Exclusive: I think half my popularity is because of that goof up on Karan's show : Alia Bhatt

Alia Bhatt is on the cover of a Miss Vogue; a smaller, cuter editionof the style bible. Like the new publication, Alia embodies the young, vivacious & digital savvy 21st century Indian girl. Juggling a public launch in Mumbai with her ongoing Udta Punjab' schedule, the IT girl of Bollywood zips through a chat on her connect with young fans, the stale dumb' jokes & why she won't say nothing on Sidharth Malhotra!
Tell me about being on the cover of Miss Vogue; are you helping the publication Indianize itself, so to speak?
I think Vogue has Indianized itself pretty well. What's different about this is that it's a younger Vogue that speaks to a younger audience. With social media and technology available easily, people are so aware & hungry to know the latest in style, fashion & trends.Sometimes, I have these young girls come up to me and say that we Love what you wore here', or that we loved Student of The Year because you wore this', and you have people emulating certain trends. Miss Vogue' is just all things that are cool, fun, young & fresh.
Is this similar to Teen Vogue' then?
No Teen Vogue' is different as that speaks mostly to teenagers. This magazine speaks to everyone and its small and cute. It can fit into your purse. It can be your little best friend.
During the launch in the mall, I overheard some young girls, teenagers, who are besotted by you. You have a pretty big fan following with teenagers & young kids. Do you remember a special compliment that you've received from your under 18 fans?
I don't like picking one compliment over the other. I think for me when anybody writes me a letter, or sends me notes, or even says one kind word, I feel that is really genuine. It's not about what they say but the place that it comes from. I want to save all those letters & put them up in my new house on a wall. I feel a little awkward and a little confused. I keep thinking that I hope I am looking good & am living up to all their expectations. But it's really sweet when they are cheering for you. Ummm... I think these things, you kind of get scared also because you think you will miss it when they are not there anymore. People aren't looking at me anymore.
Does that really ever happen to movie stars?
Of course that happens at some point of time in life! I am not really thinking forward or anything. You get a sense of responsibility and at the same time, feel a sense of joy for sure.
Have you found your new apartment? When do you plan to move in?
I've found one and I am in the process of doing it up. I have no immediate plans of moving in there. It's close to my family home in Juhu.
So could you tell us about Shandaar & Udta Punjab?
I wrapped up Shandaar' quite some time ago. Currently, I am shooting for Udta Punjab'. I just came back for the launch. It's too soon to speak about it; we have shot all over Punjab. I am shooting in Amritsar. I don't want to give away too much of the story but definitely I would say that it is one of the toughest characters that I have played till date.
After completing Udta Punjab', you will be shooting for this film with Sushant Singh Rajput right? The one that Homi Adajania & Dinesh Vijan are co directing?
(Pauses) I wouldn't comment on that right now (smiles).
In the recent awards season, you've been judged a style icon a few times. Do you now feel the pressure to look good & stylish all the time?
Definitely there is pressure. I feel people don't realize how much time and effort goes into getting dressed up and ready. But I think the pressure is for everybody right now. Everybody is into this whole thing of fitness & wanting to look good and tone up; and just lead a healthy life. I think for an actor, or any girl, you are vain and definitely want to look good. But when people are constantly looking at you, it does become a little more hectic.
Personally, I have just decided to let it be and live and let live. If I don't look good on any one day, it's okay. If I am having a bad hair day or make up on, its fine. Sometimes it does get said, that Oh what's happened, look at her face!'. I can live with that for I am really comfortable with the way I look.
You've always handled the comments that suggest you are dumb' very well. However, at a recent media event, if I recall correctly, you did shoot a GK question back... Is it getting a bit much now?
What happened was somebody asked me who is the president of India; I answered back asking, Do you know the president of South Africa?' and Do you know the president of Singapore?'. And I came up with names of different countries and questions like that. Because it's become a get on with it' kind of thing now. I don't get bothered; I will laugh about it. I think half my popularity is because of that goof up on Karan's show. I have no problems with that. But I have my own way to play with it now. It's not getting too much or not that I am getting bothered by these questions. It's just like now find something new!
Final question- what's happening between you & Sidharth? You've got to tell me!
I don't have to tell you! The whole world can keep guessing. I've said this before too. I am NOT going to talk about my personal life. It has nothing to do with what I am doing. That's something I want to keep to myself. When I am ready to talk about it, I will. So I am not going to deny ; I am not going to accept; I am just going to say I don't want to tell you.
