CHAPTER 12. DAADIMA! MEET YOUR BAHU! ERRR... MY STUDENT!
"Waise... Annie beta tum Geet ke liye...", Daadima was about to question when Dev cut her off, "Daadima! English please!"
Daadima huffed, "Haan! Haan! Pata hai! I will speak in English! So Annie beta! Why were you buying dresses for Geet?", Daadima questioned as she took a sip out of her tea. Once the explanation was done, her grandchildren managed to convince her to stay for dinner with Maan promising to drop her home and soon Geet had her enjoying tea and the company of her grandchildren.
"We had ordered some classy, elegant dresses and sarees for Geet few days back. The designer had gotten the measurements at that time and now I got the clothes back.", Annie answered. She pointed to her bag, "But this bag does not contain all of them. These are just samples!"
"Samples?", Geet looked at Annie in confusion and Annie explained, "The designer has designed a sample dress in specific style taking in your height, weight, figure and other things. She has to see whether the style suits you or not. It should enhance your beauty and emphasise your plus points you see. So this has sample salwar kameez and a Saree for her! If it suits you, she will design all your clothes based on the sample!"
"Arre waah!", Daadima exclaimed, "This is so good. Geet beta! Go! Try the salwar kameez right away and show us!"
"Kya?", Geet looked at Daadima in shock, "Nahi nahi Daadima!"
"Arre! What nahi nahi? Come on Geet! Be a sport!", Dev urged but Geet shyly looked down. Daadima smiled at the scene. Dev and Geet are so good friends! Yes! This Jodi will be very good!
"Come on Geet! Please!", Annie pleaded too but Geet continued to refuse, "Nahi! Mujhe Daadima ke saamne sharam aa rahi hai! I am feeling so shy!"
Daadima smiled curiously, "Arre beta! What is there to be shy about?"
Geet simply looked down.
Maan had enough of this yes-no, yes-no game, "Geet! Go and change! And that's an order!"
Annie and Dev rolled their eyes while Geet nodded softly. This was usual to them; Maan ordering Geet and being generally rude to her. But it was not usual for Daadima. How rude! Daadima thought as she looked at her grandson. I did not raise my grandson to be this rude! Hey Babaji! She turned to take in the other three's expressions and her quick mind put two and two together. The other three's reactions told her that this was something usual! Is this how Maan treats Geet on daily basis? She was shocked by this realization.
The moment Geet left to her room, Daadima signaled Annie to come closer. And when Annie sat by her, Daadima whispered, "Is Maan always this rude to Geet? I mean I know he is generally an anti-social person, but he was never this disrespectful to women!"
Annie shook her head, "Maan Bhai does not respect Geet, Daadima!"
Daadima frowned, "But why?"
Annie huffed, "Because she is just a waitress!"
Daadima shook her head, "That's it? Humne Maan bete ko aise nahi paala tha! (I did not raise Maan to be like this!)"
Annie shrugged, "Bhai has turned very arrogant Daadima! He sees Geet as beneath his status and that's why he refuses to respect her!"
Daadima frowned in anger, "This is wrong! Maan bete yeh theek nahi kar rahe hain! Kisi ko unke status ke nazariye se dekhna galat hai! (Maan is not doing right here! It is wrong to judge someone based on their status!) I hope you and Dev atleast treat her normally!"
Annie grinned at that, "Of course Daadima! We love her! Infact, Dev and Geet have become really good friends!"
Daadima smiled at that. Dev and Geet are good friends! Hey Babaji! She smiled dreamily as she started imagining Dev and Geet's marriage and junior Devs and Geets running around the house.
Few minutes passed and Daadima had yet to come out of her dreamland. Suddenly she heard a gasp from Annie and she turned to look at her but Annie's attention was focused on the stairs. Daadima frowned and turned to see what had made Annie gasp only to be shocked herself. There stood Geet in a beautiful orange and pink colored chudidaar with collared neck looking as regal as some princess. Her hair, usually pulled back and plaited, was left open and they fell down her shoulder in waves. Her eyes sparkled and while her cheeks were flushed with excitement. She is so pretty! Daadima mused but then Geet smiled and her whole face glowed and Daadima amended her earlier statement. No! Not just pretty! She is beautiful! "Bikul pari jaisi! (Just like fairy!)", Daadima whispered. "Yes Daadima!", Daadima heard Dev speak up and Daadima turned to see Dev grin at Geet and give her a thumbs up. Dev ko bhi Geet pari jaisi lagi? (Even Dev finds Geet fairy like?) Haaye!
Just at that moment Maan, who was reading the newspaper, frowned in confusion. Who is looking like fairy? Yeh Daadima kya bol rahi hai? He looked up and he felt his breath stop. He got up from his seat in a trance and simply stared at the vision in front of him. The newspaper slipped out of his hand and fell on the floor but he did not even notice it. All he could do was stare at her. Maan had seen Geet dressed in cocktail waitress uniform and in simple salwar kameez and while he knew she was pretty he had always pegged her beauty as average. But today dressed in an ethnic salwar kameez, she looked like a royal princess and Maan could not look away from her.
"Maan bete! What do you thin...", Daadima turned to talk to Maan but was shocked to see him standing. Her eyes widened as she took in his expression. She smiled mischievously. Arre waah! Maan bete pehli baar kisi ladki is tarah dekh rahe hain! (First time Maan is looking at a girl like this!) Kahin unhein Geet... With excitement she looked towards Geet.
By then Geet finally had got down the stairs and stood in front of them. Excited about her new get up her eyes kept flitting from one person to another and hence, she did not notice Maan's gaping expression.
"Arre! Koi toh kuch bolo! Someone please say something. How do I look?", Geet muttered nervously. By then Dev and Annie had stood up and now they made their way to Geet eagerly.
"You look perfect Geet! Simply perfect!", Annie chirped and hugged her.
"Wow! Geet! Fantastic transformation! Awesome makeover!", Dev exclaimed.
Geet grinned happily and shook Dev's hand.
That is when Daadima stepped forward and cupped her cheeks, "Haaye! Kitni pyaari lag rahi ho! How pretty!" Geet blushed while looking at Daadima shyly.
Finally Geet looked away from everybody and looked at Maan who simply stared at her and did not say a single word. Geet bit her lip in worry. Was she looking horrible? Was she looking bad? Hey Babaji!
"Maan Bete! Say something!", Daadima prompted and Maan came out of his thoughts.
"Uh... You... You are looking...", Maan cleared his throat while looking away.
Dev, Annie and Daadima looked with excitement at Maan. They were sure that Maan will praise Geet. After all, she did look very beautiful. Geet, on the other hand, was nervous. What if she was not looking good and Maan refused to train her anymore?
"You are looking alright!", Maan finally spat out in a gruff voice. Geet heaved a sigh of relief while other three deflated. That's it? Only alright? They were so not happy. Geet was happy though because she knew that getting a word out of Maan's mouth which did not sound disparaging was praise in itself.
But while Geet was happy, others weren't and while Daadima remained quiet, still stuck at the part where Maan was literally drooling while looking at Geet, Annie and Dev refused to remain quiet and rose to defend their new friend.
"Alright Bro? That's it? She is looking like an angel and you are saying simply alright?" Dev was aghast at his brother. Is he blind or what?
"Sachchi Bhai! This is ridiculous. If not beautiful, atleast say she looks good. What is this alright business?", Annie was very miffed at Maan and she let him know it.
"Its Ok!", Geet's voice broke in and Dev and Annie turned to look at her. Geet nodded at them while smiling tenderly, "Its ok! I don't have any problem!"
"But..." Annie tried to complain but Geet cut her off, "Annie! Its ok! Chod do! Leave it! I will go and change!"
Dev and Annie sighed in defeat, giving up on their quest to scold Maan.
After few minutes, Geet came back dressed in her usual salwar kameez and Annie stopped her, "Geet! Why did you change into this? You have to try the Saree too remember?"
Geet pouted, "Can we do it later? You all must be tired and hungry. Maybe tomorrow?"
Annie nodded, "Fine! But tomorrow, after everyone has left for work, you and I are going to check out that Saree!"
Geet agreed and both headed to the dining table.
Later, everyone sat around the table and enjoyed the food.
"Waah! Kya Parathe hain!", Dev exclaimed as he enthusiastically chomped down the Paratha.
"Haan! This is very delicious! And the Matar Paneer is simply out of world!", Daadima agreed.
Suddenly, Maan called out for the cook and once the cook came, Maan spoke, "Wow! Shyamlal! You have cooked really well today!"
The cook frowned and Daadima piped in, "Haan haan! Paratha and Matar Paneer are really good! And the Biryani... Lajawab! I am very impressed!"
The Cook opened his mouth to say something when Dev jumped in, "Haan Shyamlal! You have cooked so well, if you were a girl, I would have kissed you!"
Geet's eyes widened while Annie could not resist herself, "But Shyamlal did not cook today!"
"Kya?", Maan, Dev and Daadima said at once.
"Toh kaun? Who cooked this?", Daadima questioned.
Annie grinned eagerly, "It was Geet!"
"Arre waah!"
"Sachchi?"
Daadima and Dev spoke while Maan remained silent.
Annie nodded and then snickered, "Dev Bhai! You said you will kiss the cook, now why don't you kiss Geet?"
Annie burst out laughing as Geet turned red while Dev ducked his head shyly. Daadima looked at Dev in amusement wondering what he will do next. No one noticed Maan's hand tightening on his spoon or his eyes glaring at his plate.
Annie continued to laugh when she suddenly stopped in shock as Dev got up from his seat and moved towards Geet, his jaw tight with determination. Maan looked up while Geet's eyes widened. Daadima blinked in shock while Annie's jaw dropped open. Dev walked towards Geet and bend down on his knees in front of her. Geet gulped. Dev lifted her hand and placed a kiss on the back of it surprising everyone. Then he got up and smiled at his family impishly, "I said I will kiss her, but did not specify where!"
Daadima and Annie broke out laughing while Geet smiled bashfully. Dev got back to his seat and grinned at everyone. Again, no one noticed Maan letting out a sigh of relief.
Daadima looked from Dev to Maan and back to Dev in worry. She had the biggest question in front of her. Who was Geet better with? Who was the better life partner for her? Maan or Dev? If she was planning to match make, she had to choose her bakra...err... her grandson. And she had to decide soon. Because Geet was one of the kind! Daadima was sure that sooner or later, someone would see her qualities and marry her. The girl was beautiful, polite and best of all, cooked. The girls of these days very rarely cooked. No! This girl was a gem and she had to snag Geet for her family before someone else takes her away. But who is right for her? Maan who is rude with her but is also attracted to her or Dev who is just friendly with her and not attracted but treats her like a girl and not someone beneath his status? Daadima was confused and continued to try finding the answer.
Maan looked down in annoyance. He did not know why but the moment Annie mentioned Dev kissing Geet, he felt hatred blaze through his mind for his brother. Why? He did not understand. And even though Dev did not kiss on lips but on hand, Maan continued to fume in anger. But he could not understand why.
"Chalo Beta! I am leaving! I am already so late! Maan beta! Drop me home please!" Daadima muttered later as they sat on the sofa in the living room.
"Nahi Daadima! Don't go na! Why don't you stay here tonight?", Annie asked in pleading tone.
"But beta...", Daadima spoke but Dev cut her off, "Please Daadima ruk jaayiye na!"
Daadima was not sure and that's when Maan spoke, "Daadima! Please stay! You can go back tomorrow morning!"
Daadima smiled and nodded. When her favorite grandson told her to stay who was she to say no?
Geet cheered and soon Daadima, Annie and Geet retired to their rooms.
Maan left for his study and stayed there going through his files but for once his mind was not in his work. He was thinking about how Dev had kissed Geet's hand. How dare he! He went and kissed her hand! Is that how you are supposed to behave with a girl? So uncouth! Girls are supposed to be treated with respect. Not in such disrespectful manner! Maan conveniently forgot how horrible he himself treated Geet. He continued to fume in his mind when Dev entered the room. Poor Dev!
"Bro! Did you see my tender file here? I was working on it and need to put it into my bag for tomorrow...", Dev was cut off.
"How dare you! How dare you interrupt me! Can't you see I am working here? I am busy Dev! You are being so immature these days! And no manner at all! I am not happy with you...", Maan continued to shout.
Dev took one look at his angry brother, turned tail and ran away. He was not foolish to take on Maan Singh Khurana, especially when he was in angry avatar. No thank you! He loved his life too much to take such risk! Once he reached his room, he frowned in confusion. But why was Bro angry at me? What did I do? Dev scratched his head but he did not get his answer.
"Achcha Maan! What are your plans for Geet next?", Daadima asked next morning on the breakfast table. She was planning to leave for her house after having breakfast with her grandchildren.
Maan frowned, "Nothing much. In few months, there is the Annual Gala coming up. I will introduce her there and that will decide the outcome of our bet. Till then training Geet is my priority."
"What do you think about giving Geet a trial run? You know test drive?", Daadima asked.
Dev, Annie and Geet looked at Daadima curiously and Maan replied, "Get to the point Daadima. What do you want?"
Daadima huffed, "Why do you think I want something?"
Maan rolled his eyes, "Because I know you!"
Daadima pouted, "Theek hai! I will get to the point. No need to be so snarky about it.", Daadima grumbled and continued, "In two weeks, there is a party. It is thrown by my friend Vidisha..."
"I knew it!", Maan shouted loudly making everyone around him jump, "I knew it! You want me to come to the party and meet a girl right? Who is it? Your friend's daughter? Or her niece? Whoever she is I don't care! I don't want to..."
"That would be enough!", Daadima roared cutting Maan off, "The world does not revolve around you! Not everything is about you!"
Maan huffed and folded his arms against his chest while Annie and Dev snickered amongst themselves. Geet looked at the grandson and the grandmother with wide eyes not used to seeing calm and polite Daadima shout or Maan being browbeaten by someone.
"Exactly Bhai! The world does not revolve around you! Maybe Daadima wants a bride for Dev. Have you ever thought about that?", Annie asked Maan.
Maan blinked, looking surprised and Annie's jaw dropped open, "You seriously did not consider that Daadima would want to find a bride for Dev Bhai? What do you think? He wants to be a lifelong bachelor like you?"
Dev opened his mouth to say something, when Maan piped in, "Of course! Dev is smart. He is not foolish enough to go and marry a dumb rich heiress and be tangled in the matrimonial shackles!"
Geet looked at Maan in horror. Matrimonial shackles? Marriage is such a beautiful thing and he calls them shackles? Hey Babaji!
While Geet remained silent, the rest continued to argue.
"Matrimonial shackles? I don't think Dev Bhai thinks like that! I think Dev Bhai wants to get married one day. Haina Bhai?", Annie questioned as she looked at Dev. Dev looked at Annie and Maan both, confused as with whom he should agree. If he agreed with Maan, Annie would be disappointed with him, and if he went with his thinking he will agree with Annie and offend Maan. Hey Geet ke Babaji! Now what am I supposed to say?
Luckily for Dev, Daadima interrupted the Khurana siblings' conversation just then, "Enough! Enough of this discussion! I am talking about something else here!" Maan and Annie both opened their mouths to argue and Daadima glared at them making both of them shut up right away.
"I know what you think about marriage Maan, and I do know your views too Annie! Infact, I even know what are Dev's thoughts regarding marriage. But for once, I am not interested in this argument or whether my grandsons marry or not! My topic is entirely off the tangent here!", Daadima spoke and Maan raised an eyebrow. Daadima and not interested about finding a bahu? This is something serious. It seemed that Annie and Dev realised the same thing as both looked at Daadima attentively. Geet simply blinked.
"As I was saying", Daadima said trying to bring the conversation back on track, "My friend Vidisha is throwing a party. I am thinking that this might be a good trial run for Geet. Why not take Geet there and see if she can act like us? That way we will get to know where she stands in her training! "
Maan frowned, "But she is not ready Daadima!"
Annie piped in, "Arre! But how do you know she is ready or not unless you test her! Lets test her Bhai! We will know what she is good at and where she needs more training!"
Maan looked at everyone gathered around him. Daadima looking at him expectantly, Annie looking eager, Dev looking excited and Geet looking nervous and yet not against the idea and Maan finally nodded. Dev and Annie cheered loudly while Geet and Daadima grinned at each other excitedly.
"Then its final!", Daadima announced, "In two weeks, Geet is coming to the Vidisha's party!"
AUTHOR NOTE:
I don't know how rich people order clothes and all; the sample thing is just my assumption when you have to order a whole new designer wardrobe.
And the sample dress worn by Geet in the update is the one in the banner! I just described that dress!
PRECAP:
Training continues!
Thank you, take care and have fun,
