I feel bad for Raman. He's with the girl of his dreams, and yet he doesn't realize that she's not the one for him.

But at least he's going to meet Ishita now.. I'm curious. Will there be instant sparks, or will it be subtle and gradual? Just asking. Either way is fine with me😃

Oh, and Simmi is with Param?😕

Chapter 3

The engagement ceremony happened without further incident that night. Toshiji had done a simple puja to give blessings to the couple. Shagun and Mrs. Arora were impressed with the size of the ring Raman had bought. Mihir had looked on apologetically as Shagun slipped on a flashy men's engagement ring onto Raman's finger that he recoiled at. He smiled nevertheless and thanked them. He saw happiness in his mother's eyes which meant a lot to him. He knew she was happy to see him finally taking this step in his life even if it meant it would take him further from their family.

It was a reality his whole family felt, without voicing it, as they all knew what Shagun was like. Raman could no longer look into his father's eyes these days; there was a question in them that he felt unable to answer. Even without really knowing what it was. Romi, Simmi and Rinki were being themselves, joking around and ragging on each other. Raman remembered a time when he would be in the middle of all that, joking the loudest, causing the most trouble. The Bhalla kids were a force to be reckoned with when in masti. But he had for some reason made himself an outsider. Especially when Shagun was around, he felt the need to act more dignified. He still held out hope that with time, Shagun would make a place in all their hearts and everything would be again like it was in his family.

His brother-in-law Param had walked over and was congratulating him as the rest of the family discussed the next event. "Congratulations Raman bhai. You are a lucky man. Shagun is very beautiful."

"Thanks Paramji. Glad you could make it. How has it been settling back into Delhi?"

"It's not bad, finding a job has been challenging but I'm sure something will work out soon. I'm just happy to be with Simmi again."

"Yes its good you are back, Simmi is very happy. If you want any help getting some contacts, I can certainly give you some names."

"I will certainly let you know, thank you." With a smirk he ambled back over to where Simmi was, taking a long look at Shagun as she admired her ring.

"Very nice Shagun bhabhi" he chirped to her as he walked by. Shagun gave him a flattered smile, ever happy to receive compliments.

Raman had never warmed much to his brother-in-law who seemed to have a very careless attitude towards everything. But his family were old friends of Papaji's from his army days and that's how the rishta had come for Simmi 3 years ago. After two years of marriage, he had gone abroad to the middle for an entrepreneurial opportunity only to return after its failure.

"Okay Bhai, toh ab hum chaltein hain. We'll drop off Shagun to her apartment on the way. Don't worry." Mihir had grabbed his mother and called to his sister.

"Raman, tomorrow you have to take me to get this sized. I should be done with my shoot around 7, you can pick me up there after work."

He nodded in response. After the Aroras left and everything was put away, Raman retired to his bedroom and his own thoughts. He walked over to the vanity table to put his watch down. It was mostly empty outside of a comb and a bottle of lotion. The vanity was an elegantly carved antique that his mother had picked out more than five years ago when his old one broke. When he complained about the girlishness of the look, his mother had retorted that he barely used his anyway and that this would appeal to his wife when he got married. He wondered if he should suggest to Shagun to take it to their new place but he doubted that this was her style. In a few short months, he would have to move out this room and the house for good, away from his family. As he lay down on his bed, he felt an intense wave of sadness at the impending loss but tried to shut it out of his mind and give into sleep.

"Raman, I told you I have a shoot tonight. And you were supposed to take me for the ring resizing!"
"I know Shagun, but that can be done any time. I think we need to get the wedding planner on board so she can get started right away. We can set up a time after your shoot tonight."
"I thought your mother was doing all the planning?"
"She is getting too stressed out Shagun. Simmi is busy now with Param back and Rinki is just a kid. I was hoping you would be able to help her..."
"Please don't start that. You know how busy I've been completing my modeling commitments."
"Okay okay, lets not have this argument again. I'll ask Mummyji to go."
"Just make sure everything that is selected is in good taste. You are a top CEO now and our wedding must reflect that. Don't skimp like you usually do."

He hung up a few minutes later in annoyance. Everything was so difficult with her these days. He would ask his mother to go. At least with the planner she will only have to make decisions and not all the work like she was now. He picked up the phone again.

"Hello this is Raman Kumar Bhalla, can I speak with Ms. Ishita Iyer please?"

"Hi Mr. Bhalla, this is Ishita. It's nice to speak with you, I got your email." Her voice was melodious and kind and she spoke flawless hindi which surprised him.

"So have you done any Punjabi weddings or only Tamil ones?" At first, seeing the last name he wasn't sure but she assured him.

"I grew up in Delhi and so naturally most of the weddings we do are Punjabi. But if you are marrying a Tamilian we also do excellent Tamilian weddings brimming with insider knowledge. You'll have to deal with my mother mostly though." Her carefree laugh chinked across the phone line and Raman felt himself smile subconsciously.

"So when can you and your fiance meet me?"

"Actually my mother is going to be the one you'll be working with. I just wanted to call to set up the first appointment. My fiance and I are a bit tied up at work and that's why we haven't been able to help Mummy in the planning as we should. So when Mr. Tandon suggested you I thought it was a good idea."

"Oh ok. No problem. If you decide to go with us, we'll take care of everything. Mummiji won't have to take any stress. However I do need the two of you at the second meeting at the very least. Once I discuss with your mom today, I'll put together some ideas and will need you to make some decisions at that point. Everything else based on your schedules, we can figure out. Does that work?"

Raman felt a sense of relief after hanging up. She sounded like a capable and sensible person. He sent a quick note to Tandon and his wife thanking them for the reference.

Raman was eating dinner when his mother returned back home that evening after meeting with Ishita.

"Puttar, you did a very good thing hiring a wedding planner. That girl is wonderful. She explained everything so simply and collected information about our budget, guest lists and expectations."
"Good Ma, I was hoping so. How were her designs and ideas?"
"Very good beta. Simple, elegant, completely your style."
"Mine? Ma, Shagun's tastes are important not mine."

"Haan haan puttar, I explained that to her too. She said they see that a lot and she will keep the two styles in mind as she comes up with ideas for you. By the way the next meeting is set for this Saturday. All three of us should go. She said most of the decisions will be made then. Make sure Shagun is there puttar, otherwise we'll get yelled at for making cheap choices."

Raman scowled at his mother for the snipe. Not because he was offended on Shagun's behalf but because he knew how true it was. This was good news though, his mother liked this Ishita Iyer and he liked the sound of her. Raman was looking forward to Saturday. He wanted to put a face to the voice and to hear again that lilting laugh that had echoed in his memory since they spoke.
