Can male and female bodies be treated same way?

Made this topic after reading conversation on another thread and after the hype around recent controversial #FreeTheNipple campaign.

Can bodies of males and females be treated the same?

Why can't women roam topless but men can? (Though in many places, and families, men are also not allowed to be anything less than fully clothed)

Why's an ad for men's innerwear okay but ads for women's innerwear are either not shown or are deemed vulgar/inappropriate?

It's still a big deal about women's cleavage, or whether they were covered properly with dupatta and pallu or not. Women are discouraged from scratching openly, cautioned if bra strap is showing. Breast feeding should also be done in private or being "covered".

Debates about women's clothing go on endlessly. Sometimes women are even called out if their breasts "move too much" when they laugh!

Somehow there's always a certain sense of "shame" and embarrassment associated with female's body.

Even females themselves comment on what other female was wearing or where her clothes were "going" (be it dupatta or jeans).

Women's bodies are also scrutinised more, weight, skin colour, size and shape of body parts etc. That level of nitpicking and scrutiny is never there for male bodies.

There are rules on how women should or shouldn't sit, lie down, run, jump, play, stand etc. (Probably it has to do with their bodies)

Can this be changed?

Is it ever possible to treat female body absolutely normally without association of shame, vulgarity, embarrassment, titillation, propriety?

Visit some native tribes across the world. You will come across both men and women roaming topless. No one in the tribe are licking their lips lustily at her breasts. None of them are staring at it creepily or making a big deal out of it. Her breasts are not a big deal. It is definitely not sexual or dirty. Breasts are natural, what she was born with. They are sexual, titillating, provoking - only when you believe that.

So there are two ways people go about it
- Tribes are savages. They are not civilized. They do not know better. They haven't learned shame and humility.
- Something is wrong with our civilization. Why is something so natural and normal, made to be so sexual?

If we want to change notions we need people to reject option 1 and embrace option 2.

I was looking up something about the free the nipple campaign as I had no idea what it was. But Return To Hades is right, there are tribes out there which don't have any issue with female breasts at all. It is a case of rules and restrictions being placed on people over time concerning what is right and what is the wrong way to behave. I am not a supporter of the campaign though.
Men and women and their bodies will not be treated the same for a long time! But I disagree that only women are called out on their bodies, men also have to wrestle with body image issues and looking 'manly' enough though that is disproportionate to women.

The psychology of the woman is corrupted by man telling her things which are not true...Women have been taught never to be in any way like the male...and main difference is thousands of years of conditioning and different rules against women...still people feel She is just a reproductive mechanism. But
Men and women are different... not only different, but opposites. But they are not unequal, they are equal... There is difference, there is oppositeness...Two opposites are always equal, otherwise they cannot oppose each other...female body exists for a totally different purpose - biologically, physiologically, chemically. It has a different function to fulfill than the male body...The woman carries a womb...whole moving phenomenon of life passes through it... it has to receive, it has to be an opening, it has to invite the unknown...the whole psychology of woman differs...woman is more centered than a man...

That's deep. But yes, women are more centered then men and that's why they can be so solipsistic.

I guess basically the whole creation and everything in the universe is generally unequal and we just have to accept it and deal with it.
A man and a woman are more equal than a man and a dog or any other animal.
We can try to bring down certain barriers but differences will always exist.

Another that men don't really need to apply makeup but women have this feeling that they look so charming if they apply makeup..and hence prefer wearing makeup on special events.
A woman doesn't show elegance if she doesn't fully cross or stick her legs together while sitting on a chair. She also usually has to remain conscious while bending, avoid bending...such rules don't apply on men.

This is based on the first post by 'Atominis'.

My question is why are the questions you have put up in the post important? I am definitely a male person. But this is how I take.

Why do I have to look into what the society tells me to do? The society can put up any number of restrictions . The society may ridicule me in any number of ways. But then that is the way society is.

God has created every human being to be special. Myself and yourself have special talents. Even as I practice being more caring, compassionate, gentle, tender, understanding and loving, I find I am definitely special. As a fact many persons ridicule me because, I am an introvert. But I am now least bothered about what people tell about me.

For a person who is interested in making some mark, these questions won't become important. There have been women I know who have made mark as engineers in site, as drillers in oil rig ship, in police force etc. Did they ask these questions? One thing I understand is if I believe I am a victim, I am going to go nowhere.

If a husband and wife present themselves to a judge for a divorce case, the question the judge asks the man is 'Will you take her back?' and the question the judge asks the wife is, 'Will you live with him?'. Why doesn't the judge ask the man, 'Will you live with her?' like he asks the woman 'Will you live with him?'
