After a couple of difficult months for the Bhallas things had finally settled down in recent days. A month long custody battle for Ruhi and Adi's parental rights had brought the two children back to where they belonged, with Raman and Ishita. Shagun, though beside herself about losing to Ishita had taken the actual loss of both her kids well. So well, that the ugly face of her motherhood had been finally revealed to Adi in court. While he had been heartbroken to realize that his mother cared about herself above all, Raman was confident that his son would soon get past with the support of the entire family and the guidance of proper parents for the first time in many years.
Ishita's unending joy at having Ruhi back was bursting from her every pore. And Raman's immense relief and happiness of having both his kids together for the first time in his life was immeasurable. The Bhalla parivaar felt complete and was brimming with contentment. At least on the surface.
The truth was that Raman and Ishita's relationship had regressed. All the steps forward they had taken as partners had been marred by the decisions and mistakes made in the emotional turmoil of the last few months. The trust had been broken. Though to outsiders, nothing seemed amiss. Ishita knew they needed to have a serious talk now that things had settled down. But with the kids being home, it had gotten hectic for her again and they hadn't had time to sit down together.
Raman for his part was brimming with additional excitement as this was the week Ishita was getting her cast off. Her leg would be back to normal and they could pick up where they left off countless times. His parents were anyway taking the kids to dinner at Pammi aunty's and thankfully Ishita had declined to go in order to catch up on rest. As he pushed the wheelchair through the living room, his family chimed in with their usual jokes and comments.
"Shukar karein Ishita puttar, tera pau toh teek taak ho jayega. Raman zara sambhalke le jaana ise."
"Haan Bhai, raaste mein kuch hogaya toh aap do aur mahine saadu ban jayengey!" Romi sneaked in a joke as Toshi smacked her younger son and Simmi laughed. Ishita was taking her time hugging Ruhi goodbye and didn't appear to notice the remark. She had been extra clingy with her daughter since she got back. Or pretended not to hear the comment, Raman wasn't sure.
"Shut up Romi. Ab chale madam, nai toh Ruhi ki hawa nikal jayegi." His wife glared at him in mock anger and gave Ruhi a final kiss. As he wheeled her out of the house Raman wondered what his family thought was the status of the relationship between him and Ishita.
"Raman yeh koi Ferrari nahin jo aap itni tez chalayenge. Romi teekh tha...yeh cast nikalne mein, doctor nayi wali lagwayenge."
"Aisa joke bhi mat karna. Ab ke baad, us couch ke saath yeh wheelchair bhi mujhe kabhi nahi dekhna." He frowned in real worry as he slowed his previous rush to get them out of the building. Ishita chuckled at her frustrated husband. She felt his pain, mostly. Their last truly worry free moment together was the night after she brought Raman back from the airport, when he had planned a special evening for her. How she wished to have that lost milestone back again. Finally free of all the complications and misunderstandings of the months before that. Just the two of them and what they felt for each other. Even Holi, as much as she felt ready to give in to anything he wanted to do to her in that moment, the memory was clouded in her mind with what happened right after. No, Ishita was sure that before they could take the next step Raman and her really needed to have a proper conversation. Otherwise she feared what else could destroy something that should be a treasured memory. That's why she had declined to go to Pammi aunty's for dinner tonight. They would get the break they needed from the family for their talk.
Meanwhile the whole time they were waiting at the doctor's office, Raman had been concocting a plan to make the night special for his Madrassan. He had secretly purchased all the necessary materials for the evening including candles and flowers which he'd hidden away in Romi's room. Now he'd just have to get his Madrassan to cooperate. He was rubbing his hands thoughtfully with a hint of glee in his eye as he paced the room. Ishita who was sitting on the patient bed raised an eyebrow at his strange behavior.
"Zyaada khushi nai ho rahi aapko? Mera cast uthar rahi hai"
"Ohho, woh to sahi hai lekin faida toh mera hi hai Madrassan!" Ishita blushed knowingly. "Itna sharmao mat aur dimaag gutter se nikalo. Mujhe is baat ki khushi hain ki ab tumhara PA banke ghumna nahi hoga. I'm thinking what to do with all my free time!"
"Haan wapas Raavan kumar ban jao phir! Waise bhi Ram Kumar bohut boring hota hai"
"Achcha, dekh..."
Before he could finish his threat the doctor came with a nurse to remove the cast. An hour later, they had made it back home to raucous applause from the family as Ishita showed off her completely healed foot and even did a little jig on Ruhi's insistence to prove she was back to normal.
"Ishita! Kya kar rahi hai pagal. Jumping wumping mat karo yaar please." Simmi looked worried.
"Haan puttar, zyada weight mat rakhna ispe."
"Don't worry Papaji, Simmi, doctor ne kaha ki main normally chal sakti hoon. In fact yeh bhi kaha ki yehi karna hai taaki puri tarah strength aajayega isme." Ishita didn't notice Raman's smirk in the background.
"Ishita aunty, kya aap football bhi khel sakte ho. Papa, main aur Ruhi Sunday ko khelne jaayenge."
His dad replied. "Adi beta, Ishita aunty ne fracture ke pehle football ka chehra tak na dekhi hogi. Ab khelegi kya?"
"Stop it Raman. Adi, aap sab khelo, main dekhungi teek hai?" Adi nodded smiling at his father's teasing of her. Since asking to live with his father, Adi had been feeling guilty that he chose him over his mother but each day since he got here he started to feel better about it. He could see the genuine love and care that his father and Ishita aunty had for him. And it was nice to be with Dadi and Dadu and Chachu and bua. And of course Ruhi. He didn't have to worry about as much anymore and for the first time in a long time he felt happy.
Toshiji interrupted the fun at that moment, "Ab chetti karo. Adi, Ruhi, tayyar ho jaao. Humein nikalna hai. Ishita zara dekh lena."
Ishita got them ready as Raman went to make his own preparations. After she saw everyone off, Ishita busied herself in the kitchen getting dinner ready for Raman. As she set the table for the two of them, he walked out already changed into his nightclothes hiding something behind his back. As she watched him suspiciously, he presented her with a beautiful bouquet of white roses. Ishita was surprised and tried to hide her worry behind a smile.
"Wow, occasion kya hain Raavan Kumar?"
"I told you na, tumhari wheelchair se chutkare ki celebration" He laughed at her cute frown. "Thank you toh bolo"
"Thank you, they're beautiful. Main inhe paani mein dal deti hoon" she said simply and walked off into kitchen as Raman muttered to himself under his breath, Madrassan ko thank you bolna teekh se sikhana padega'.
In truth, Ishita had escaped to the kitchen because she could see Romantic Kumar coming out and suddenly felt nervous. She wasn't ready, not tonight. There was nothing she wanted more than to have him flirt with her, to romance her, to make...love to her. She blushed deeply cursing her own rational mind. If only she could let herself be carried away by the moment he was trying to create. But her brain told her that these things can fester and as strong as their relationship was, it was just as unpredictable and she didn't want to risk the cart before the horse.
"Khaale?"
She was making him sit down as he frowned on her obliviousness. Was it nervousness? He'd felt that she had become more comfortable with him recently, definitely since the Holi...incident. They ate silently, him trying to make eyes at her as she avoided his gaze with a purposefulness that he couldn't decipher.
"Raman, kuch baat karna tha"
"Haan bolo"
"Nahin dinner ke baad, baithke baat karenge?"
"Dinner ke baad, baat karna zaroori hai kya? Mera toh kuch aur iraada tha." He looked at her meaningfully.
Ishita looked away shyly and in frustration. He was definitely set on the plan. How would she disappoint him and convince him to discuss his emotions instead?!
Afterward he tried to help clean up hoping the congestion of the kitchen would put her into his arms accidently. Otherwise he wasn't exactly sure how to take that first step with her avoiding his efforts in this way. But she shooed him off and he returned to the bedroom in defeat. She would have to come there in the end and things in the room were set up in a way that wouldn't let her feign ignorance of his intentions. His Madrassan wouldn't escape him this night.
