! for what do you want money huh? don't waste my money!'
'It's none of your business!' She slammed the door.
'And yeah don't worry I won't ask for money till you get your salary!' She spoke loudly, outside the room.
It was almost 9 am. I decided to stay at home. I hate everything! I just hope I could go to an isolated island or something & spend the rest of my life time alone.
I dialed Pinky.
'Madhu?'
'Hey Pinky!'
'OMG is that really you? You are alive!'
'Pinky!'
'Oye Madhu! Where the hell are you?' Aren't you coming to office today?'
'Uh no!' 'Unfortunately I woke up late and also my ankle has sprained.'
'Ouch! that's bad'
'Pinky, can you inform RK sir that I'm unable to come for work today? and please sign in the leave book too.'
'Haha I thought RK sir would have kidnapped you last night!' 'You didn't even call me.'
'I'm sorry Pinky! I fell asleep right after I came home. I was pretty much exhausted and the battery was low in my mobile.'
'It's okay honey. Please take care.'
'Didn't RK sir ask about me?'
'Oho! you are already missing him right?' Pinky chuckled.
'Shut up!'
'Just kidding! He has not come to the office yet.'
'Seriously?'
'Yeah. He had left a message on Adi that he is going to pick up his sister who has returned from abroad.'
'Oh okay. So will he come today?'
'Of course Madhu! you know how much he is committed for work!'
'By the you know what? the whole office is worried about you!'
'Really? why so?'
'Did you forget that you are pregnant?' Pinky giggled.
'Just stop it Pinky! This pregnancy track is driving me nuts!' ' I wanna end this!'
'Just calm down Madhu! everything is going to be fine. Just wait for few weeks! you will be free of everything.'
'Will I ? I don't think so! I just can't even stay for another 24 hrs with this bullshit!'
'Madhu! just be positive. Everything will be okay. Trust me!'
'Pinky! I wanna meet you so badly!
'Okay! I will come to see you in the evening. Just take care okay?'
'Hmm okay. Bye.'
'Bye Madhu!'
I freshened up & prepared a coffee myself & settled on a couch.
I just realized how messed up my life is. A single lie has changed everything. I had to lie back to back to save that lie. Honestly I have start hating my life. I just couldn't spend a day without a peace of my mind. Everything seemed to be troublesome.
Above everything RK sir's behavior is so strange. Why did he pretend to be my husband? Why didn't he correct that lady that he is not my husband? Why did he spend so much money on me, buying maternity frocks for me? Why is he always behind me, specially after hearing that fake pregnancy news?
Is he suspecting me or what? But why? It is none of his business. He is just my boss & I'm his employee. Why should he bother about me? Is he really spying on me or what? My mind was full of unanswered questions. How long will I have to suffer like this? I just cannot concentrate on anything. Till today, everything is hidden from Muski. What if she gets to know about this? How will she react? That will be a bigger problem.
That evening Pinky came to see me. I told her everything what had happened that evening with RK sir.
'Wow Madhu! that is like a story. So dreamy.'
'Shut up Pinky! this is not a joke.'
'Madhu! if you don't mind can I ask you something?'
'What?'
'Don't scold me okay?'
'Tell me what it is?'
'Madhu, don't you feel like RK sir...?' Pinky stopped midway.
'What? is RK sir suspecting me on my pregnancy?'
'No you stupid!'
'Then what?'
'Well! wait what? He could be suspicious but..'
'What? Tell me Pinky?'
'Didn't you feel that he has changed?'
'Changed as in?'
'Okay! I will ask you directly!' Pinky took a deep breath & popped up a shocking question.
'Madhu, don't you think that RK sir is in love with you?'
'WHAT?'
'Just calm down Madhu!'
'What kind of a stupid question is that Pinky?'
'No! it's not stupid!'
'Pinky! how can I even think of that?'
'It can be possible Madhu!'
'Possible? but how?' 'You are driving me nuts Pinky!'
'Madhu you know what? Today he seemed to be kind of worried after hearing that you haven't come for work.'
'Really? but why?'
'That's why I'm also puzzled. Not like before. He acted so strange.' 'Didn't he call you?'
'Nope'
'At least a message?'
'Nope' I answered her after re-checking my phone.
'He knows your number right?'
'Yeah.'
'But Pinky why you say so?'
'I felt like that specially after you told how he behaved with you last evening. It is strange. Would a normal boss behaves like that with his secretary? No right?'
'Oh god Pinky you are scaring me!'
'What's there to scare Madhu? RK sir perfectly suites you!' Pinky winked.
'Shut up!'
'Seriously are you nuts Pinky?' 'RK sir & me?' 'It is never possible!'
'Nothing is impossible honey!' Pinky chuckled.
'What do you mean? Asking me to marry RK sir?' I chided her.
'Wow Madhu! you are on a perfect point!' 'Why not?' She winked.
'Pinky stop this!'
'Haha jokes apart. One a serious note I'm asking.'
'Do you like RK sir.?'
'No!'
'Are you sure?'
'I told you once!'
'You honestly don't like him?'
'I..' I just couldn't give a straight answer. I used to hate him in the beginning because he used to behave ruthless, but those incidents happened recently have managed to fade away the hatred I had for him. But his strange behavior is confusing.
'Madhu! you can't lie to your best friend.'
'Pinky I admit it! I don't hate him anymore.' 'But that doesn't mean I love him'
'Madhu, to be frank I feel like RK sir is the ideal life partner for you.'
'Pinky? Are you mad?'
'No! I just can't help. I honestly feel so.'
'Just stop this Pinky!'
'Okay okay. Just relax'
'Seriously Pinky! I can't understand you.'
'Madhu! just relax that may be just another stupid idea that came up to my mind. Let's forget it.'
'Thank god! You understood that you've been speaking nonsense.'
'But Madhu! no matter what, just be careful okay?'
'I will.' I assured her.
'By the way Madhu. Did you try that baby bumper?'
'Err no!'
'Come on! Just put on that & see! & yeah specially on those maternity outfits RK sir bought you yesterday' Pinky chuckled.
Pinky forced me to wear that stupid baby bumper. Finally I had to try it out. She suggested me to wear one of those maternity frocks.
'Pinky? Do I look good?'
'Wow Madhu! you look gorgeous!'
'Gorgeous? Are you kidding me? With this bump?' 'Just let me see from the mirror!'
'Just wait for a minute' Pinky blindfolded me with her hands. She guided me to the mirror.
'Tadaaa.' She took off her hands.
I opened my eyes with fear. I know I would look horrible with a baby bump. That too in a maternity frock. But it was much better than I expected.
'You really look good Madhu!'
'Are you sure?' I was doubtful. I felt so much different.
'Trust me! You look beautiful'
'Really? or just trying to lie to make up my mood?'
'Come on! I never lie. You know I have honestly told my opinion on your outfits every time'
Initially I felt awkward but it wasn't that much horrible. The floral printed maternity dress was really beautiful & comfortable too.
'Not bad eh.' I turned around.
'Told you!' Pinky winked.
'But. when should I start wearing this?'
'Well you just can't have a belly like that in one day.' 'May be you just have to wait!'
'How long?'
'Madhu! What if you can stay at home without going for work for another week?'
'What? are you mad? I have lots of work left out!'
'Arey don't worry! we are there to manage them!'
'But will RK sir suspect me?'
'Umm.. he won't if you have a valid reason to stay'
'Just say you are unwell & the doctor has advised you to stay at home' An idea came up to Pinky's genius mind.
'Oh god Pinky!' You & your ideas!'
'Nothing is gonna be wrong as long as I'm with you darling!' She patted my back.
I almost spent a week at home, relaxing. I enjoyed every moment of freedom, though it was boring sometimes. I could complete all the household work which have been pending for a long time. Pinky used to call everyday & share what was going on the office.
Pinky informed me that RK sir was behaving strangely, inquiring about me all the time. She had assured him that I'm doing okay but advised to rest for a while. He had given me a missed call following a text messaging asking about my health. I replied none of those. According to Pinky, the whole staff was worried about me & they were planning to pay a surprise visit to my house, eventually Pinky had managed to stop them. Muskaan was busy with her mid terms & she wasn't bothered about me either.
Next day, Sunday.
It was morning & I was on the shower when I slightly heard the sound of our door bell. Muskaan was getting ready to go out with her friends.
'Muski! just check who is at the door!' I shouted.
'Okay! just wait a minute. I haven't done my make up yet!'
'Do whatever your make up after checking who it is!' I yelled at her.
'I don't care! Must be the milkman or somebody!'
'Muski just check! what if it's Pinky! don't keep whoever outside wait for long.'
'Haha if it was Pinky di she wouldn't stay silent like that! She would probably bang on the door!' Muskaan chuckled.
After about almost 10 minutes Muskaan opened the door. It was a complete stranger who was standing in front of her patiently, holding a box, which probably looked like a gift.
'Umm.. yes?'
'Is this Miss. Madhubala Malik's residence?'
'Yeah. Why?'
'Can you talk to her please?'
'Umm why?'
'Just call for a while please!'
'Hey! did you order something huh? I guess somebody has sent a parcel for you.' Muskaan asked loudly.
'What?'
'Yeah I don't know!' ' Such a handsome delivery guy' Muskaan muttered.
'You are mistaken Miss...' RK spoke in a stern voice. How the hell can he be called as a delivery guy? He has come to see Madhu in just casual wear but whoever this girl has misinterpreted. He thought.
'Miss. Muskaan Malik!' Muskaan spoke with pride.
'Oh a lovely name!' RK complimented.
'Haha I knew! that's how guys start flirting with girls by saying you have a lovely name this and that!' Muskaan chuckled.
'Excuse me?'
Muskaan had that extraordinary ability of annoying people. RK was about to loose his patience. He'd been standing outside for more than 10 minutes & now a girl is standing like a guard not letting him go inside.
'Who is it?" I shouted loudly. I have almost done showing & just came out of the bathroom.
'Why are you searching for Miss. Madhubala Malik?' & what is this?' Muskaan kept questioning like a CID officer.
'Hey! you are mistaken. I'm not a bloody delivery guy I'm..'RK was trying to explain.
(Muskaan cuts in)
'Didi! when did this happen?' She kept shouting.
'What?' replied her while changing.
'I never know you got a boyfriend!'
'What the eff? Boy friend?' I replied back loudly.
'Hey! I'm not Madhubala's boyfriend! I'm Rishabh Kundra! Her boss!' RK spoke sternly this time.
"What the..?' Muskaan was surprised.
'Can I please meet Madhu?'
'Oho so you call her Madhu too!'
'Oops! wait a minute. She was on the shower.' 'Anyway sorry for messing up!' Muskaan chuckled.
'It's okay'
'You could have introduced yourself first!'
'How could I? You kept interrupting me!' Maan glared at her.
Nice to meet you Mr. Khurana!' "I'm Madhu's one & only sister!'
'Not Khurana! Kundra!'
'Whatever! those surnames are so confusing & difficult to pronounce' Muskaan smiled at him sarcastically.
'Surprised to see you here! that too with a gift & flowers.'Muskaan winked.
'Umm.. can you just call Madhu if she is done?'
'Why so impatient?' Muskaan kept winking.
RK felt uncomfortable. Poor RK! Madhu's little sister was torturing him.
"Didi! your boss has come to meet you!''
'What?' I was shocked to hear it.
'Boss? who? RK sir?'
'Yeah yeah that one Rishabh K... Kundra! Damn those names!'Muskaan muttered.
OMG I'm in a big trouble! RK sir has come here? What the hell? & Muski is also at home! What can I do? Please somebody help me! Madhu you are screwed!
