Chapter 1
"Okay so Mihir will get this scanned and distributed by the end of the week. We'll begin scouting locations and if all goes well, project can start by end of the month."
"Sounds great, thanks Raman. I'm leaving everything in your very capable hands. Pass along my thanks to Mihir as well, he's worked a great deal to make this happen. I may not see him before I have to take off."
"Thank you Mr. Tandon! We are so happy to be managing this for you."
Raman put away the files and got up to walk Tandon out. This deal was a huge get for Gemini Consulting. Tandon was a London businessman trying to bring the brand he built back to Delhi. Mihir had landed the meeting for them and Raman had managed to seal the deal. In the process they had become friends, their families even getting together once or twice during Tandon's many visits over the last few months.
"By the way, how are your wedding preparations coming along Raman? Only 3 months to go right?"
"Don't ask, it's a nightmare right now. My mummiji talks about nothing else these days. Simmi has been busy with Param returning recently and Romi is completely useless so it's all fallen on her."
Tandon laughed thinking of the Bhalla matriarch. She was a character for sure. "Why don't you employ a wedding planner, take some of the stress off? In fact my wife's old friend from college is one right here in Delhi. You know what, let me have her send you the details later. She can arrange a meeting if you're interested."
"Yeah sure, that would be great. We haven't thought of getting a wedding planner as I thought Shagun would be able to manage but she has been tied up in the shopping alone plus wrapping up her final modeling contracts."
"I have yet to meet your fiance. Looks like that will have to wait till the wedding day at this rate. She must be someone very special and kind to get someone like you and your family."
Tandon departed and Raman returned to his desk and his thoughts, his client's last words most prominent among them. Shagun's image floated into his mind's eye, gorgeous, fit, fashionable she was an enviable fianc for any man and would fit right into in his business circles where the wives spent their time socializing and helping their husbands network. Straightforward, honest and hardworking though he was all his life, over the last few years he had felt himself morph into the sophisticated, distant, ruthless businessman people saw him as now.
Most of Raman's 20s were spent slaving away trying to build his own business while getting some experience in the corporate world. Running their own company was his and Mihir's dream from when they were kids. Though a couple years younger than him Mihir was his best friend, they had grown up together, their families neighbors back in the old colony. But even after the Bhallas moved away, they had never lost their friendship and brotherhood. In fact, their families used to make fun of them that they must have been twins in another life which led them to naming their company Gemini Consulting. Shagun was Mihir's sister. Raman had loved her all his life. Or at least he thought it was love...as a teenager it may have just been lust. She was the most beautiful girl he knew, all the boys in the colony were completely fida on her. Of course Shagun being Shagun, didn't give any of them the time of day. Certainly not Raman, who was her brother's dorky friend. She was usually lost in her own world...boy crazy over some older kid in her school, celebrities or anyone with a flashy bike. After college, Raman had made repeated efforts to ask her out but Shagun always laughed it off as though it was a prank.
It wasn't until her 28th birthday that on a drunken dare, she had kissed him at Gemini Consulting Group's official launch party. In the weeks after, they had fallen into an uncertain relationship. Raman was out of his mind happy at the turn of events. Shagun's modeling career had taken off a couple of years ago and while she had been in and out of relationships in her 20s, nothing ever stuck. Raman knew that deep down this was because she was meant for him.
Locking up after himself, he headed out of the office. He had to pick up Shagun and head home for the official engagement ceremony at his house. It was going to be a small affair, just the two families and some close friends.
His thoughts returned to his relationship. Things weren't perfect between him and Shagun. They had a lot of differences between them and their lifestyles and hobbies were poles apart but Raman learned to compromise. After all, that's what is needed in a relationship. One partner has to be more understanding to make it work and now they were getting married. Not that this was an easy road either. One year into their relationship, he had proposed. Several times. But Shagun turned him down saying that it was too soon and that she wanted their careers to settle down first. Two years in, he asked again but she said she wasn't ready.
In the meantime he had gotten busy again at work as GCG had a massive stroke of luck in landing a client that was greatly in the news at that time. After that the contracts kept flowing in and within a span of a year, the company grew from a team of 10 people to where it was now, a thriving business of 150 employees. The level of stress in his life increased, the pressure increased. His days were spent either fulfilling long hours at work or attending society parties at Shagun's insistence that this would benefit his business and that they had to capitalize on his sudden popularity in the business world.
Then a few months ago Shagun had finally become ready to get married. Things had been on a speed train since and he felt he hadn't really had a chance to digest and evaluate his life properly. But on the surface, he had gotten everything he ever wanted. A business of his own that he ran with his best friend, as much money as his family could ever want and he was marrying the girl he had dreamed off his entire life.
Yet, there was an underlying sadness in him that he couldn't pinpoint. He felt empty, exhausted, lifeless. He brushed the thought aside as he neared Shagun's apartment. It must just be the stress of the wedding. And before that it must have been the workload. He sighed internally as he texted Shagun that he was waiting downstairs.
Maybe he should hire a wedding planner. Yes that would solve his problem.
