From Ramayan, I know that Ravan had been defeated many times by the ape king Bali. There are several instances when Bali captured Ravan and tortured him.....

Like, once, Bali tied Ravan to his tail and flew around the world, so that the whole world could see the state Ravan was in and laugh at him....

Bali was undefeatable, even by Ravan. This is mainly because of the boon Brahma granted Bali. Bali had a boon that he would receive half of the powers of the person who he is confronting, while he is confronting that person. That is the same reason why Ram had to kill Bali while hiding behind a tree. If he confronted him, Bali would get half of Ram's powers, in other words, half of Lord Vishnu's powers, which wouldn't be too good....

Back to my initial question....

Does anyone know all of the stories between Ravan and Bali, and what actually caused them to establish friendship later on?????

Thanks.......

I am shutting down the system now and will post reply tomorrow. As of now, let me just say that when people say Bali, they usually mean Mahabali, the one from whom Vishnu as Vaman avatar took everything. The ape king was Vali (pronounced Vaalee).

They have already shown that Lord Shiva curbed the pride of Ravan.
Vali defeated Ravan. A king named Sahasrarjun also defeated Ravan. May be they will show these.

Kartviryarjun defeated Ravan

Ravan was always looking for somebody who could be a match to him in strength. On finding any such person, Ravan challenged him to a duel.
There was a king named Kartviryarjun. He was also named Sasrarjun because he had thousand hands.(The word Sahasra means thousand). He got thousand hands as a boon from Lord Dattatreya(incarnation of Lord Vishnu). In brief he is also called as Arjun. But one must not confuse him with Arjun of Mahabharat.

Ravan heard of Kartviryarjun power and went to challenge him. Before challenging Kartviryarjun, Ravan saw river Narmada. He went to the bank of Narmada and started offering worship to Lord Shiva. He found that water started flowing in opposite direction. Ravan asked his men to find out the reason. They found that at some distance Kartviryarjun was taking bath in Narmada. Some women of his gynaecium were with him. He made water flow in opposite direction with his thousand hands.
Ravan got angry that his puja was interrupted because of Kartviryarjun and wanted to have war with him. Ravan's ministers advised him that Kartviryarjun was relaxing in the water of Narmada at that time and was also in the company of women, therefore it was not appropriate to challenge him at that time. But Ravan did not listen.
Initially there was war between Ravan's soldiers and Kartviryarjun's soldiers. When Kartviryarjun was still inside water, Ravan's soldiers had upper hand and they were destroying the soldiers of Kartviryarjun. Kartviryarjun came out without any worry and defeated the soldiers of Ravan. He challenged Ravan to have single combat. Ravan and Kartviryarjun fought. Kartviryarjun easily won. He took Ravan to his(Kartviryarjun's) jail and imprisoned him.

Ravan's grandfather Pulastya came to know of this. He reached Mahismati(Kartviryarjun's capital) and requested Kartviryarjun to release Ravan. Since Kartviryarjun defeated Ravan, therefore he had the right to take anything from Ravan. If he wanted, he could also take Ravan's kingdom. But, out of respect for the great sage Pulastya, Kartviryarjun did not ask for anything and released Ravan. Not only that, he even accepted Ravan as his friend.
Some stories say that sage Pulastya asked Kartviryarjun to free Ravan and some say that Lord Brahma did that. It is possible that both Lord Brahma and sage Pulastya went to Kartviryarjun.

His name was Vali....not Bali...so.....that's a blooper in Ramayan????

When you say Vali, you're talking about Sugriv's brother right???? The one Ram killed while hiding behind a tree??? Tara's husband??? Angad's father??? Or are you confusing the person I'm talking about with someone else???

Not that I'm doubting you, but, I asked my grandfather the name of Sugriv's brother....and he said Bali...not Vali.....and he has read Valmiki Ramayan........I even asked him if he's sure...and he said yes....

I'm really confused...My grandfather doesn't have a copy of Valmiki Ramayan anymore...because when he was coming to the US.....my grandmother told him its inauspicious to take the book abroad...so he left it in India...😡😡

So...If you have a copy of Valmiki Ramayan at home, please recheck his name, so that all misconceptions can be cleared...

Actually, if you have a scanner, can you scan the portion that mentions Vali....and attach it to this post...or pm it to me.........cuz i want to be certain about this........

Thanks...

I have Valmiki Ramayan.
Sugreev's brother was Vali. He is the one whom Lord Ram killed and he is the monkey king who defeated Ravan.
Bali was Prahlad's grandson, from whom Lord Vishnu in His Vaman avatar took everything and sent him to Sutal loka.

Now, let me say why people sometimes say Bali for Sugreev's brother when the actual name is Vali.
Sugreev's brother was Vali(pronounced Vaalee). There are some languages in which people often pronounce V as B. This is the case in various local dialects e.g. instead of saying vishwaas, they will say biswaas. This is not something new. Even in the time of Tulsidas, local dialects had such kind of pronunciation.
Therefore, Vaalee was pronounced as Baalee. Following that pronunciation, some people write Bali.

In Hindi, fearless is
Nirbhaya

because fear is "bhaya" and the prefix "nir" is used for negation.
