Chapter 5

Things are getting weird, thought Sanyukta as she walked towards the canteen, to grab a bite before classes started again...within a span of few days she seemed to have made the two brothers her friends...a thing which would have been an impossible thought even a week back...it did not seem that either Randhir or Rehan had ever spared a single thought about her in these past years, or had they? Pondered Sanyukta, as she sat down at the table...what confused her more was her thoughts and feelings about these two brothers...while she knew it would hardly matter the two brothers about what she felt for them, but she could not possibly ignore her own thoughts...while her dislike towards Randhir seemed to be fading away rapidly...her attraction towards Rehan seemed to have intensified...it had almost been a week of her being friends with Randhir...while she was apprehensive at first as to how this newly found friendship would go...she was surprised to see that Randhir was actually following his promise of turning into a new leaf...he has not once insulted her in these past few days, have not tried to show her down...infact on the contrary he helped her in projects and assignments...he even made sure that he partnered her in all lab works and even in classes...Randhir's new behaviour had irked Kaustuki actually, for Randhir had actually asked her to sit somewhere else as he settled beside Sanyukta smugly...not only Kaustuki , this brand new Randhir had got everyone surprised or rather shocked...Sanyukta could swear that even his friends Parth and Jiggy were shocked to see his this change...sometimes she could not believe that this was the same Randhir with whom she used to fight at the drop of the hat...the competition was still there, but the enmity was gone...

On the other hand she could feel that she has become smitten by Rehan...she could not help but blush whenever Rehan seemed to be around , whenever he threw that charming smile at her or looked at her through those intimidating eyes...the first day of her tuition class with Rehan had went off well...she had reached the library on time and had found Rehan waiting for her already...as he patiently explained her all the doubts and cleared her confusion, she could not help but steal glances at him furtively, admiring his perfect features...he had caught her once glancing at him, and had given her that heart stopping smile again...her breath got stuck in her throat and Rehan had to speak loudly to bring her back from her trance...Sanyukta smiled remembering the incident ...

She took a bite of her sandwich thoughtfully...a deep voice invaded her thoughts and jerked her out of the happy memory...she saw Randhir was standing infront of her with a tray of food and frowning at her...she nodded at him questioningly... Randhir repeated what he had just now said and that seemed to have gone completely off Sanyukta's head as she stared blankly at him, " hello...may I sit here?" he asked feeling exasperated ... "y..yeah...sure." Sanyukta answered back feeling a bit stupid to have drifted into day dreaming about Rehan...

"When did you need permission to sit anywhere by the way.." Sanyukta said a bit mockingly, gaining back her composure...

"Was just trying to be civil...i am a man of my words...no rudeness from my side any more.." Randhir replied in a superior voice...

"Huh...really?? ..." scoffed Sanyukta... " That's nice..."

"Why ? you don't believe me?" Randhir said huskily...he pulled his chair closer towards Sanyukta , so that when he kept his hands on the table it almost brushed against Sanyukta's , he turned to face her ,bringing his face dangerously close towards her...Sanyukta felt her heart beat increasing a few pace...she gulped , but being the obstinate girl that she is, she also looked straight into Randhir's eyes...there was something in the way he looked at her that unsettled her... "W..what ...do you think you are doing?" she asked her voice shaking a bit...Randhir brought his hand close towards her face...involuntarily Sanyukta moved her head away a little...Randhir smirked watching her reaction and then very carefully with his thumb he wiped away a few of the bread crumbs from the corner of her mouth, his fingers trailing over her lips..."Just teaching you to be a little bit less messy..." he said softly...

"Mind moving a bit...i know we are friends now...but I still prefer my personal space...so ..umm...scoot..." Sanyukta said feeling flustered after what just happened, she still could not believe that Randhir had the audacity to touch her lips like that...and the most disturbing fact was, she felt a rumbling sensation inside her stomach, that made her wonder whether she was going to fall sick , or may be she is going crazy in her head, which is making her sick..."and you don't need to teach me anything..." she said haughtily trying to cover up her otherwise wayward thoughts...

Randhir, pushed his chair a little bit backwards, and suddenly said sounding all serious..." So how is it going with my brother?"

Sanyukta gasped; taken aback by his sudden query...she looked at him trying to analyze what was going on in his head... " Nothing that should be of your interest..." she replied calmly , picking up her glass of orange juice and sipping it slowly...

"He is my brother and you are my supposed friend...so I have all the interest in the world to know whats happening between these two people who are close to me..." Randhir replied back

"Close to you? Me? " Sanyukta said, raising her eyebrows..." we have been friends for like 3-4 days now..and seriously we don't even know each other well enough to be close..."

"Oh we have all the time, dear...we will get to know each other...and I am really eager to do so..." Randhir said, his eyes glinting...he took her hand suddenly and kissed it...

Sanyukta pulled away her hand instantly...and said angrily " you need to stop doing this..."

"Doing what?" teased Randhir...

"Touching me...kissing me...encroaching my personal space..." Sanyukta said flaring up

"I have not yet kissed you sweet heart...so don't accuse me of that...that was just a mere kiss on your hand...you have no idea what actually a kiss would be like " Randhir said ...his tone made Sanyukta again feel those rumblings in her stomach...

"Now coming to the point, tell me whats up between you and Rehan...i saw you two in library the other day looking busy..."

"Well, if that matters to you so much...Rehan is helping me with my studies ..." Sanyukta replied in a huff...

"Oh offcourse...how could I forget, someone as dumb as you, will obviously require help from seniors to pass in the subjects...no wonder you never top..." Mocked Randhir...

"Ummm...may be I have not beaten you to the top yet...but I am not far either...so you have no right to call me dumb...also who knows I might have some other ulterior motive to accept help from Rehan" Sanyukta said sarcastically..

"Ulterior motive? What do you mean?" asked Randhir sounding surprised...

"yeah...you know getting to know him better...spending some quality time with him...making friends..." Sanyukta trailed off..

"Please explain..." Randhir said impatiently, he certainly had no time for Sanyukta's flowery descriptions of "ulterior motive"...he just wanted to know how was Rehan going about his challenge...he needed to know it...so that he could counter that...it was by chance that he had seen Sanyukta and Rehan together in the library...and at that moment he understood that Rehan is already a step ahead in his mission...

"Randhir...what's up with you?...why the hell are you so much interested in knowing whats going on between me and Rehan...?" replied back Sanyukta feeling irritated...she did consider Randhir a friend now, surely not an enemy, but that does not mean that she has given him permission to pry in her personal life...that position he has not yet earned in her life...and she would not tolerate his inquisitiveness... "stop being so inquisitive...and you know what...may be we are not enemies anymore...but I do think you need to understand that we are not best of friends either...so sharing my personal life...my equations with various people with you is unquestionable..." She continued ..losing her temper completely... " and oh!...may be you should spend some of your precious time, with that girlfriend of yours, who is by the way , standing right behind you and frowning at us..while you are busy falling all over me and poking your nose in my private life..." Sanyukta added...saying that , she pushed her chair, took her bag and walked off, leaving a fuming Randhir...

Randhir ran his hands through his hair feeling frustrated, as he saw Sanyukta walking away...it was like he has gone 10 steps backwards in his attempt of moving a step towards her...he turned around and saw Shanaya looking at him with narrowed eyes... "Damn"! He cursed himself in his mind...now he will have to spend his "precious time" as pointed out by Sanyukta giving explanations to Shanaya, leaving behind his most important task, that of clearing the mess he has created by riling Sanyukta up...
